- GomBurZa is a historical film that will move and inspire today's Filipinos. It tells the story of three martyr priests - Mariano Gomez (Dante Rivero), Jose Burgos (Cedrick Juan), and Jacinto Zamora (Enchong Dee) - who were executed by Spain in 1872 falsely accused of sedition and treason. The film chronicles the struggle that began with the secularization movement led by Padre Pedro Pelaez (Piolo Pascual). From this movement, the advocacy for Filipinization of the Church, was continued and championed by Burgos, after Padre Pelaez unfortunately died in the Manila earthquake of 1863. Padre Burgos, along with Padre Gomez had inspired university students, the educated middle class and liberal intellectuals who began advocating for reforms in a colonial Philippines ruled by a conservative and oppressive government.
Hope was kindled when liberal Governor-General Carlos Maria dela Torre took office and encouraged these calls for reform and befriended Jose Burgos. Emboldened by what they thought was the dawn of a new age in the archipelago, the students and the educated class organized groups that gave birth to a nationalist consciousness. The first ilustrados were born and they called themselves Filipinos with pride and dignity. But De la Torre was replaced by the iron-fisted Governor-General Rafael Izquierdo, who immediately countermanded the liberal laws of the former leader and reimposed the tyranny that was prevalent before. Governor General Izquierdo took advantage of a rebellion in Cavite in 1872 to eradicate this emerging nationalism and ordered the execution of the three priests, detained and exiled the intellectuals, and sowed fear to Filipinos.
But the martyrdom of GomBurZa never silenced the enlightened. Their deaths influence others to continue the struggle, eventually inspiring our national hero, Jose Rizal (Khalil Ramos), who dedicated his novel "El Filibusterismo" to the three priests. A heroic drama laden with intrigue, battle scenes and love of country, GomBurZa is an epic tribute to the people behind the birth of our Filipino consciousness.
