Ilana Glazer is taking her “Broad City” persona to the next level: parenthood. Glazer co-wrote coming-of-age buddy comedy “Babes” with Josh Rabinowitz to chart the hilarity of becoming a parent while still being very much an adolescent at heart.
“Babes” follows inseparable childhood best friends Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), two New York City natives who find themselves in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden decides to have a baby on her own after a one-night stand, their friendship faces its greatest challenge yet, especially as the more responsible Dawn is already a mother of two.
The dramedy marks Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut, and alongside Glazer and Buteau, co-stars John Carroll Lynch, Oliver Platt, Sandra Bernhard, Stephan James, and Hasan Minhaj. Co-writers Glazer and Rabinowitz produced the feature along with Susie Fox, Breean Solberg, and Ashley Fox.

“Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

Hunter Schafer confirmed that she and Rosalía did date for a few months in 2019 and remain good friends in a new interview with GQ.
Schafer was at first reticent to speak on the record about the relationship. While discussing her public romance with Dominic Fike, she acknowledged that she had previously dated other famous people, “but people didn’t know about it. It was completely different.” When asked who, Schaffer said only, “People who care enough and have done their research probably know what’s up.”

Hunter Schafer Has Turned Down ‘Tons of Trans Roles’ Beyond ‘Euphoria’: I ‘Just Don’t Want to Do It’
Hunter Schafer doesn’t want to be identified solely by her transition story.
The actress, who made her acting debut as trans character Jules in “Euphoria,” told GQ that she has turned down playing “tons” of other trans roles, and even tries not to use the term “trans” in interviews.
“I’ve gotten offered tons of trans roles, and I just don’t want to do it. I don’t want to talk about it,” Schafer said. “It’s a privilege, but it’s been very intentional.”
Schafer, who is leading feature debut “Cuckoo” (filmed in 2022) and appeared in 2023’s “Hunger Games” franchise prequel “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” admitted that she does “feel a sense of responsibility” to represent transgender people in the media. However, Schafer she believes the label of “transsexual actress” is “ultimately demeaning” to her craft and career.

There was a time where hate for Anne Hathaway was confoundingly strong. But what had she really done to deserve all of the backlash? It’s not like she was a one-note star – she balanced crappy rom-comcs with terrific performances in movies like Brokeback Mountain and Rachel Getting Married – or was a problem on the set. And yet people had seemingly decided to turn on her sometime in the early 2010s, with a new term, “Hathahate”, being coined. But one who remained faithful in her as an actress and a professional was Christopher Nolan, who cast her as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and again in 2014’s Interstellar. And for that, Anne Hathaway is forever grateful.
In a new Vanity Fair profile, Anne Hathaway said of her time on the outs with Hollywood, “A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were...

Oscar winner Anne Hathaway returns to her romance movie roots with “The Idea of You.” She stars opposite “Mary & George” and “Red, White, and Royal Blue” actor Nicholas Galitzine in the adaptation of Robinne Lee’s viral 2017 novel of the same name. The book “The Idea of You” is generally believed to be inspired by Harry Styles.
Hathaway stars as 40-something single mother Solène, who crosses paths with 24-year-old international rock star/boy band alum Hayes Campbell (Galitzine) while bringing her teenage daughter to Coachella. As the couple begins a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’ superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène is forced to grapple with balancing motherhood, instant fame, and her ex. Ella Rubin, Reid Scott, Annie Mumolo, Viktor White, Raymond Cham, Jaiden Anthony, and Dakota Adan co-star.

Although there’s no distributor yet confirmed for Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development, nearly completed epic Megalopolis, we’re starting to get a sense of when we may see the $100 million epic. The director himself recently indicated it’ll be out in a few months, but according to a new report, a fall release is more likely.
In a round-up of Cannes possibilities, Deadline notes the movie is targeting “a big fall IMAX release,” which means a Venice or North American festival (i.e. TIFF or NYFF) could be more likely than a visit to the Croisette. The article also notes it’s unlikely that Steve McQueen’s Blitz, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, David Lowery’s Mother Mary, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be stopping by Cannes, but George Miller’s Furiosa, Audrey Diwan’s Emmanuelle, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds,...

Mma has been steadily catching up to boxing in terms of combat sport films. While there are plenty of action films that utilize the practice, boxing has been able to capitalize on more character dramas, especially since Rocky hit the scene (no pun intended). While there have been movies like Warrior and Bruised that have showcased mixed martial arts in dramatic films, the popular UFC brand has been geared more towards popcorn movies like Here Comes the Boom and the upcoming Road House remake. The producers of Hereditary are now set to make a UFC-based drama where two Mma fighters, who fight for their own reasons, find themselves on a collision course.
Variety reports that Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz will star in Strawweight as UFC fighters. The synopsis is said to “follow the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One...

Oscar-winner and 2024 Berlinale jury president Lupita Nyong’o and Chloe Grace Moretz are set to enter the ring for the UFC-based mixed martial arts drama “Strawweight.”
The film — being launched at the European Film Market by WME Independent and CAA Media Finance — follows the journeys of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One is a young woman (Moretz) whose life is changed forever when she discovers her passion for the UFC, while the other is a former champion (Nyong’o) who is determined to reclaim her title by reinventing herself. Both want the same thing — respect — but only one can come out on top.
“Strawweight” will mark the feature directorial debut of James M. Johnston. A longtime collaborator of David Lowery, Johnston produced and directed second unit for “The Green Knight,” “The Old Man and the Gun” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” and the upcoming “Mother Mary...

Most industry we spoke to were unhappy about something venue-related whether it be the noisy strikes that took place all week, cost, size of rooms, “maze-like” structure, slow lifts (the fire department was reportedly called Friday to help guests stuck in one of the two lifts serving the hotel’s lobby), parking issues, location or general aesthetic. A24’s acclaimed drama “Past Lives” has been approved for the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, clearing its cast to promote the film at awards campaign events.
Having premiered at Sundance and in theaters this past summer, “Past Lives” is the debut film from writer-director Celine Song. The film stars Greta Lee as Nora, a Korean immigrant and writer who reunites after 24 years with her closest childhood friend Hae Sung (Teo Yoo).
The reunion leads the pair, along with Nora’s husband Arthur (John Maguro) to reflect on the decisions and twists of fate that have shaped their lives. The film has been lauded by critics and has catapulted Lee, Yoo and Maguro into awards contention alongside Song.
A24, as a non-amptp independent studio, has been able to apply for SAG-AFTRA’s interim agreement for some of its ongoing productions, such as David Lowery’s “Mother Mary” starring Anne Hathaway.

The A24 drama Past Lives has landed a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, allowing actors to participate in upcoming events this award season. Premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and bowing in theaters in June, the film finds itself a contender in several categories on the awards circuit including best actress, actor and supporting actor for stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaor.
A24 does not fall under the AMPTP banner so was able to apply for and receive an interim agreement. It allows for its talent to participate in awards-season events that a majority of actors in contending films will not be able to as most of those films are affiliated with studios repped by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

As anyone who pays attention to the movie industry knows, SAG-AFTRA is on indefinite strike. And that, combined with the now months-long WGA strike, means that all film and TV productions involving SAG actors, from Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel to the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” film, have halted until the labor dispute concludes.
Well, almost all productions. Unlike the WGA strike, which has been fairly hard-line, some SAG actors are still allowed to work — provided their productions receive permission from the union. Since July 18, SAG-AFTRA has been providing select independent films with “interim agreements,” which allow them and the SAG-represented actors in them to continue production during the work stoppage. The main requirement for an agreement is that the film must be truly independent — with no ties to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents over 350 American and film production companies in their collective bargaining agreements with SAG.

Rebecca Miller’s family ties to the stage are now part of her onscreen inspiration.
The writer-director, whose father is playwright Arthur Miller, takes on the world of opera with her latest dramedy, “She Came to Me.” Peter Dinklage stars as opera composer Steven Lauddem, whose marriage to Patricia (Anne Hathaway) is one of the many stagnant aspects of his life. As Steven looks for creative inspiration, he finds a spark with a tugboat captain (Marisa Tomei) and a love triangle ensues. Hathaway’s character meanwhile is an Ocd-addled therapist with aspirations of becoming a nun.
Miller enlisted composer Daniel Felsenfeld and Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb to consult on the film for an authentic peek into the world of composers and opera. Lead actress Hathaway additionally produces the film, rounding out her slew of new releases this year with “Eileen” and “Mothers’ Instinct,” while currently in production on A24’s “Mother Mary.

Rebel Wilson brided a little too hard on the set of her latest movie!
The actress and comedian took to her Instagram Story on Thursday to show off a nasty injury she obtained while filming her upcoming wedding comedy, “Bride Hard”, which is currently in production in Savannah, Georgia.
“Not the way I wanted to end this movie!” Wilson captioned the painful-looking shot, showing off the stitches and a bloody nose. “3 stitches and in hospital last night after a stunt accident at 4am.”

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that have halted all major studio productions, “Bride Hard” was granted an Interim Agreement to continue filming amid the strikes, because it is an independently produced film.
“This list includes productions that are signed to agreements within the scope of the strike order, but have signed Interim Agreements allowing them to resume,” reads the official list from SAG-AFTRA.

Rebel Wilson needed stitches after a stunt went wrong on the set of her movie “Bride Hard,” an indie film that was granted a waiver to film during the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The “Pitch Perfect” actress shared a photo of herself with a bloodied nose to her Instagram story, which was screencapped by Entertainment Tonight. She wrote in the caption, “Not the way I wanted to end this movie! 3 stitches and in hospital last night after a stunt accident at 4am.”
While most Hollywood production has been shut down, independent company Balcony 9 Productions was granted a strike waiver by SAG-AFTRA for the Simon West-directed action comedy.

“Sister Sister” by way of A24?
The studio’s first musical film, “Dicks the Musical,” boasts a star-studded cast with killer original songs and a twist on “Parent Trap.”
In the film set to premiere at TIFF this September, two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents, in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles (“Borat”), also starring Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God.
Lead actors Jackson and Sharp wrote the original songs for the film with Karl Saint Lucy; the film is based on Jackson and Sharps’s two-man show from Upright Citizens Brigade in 2014.
Megan Thee Stallion is also tied to an upcoming Netflix movie directed by Josh Safdie and co-starring Adam Sandler. The rapper previously guest-starred on shows like “Good Girls,...

Viola Davis is stepping away from producing action thriller ‘G20’ in support of the ongoing Hollywood strikes. The flick has received an interim agreement from the SAG-AFTRA union along with 100 other independent films, but the actress, 57, is not moving forward with filming. In a move that is likely to set a precedent for A-listers supporting the actors’ and writers’ strike, she said in a statement: “I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA (Writers Guild of America West.)” ‘G20’ received a strike waiver despite the project’s affiliation with Amazon Prime Video, which is set to distribute the film. The subject of interim waivers has been hotly contended since...

In the wake of prominent members airing concerns about SAG-AFTRA’s interim agreements, union leaders are justifying the granting of these pacts — which allow films and TV shows to proceed amid the ongoing performers’ strike — to independent productions.
In a message sent to members Sunday evening, the union’s TV/theatrical negotiating committee maintained that these agreements are a “vital part of our strategic approach” during the 2023 negotiations and strike. The majority of projects that are granted these agreements are “entirely independent” from the companies that comprise the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, whose unresolved negotiations with the union have resulted in the current strike, the group stated. Some exceptions, however, are being made for “extraordinary circumstances mandated by legal considerations, such as Tehran.” (SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland previously told Deadline that Tehran, an Apple TV+-distributed series produced by an Israeli company and shot in Greece,...

Sarah Silverman isn’t quite so upset about the interim agreements that SAG-AFTRA has been handing out during the strike, but the comedian is still pretty “cynical” about the whole thing.
Less than 48 hours after talking to social media to rail against about the dozens of deals the 160,000-member strong guild is making which allow film and TV production supposedly not affiliated with AMPTP companies to move forward, Silverman has had a come-to-Fran-moment, kinda.
“Ok, I met with SAG leadership last night in the form of fearless Fran Drescher and Duncan Crabtree -Ireland, Silverman revealed online Saturday of her conversation with the guild president and national executive director over more than 100 approved projects, as SAG-AFTRA itself noted Friday.
Laying out the argument she and other critics heard from Drescher and Crabtree-Ireland, the frequent participant on the strike picket lines explained on her Instagram feed what had been explained to her:...

Viola Davis is stepping away from producing “G20,” announcing the decision in a statement signaling support for Hollywood’s ongoing strikes. Like over 100 other independent films, the upcoming action thriller received an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA to continue production through the ongoing actors strike. There aren't a lot of cameras rolling in Hollywood right now. A strike by the Writers Guild of America began on May 2, 2023, shutting down 80 percent of productions, and writers were joined by actors on June 14 when trade association AMPTP failed to reach a deal with the union for actors and performers, SAG-AFTRA. This means that actors on any production shooting under an agreement with SAG-AFTRA -- which means the vast majority of movies and TV shows produced by American studios -- are currently on strike from both acting in and promoting struck projects.
There are a few exceptions to that category. Some projects filming overseas are instead produced under agreements with local actors' unions, like the United Kingdom's Equity. In cases like this, SAG-AFTRA members have no legal protection if they choose to strike, even in solidarity. Per Equity's guidance, SAG-AFTRA members working under Equity contracts in the UK...

Kohn’s Corner is a weekly column about the challenges and opportunities of sustaining American film culture.
This week, lost in the chaos of the SAG-AFTRA strike and its impact on the fall movie season, the Canadian investment studio Bron struck through the news cycle with a major update: They’re going bankrupt.
Last summer, I reported on layoffs at the once-ambitious venture co-founded by Aaron and Brenda Gilbert in 2010, as the financier behind “Joker” and “Licorice Pizza” faced the music: Cinema is not a growth business. While Bron made a late pivot to Web3 (remember NFTs …anyone?) the window of opportunity had passed. However, while Bron’s fate may have been inevitable, I found it notable that the company tried to message to the industry that it hadn’t abandoned its interest in film investments; it just wasn’t looking for projects that exceeded $10 million.

Following the news that Luca Guadagnino’s Zendaya-led “Challengers” is being pushed to 2024, A24 has decided to pull Julio Torres’ feature directorial debut “Problemista” from its August release date. The films are a sign of likely more delays to come as studios aren’t eager to release new films during the double strike, with actors unavailable to promote them.
Torres wrote, directed and stars in “Problemista” as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who moves to New York City to fulfill his dream. But as the time on his work visa runs out, he takes a job as an assistant to an erratic art world outcast (played by Tilda Swinton).

The writers strike caused a lot of films and TV shows to shut down production a couple months ago – and a lot more that were able to continue filming without writers have since been shut down by the Screen Actors Guild strike. But if a production happens to be independent, it can receive a waiver that will allow it to continue filming and its actors will continue working, even if they’re SAG members. Deadline and Variety report that some of the projects that have received SAG waivers include the Sam Raimi-produced horror film Don’t Move, the Mel Gibson / Mark Wahlberg thriller Flight Risk, the thriller The Watchers, and Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s Dust Bunny, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver.

Not every TV and film production will stop amid dual strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America. A host of projects stopped work after writers went on strike against media companies for better pay, streaming data transparency and protections against artificial intelligence (among other issues), and many more have paused since actors walked out on July 14.
There are exceptions, however. SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules allow for work on productions covered under different agreements, and the union can grant waivers or sign interim agreements with independent productions. Below is a list of TV shows and films that fall under those designations; this story will be updated as more productions earn waivers.

After granting its first round of waivers for several films Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA has given another group of films permission to shoot during the strike including Ishana Night Shyamalan’s The Watchers, starring Dakota Fanning, and the Sam Raimi-produced Don’t Move. See the updated list below.
What makes The Watchers an interesting case is that while New Line is on board to distribute, the film was a negative pickup, and sources say what helped it get the waiver is that the distribution deal had not been signed yet. therefore making it an indie shoot with independent financing. The studio will have nothing to do with the project until a deal is signed, which would not happen until a strike is resolved.

Los Angeles, July 19 (Ians) Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), the strikers have approved 39 independent projects, after confirming that these projects are not connected with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers).
These also include two projects from the production house A24, which has made movies such as ‘Spring Breakers’ and the Oscar winning 2022 film ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’.
The movies which were given the green light include ‘Mother Mary’ and ‘Death of a Unicorn’.
According to Deadline, sources close to the studio said that just because a waiver was approved does not mean shooting will commence immediately, especially with ‘Death of a Unicorn’, which is still in deep development.
‘Mother Mary’ likely will start shooting again soon. Other approved projects include ‘Rivals of Amziah King’, starring Matthew McConaughey; ‘Dust Bunny’, starring veteran Hollywood stars Sigourney Weaver and Mads Mikkelsen,...

As the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) announced a strike last week, joining the Writers Guild of America’s months-long efforts to cease production work in order to negotiate better working conditions, an interim agreement may allow some independent productions to continue. SAG-AFTRA on Tuesday evening released a list of 39 productions that have been approved to continue filming, including faith series The Chosen, about the life of Jesus Christ; David Lowery’s A24 film Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel; and action-comedy film Bride Hard,...

Hollywood’s historic double strike has shut down the vast majority of productions across the country but not all of them.
On Tuesday, SAG-AFTRA approved certain productions that aren’t affiliated with any of the struck studios or streamers to keep filming. The list includes David Lowery’s Mother Mary and Rebel Wilson comedy Bride Hard.
Independent productions not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers members can apply for waivers from SAG-AFTRA to continue production, the union stated. The waivers mostly apply to independent projects, though Biblical project The Chosen was granted one to finish filming its fourth season even though Lionsgate has distribution rights. Members can work on these shoots without being in violation of the strike order.
To be granted a waiver, a production must sign an interim agreement that “would largely be conformed to the AMPTP agreement on a going-forward basis once the membership ratifies successor agreements,...

The fourth season of Angel Studios’ independent Christian series “The Chosen” was among the list of 39 productions approved by SAG-AFTRA to continue filming during its ongoing actors strike.
Projects that are not being produced by a Hollywood studio that is a member of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers may apply to sign an interim agreement that would allow production to continue and for SAG-AFTRA members to perform without being in violation of the strike order. More productions are expected to be approved in the coming weeks.
While past seasons have been licensed out to streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix, “The Chosen” gets its budget entirely from crowdfunding, as millions have contributed to the production starring Jonathan Roumie as Jesus of Nazareth. While the show is available to stream for free on Angel Studios’ own streaming platform, millions of fans have turned out to see special...

SAG-AFTRA has granted approval to 39 independent productions to shoot during the actors strike, after confirming that they are not linked to AMPTP companies. The list includes two A24 projects, and Deadline first reported on Monday that faith-based series The Chosen was likely to get one, which now is confirmed.
Of the 39 projects given a waiver, A24, which is not part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, had two films granted a waiver, Mother Mary and Death of a Unicorne. Sources close to the studio add that just because a waiver was approved does not mean shooting will commence immediately, especially with Death of a Unicorne, which is still in deep development. Mother Mary likely will start shooting again soon.
Other approved projects include Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey; Dust Bunny, starring Sigourney Weaver and Mads Mikkelsen; and Bride Hard, starring Rebel Wilson.
