"Somebody Somewhere" was a show I'd missed entirely, and it was only because of the Guardian's Top TV of the year list that I came across it. I watched and enjoyed the first season, but this second confirms it as one of the most foul mouthed, but sweet hearted, shows in production at the moment.
Fred (Murray Hill) announced that he's getting married, which causes several of the social circle to appraise their situation. Fred asks Sam (Bridget Everett) to sing at the wedding, so she reconnects with her high school vocal coach, Darlene (Barbara Robertson) to try and get the specific song right. Joel (Jeff Hiller) meets and begins a relationship with Brad (Tim Bagley) but keeps it from Sam, which causes them to fall out. Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) sees the wedding as an opportunity to pivot to a wedding planning business, particularly when Fred agrees to use their family farm as the venue.
I felt the first season of the show required a bit of patience to get past the relatively slow pace to allow you to luxuriate in the character work. Again, not a whole lot happens this season either just the establishing of the new relationship, between Joel and Brad and the effect that has on his relationship with Sam. The performances in this are really naturalistic, especially when it comes to character interaction and so much of the time seems to be spent genuine laughing, you wonder whether much of the dialogue is ad-libbed or whether they're just really good at pretending they're enjoying themselves.
It remains absolutely foul mouthed too, I know that Americans tend to have more of a problem with the "C Word" than we do over here, so I imagine that it does drive some people away and scenes like the explosive diarrhoea one, again come from a much broader show. Conversely the show is so sweet natured it makes each moment of it's runtime feel vital.
This is absolutely the sort of show that I need that Guardian list to tell me about and I'm looking forward to season three.
