When an Oxford professor is found dead in the street it looks like a hit and run although the possibility of it being murder arises when it becomes apparent that he was against the sale of college land for development. Around the same time an old enemy of DI Thursday turns up in Oxford; he insists that he has given up his life of crime but Thursday doesn't believe a word of itÂ… especially when a girl who worked at his club is found dead with a bullet in her headÂ… it looks as though the old gangster may be involved in the land deal and if that is the case Thursday is determined to take him down. While on the case Morse is called home because his father is seriously ill; this leads to Constable Strange helping out in CID; no doubt a stepping stone to his role as Morse's boss in the original series.
This was a solid conclusion to this fine prequel to 'Inspector Morse'; the story had plenty of red herrings which meant the identity of the killer came as quite a surprise even though there were clues early on so it made sense. Shaun Evans put in a solid performance as Morse; giving some surprisingly emotional scenes at his father's bedside. Roger Allum also did a great job as Thursday; it was interesting to learn more about his character's back story and see him disturbed by the case when somebody started threatening his family. On the strength of this series I'm sure we haven't seen the last of 'Endeavour'; I certainly look forward to more.
