It's not bad, but ...
kudzu10016 December 2018
If you are into this kind of a movie, it's not bad. I have to admit that it is not as good as 2004's "Primer". most of the characters, other than of the protagonist, are either one or two dimensional. And, the protagonist herself is barely developed. I'm not even sure why the boyfriend is even in the plot other than to provide something else to deal with. If it wasn't for the fact that he has a few lines to say in the film, a clife sized picture would have done just as well.

And, if you have any knowledge of quantum physics, you will quickly understand that the writers don't really understand the concepts and are just using the concepts as the "magic elements" of the film.

Most of the special effects are traditional with a little CGI thrown in at the end.

If you choose to watch it, prepare to suspend all belief.

Poor casting, poor characters fail to convince in this time-bender of a movie
robbotnik200025 January 2018
I was unable to achieve belief in the characters or to care about the characters in this attempt at melding recent news in the physics world to a science fiction time slipping plot. There seemed to be an attempt to quote some items of physics theory and then go rapidly to gobbledygook, which is not a crime in sci-fi plots but in this case does not achieve liftoff. The main character was to young and glib to be taken seriously as a deep thinking physicist.

Charmless Sci-Fi B-flick nonsense
jmzalapa7 April 2018
Ho boy.... Where to start with this dumpster fire of a film. Look, I like me some Sci-fi, especially about time paradoxes. I'm willing to suspend disbelief and overlook science movie mumbo jumbo; I'm willing to forgive bad acting; I'm willing to ignore continuity errors; I'm capable of overlooking bad, soap opera lighting; I will even go as far to turn a blind ear to the cheeseball score that sounds like it was borrowed from the Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and every craptacular, early 90s Stephen King film. But for the love of all that his holy, I cannot ignore all of them at once!!!

This movie is an "I hate Daddy" whinefest masquerading as an intelligent time paradox movie, which it tries to steal from the better examples of the latter and comes up horribly short. The scientific research probably consisted of a Wikipedia search on time travel, mixed in with big words in the wrong place and nonsensical equations written down in an attempt to seem smart. The acting has all the subtlety and range of a highschool melodrama (seriously, the only casting requirement was "can you cry a bunch and call out 'Brian' a bunch" for the lead) and the supporting characters are 2D cut outs of movie tropes. Come to think of it, the protagonist is a 2D stock character of the angsty teen girl with some ability that makes her special. Lazy editing features a cafe scene that switches from day to night and back again and the rest of the interior scenes are shot with so much top light that it's just silly (the camera work is decent, though).

I secretly hoped that at some point in the movie, Mike Nelson or Joe would appear at the bottom of the screen and, with the help of his robot friends, vastly improve the viewing experience. Sadly, there's nothing under that Christmas tree for me. I gave three stars because the camera work pulls off some nice shots... It's about the only redeeming quality to this boneheaded, lazy, unoriginal and overall dumb film.

Disguised

I read a review saying this was the bees knees in a lot more words. It isn't, but a reasonable watch in my opinion. The story is OK, if you like Sci-fi and time travel then Displacement ticks those boxes but it's not pulling up any trees. Timecrimes and Triangle are similar films to this but both are far superior. Although logic gets thrown out the window when watching most time travel films, you can follow a certain logic to them which comes from the writers/directors having a clear idea of what they are trying to accomplish. For instance, the time-travel logic in Timecrimes was clever and gripping and exciting. Yes you can picks holes but it is still fun to go along with it. In Displacement there is a clear lack of fun and minimal intrigue. It did keep me watching until the end so it has enough intrigue in that respect but it didn't excite me as much as other time travel films I've seen such as Timecrimes and Triangle to name but two. Overall, I would say give it a go as there is a dearth of new time travel films to watch right now, here's hoping that will change soon.

The weirdness factor is off the scale

Warning: Spoilers
Has some quantum physical plot-theme spoilers. Not real heavy physical plot spoilers.

The film opens up with Cassie Sinclair (Courtney Hope) waking up in an ice bath,no memory on how she got there and a note to herself. We soon discover she is in a time entanglement or loop and needs to find the "negation point" to stop the merry-go-round.

Cassie attempts to figure out what has happened, she trusts no one, especially the folks who have her duct taped to a chair. The film does the "see how clever we are" scenes of repeating themselves adding another viewpoint/element that we have seen so many times in other features. While the film is classified as science fiction, it is more of a drama/mystery with a science fiction background. The special effects were extremely inexpensive and unimpressive. It first starts explaining time travel with "particle pairs" and "quantum physics." Then at 32 minutes into the film it was Einstein's gravitational loop....and quantum physics. Later it was the "Philadelphia Experiment" which was radar ....and quantum physics. There was no distinct answer and I am not sure how these all interact and wonder why they didn't toss out "string theory" while they were at it.We never got to see the actual machine that causes time travel, it was operated remotely in a hotel room on a laptop and magically effected the person who pushed the button.

Films that have good science tend to have lousy characters. Films that have great characters, tend to have lousy science. This one was more about character and why Cassie wanted to create time travel which I found to be a little underwhelming...save the earth? Stop a war? An assassination? Nope...to take her dying mom to see the ocean on last time.

The film had a made-for-TV style soundtrack and I felt like I was watching a film on Lifetime and not SyFy which for some people is a good thing.

Guide: 1 F-word. No sex or nudity. Winner of several best Science fiction awards.

Yech...such drivel...
lgrosenthal12 June 2017
I'm a hard core SF fan. I'm a physics buff. This film was such a bad take on quantum theory that I had to ditch it before the end, in order to keep my dinner down.

Setting aside the "science" in "Science Fiction," there really isn't anything new here. post-grad girl's dad steals her thesis notes... Really? The boyfriend is truly a waste of a character (could have been a cardboard cutout), another guy (best friend? boyfriend's friend?) is another waste. Bruce Davison is utterly unbelievable (not is best work by far), and Courtney Hope seems unable to utilize any emotion other than anger, hostility, or panic.

All in all, skip it. You have better things to do with your life than give up nearly two hours of it to this nonsense.

Quantum entanglement has nothing to do with temporal Physics
lopezpatricia-061391 August 2020
This film was infuriatingly wrong in so many ways. Even Star Trek bases their sci fi on real physics . I mean I this film she initiated the temporal wave from her dam hotel room. You'd need at least a particle accelerator. We see no machine capable of even being a science experiment much less the satisfy sci fi buffs.

Horrible Direction and Dialogue & Very Boring
ronniehrubin21 January 2021
Like many of you that have watched or are considering watching this movie, I'm a time-travel movie fan. Guessing for most of you, the first "Back to the Future" movie is probably one of your favorite movies. Well, I made it through 40 minutes of this time-travel movie and could not continue. The dialogue was horrible which made the directing horrible. Unfortunately, this also contributed to horrible acting as well. The MC was unwatchable. She may very well be a good actress with better material and maybe a better director. The movie tells us there's a displacement in time that can only be fixed by the MC's thesis equation. I could not finish to find out what happens, as the movie was just way too slow and boring! Sorry, but I cannot recommend this time-travel movie.

Well crafted Science Fiction movie.
corvettedave26 May 2017
Great story line with well written characters. Cinematography is spot on. I wish there were a sequel. Loved seeing Bruce Davidson in his gritty roll. The whole idea of time jumping has appealed to me since I first saw SlaughterHouse 5. This film compares favorably in how the time jump is portrayed.

Boring

Boring, corny, bad acting, bad writing, very dated script, would be corny in 1967. Terrible.

Bending the Rules of Time Has its risks.
cuerpaso19 May 2017
Santa Monica's Laemmle Monica hosted this intriguing tale that involved a captivating concept that left you wondering about the infinite possibilities of life. The creative cinematography aligned well with the theme and what a pleasure to see Bruce Davidson shining on the big screen. Awaiting the DVD to delve into this film again. Exciting to see this idea come to reality.

I had fun for the most part.
MuggySphere19 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it was a neat little movie. It's about this woman played by Courtney Hope who kicks off an experiment in quantum physics only it backfired and she keeps appearing and shifting through various times as she tries to work out what is happening to her and fix the problem. But as she goes other versions of her appear around the place, and there's a neat scene where she's watching one of those and trying to change events for the better but to no effect.

It's scifi but not big budget scifi and there's no big special effects which I thought I'd be disappointed with but truth be told I liked this movie for its minimal use of that, since it was also a fairly low budget movie. It's the drama and story that kept me interested and it's a hard movie to describe in a few words without giving away a huge chunk of it.

Anyway 6/10 for me.

Displacement! A Disapoinment!
borhank13 February 2024
Displacement is a Sci Fi thriller about a certian event that occurs in time and a group of physicits try to turn back time to make this one event not happen and we go on the journey with them.

A great concept of a movie however poorly executed and the actors did as good as a job as they could with the script and direction that they have been given.

There are a lot better Time travelling Sci Fi flicks. Give this one a miss and you won't be displaced with disapointment.

For movies that I have watched Displacement was the hardest movie to get through and complete. I really did not want to finish this but i had to power through.

Not suitable for children either.

A Triumph of Independent Filmmaking! Don't miss it!
nealr-6781121 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In an ideal world everyone you know would be talking about how intellectually stimulating and emotionally powerful DISPLACEMENT is, along with how it deserves a best-picture nomination far more than a certain incredibly over-hyped and over-rated movie last year that expected us to believe (as a fundamental requirement of enjoying the movie) the "profound" and "scientific" concept that all a person has to do to see into the future is to learn the proper foreign language! (Personally I found it far easier to believe that Lisa could see through time after eating Apu's extremely spicy cooking.) Alas, we live in a time where the movies that most people see are those with advertising budgets of millions upon millions of dollars, and the establishment (from professional reviewers to amateur bloggers) tends to overlook how nonsensical many such movies are are for fear of offending the famous "auteur" directors (or powerful production company/studios) behind them. Rather, the establishment instead tends to take out its frustration on modest-budget independent films, where it can blow out of all proportion the scientific flaws they contain with little danger of retribution.

To paraphrase Shakespeare's Anthony, "So let it be with DISPLACEMENT!" But unlike him, I will admit from the outset that I come to praise this movie, which slowly builds from its scientific/thriller foundation to a highly dramatic and emotional catharsis whose power you don't see coming -- and which few movies these days, regardless of production or marketing budget, can match.

And yet (as we discover along the way) this scene flows naturally from the fundamental plot of the movie, which is a result of main character Cassie's deep need to spend just a few more minutes with her late mother, and help her fulfill her dying wish. As someone who lost the most important person of his life a few years ago, I can certainly understand how Cassie feels. If you can't relate to this desire (to do almost anything to get a few final minutes with a deeply loved one who died too soon), then I suspect that you are either young or extremely fortunate. (Though it occurs to me that such fortune comes at the price of having had a lesser experience of what life is truly all about.) In any case, if you don't like the science, ignore it. (Even I found a moment here and there a bit much.) For it doesn't really matter, as virtually all of us have long accepted the idea of time-travel in movies (including the idea that things often go wrong), and the scientific specifics delved into in this film to justify it (for those "nerdy" types who are interested in it), while not really necessary, are no worse (in fact better than) most films.

My only significant criticism of the movie is how difficult it is the first time through to follow the first twenty minutes or so. But it's important to note that this is NOT (as is the case with many movies) because of any flaw in the story per se, but simply because -- in addition to following Cassie's trips through time -- the movie also cuts to scenes involving what might be called (I'm trying to not be too spoilery here) Cassie Prime, without adequately orienting us first.

Thus my fear is that some will be so confused by the beginning that they will give up on the movie. Which would be a shame, for the second time around virtually everything makes sense and, as I said before, the movie builds to an emotional climax that is well worth the time and effort even if you do have to watch the movie a second time before fully experiencing it.

I also love how, at the end of the movie, on one level everything is reset to how it once was, and yet on some metaphysical level Cassie's character has been changed -- as shown (amongst other things) by her radically different attitude toward her dad.

Every cast member was clearly devoted to his project and gives it their all, a testament -- along with the great cinematography and visual effects -- to the quality of the direction. And in yet another surprise for a movie of this budget (which looks like it cost millions of dollars more than it reportedly did) is the use of real musicians! Which is undoubtedly one of the things (along with the acting, directing, and composer) that makes many of the scenes, especially the climatic one, so powerful and moving.

In sum, whether of budget great or small, this is the best movie I've seen in a long time. Don't miss it.
