Promising first episode
dg0244515 July 2013
I hadn't seen any previews for this show and just happened to stumble upon it. I actually really enjoyed show, and was pleasantly surprised. While the situations in the show may be somewhat unrealistic, it reminds me of some older movies depicting shenanigans at camp. If you don't sit and criticize a fake TV show for being "unrealistic," it's quite enjoyable to just sit back and enjoy the character development. It's obvious they tried to make the characters cover a wide range in an attempt to appeal to multiple ages, from high school, to college, to middle aged. Character development seemed to get off to a promising start. I find myself looking forward to next episode and hoping they continue to reveal more about characters' pasts and different sides to them. Most of the situations set up for future episodes didn't seem to promise emotional drama (except possibly one), but instead seemed to imply chances for the characters to grow and form relationships in future episodes. This show may appeal to more of a slightly younger crowd, such as myself. As always, though, it is difficult to predict if a show will continue its promising start. I thought the first episode left the door open for a show that I will enjoy watching in the future. I hope they take it in the right direction.

Sudsy teen soap deserved renewal
SnoopyStyle2 October 2013
It's about a little summer camp run by Mack Granger (Rachel Griffiths). It's a quaint place where people return year after year, and no cell phone is allowed.

If there is one problem, it's the lack of diversity. It's understandable since this is filmed in Australia, but they really need to try harder. The show is a full of hormonal kids and hormonal Rachel Griffiths. It's a sudsy soap and it works great on that level. The acting is first rate from Griffiths as usual, and also the lead Tom Green.

This was an NBC summer replacement show, and got canceled after only 1 season of 10 episodes. It had passable ratings for a summer show 0.8 in 18-49 for the final episode. By comparison 'Crossing Lines' got a 0.4 in their final episode on the same network. Chances are the different production structure saved 'Crossing Lines' and got 'Camp' canceled. It's a shame. This show deserves another chance more than 'Crossing Lines'.

Hormone Camp!
blanbrn21 August 2013
This new little NBC series is funny, and cute it's all right for a summer series it's light and a little sexy. As many can remember their teen years when they fell in and out of love and plus hormones were at a rage! "Camp" takes place at Little Otter Family Camp with a group of kids who while spending a summer learn about life, sex, and love. And also a few hot scenes are found of sexy teenage girls making love for the first time! Heading up the camp is a mom(played by the strong and tough Rachel Griffiths="Six Feet Under" and "Brothers and Sisters"). And thru it all tough love will conquer all as each week life lessons are learned. Anyway nothing of a major watch it's still fine to see the sexy Rachel Griffiths at work again, still check "Camp" out for some feel good fun.

That would be a cool summer job, being outdoors around all ages

Not bad at all! Stumbled on this show while I was online with my Comcast account. The show feels down to earth with a little bit of everything happening that everyone can relate too. The young and old actors seem convincing in there roles with some funny moments and serious moments. To be realistic tho how far can this show really go. Just like any TV show out there, having a good cast is one thing but it's the creative minds of the writers and producers that will make or break the show. I like the show and hope it goes far because for some reason I've been glued to every episode so I'll just sit back and enjoy the show. Keep it up!

Not Your Grandfathers Summer Replacement
A_Different_Drummer15 July 2013
As with everything else strange and wonderful that is happening in media these days -- remember, the History Channel just did a 6 hour movie starring Kevin Costner and it was brilliant -- you need context. And the context is that TV has seen more changes in the last 5 years than in the last 50. Literally. As all the various types of media compete for that most-coveted incremental viewer (who can then be parlayed into the even-more-coveted advertising sponsor), the Rule Book goes out the window, and so does even a pretence of censorship. As I write this I see that the Muses who rule TV are even promising a fall 2013 series based on the story of the Headless Horseman. Won't THAT be special? In other words, this year it appears we have all opted for the Red Pill and have entered an era of TV which knows no bounds, obeys no conventions, and where anything - literally anything - can be repackaged and re tasked into a series. IN THIS CONTEXT, it becomes clear that here the writers and producers have taken every camp movie ever done (good or bad, who cares), tossed them all into the proverbial blender, chosen a production setting so remote and obscure that (possibly) the Australian Tourist Bureau PAID THEM to shoot there, and took a chance that someone might like it. For this reviewer, the series has a kind of wacky energy which is engaging, and the actors all seem to be using this exercise as some of sort of springboard to better parts and better days. I suppose this is where I am supposed to say how terrible it is, but the fact is that Rachel Griffiths is good in almost everything she does, and the hyper-kinetic feel of the show offers a strange attraction. Bottom line, not as bad as the critics say, not as good the network was hoping. Better than reruns of HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL.

In short, fulfilling in every way a television show can be.
imanthonyviola6 September 2013
Camp takes classic motifs and life lessons and gives it a modern twist and a hint of sarcasm and comedy. I was especially surprised at myself that I became such a fan of a show like this and yet I can't get enough. Creating the setting based around a family summer camp was ingenious, kind of an escape from the overused hospital or police station backgrounds. The unknowns that make up the teen actors, like Thom Green, Tim Pocock, Dena Kaplan, Lily Sullivan, Charlotte Nicdao, and Charles Grounds, each give their all by showing intense acting talent, both funny and dramatic. I always look forward to the next episode and I desperately hope that this well-written and inspiring show gets renewed by NBCUniversal next season.

Accents
amma12-734-77822129 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have started to watch this show. The storyline is engaging enough or is it just that my favorite characters from Dance academy are in it. Dena Kaplan, Tom green, Tim Pocock, Issi Durant, Jordan Rodrigues and Xenia Goodwin( who gets hit by a water balloon shot by Sarah you don't see her face) all star in it. This series was shot in Australia, has a complete cast of Australians but feels the need to add American accents. What's wrong with our one? The American one is no better and it's nice when real Aussies do a normal accent without the Americans having to add the bogan side to it. I believe it's silly. Let them keep their accents. At the end of the day, the American one can get annoying . Keep the accents Aussie!

Wow! I love it
krystal-waters2 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Am i the only one that thinks the whole cast of Dance Acacemdy is in this show??? Well... I at least know what happened to Abigal and Ethan over their summer holiday away in Spain (Wink-Wink... Nudge-Nudge)

Just having a laugh to myself, Anyway. Wow, What can i say. I love this show. I think it brings out what actually happens at summer camps. The teen romance and drama, the activities, the fun, the ups and downs and well everything what i think a US summer camp should look like. I love the show. Not because i go to see Tim Pococks abs for like 5 minutes. I just paused and just stared... BUT the fact that I also seen some of the actors grow up on Dance Acacemdy, shows me that they can do something other than dance. And play different characters. Also half the cast are Australian, so i love it anyway.

My point is, its a teen romance, comedy, adventure, mostly a teen related show and what happens at camp. I love it, and hopefully so do you!!! Enjoy!!!

More please!
hollyworld-0763224 December 2020
I wish this series had a chance to live more. It takes a while sometimes for certain series to take off, and this is one of them. We need a good camp TV series out there, there would be a lot of camp people that would enjoy it. This was a good effort.

Camp- Inoffensive but Uninteresting
jobear248416 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Camp is mid season filler set in the summer season at a "family camp" where parents and kids spend months away from work and school communing with nature- which I'm not sure actually exists outside of TV land. It takes place in a John Hughes-like world where even the nerds are hot. There are a lot of teens that look like seniors in college pushing a lot of angst around and starting to discover themselves through sex, while the adults are discovering themselves too- with a lot of anger sex. The plot is extremely thin and incredibly cliché- the owner of "Little Otter" needs money, the guy who owns the camp across the lake where all the rich kids go wants to buy her out, the main nerd is going to win the heart of the outcast girl, the talent show has to be "saved", etc. Rachel Griffiths from Six Feet Under anchors a cast of young unknowns that all seem likable enough. She and the young man who plays her son were easily the most watchable and real part of the show.

There's nothing offensive here, nothing that made me cringe- but there's nothing interesting here either, except maybe the soundtrack of popular music that comes blasting in at the beginning and end of each act, and sometimes in between. The title tells you how much imagination is present. I thought maybe it would be awesomely kitschy and make the title have more than one meaning, but my hopes were set too high. There's a few WTF moments too- like when a raid on the rival camp that supposedly serves the same type of family clientèle reveals they serve beer on ice at an awesome buffet attended to by uniformed waiters. For the most part the pilot seemed to be suffering an identity crisis, even for something advertised as a "dramedy". Within the first five minutes someone got a fishhook to the nose and another person took a kiddie punch to the crotch, and then the story evolved to include a failed Olympic swimmer, a failed marriage, and even touched on modern homophobia. It was scattered and was definitely trying too hard. The gay couple was black and Latino, with an Asian and Indian(?) child, just so no one can accuse NBC of not being diverse. This feels like a show that belongs on ABC Family. I'm not sure what the future or time structure of this show is going to be either, as it has an automatic limit in that even summers that seem to last forever eventually end.

Speaking of nationalities, this brings me to a bit of an off topic rant. This show was shot in Australia. Rachel Griffiths is Australian, though here she puts on an American accent. What's so confusing about this is the owner of the rival camp (whom she winds up sleeping with as well as competing with, by the way) is played by Rodger Corser, who is also Australian, and gets to speak in his actual accent. Why can't Rachel Griffiths speak in her natural accent too? Are we not smart enough to figure out it's all supposed to take place in the USA if there's different accents? Or are Australian accents the new politically acceptable "evil" accent now that the Cold War is over? Granted, Brits and Aussies usually can do American accents flawlessly- like the three Brits currently in the main cast of the incomparable Walking Dead- but when they don't have to, why make them? There wasn't enough here for me to continue to watch this show. If they had just been a little braver, a little darker, a little funnier it would have tipped the scales. It needed originality thrown in there somewhere, and considering the preview for next week showed a scene ripped directly out of The Parent Trap, I'm confident in my decision not to watch.

funny and basic and a joy to watch
paulashjordan30 August 2013
I caught the first one of these and was skeptical as we don't have things like camp in the UK. So I thought id watch it just to get an insight of American summer holidays. (away from spring break). I thought it was for children but was pleasantly surprised that it was a family show with lots of adult themes, coming of age and relationships. This is a must for anyone who like the feel good factor and the normal every days struggles in life even in holiday season. The characters really pull you into there personality's and make you feel what they are experiencing. The whole feel of the show is a lovely joyful experience and one i am glad to be able top watch due to the wonder of the internet. Well done guys.

Great show
wolfwoman-0095230 May 2015
I think it's a great show I look forward to watching it every Sunday. it's funny and it shows what camps can be like. I love it and as always Rachael Griffith does a great job. I love anything she stars in, she's one of our great Aussie actresses. The show is just showing what kids really get up to at camps and to me they are having fun. I wish we had camps like this in Australia. And it's great to see so many Aussie actors in the one American show. It's just a shame it wasn't given a real chance. At least it does beat all the reruns of my house rules or a movie we've seen over and over again. Its a show that let's us see kids growing and becoming themselves away from schools. I think it's a fun show.

Become much of the same thing again and again
osj250723 February 2015
Summercamp is not really a thing where I come from, but this reminds me of my summer scout camps as a kid, being outside, having fun, doing different activities etc.

There are many good things about this series, but most of it involves the summer and the clothes people (girls) wear at that time. A lot of cute girls is on this camp, the boys are more nerdy or as boys are not that grown up :)

Unfortunately the humor could have been better, it is trying too hard or something, so it becomes more strange behavior from the teenage boys and awkward situations then actual fun things going on, it works for most parts, but does become much of the same thing again and again.

A fun but short lived series
POIguy20 April 2020
Camp is a fun mid season filler designed to give viewers a little summer fun from their couches. The series isn't really bad, but it does lack direction and ambition. There isn't a strong premise and has a lot of teen angst. I still enjoyed it for the most part. It serves as a nice distraction from other more serious shows. Wish it would've went on longer.

Nice mix of humor and drama to make a fun show
shalimar-423 July 2019
My wife and I appened upon this little gem by accident way back when it was new.. decided to give it a shot and enjoyed its entire season. Sadly some dolt killed this series.. a big mistake as is easily seen by its IMDB rating alone. It could have been better sure but nothings perfect and in our opinion it easily was worth the time spent

Suffice to say the series is worth the time to watch for a light hearted laugh and while it is not currentlyly avail on bluray etc etc there are some sources still where the entire 1st season can be ound with a little digging. :)

I also advise everyone ignore the retentive rantings of reviewers like "reapersgames" whom obviously needs to get out more and spend less time worrying about what others do and more introspection oh his/her own obvious failings.

Uh . . . What just happened?
barrywilliams99312 July 2013
I was waiting for this thing with great expectation because the commercial teased it to be a wacky romp through summer camp. WRONG! Not only was it laced with awkward references to adult sex (including a scene of a couple doing the horizontal bop) there was also drugs and divorce. The only scene remotely funny was shown in the advertisements for the show.

I suffered through the first 20 minutes of this stupid melodrama about a bunch of dysfunctional "adults" trying to run a failing summer camp before deciding there's gotta be something better to watch. I was lucky enough to land on a competition show of people saving cat's asses.

Not funny and not entertaining. Just as Jon Lovitz said many times in the animated series "The Critic": IT STINKS!

Yet Another show teaching it's teenage target audience its OK to be a slut!
reapersgames1 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This review is aimed mostly at episode 4 but its been pretty horrible the whole time for these reasons! It's Yet Another show Glorying a cheating slut(counsellor Sarah) and immoral behavior!!! Why do so many of you stupid writers think it's not only OK, but you Glorify, a woman in a relationship who Cheats by kissing another guy! You even have the nerve to "explain(try to justify)" it by her saying to her boyfriend "I just wonder what it's like to be someone else, just for a little while" Seriously wtf is wrong with you people!! And people wonder why society is as screwed up as it is today, Especially when our younger generation is Taught(by example!) that it's OK to be a slut, you might even get on TV for doing it(teen mom)!! You idiots are too stupid to think about how your target audience(teenagers!) perceive what they see!! They're teenagers, not adults! They don't think like adults, they just see a girl on TV Cheating on her man, by kissing another guy, and the show is even Glorifying it by giving them a romantic song and ending the episode with that scene! Seriously you idiots need to think before you write this crap!! I won't lie a lot of hot babes wearing bikini's most of the show what guy(16yrs to 50yrs) wouldn't want to see that, but you idiots need to learn to write better life experiences!! Even the adults act like teenagers 90% of the time! It's pathetic! Well my rant is over, but our children are still seeing Horrible examples of what life should(that's how they perceive it) be like, on TV!!! No wonder society is going to hell now a days!!
