Packed with decent chills, an underwhelming act makes this mediocre
ritesh6573 April 2023
Gaslight is a partially engaging, middling horror mystery which doesn't really get you excited or amused. The world building of a horror premise, the errieness of the atmosphere, dark colour grading , intriguing characters all had the potential to make this one a remarkable bollywood horror mystery but unfortunately due to tacky lead performance by Sara and dull second half screenplay makes the brilliant climax lose steam. Chitrangada and Vikrant Massey are formidable in their layered characters. Overall, a satisfactory mystery thriller which can is passable if you can ignore Sara's underwhelming act.

A rather enjoyable mystery thriller...
paul_haakonsen4 June 2023
When I sat down to watch the 2023 Indian mystery thriller "Gaslight", it was actually my second Indian movie ever to watch. I've always avoided their movies, as I thought it was all laced with random singing and dancing. But I found out that it is the Bollywood subgenre. So I have been missing out on a large number of movies here actually.

And thus, I opted to sit down and watch director Pavan Kirpalani's 2023 mystery thriller without even a moment of doubt. Sure, I hadn't heard about the movie prior to watching it. But that hardly really mattered, because I do believe in giving a movie a fair chance.

I have to say that writers Neha Sharma, Pavan Kirpalani and Ameet Mehta put together a rather enjoyable and entertaining script and storyline. It was a traditional mystery with some supernatural elements to it, in the style of keeping the audience in the dark and guessing as to what it going on and who done it. And it worked. Because the storyline in "Gaslight" was really good, and thoroughly entertaining from start to end.

Needless to say that I was not familiar with the cast ensemble in "Gaslight", but they had a great ensemble and actors and actresses here. Sara Ali Khan (playing Meesha), Chitrangda Singh (playing Rukmini) and Vikrant Massey (playing Kapil) really carried the movie quite well with their performances.

Visually then I found "Gaslight" to be good. It is not a movie that utilizes an abundance of special effects, but director Pavan Kirpalani makes really good use of the ambience, lighting and building up atmosphere to cement the storyline and slowly establish a thrill. It was quite nicely done actually.

I was more than genuinely entertained by this movie, and very much postively surprised with the storyline. If you enjoy mystery thrillers, then "Gaslight" is well-worth sitting down and spending 111 minutes to watch.

My rating of director Pavan Kirpalani's 2023 movie "Gaslight" lands on a well-deserved six out of ten stars.

I really liked the movie...Not sure why it has been rated so low
ravigetsyou-469632 April 2023
Loved the overall dark theme of the movie, some good twists & turns are there. I am sure this movie is far better than Pathaan or Prem Ratan Dhan paayo, etc..After seeing such bad reviews,i thought to stop watching it for a min but then wanted to give it a try. Every director and storyteller has their way of delivering a plot & i was always interested that what's coming next. It kept the thrill intact & performances of everyone is great. Only at certain places in 1st half, the movie felt slower but later the pace was nice & ended really well. Not all movies can impress everyone, but i liked this movie.

This girl needs some serious insights that she can't act.
amanbam4406 April 2023
Sara Ali khan can't act. She just mugs up the dialogues and takes around 100 takes to deliver. So obvious in all her scenes.

No wonder she is best friends with jhanvi kapoor. Both are meant for commercial movies in which they play second fiddle.

Vikrant massey is as usual brilliant.

Akshay Oberoi daper as always. I wish he gets some strong roles.

Same old boring script shot in absolute darkness to give horror or thriller vibes. From starting of the movie you will sense the climax.

Yet another flop where actress fails to lead.

Writing this review is another pain because I have to complete the minimum characters.

Pass!!

A predictable storyline
nkpratham2 April 2023
Gaslight starts of really slow with each character taking their own time to setup their role in the storyline.

Once the characters are introduced it takes a lot of time to come up to the storyline. The role of Sara Ali Khan as Meesha is quiet confusing. It feels that Sara is trying really hard to fit into the role. Vikrant and Chitrangada characters lack the basic aspects of acting and it usually feels that they are out of place in the movie.

The plot of the story is highly predictable. And the lack/ partial background score does not quantify the movie as a Thriller. The storyline could have been conveyed a lot better.

Tedious and boring watch !
just_ashishsingh31 March 2023
Here's a thriller that never grips or thrills. From the first frame to the last this movies is mired in boredom and half away through you just want this to end and whatever little twists that come in the end hardly surprise you.

The story is about this princess played by Sara who is coming home to meet her father after ages and is welcomed by her step mom (Chitrangada) and the manager (Massey). But the father is no where to seen and her quest to figure out where he is begins. There is this distant annoying cousin, a police SP with some jump scare scenes to get your attention but unfortunately neither of the characters and scenes engage with you. And as mentioned above by the time the mystery is solved you hardly bother and just want this stupidity to end. The story and screenplay have no depth and direction is super weak.

Performances wise Massey does well along with Chitrangada who looks stunning in some scenes and emotes well. Sara as the main protagonist is completely bland and has nothing much to offer in this not so well written character.

So overall an avoidable fare ! Thank good they have not chosen the theatre route for this one or perhaps they knew.

Absolutely incredible movie with amazing visuals, epic action sequences, and electrifying musical numbers. When I started watching this movie I could not stop watching it despite the hour runtime. It's just that good. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. This movie is truly a spectacle! Every moment in this Movie Feels like the Scene is actually roaring at you through the screen. This Movie needs to be Seen on the Big Screen if you missed it in the Theaters then please watch this on a Big Screen Television that has the minimum size of 80inches. This movie deserves that respect! The bigger the screen the more the Awesomeness.

Overall movie was good

Warning: Spoilers
Gaslight is a official remake of Hollywood movie Gaslight and I am sure many of us didn't watched the original as well as me.

Movie Is about meesha who came to visit his dada palace after 15 years but it turn out to be his Dada is death and she is trying to slove the mystery by herself how her Dada died because no one believes her.

Points I liked about Movie - Music / sfx was good , cinematography was beautiful the colour grading of the movie gives a creepy atmosphere to the movie which gives horror touch to the movie Points I disliked about Movie - The plot twist in the movie is so predictable that I predicted the twist from miles away and first half of the movie is slow it takes lot of time to introduce the characters.

Overall I enjoyed the movie and you should definitely check out Gaslight if you have disney plus subscription....

Darkest movie ever I have seen
ravirkg-002452 April 2023
If you are bored of feeling healthy you must watch this movie to get eye sprain and headache because hardly I have seen any light in the entire movie. I know that dark seen are being shooted at night only. But they can use small watt bulb at least so that we can watch what is happening in dark. While watching this movie you have to pressurise your eye to get pain in them following by headache. I am totally disappointed after watching it. 3 points are given for story line, the star cast used and role played by them. I heard that this movie was shooted in just 36 days. In such a short time span what can be expected.

I went into this not knowing the plot.. I don't even know what to say except for WOW.. Great acting and the plot just intensified.. The ending left me blown away!! Soooo good!!. This is one of the best, most real movies I have ever watched. .Wow. No words really, just ... WOW. After the movie finished, I sat there, mouth agape for about 10 minutes, and it stuck with me for a few days after. Full stars. Salvages itself at the end
Biswas_2 April 2023
Gaslight is a horror suspense thriller but actually there are no ghosts thankfully. It talks about a daughter coming home after years only to find her beloved father missing and then begins her search only to find some dark truth.

Well, for me, this film was a 3 or 4 stars until the last and final twist got revealed that actually was pretty interesting if not extraordinary. I mean, atleast i could not predict it from a distance by any means . However, there is another twist before that which was easily predictable which is why I said until before the climax the film was a 4 star for me. That final twist salvaged the film to a good extent.

The film has a really really dark tone to it to such an extent that i had to keep my phone and Hotstar 's brightness to Max to properly veiw the proceedings. This was really not needed. This film could have been much better had this dark horror like atmosphere not set (mini spoiler : there is no real horror actually all is explained later but this is not the unpredictable part).

Vikrant Massey shines in the film especially in the climax. Throughout the film he stayed in the backseat but in the climax he literally goes overdrive mode. Chitrangada looks hot as always and gives a decent performances. The lowest of all is Sara. Man she cannot act at all. Some scene where she shouts is really poor. Sara cannot act well without a good director .

Another good thing to note is that there is no unnecessary romance or songs in the film which is good .

Pavan Kriplani's work could have been a little better had he made some alternative choices in many cases in this film.

Overall, this a decent time pass suspense thriller that manages to salvage itself at the end. It is one of those films that you will feel is really running average until the final twist and climax arrives (I remember there was film , of a different genre named Bank Chor, that was running exactly like this, below average, until the final climax salvaged it to some extent).

Darker than the blackest night on earth
kathanbros31 March 2023
The movie was so dark that I and my family had to turn off all the lights to watch the movie. Some parts in the movie are missing and even somethings are there which you cannot understand. The switch of things was very boring. The actions played by everyone was good. There are many things which haven't been ended up nicely. I think it was an average movie. It would be better to not watch it with old people and children. At first it would all seem like it was horror. Everyone was bored of this movie and were looking for some good scenes which would make the picture interesting and good. In short a very average movie.

Small characters really filled their gap in the plane. The journey escalated with smooth ride but bumps of goriness for people who gunshot feelings of who they think are lower than masterminds. You can't Really miss this one!!!! Full of suspense, twists and turns, mystery and awe factor. The performances of were outstanding, with both actors fully embodying their complex characters. A Super Dark Thriller That Couldn't Find Light
SAMTHEBESTEST31 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Gaslight (2023) : Movie Review -

Pavan Kirpalani brings a unit of Sara Ali Khan, Chitrangda Singh, Vikrant Massey, Rahul Dev, and Akshay Oberoi for his mystery thriller, "Gaslight." It's a beautiful coincidence that my instant memory of this title takes me right back to George Cukor's "Gaslight" (1944), which was a remake of Thorold Dickinson's British thriller "Gaslight" (1940)-one of my favourite atmospheric thrillers of that time. Both the films were based on Patrick Hamilton's stage play and have a woman as the central character, whose husband wants to prove that she is mentally unstable. That's somewhat similar to what Sara Ali Khan's character is seen doing in Pavan's dark thriller. I told you, it's a beautiful coincidence. Well, there are no other similarities. Gaslight is nowhere near those foreign thrillers I mentioned, if the name has anything to do with it. It's a super dark thriller with some outdated twists and royal scandals we have been sick of seeing again and again. All Gaslight needed was one getaway to find the light, which never happened.

Meesha (Sara Ali Khan), a handicapped girl stuck in a wheelchair, receives a letter from her dada sa to come back home. Eager to reconcile with her estranged father, Meesha visits their ancient palace only to find out that he has gone missing. Rukmani (Chitrangada Singh), a lonely queen, Meesha's cousin Rana (Akshay Oberoi), and a driver named Kapil (Vikrant Massey) are looking for Dada sa, while a cop (Rahul Dev) is least bothered since his past experience taught him a lot. Meesha starts seeing hallucinations, disturbing images, and even death threats at night-all that's needed to make her believe that her father is dead. As she believes it, now the question is, "Who killed him and why?" How can Meesha find out the killer and at the same time save herself? That is all that forms the crux of Gaslight.

As I mentioned earlier, Gaslight is a dark film, so all the elements have to be dark too. From the locations, background score, and framework to even character shades, everything is dark. Does it really matter if there is nothing to entice you as a viewer? Gaslight lacks cinematic and atmospheric brilliance. Those frightening cliches are older than Ramsay Bros. Films. They just can't scare you with a black hand out of a painting in today's Conjuring-era. Pavan should have realised that as a writer. Every single twist is predictable from the start, be it about characters or the plot. The way it unfolds might please you for a moment, but the next frame takes the impact away as you become aware of factual situations. I won't spoil anything, but how can you not expect people to assume a love story so easily? It's too common nowadays, and yet you make it look like a big suspense. Gaslight is full of outdated theories, and that's what has caused it to remain as dim as a thriller. We, as viewers in 2023, definitely deserve smart writing, no?

Sara Ali Khan's attempt at acting-oriented roles must have made her fans happy, especially after Atrangi Re. Sara is good again, but somehow she couldn't throw that Sara out of her while playing Meesha. In a couple of scenes, her dialogue delivery reminds you of her previous roles in Atrangi Re and Love Aaj Kal. Something just reconnects. Don't know why? Expressions or tone of voice, maybe. If Sara can overcome that in the next film (depending on whether the films have similar scenes), then I guess viewers would be able to see a new Sara. Vikrant Massey is now getting typecast, I believe. He needs to break the statue and mould something new. Gaslight took him back to typical roles, and I don't really see why he had to portray Kapil so non-cofiguratively. Chitrangda is back in the same old zone of "Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster," something that a few people call Femme Fatale. A royal scandle and femme fatale in 2023, seriously? How far behind are we lagging really? The supporting roles of Rahul Dev and Akshay Oberoi hardly have anything to offer.

Since it's an OTT product, I should say the theme went wrong. If you are making a dark toned thriller with a major chunk shown at night and scaring audiences with noises and frightening graphics, then the small screen is definitely not your medium. Actually, some scenes are shot so well that you demand a big screen viewing for them. The camerawork is decent, the background score is okay, and the editing is on par. Gaslight has a moderate budget, and the production design is pretty good considering that. However, the visual effects could have been better. Pavan has delivered a couple of watchable thrillers like "Ragini MMS" and "Darr @ The Mall." With Phobia being his work and Phone Bhoot being a mediocre attempt, Gaslight is surely a letdown. Or was it because of the genre? It's a mystery thriller, so if you don't get the thrill and mystery right, the entire game is over. I guess better writing would have helped. More than in direction, Pavan failed as a writer. Gaslight lost itself in darkness so much that it just couldn't find light at all.

Full of immense suspense and plot twists. One of the masterpiece of Bollywood for sure. Hats off to actors as well...Undoubtedly, this is the new era of bollywood industry. All the others are done and dusted. Film-making at its best. Writers, director and screenplay guys are the true champions. This movie is to be considered a milestone to Bollywood entertainment. It is the first movie I have watched , already a brilliant actor, these actors with the support of amazing direction have made this movie a roller coaster ride of entertainment thriller comedy which can satisfy the hunger of moviegoers.

The story is so gripping that you will not wish to leave theatre even in Interval. UNPREDICTABLE PLOT + GRIPPING STORY + OUTSTANDING ACTING + DARK HUMOR. Don't forget to watch this masterpiece in theatre , otherwise you will miss the audience reactions and claps on each and every twists. This film will be remembered for decades to come. If there's one thing I absolutely love about movies, whether hollywood or bollywood, is the sheer originalit greatest plot granite story y of a movie. After watching numerous bollywood movies that were hollywood rip-offs, I was absolutely amazed to see such a movie.

Viewers gaslighted.
iimraann1 April 2023
I had hopes for this movie but the story seemed to be written just so Sara can act in a movie. There are just a couple of things in that movie which were good ideas, like the last killing. Overall it is 'not a good mystery' and it does not make any logical sense when things are revealed. As a viewer it seems like you are forced to admire the heroine when the truth comes out which actually feels like bad writing as it is so on the face and isn't done subtly at all. Overall, it feels quite lazily made and doesn't even justify the title. Actually the lantern seemed to be not even a gas one, may be it was electric, but that feels quite deceiving and pretentious then, like the entire movie.

Good movie
ashiwaryarhah5 April 2023
The real peculiarity of the film is the way the story seems in one way and then almost completely changes when you see the second part and for me this is a very beautiful thing and made really well and also this two part storytelling device manages also very good at entertaining the viewer without boring him or making the twists and turns seem repetitive... I didn't expect much from this movie but take a chance on it. It'll take you by surprise and keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the movie! Easily underrated.i like it very much I highly recommend that to all must watch this movie..

The acting was excellent, and the plot maintained my interest throughout. This film should be seen by everyone interested in a fantastic tale of vengeance with numerous unexpected twists. It's an exciting voyage that won't let you down! I admired that suspense and tension were generated not by cheap shock value but by expertly planned passages and a quick pace. Additionally, the cinematography was pretty excellent in achieving absolute immersion...There were a few hiccups for people with strong views , but the journey was mostly uneventful.

One of the most predictable and Boring thrillers
rahulsanjay2331 March 2023
The movie is a slow paced bore fest. It's predictable and irritating and all actors have done a horrible job. All of them.

Vikrant Massey is the worst , Akshay Oberoi a close second.

Both actresses have horrible roles and they have done justice to it by doing full time overacting.

The most to blame is the director Pawan, who has done a horrible job at directing. He has got popular actors but he has used them horribly. This is like a 90s horror film. It's one of the worst thrillers.

Sara has to be careful while selecting movies, else she will end up being a supporting actress in coming days.

Chitrangada is good.rest everything is mediocre.skip it no need to watch.even saif asked sara to take acting class after watching the movie....set is good why Rahul dev is there don't know. Skip the movie no need to watch ....like ayushman and Rajkumar Rao , vikrant Massey is also doing propoganda driven movies now a days His acting is same almost In all his shows and movies.

He needs to add some variations in his acting..

Its the best mystery movie ! You should watch it with some attention , it got some parts that are like a jigsaw puzzle when you put that together your mind goes BOOM! , at the end you got the greatest crime / thriller movie...He wrote with such realism, crafting such tense, empathetic, and surreal moments. I found myself sympathizing with each character; caring about each and everyone of them deeply. I cried with the characters. I felt their anger. I felt everything. The audience was a part of the story.

Below average with high ratings
rehmankhilji1 May 2023
Another Bollywood below average, without anything to offer, poor acting based movie, with high fake reviews over IMDB.

First of all, Sara Ali Khan, agreed that you are from a background filled with actors (with note that your father hit the main light after years of B grade movies) but you really need to kill that one single face expression acting.

It is a murder mystery but with a fail attempt to create some horror, the problem is the director once again failed to get the basics of horror and thriller wrong. Here is a note for director, wanna show something super natural, watch Durgamati or Bhoolbhuliya, though one mystery and the other is comedy based, but the element of horror was there, making the viewers believe elsewhere. Pavan Kirpalani has some serious bad movies under the belt and this surely makes one of the most worst.

Cut short, a stupid, ridiculous, unnecessary made in dark, so called horror movie, with zero acting by all actors, with nothing to offer. A complete waste of time.

This caught me off guard and has a really fantastic spin. Creeped me out in places but this flick is a good thriller. Well connected once the twist presents itself. Lovely work. And it's not cheesy. Certainly a particular film that tells the same story from two points of view that collimate in a very beautiful and truly unexpected ending. The story is very particular and divided into several easily recognizable acts that are repeated for both visions of the story. What a fantastic thriller. The atmosphere it conjures endures the entire film. Stories interweave, characters are three dimensional, the tension is maintained throughout. Such a good Friday night film. Not only was the story line gripping and excellently put together but the production and camera work was brilliant. The score added a chilling feel that ca.
