Facebook is approaching the biggest players in the streaming space about including their services on its upcoming connected device, which lets users make video calls from TVs.

The social network has approached Disney, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and HBO (and, noticeably, not YouTube) about making their streamed content accessible through the device, which is codenamed ‘Catalina,’ The Information reports. Catalina, which is set to debut this fall, apparently uses similar technology to Facebook’s Portal. That device, a sort of lo-fi, countertop-dwelling version of an iPad, is primarily designed for making video calls and listening to music.

Agents of Shield has always had a solid grip on well-paced storytelling, and season 6 is shaping up to be an adventure that will keep us guessing but never floundering. In “Window of Opportunity,” we certainly get more details about the dimension hoppers and their mission, but while we still hunger for more, it’s clear we’re only going to be fed enough to keep our appetites whetted. And while Fitz’s situation becomes clearer quite quickly, his story is just beginning as well. Even Mack’s investigation leaves us unwilling to blink for fear of missing a key bit of insight, even as the show makes time for moments of emotion and introspection.

Valve Software is notorious for never following up on their most beloved franchises. It’s been years since we had a new Half-Life, Portal or Left 4 Dead, and there are no signs of them returning anytime soon. All of which makes the appearance of what certainly looks like a trailer for Left 4 Dead 3 worthy of some excitement. The preview, which popped up on a random YouTube account earlier today and has caused a bit of commotion in the community, can be seen up above.

Of course, the big question is whether this is a genuine leak from Valve or not. At the moment, we can’t say for sure either way, but let’s start with the positives. It’s certainly a good-looking trailer, showing a great grasp of atmosphere, lighting, modeling and materials rendering. The gore we see is almost gruesomely wet and detailed, and the environmental design is worthy of Valve.

One of Valve's most notable writers has apparently returned to the company.

Erik Wolpaw, has seemingly returned to Valve after apparently having left the company in 2017 to work on Psychonauts 2. 

The discussion surrounding Wolpaw's return began when Reddit user Trenchman noticed that Wolpaw's name appears in the credits for Artifact (Valve's recently released Ccg title based on Dota 2). Given that there had been no formal announcement of Wolpaw's return to the company at that point, or even vague hints, his inclusion in the game's credits struck many as being odd. 

At the time, there was some discussion regarding whether or not Wolpaw had perhaps worked on Artifact in some capacity during his time with Valve. However, Reddit user Trenchman actually reached out to Gabe Newell's Valve email address and was informed that Wolpaw had indeed returned to Valve. Trenchman has posted screens of the email...

Facebook reportedly is developing a television set-top box equipped with a camera, that would allow for video calling as well as streaming, according to Cheddar TV.

The device, code-named Ripley, would position Facebook to compete with its Silicon Valley rivals in a bid for the living room. It would harness the same technology incorporated in Facebook’s newly launched Portal video chat device.

Earlier this month, the social network unveiled Portal and Portal+, two video chat devices designed to make you feel like you and your friends are hanging out in the same room. These devices are built on Facebook Messenger and Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant, and use artificial intelligence to guide the camera — panning, zooming and reframing the shot as the user walks around freely.

This new TV device would incorporate these same video features, and also allow users to stream entertainment content — likely, videos from Facebook Watch.

“It never seemed quite right to me.” John Kahrs, the animator and director best known for his Academy Award-winning short film “Paperman,” always felt that something was off when he saw the ocean depicted in Hollywood movies. “My dad built a few sailboats,” he recently recalled in an interview with Variety. “I have a bit of a boating background.” And what he saw on the big screen just didn’t feel right. Too quiet. Too stormy. Too extreme. Not the waters he knew.

This week, Kahrs is showing off his own take on the ocean in a new short film that’s getting its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. “Age of Sail” is the latest virtual reality short film coming out of Google’s Spotlight Stories unit, and in many ways, the 12-minute short one of the most ambitious projects the search giant’s immersive storytelling unit has worked on to date.

Former Valve writer Jay Pinkerton has returned to the company in an undisclosed role a year after he left, according to PC Gamer.

Reddit user OWLverlord spotted Pinkerton’s name listed on Valve’s staff page in the “Other Experts” category on Sunday. Pinkerton is perhaps best known for co-writing “Portal 2” with former Valve scribe Erik Wolpaw. He also reportedly worked on the “Team Fortress 2” comics and the “Left 4 Dead” series.

Pinkerton was one of several high-profile departures from Valve in recent years. Wolpaw left the developer in February 2017 and is now reportedly working on “Psychonauts 2” with Double Fine Productions. Another writer, Chet Faliszek, left in May 2017. His credits include two “Half-Life” episodes, the “Portal” series, and the “Left 4 Dead” series. He’s now working on a new project with Bossa Studios. “Half-Life” writer Marc Laidlaw left Valve in 2016 after 18 years because he wanted to go back to writing original stories.

Comedians Casper Kelly and Nick Gibbons have a way of twisting popular culture into a nightmare version of itself for the express purpose of making you laugh uncomfortably. It’s been four years since the duo’s “Too Many Cooks” had people convincing friends to “just watch until the end.”

Their latest, “Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough” does for video games what “Too Many Cooks” did for 80s sitcom nostalgia. It begins with a mundane, stereotypical frat boy streamer taking players through the final boss fight of the fictional game, “Final Deployment 4.” From there, it spins rapidly out of control for nearly twice the length of 2014’s “Too Many Cooks, ”delivering commentary dipped in existentialism.

Kelly and Gibbons are no strangers to gaming. Gibbons is a diehard PlayStation 4 fan, having just finished the new “God of War.” He cites “Uncharted” and “The Last of Us” as two of his favorite games.

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams’ production company, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and Tencent have joined forces to launch a video game development division at Bad Robot.

Bad Robot Games will be headed up by Dave Baranoff, who since 2006 has been leading Bad Robot’s games and interactive content creation. The division will work with traditional game developers to create large and indie original games for mobile, PC, and console, according to the press release. The “strategic relationship” affords Tencent the commercial rights to distribute all of the games in Asia and lists Wbie as a “synergistic minority investor.”

Terms of the agreement, beyond that, were not disclosed.

Valve Corporation, the company behind gaming store and platform Steam as well as franchises as diverse as “Portal,” “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,” and “Half-Life,” is now also home to “Firewatch” developer Campo Santo, according to a blog post on Campo Santo’s official site this weekend.

“The twelve of us at Campo Santo have agreed to join Valve, where we will maintain our jobs as video game developers and continue production on our current project, ‘In the Valley of Gods,'” according to the Saturday evening post. The group goes on to write that they found in Valve a company that shares their values and that the deal is an obvious match.

Video game movies. Oh, video game movies. This is one nut Hollywood has tried, and consistently failed, to crack for decades. Last year seemed to be the year they could finally get it right. With Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed approaching with their releases, the future for the genre of films seemed optimistic. Warcraft hit theaters, and while it did perform pretty well overseas, it largely failed here in the U.S. On a critical level, the movie itself left a lot to be desired. Much like the master illusionist on which the feature film is based, Lionsgate’s Harry Houdini movie has been a difficult butterfly to pin. Through time, we’ve seen the likes of Johnny Depp and director Dean Parisot come attached to the project, only for plans to unravel before any tangible progress could be made.

But the show must go on, with Deadline reporting that Dan Trachtenberg has entered talks to helm the Houdini pic, one to be based on The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. Fans of the cult video games “Portal” and “Half-Life,” developed by Valve, can now rest assure knowing that their promised big screen adaptations are still in the works, thanks to J.J. Abrams. While no big announcements have yet been made about the movies, the “Star Works” helmer teased that the films are “still very much in development” and that an announcement about the “Portal” movie may be made soon.

“We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a ‘Portal’ announcement fairly soon”, Abrams told IGN at the “Westworld” red carpet.

Black Mirror is a British anthology series that's made quite a splash. In the vein of, say, like The Twilight Zone, each episode takes place in some odd, speculative science-fiction settings. The series only lasted on the British airwaves for two seasons, or seven episodes, but last year was picked up by Netflix for twelve more episodes.

Back in January, many fans were surprised to see the first trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, attached to prints of Paramount's 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, since it was the first we've heard this title. While the title was certainly new, the project itself was not, having gone into development under titles such as Valencia and The Cellar. Now that the movie opened in theaters this weekend, taking in an impressive $25.2 million, new details have surfaced from The Film Stage regarding the original ending. There will be Spoilers below, so if you haven't seen 10 Cloverfield Lane yet, read on at your own risk.

Shortly after the trailer debuted in January, a new report detailed how this film transformed from Valencia and The Cellar to 10 Cloverfield Lane. The project was put into development several years ago under the Paramount Insurge banner, a specialty division for micro-budget projects that cost under $5 million.

J.J. Abrams is a creator presiding over many projects. Late last year, the director was able to juggle Star Wars: The Force Awakens and producing duties on this month’s claustrophobic thriller, 10 Cloverfield Lane. But when it comes to the dormant Portal and Half-Life films, don’t expect either project to emerge out of left-field bearing its own trailer in the vein of Dan Trachtenberg’s directorial debut.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Abrams offered a brief status report on each video game adaptation, revealing that both projects are still very much in the early stages.

“Not yet, but they’re in development,” he said. “We’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories, but nothing that would be an exciting update.”

First announced all the way back at Dice 2013, there’s been nary a mention of potential directors or casting news for either Portal or Half-Life.

Back in 2013 J.J. Abrams announced that he was developing feature film adaptations of the video game franchise's Portal and Half-Life. Bad Robot and Valve are teaming up to make these films happen, but there’s been no information on the projects since that announcement at the D.I.C.E. Conference that year. 10 Cloverfield Lane hit big in the Us over the weekend, and it's arriving in UK cinemas at the end of this week. Producer Jj Abrams was doing press to promote the movie last week, and in a conversation with IGN, he's given a brief update as to the status of a couple of other projects he's involved with. Specifically, the videogame adaptations Half-Life and Portal. He's involved with both in a producer capacity.

Both have been mooted for a leap to the movies for some time, but nothing's been heard of either project for a good while now. Unsurprisingly, many assumed the films had been swallowed up in development hell.

Not so, though. As Abrams has now revealed to IGN, "they’re in development, and we’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories.

It's been a long while since we've heard anything about the video game adaptations Portal and Half-Life. Neither movie has a release date, but according to producer J.J. Abrams, both movies are still happening. Though how far off into the future they may be has not been determined. The projects are set up as a joint venture between J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Valve, the company behind the two games.

J.J. Abrams has been out promoting his latest project 10 Cloverfield Lane, which he also produces. He caught up with IGN, who asked about the two video game movies. While the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director didn't have a very detailed update, he did have this to say.

It might not be a direct Cloverfield sequel, but 10 Cloverfield Lane is a thumping good night out at the movies...

Arriving fully formed out of the mystery box, to the surprise and (mostly) delight of people everywhere, comes 10 Cloverfield Lane, a title which can’t help but give you certain expectations about a movie.

So, first things first. Is it a sequel to giant monster film Cloverfield? Yes and no. It definitely fits into that universe, but we’re not seeing monster attack part two. 10 Cloverfield Lane has been shrouded in secrecy. Produced by Paramount and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, the details of the film have been carefully guarded. The full trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane was released just two months before it opens this Friday. Nothing specific about the plot has leaked; just that it is a sequel of sorts to that hit monster movie from 2008, Cloverfield.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Michelle, a young woman who wakes up after a car accident in a survival bunker. Disoriented and terrified, her captor or possibly savior, is Howard (John Goodman). He tells her that they have survived an apocalypse. Michelle's also surprised to find another occupant, Emit (John Gallagher Jr). That's all you really need to know before seeing the film. J.J. Abrams loves his secrets. Be it for "Super 8," "Star Trek Into Darkness," or "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," he's a filmmaker that loves the medium in the purest way possible. Well it turns out that the director/producer's production company has kept a film quite secret, and that film has now been revealed as "10 Cloverfield Lane" (It was previously being referred to as "Valencia").

In anticipation for Valve’s latest line of Steam hardware (Steam Machine and Steam Controller), video game stores across the Us, Canada and the UK will have a dedicated section later on this year. According to a report on PC Gamer, stores such as GameStop, Game and Eb Games will be making shelving space ready for the launch of the new Valve console and accessories.

Valve CEO, Gabe Newell, said that “[c]reating a ‘store within a store’ across North America and the UK is a significant win for getting the first generation of Steam Hardware products into gamers’ hands.”

The new hardware and controller are set for release on November 10th, 2015 with the aforementioned retailers being the exclusive bricks ‘n’ mortar game stores to purchase the hardware from. There is also a limited preorder offer where gamers who purchase any of the hardware will receive a free copy of Portal and/or Rocket League.

Comedian Patton Oswalt served as host to the more than 1000 guests gathered at the Beverly Hilton to celebrate VFX talent in 23 awards categories.

Big Hero 6 was the big winner of the evening garnering five awards. The teams from Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (feature film), Game of Thrones (broadcast) and Sse (commercial) led the wins in their respective categories, taking home three awards each.

Zoe Saldana made a crowd-pleasing presentation to her Star Trek: Into Darkness director, award-winning writer-director-producer J.J. Abrams, recipient of the Ves Visionary Award.

The Visual Effects Society has announced the nominations for the 13th Annual Ves awards "the prestigious yearly celebration that recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials and video games and the VFX supervisors, VFX producers and hands-on-the-keys artists who bring this work to life."

Earlier this month marked the 10-year anniversary of arguably the greatest first-person shooter ever made, Half-Life 2. Valve’s insanely anticipated game had endured ridiculous delays (in large part due to much of the game’s code being leaked online), but the final product was without question completely worth the wait, totally outdoing the original game and delivering a shooter that has long endured ever since.

So, what better time to look back at the history of the Half-Life franchise and all the awesome things it has given birth to? From the best missions and moments throughout the two main games and four expansions to the other tangential spin-offs they led to (but not Portal, because it’s just a little too different), this list will be examining what has made Valve’s flagship series such a mainstay of the genre.

John Goodman is in talks to star in the Paramount Insurge and Bad Robot thriller Valencia, which J.J. Abrams is producing.

We first reported on the project back in April, when Dan Trachtenberg signed on to make his directorial debut. The story centers on a teenage girl who wakes up in a creepy underground cellar, where she is told by her eerie caretaker (John Goodman) that a nuclear attack has killed off all life on the surface.

Daniel Casey rewrote the script from the original draft by Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken. Paramount Insurge is eyeing a $5 million budget for the thriller, although no production schedule was given.

John Goodman most recently voiced one of the robots in disguise in Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction, and he also recently starred in The Monuments Men. He will next be seen in The Gambler.

Commercial and short film director Dan Trachtenberg has had a few feature projects lined up over the last couple of years. One was an adaptation of Y The Last Man, but there's been no real movement on any of those projects. It looks like Trachtenberg's first feature film will end up being a low budget thriller called Valencia that is being produced by Bad Robot and J.J. Abrams. 

According to The Wrap, "the majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar, home to a teenage girl and a caretaker. The girl woke up in the cellar after a car accident, at which point her eerie companion tells her a nuclear attack has devastated society. The girl still hopes to escape."

A Bad Robot and Valve Software team-up is a big deal, a potentially monumental collaboration of chocolate/peanut butter proportions. J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell are both natural storytellers (Newell’s getting a BAFTA fellowship, for God’s sake) – and they’ve both been pushing their respective mediums forward for a long time now. Each studio has a lot to gain from working with the other.

I’m not sure what Abrams can bring to Valve’s table – but if we’re ever going to get a Half-Life movie that delivers on the franchise’s potential, it’s going to come from J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot. Abrams might not be your first choice to direct or produce a Half-Life movie, but you know what I say?...
