You expect a film premiere party for a documentary titled "Hey Bartender" to serve great drinks -- and in that department the Manhattan bash ahead of its theatrical bow today didn't disappoint. At the Experimental Cocktail Club on the Lower East Side, a crew of super savvy bartenders served up cocktails that had guests going back for seconds and from the looks of it, thirds, fourths and more. The film itself, out in select theaters and VOD today, is director Douglas Tirola's take on what the movie dubs "the cocktail revolution." To track it he follows several bartenders -- including an injured Marine who turns to bartending and a man who leaves his white-collar job to buy the corner bar in his hometown -- as they navigate the ups and downs of a very flavorful industry. With the weekend upon us, what better time to experiment by attempting to...

With most diners having previous interacting with bartenders, and movie and television audiences being bombarded by images of bars from past films and shows, many people feel they possess a preconceived notion of who bartenders are. But in the new documentary ‘Hey Bartender,’ director Douglas Tirola aims to uncover what drives an individual to become a bartender, what their job technically entails and how they really fit into communities. The film sets out to also show bartenders’ dreams and aspirations, and create the understanding that having a working-class job such as bartending shouldn’t be something to be ashamed about. ‘Hey Bartender’ follows several bartenders working around the world, who try [ Read More ]

Watching the documentary Hey Bartender is like spending a night at a good bar: It's fun, easygoing, and it lasts just a little longer than it should. And the conversation, while delightful in the moment, often seems banal the next morning. It's clear that director Douglas Tirola is passionate about cocktails and the art of tending bar, and that he's as charming as the members of the hospitality industry he's convinced to tell their stories on camera. The bartenders themselves are a motley crowd, most of whom ended up in the service industry by accident—or without intending to stay. These ex-actors and military veterans have a dogged energy for performance, and are often surprised by their enthusiasm for their own profession, especially when the reasoning voices of less-tha...

Booze! It may not be quite as good a come-on as Sex! but there’s also a double shot of sexiness in “Hey Bartender,” which despite its shot-and-beer title is about the fine art of mixology, a.k.a. the alchemical mixing of alcoholic beverages (with names like Weep No More, the Minnehaha and the always fashionable Bronx, which is, Fyi, a perfect martini with orange juice). Is liquor cinematic? Hell, it can make anything cinematic, including the floor of your car, but writer/director Douglas Tirola aims considerably higher than that in a doc that blends one part character study, two parts high style, and a dash of history about the American cocktail. The tragedy of Prohibition, we learn through Tirola’s film, is what caused a rather lofty pursuit to become a déclassé occupation, but that, of course, has changed. One of Tirola’s human assets is Dale DeGroff,...

"The culture of drink endures because it offers so many rewards ... above all the elusive promise of friendship and love" -- Pete Hamill, A Drinking Life: A Memoir
The documentary Hey Bartender opens with this fitting introduction into the world of cocktails. The story introduces us to several characters in this lively and engaging film from director Douglas Tirola (All In: The Poker Movie). We are introduced first to Dunville's owner Steve Carpentieri, who is struggling to keep his small business alive in Westport, Connecticut. Cheap beer flows at this hole-in-the-wall where everyone does know your name, but fancy cocktails don't cross the bar here. Carpentieri ponders whether to throw in the towel after almost 20 years in the business.
On the other end of the spectrum is Steve Schneider, a young man trying to advance in the ranks at Employees Only (Eo), one of the most prestigious bars in New York City.

Film on Tap is a column about the many ways that beer (or sometimes booze) and cinema intersect in Austin.
The SXSW Film Festival and Conference is less than a month away, and the lineup includes a couple of alcohol-related movies worth seeing. Unfortunately the documentary Crafting a Nation, which features several local breweries, wasn't accepted based on their rough-cut submittal, but they are optimistic that the improved final cut will screen in Austin soon.
Joe Swanberg (Hannah Takes The Stairs) will premiere Drinking Buddies, a tale of two co-workers in a Chicago brewery who may be better suited for one another than their current partners. Will love blossom at the brewery, when beer is a factor?
