Too much conspiracy
cooper_gareth8 March 2023
In its attempt to introduce new angles and material not seen before it has focused far too much on conspiracy (painted as seemingly viable alternatives to the current evidence-based versions available). This mystery-tragedy has left hundreds of people without their loved ones and they deserve more than conspiracy and speculation. This series provided a platform for rabbit holes, and gave far too little airtime to the individuals providing scientific and credible information and insights into this missing aircraft. It's hard to see what the point of this docu-series is, aside from trying to introduce new, fresh narratives at any cost.

Conspiracy theory heaven
norwell-services8 March 2023
Three episodes, three feasible conspiracy theories with all the underlying evidence exposed ... the third one is the best and least believable ... or is it?

This docudrama takes you through a timeline from the first instance MH370 being missed to the eventual dropping of the search in the South Indian Ocean.

There are heartbreaking interviews with family member of the missing plus team members of the search teams. All of which are searching for an answer to the disappearance of loved ones. Sometimes these are angry but all agree that they're not being told the truth.

But is the truth out there?

I enjoyed it was a good summary of what happened
brenzbrenz3 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So many negative reviews, but I guess I can understand why. But for me I found it interesting the whole story all put together from beginning to end. Sure lots of conspiracy theories but really that's all we got when there has been no collusion all these years. I have always wondered over the years if there was any development in the search for MH370 and seems like it's finished and a final report has been written and it will remain a mystery. Except for the French who I hope will continue to investigate. The one thing that left me puzzled was the images found in the ocean by Cyndi. Why wasn't that ever investigated? It seemed like actual fact rather than conspiracy. But guessing since that was the first place they checked was where the plane went off the radar no point checking again? As I watched the series I was hoping in the end someone else would have gone and checked that location, but looks like Cyndi's findings will remain a mystery? I wonder if anyone will take a journey into the middle of the sea someday to find out? 😕

Blah, blah, blah

Warning: Spoilers
Talking heads! Conspiracy theories! What a load of garbage.

This is a "documentary" at its worst. And, OF COURSE, it's hitting #1 in the Netflix ratings.

The majority of people interviewed, have personal agendas, and the desire to be in front of the camera. It comes across as "crazy town."

Um, yeah. America shot a civilian plane down, because of the cargo. Seriously?

An "unsolved mystery" brings out the wannabes. And Netflix giving a pulpit to these psychos is just sad.

Nothing new is learned from this thing. It's just insane supposition. Appealing to the lowest common denominator. Congrats, Netflix, you've reached a new low.

What were some people expecting?
Kingslaay30 April 2023
I remember when MH370 went missing and the world going into a frenzy over what happened. I agreed with so many who said how could a Boeing Jet in todays world just disappear. With all the technology and satellites we have today, how could a plane on the grid, suddenly fall off the grid?

And that's what the documentary focused on, the unexplainable and all the conspiracy theories that unfolded. Now to be clear, the documentary does not endorse any theory. It presents all the theories, some bizarre ones, and the main personalities and authorities involved. If people wanted the solution as to what happened to the plane, they need to get their head checked. No one knows for sure what happened. The plane and all those people disappeared and it has been years. Speculation and yes some over the top theories is all we have. If you are frustrated about not having any concrete evidence, imagine how the families feel. I will stress that again, there is no concrete evidence to arrive at a credible theory or explanation. So not sure what some people expected with this mini-series.

Down another rabbit hole ...
keikoyoshikawa19 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Two theories are proposed in this short series: 1) the Americans were somehow involved and knew exactly what happened, and 2) the Russians hijacked the plane and killed everyone onboard. Both are fanciful and lack any convincing evidence.

For the grieving father Ghislaine Wattrelos, I can understand why he would grasp at any straw, any story that is fed to him. He lost his wife and only two young children. The man is devastated, without knowing why, and so any explanation is tempting.

For the aviation journalist Jeff Wise, his hypothesis is so far-fetch as to be comical. He evens admits that he would be ridiculed for publicly espousing his claims. I don't think he's doing it maliciously; but a great mystery can bring out strange behaviors.

And so we end up with a bizarre situation in which a self-proclaimed adventurer Blaine Gibson becomes the only person to find most of the debris supposedly from MH370. Is he dishonest? No idea. Anything is possible at this point, I feel.

This leads us to the third and last hypothesis. I won't spoil it here. But it's a doozy.

Netflix has given us another entertaining documentary if nothing else. I don't know what happened to MH370, but I'm pretty sure all those passengers are dead. RIP.

Theory documentary
hazard1118 March 2023
The plane hasn't been found so really there's no closure in this show. This documentary presents three theories that circulated as to what happened. How many there are who knows. Not too in-depth but good enough if you're into that. But if you're looking for answers more than questions then no this isn't it. You'd end up asking and questioning after watching.

IF you're new to the MH370 news I think this documentary is a good place as any to start. They went about some of the families and the news reports so you do get the important information.

Overall nothing of significant substance. I rated it 6 because it was easy to watch. Wish they added more of the families to focus on honoring their loved ones but perhaps they declined to participate.

Warning: some flashing effects in their editing.

Sounds like a discussion one would have on weed!
apooos13 March 2023
So much significance is given to theories that make no sense! Instead of interviewing the key people who could provide a plausible explanation, netflix chose to make this docuseries a movie for eyeballs.

It would have been better if they would have just recreated a scene based on actual data.

I was hoping to get better insights or at least an unbiased documentary but it provides neither.

I don't know why they never mentioned in the documentary that some of the personal belongings of the people were also found in Madagascar (make it more believable that the plane actually went down in Southern Indian ocean, agreeing with the data).

This is just a disappointingly long documentary that is like my uncle's stories; they lead to nothing!

Another documentary hijacked by conspiracy crap
Zedyeti13 March 2023
I swear 9 out of 10 documentaries on Netflix follow the basic outline of:

1. Being way too long and could really be condensed into 90-120 min.

2. Start out ok but eventually drift into the unknown so they theorize what may have happened.

3. By the 3rd episode the conspiracy theories take precedence to what the actual documentary is about.

This story is a sad incident and it sucks that this documentary took this classic Netflix turn and got hijacked by that dude that talked way too much. Seriously, did they run out of people to interview? Instead you gave most of the screen time to the guy that suggested Russians hatched some elaborate scheme to bury a Russian invasion from the media? Wtf! Haha. I'm sorry but I really wanted to see this as the real story was odd but this was bad all around.

How to ruin a great production
oleknutli12 March 2023
I was so excited for this documentary to air. Finally someone was going to demystify what happened to MH370, or give us more details about it. Present the facts and dive into the investigation in a viewer friendly fashion.

Let us get to know the families and the people involved in the investigation and the search operation.

It starts off pretty good, but as it progresses it goes down a rabbit hole of cringe conspiracy theories, completely detached from reality. It was so disappointing that Netflix spent so much time on this, rather than exploring the true details of what happened. I have no problem going into uncertain theories, but the theories should at least line up with the evidence we know is true.

When the "aviation journalist" Jeff goes off the rails with his Russia theory, the documentary leaves planet earth and goes into Qanon mode, topping it off with the French "journalist".

It's a great production, and therefore it is such a wasted opportunity. There are so many sane and interesting angles they could have explored, but they decided to go for the conspiracies, giving the microphone to lunatics rather than to shine light on the true story.

Feels Like I Just Spent 3 Hours on Twitter
Jude77149 March 2023
Horrible docuseries. Thank God Mike Exner agreed to participate and save it from devolving into a complete conspiracy theory fest. Mark Dickinson of Inmarsat and Pete Foley also lent sanity to the series, albeit for only the few seconds of interview time Netflix thought it appropriate to include. Even Blaine Gibson (who I admittedly assumed would be one of the nuttier personalities) was one of the few more rational voices.

I feel for these families. Really, I do. But it's clear that some of them are struggling so much with their grief and with not having answers that they're buying into far-fetched theories they would likely never have entertained 15 years ago. I hope they're given closure one day but the idea that this was some global conspiracy involving no less than 3 major countries to take down your average commercial flight is not going to give it to them. And shame on The Intercept's de Changy who's profiting like a MFer off both this tragedy and the heartbreak of the victims' families.

I agree we need answers but none of the ridiculous conspiracies posited in this docuseries is a plausible explanation.

I would have much preferred a FACTUAL docuseries focusing on the accident itself, the investigation that followed, and the 239 souls lost. I mean, you could have just interviewed Mike Exner, Mark Dickinson, and Pete Foley. Hell, you had them right there. I would have loved to hear their theories about what happened.

Believe it or not somethings not right ?
imknight14 April 2023
I watched this series and read these negative reviews with many sighting conspiracy theories yet telling their own . Every theory is going to be a conspiracy.theory because nothing has ever been found , Even the narrative that it went down in the Indian Ocean is only a theory because there is no real proof . Some theories make sense because there is so much not being told . 2 Malaysian 777s gone within 4 months . One shot down and the other disappears ? Now theres a conspiracy right there ?? Wreckage washes ashore exactly where some guy was told to look where no other person living there found anything and finds some pieces of a plane yet no personal items just a few plane parts ?? I could go on but you get my meaning that many things dont add up and if anything , ,whether they are extreme or not , there is absolutly no wreckage that has been substansiated . So its worth watching and make up your own mind to what you think but in my book there is definetly some sort of cover up involved.

Netflix ruins another great documentary concept
ChRiS-8039 March 2023
I was hanging for this doco then realised it was coming from the house of excess - Netflix.

There wasn't a requirement for 3 hours of episodes for what should have been a 90-120 min at best doco. A lot of padding, excess and repetitive storytelling, it goes a bit nowhere and is at times boring.

Then they have just a few families talking, if it's going to drag on perhaps more diverse interviews. A lot of shots of Kuala Lumpur over and over.

It's all just filler.

By half way in episode 1, I had no idea what storytelling narrative they were going with. And it never felt focused.

Again lots of shots of Malaysia which have *nothing* to do with this documentary.

Assuming they couldn't get a lot of footage from the real disappearance.

Could have been worse, at least we didn't have actors pretending to be "people" like they weirdly do in kther Netflix docos.

Of all the streamers, Netflix do documentaries the absolute worse.

Disappointing!

Very good first episode, the rest is atrocious.
Sleepin_Dragon28 April 2023
On March 8th 2014, Flight number 370 takes off from Malaysia, but disappears from the radar, 239 people on board vanished.

Episode one had me absolutely captivated, it was so moving, hearing from the loved ones of those missing people, very moving, a little mystery was suggested surrounding the bizarre disappearance.

Sadly, episodes 2 and 3 followed, and both were dismal, the sad, but intriguing story turns into a haven for conspiracy theories, and dare I say the words, but fanboy (and fangirl) theories, I watched in horror as this series played host to two people to have a dig at one another.

The Russians, The Chinese, those Australians, The Americans, The Pilot, nobody was safe from the theories, Finland and Nigeria fortunately didn't get blamed, they were about the only two nations that weren't.

This was very poor documentary making, you wonder who edits and signs off things like this, in this day and age, this just wasn't acceptable, the deaths are still relevant, still fresh for many, this was totally distasteful.

A few points for episode one, that was powerful, the rest was awful, over long, it didn't give voice to the relatives, it was quite frankly ridiculous.

4/10.

Not a Documentary! Warning: Spoilers
NO STARS, just disappointment.

This has been advertised as a documentary, it is not! It is random conspiracy theories woven into a barely watchable show.

The idea that a documentary should be educational and based on known facts seems to have fallen through the cracks with this offering. Some relatives of those lost who participated in this come across as "conspiracy nuts"

The whole show twists theories to the maximum and for whatever reason one person is given center stage with wild theories and absolutely no facts to back them.up.

Sorry Netflix, you have canceled better shows than this dribble.

To surmise, passing this off as a "documentary" is like passing "Blazing Saddles" off as one of the Wild West.

A plane Disappeared
krish-sarkar11 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Netflix releases a three part docuseries 'MH-370: The plane that disappeared' on the week that coincided with 8th March 2023. Perhaps a planned release to mark the event of last flight undertaken by flight MH370 which was on a scheduled international passenger flight that disappeared exactly on 8 March 2014. The plane flew from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia and was supposed to land at Beijing Capital International Airport in China. The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members vanished from radar screens less than an hour after takeoff.

The 3-part series covers examining the theories involving the pilot suicide, a hijacking story and about a cargo' with a common objective to find the plane debris. The search for the missing Boeing and its passengers became the largest, the most expensive 'search and rescue' operation in aviation history - involving multiple countries and organizations and yet till date the plane remained vanished without any physical evidence. Unfortunately, despite extensive search efforts - the plane was never found, and the fate of the passengers and crew remains unknown.

Various theories have emerged about what happened to the plane, including mechanical failure, pilot error, hijacking, or a deliberate act of sabotage. Some have suggested that the plane may have crashed into the Indian Ocean, but no definitive evidence has been found to support any specific theory.

The disappearance of MH370 remains one of the most perplexing and tragic events in modern aviation history, and the search for answers continues to this day. An interesting watch for documentary lovers.

Freedom of Speech done right
stantilling27 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm glad this was made! In the same vein as Netflix giving voices against big establishment such as Graham Hancock in Ancient Apocalypse, the series gives credit to the voice and thorough investigation of Florence, who wasn't afraid to say add up all the pieces and state that it was a US cover-up, that the FBI also tried to cover-up. And they have been known not to be trustworthy. I'm so happy we live in a day and age where they risk upsetting Americans, who will reject the theory they would ever cover up this matter or fathom the fact their elites are capable of terrible things. Do they have to spell it out? They did everything but say "IT WAS THE U. S. and then they make sure to also have a few interviewees rubbishing "conspiracy theorists" to cover their tracks, but all in all, we are getting to a point where people will start to question more of the stories they hear, and that is a good thing! Well done, Netflix for being brave.

nothing but conspiracy theories,
mendymariamKE10 March 2023
So, The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in 2014 remains one of the biggest aviation mysteries in history.

The plane vanished on March 8, 2014, with 239 passengers and crew on board while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

This Netflix documentary however is just full of conspiracy theories, blame game and nothing really solid. Also, I'm appalled by the journalism in the documentary.

That Aviation blogger really did steer the whole documentary to nowhere with his theories.

Also why did that lady not answer his dad's phone, it's ringing and the plane had already disappeared...?? Like maybe she would have picked it up quick or something?

Capt. Simon Hardy's technical explanation is the most credible I heard, although am no expert in aviation.

Not the best effort for such a huge tragedy!
chris_smir8 March 2023
I understand that film maker had to present all possible scenarios that were heard but the American journalist made the documentary looked like stupid. However, it is obvious that certain people behind the curtains, threw a lot of dust in this whole investigation (maybe even in this documentary as well), if we could say that it was indeed an investigation that was fully independent.

I have seen better executed documentaries from Netflix. For such a serious case I would expect a better outcome. I have to say that French journalist and French husband saved this documentary by presenting the most logical side of this story, even if all are in the sphere of conspiracy.

Jeff Wise - Your most hated character from any show ever
rishabanilkumar11 March 2023
Wow! The absurdity and just clear lack of sympathy for the families of the victims of this horrible tragedy is just astounding. I found Jeff Wise to be absolutely infuriating. The guy just needs to write murder mystery novels with his crazy thinking and leave actual reality for people with a sense of sanity. How the producers at Netflix found him tolerable, let alone lead pretty much most of the show is the real conspiracy. Russia anyone? Maybe trying to brain-dumb more Americans so they can eventually take over the world. In spite of all that, I really did feel for the victims of the tragedy. What they went through is absolutely horrific. May we all know what happened very soon.

Nearly a decade later, the search for the truth is still ON! [+60%]
arungeorge138 March 2023
9 years on, the mystery surrounding the fate of flight MH370 continues to irk the whole world. The 3-episode piece (spread over nearly 3 hours) tries to encapsulate what probably went down on that devastating night, delving into different kinds of theories while also closely following the official narrative. The first episode is largely factual and offers insights most of us already know. When journalists and experts in the aviation field take up the limelight, it feels like we're spending too much time on hearsays and assumptions and not really heading towards a vivid conclusion due to the lack of credible, concrete data. The third episode even covers the efforts of a modern-day Indian Jones in the supposed recovery of the plane debris, before circling back to the perspectives that matter the most here, i.e. The relatives of the passengers. Their stories prove to be the emotional crux, and it will always be shattering to acknowledge that 239 people lost their lives but we may never get to know how (or why).

Serious Investigation/Explication Sacrificed For Sensational Conspiracies
johnspringer-9544010 March 2023
The story behind the disappearance of MH370 is a tragic mystery that deserves serious and careful analysis. Alas this three-episodes series devotes most of its time and attention to crackpots who are peddling moronic "double-agents in the CIA met with the Uzbekistani navy at Roswell to recruit Bigfoot to steal the plane" conspiracy theories; and, even worse, it gives a sympathetic platform to the cynical creeps who are exploiting the families of the passengers for fame and money. These people are disgusting, particularly a French "journalist" preying on the hope and denial of a grieving father and husband.

Although the series does also briefly present more rational perspectives, it never effectively challenges the crackpots and con-artists' sophistry.

Complainers can go away. This was a great summary
anaissiller11 March 2023
This is a summary of 9 years, not a new investigation report. This documentary pieced everything together.

At some point between 2014-2023, I lost track of all the media coverage and the last thing I remember was that the pilot did it. But I didn't see all the interviews with the family members.

So what is with the complainers ????? All the points of view and media coverage were presented. Hypotheses were presented because that's all we have. If you have the plane and evidence of what happened to it, then please come forward. In the meantime, this was a great documentary because the families of the victims were also interviewed.

"MH370: The Plane That Disappeared"
rodgere30 March 2023
"MH370: The Plane That Disappeared" is a gripping and well-produced documentary that explores one of the greatest aviation mysteries of our time - the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The show does an excellent job of presenting the known facts and theories about what happened to the plane and its passengers. The interviews with experts and family members of those on board are particularly moving and add a human element to the story.

However, despite its many strengths, the show's length may be a drawback for some viewers. At times, it feels like the pacing could have been tighter and some scenes could have been trimmed to make for a more concise viewing experience. This is not to say that the show is not worth watching - far from it. But viewers should be prepared for a longer viewing experience.

Overall, I would give "MH370: The Plane That Disappeared" a 6 out of 10. It's a well-made and engaging documentary that sheds light on a tragic and mysterious event. However, its length may be a drawback for some viewers.

RUSSIA! THE PILOT!! AMERICANS!! AUSTRALIA!!! CHINA!!
helenahandbasket-9373410 March 2023
An absolute tragedy of a documentary series, led by a supposed journalist IN AVIATION.

Wise may as well be wearing a shiny, pointy tinfoil hat for his plethora of insane conspiracy theories and compatriots in Ghyslain, Dose' (Ghyslain's attorney), some TOMNOD volunteer (the group has been discredited for publishing nonsensical claims with absolutely zero evidence) who felt appointed to do this because she has 'an eye for detail) and some lunatic French 'journalist' who seem to spur each other on, chasing fringe theory after fringe theory, pointing fingers at anything that will hold still long enough to cast blame upon.

I sincerely hope every one of these idiots is sued into oblivion for defamation and slander.

I'm sorry the plan of souls was lost and these families weren't able to put their loved ones to rest; however blathering on and on with demonstrably false information pointing fingers at anyone that suits them, falling into crazy rabbit holes that lead absolutely nowhere other than to other people/countries/theories.

The white 'specks', the electronics supposedly turning off, people 'planting' debris, supposed crash site in Siberia, random AWACs (not just one BUT TWO), a guy goes on his own to help and looks for debris and finds some so he's obviously a Russian spy, then the pilot is supposedly an unhinged suicidal lunatic, then depressurization surely happened, then they've got all the answers and the government is wrong, but THEY HAVE ZERO ANSWERS, but whoops, 'we forgot to mention we are making millions selling books and making appearances' and it's painful.

Thank God for the minuscule amount of people with a lick of sense that will call these loons out and discredit their baloney. It's such a shame it took until the very end of 3 episodes to finally hear substantial voices of reason.

Save yourself the time and incredible amount of frustration and just watch about the last 20 minutes of episode three and skip the rest of you feel the need to watch this steaming pile.
