- The filmmakers behind the 2014 award-winning documentary "The Last Man on the Moon" are delighted to announce a new short-format edition with a special focus on the Apollo 17 mission, its crew and those who supported humanity's most recent journey to the lunar surface. The film now includes astronaut Gene Cernan's historic and never-before-heard words to the next people to leave their boot-prints on the Moon, which we now know as the Artemis generation.
The film was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 17 - it was on December 14, 1972 that Cernan stepped off the moon, becoming the 12th and last person to leave his own boot-prints in the lunar soil.
The film was premiered at the Space Centre Houston as part of their celebrations, and has been shown at other US educational establishments.
The film traces the story of Apollo 17 from launch, through the Moon landing and EVAs, to splash-down using rare archive and original interview footage with Gene Cernan, Chris Kraft and Gene Kranz. It includes archive footage of crew members Harrison Schmitt and Ron Evans. It ends with a sequence looking forward to Artemis and our return to the Moon. The new edition uses a gold mine of modern-day filmed material and archive not used in the original feature documentary. It has a new spectacular launch sequence, and more on the lunar EVAs [moonwalks] - including dealing with a broken fender on the rover.
The "Last Man on the Moon - Apollo 17" was directed by Mark Craig. Produced by Keith Haviland and Gareth Dodds. Executive Produced by Mark Stewart.
