Locked (2025) Movie Ending Explained: Can Eddie Survive the Trap?
Anthony Hopkins and Bill Skarsgård in Locked (2025)
“Locked” (2025), an English remake of the Argentinian film “4×4,” is an unremarkable survival cum hostage thriller that is made palatable by the central leading performances. Starring Bill Skarsgard and Anthony Hopkins and directed by David Yarovesky, the film often meanders after the intriguing premise, only to be elevated by the interesting pair of Skarsgard and Hopkins. Even as a genre film, ‘Locked’ has limited appeal and is bound to be forgotten amidst a plethora of films of its ilk.

Locked (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

A petty thief, Eddie (Bill Skarsgard), cannot afford to take his van out of the mechanic’s garage. We see him unsuccessfully phoning every number in his contact list to borrow money. Eddie is supposed to pick up his daughter, Sarah, from school. Due to the lack of a vehicle, he gets delayed. His ex-wife berates him for standing Sarah up. Knowing he will again fail to...

Bill Skarsgård and Nicholas Galitzine Board World War II Drama From 'American Primeval' Director
Image
He-Man and Nosferatu walk into a bar. No, that can’t be right, but it kind of is. Today, Deadline reported that Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe) and Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu) will star in Netflix’s upcoming film, Mosquito Bowl. The title is the first feature-length production to come from Peter Berg’s deal with the streamer, following the director’s uber-successful breakaway historical drama, American Primeval, which toppled viewership charts earlier this year. Along with directing, Berg also co-penned the adaptation with Mark L. Smith, which was first told through the New York Times bestseller, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, by Buzz Bissinger.

Berg has never been one to stay away from football, and Mosquito Bowl will be no different. The film will pick up following the harrowing attack on Pearl Harbor, which launched the United States into the middle of WWII.

Nicholas Galitzine & Bill Skarsgård To Star In Netflix’s ‘Mosquito Bowl’ From Director Peter Berg
Image
Exclusive: Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) and Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu) are set to star in Mosquito Bowl, the first new film falling under Peter Berg’s recently renewed deal with Netflix, on which we were first to report, sources tell Deadline.

Details as to the roles to be played by the two are under wraps. Based on Buzz Bissinger’s New York Times bestseller The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the film is set after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when four of America’s top college football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they play in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history – a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.

Berg penned the adaptation with Mark L. Smith. Producers...

‘Carjackers’ Prime Video Review: A Derivative French Heist Film With Decent Performances
Image
Is the “eat the rich” subgenre headed downhill, or are we, as viewers, becoming too critical of it? 2019 was probably the year when artists from all corners of the globe cried out in unison against the economic divide through their work. Hence, we got anti-classist stories like Parasite, Knives Out, Aadhaar, and more. While we were losing our minds during the Covid-19 pandemic and watching how the wealthy were using even a devastating situation like that to oppress people and widen the gap between the upper and lower classes, Squid Game arrived in 2021. And, due to the popularity of the show, it seemed like people would really get together and reject this form of discrimination and inequality. But as soon as the public started cosplaying as the characters, while streaming platforms and YouTubers organized real-life versions of the Squid Game, I guess we began diluting the essence of “eat the rich.

Bill Skarsgård’s 66% Rotten Tomatoes Psychological Thriller Opens Outside the Top 10 With Less Than $1 Million
Image
Bill Skarsgård’s new film debuted in theaters this weekend to underwhelming box office returns. Skarsgård features opposite Anthony Hopkins in Locked, the psychological thriller following a thief who breaks into a luxury SUV only to realize he’s now become a pawn in a sophisticated game. Locked debuted in roughly 971 theaters across the country this weekend and earned $924,000 at the global box office, giving it a per-theater total of under $1,000. The film failed to crack the top 10 during its first weekend in theaters, finishing at #12 behind Dog Man and Paddington in Peru but ahead of Last Breathand Mufasa: The Lion King. Locked is based on the film 4 x 4 by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, with Michael Arlen Ross writing the script and David Yarovesky directing.

Bill Skarsgård Explains the "Torturous Journey" of Filming New Anthony Hopkins Thriller 'Locked'
Image
The following article contains mild spoilers for Locked. After he rose to fame playing Pennywise in 2017's It,Bill Skarsgårdhas plied his trade playing all kinds of characters. Most of the time, you can't really tell it's him under mountains of makeup, prosthetics and the occasional CGI effect. The actor, though, excels in transformational roles, garnering a reputation for being unrecognizable. However, despite all the horror and metamorphosis he's experienced on screen, the actor himself has now revealed that none of these experiences match shooting his latest film, Locked, in which he co-stars alongside acting icon Anthony Hopkins, and which Skarsgård calls "a quite torturous journey."

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the actor recalls the experience of making Locked, in which he plays Eddie Barrish, a criminal who finds himself trying to steal the wrong car. Locked is the newest thriller by David Yarovesky (Brightburn), and it stars Skarsgård alongside Hopkins and Michael Eklund.

'Locked' Fans Need to Watch the Twisted 2016 Horror Film 'Don't Breathe'
Image
The latest pulse-pounding sensation taking the cinema by storm is the Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins-led action thrillerLocked, which features the Nosferatu star as a cocky carjacker who discovers he is in over his head after he becomes trapped in a greatly modified car belonging to an enigmatic sociopath looking to teach the thief a brutal lesson. A remake of the Argentinian film 4x4, Locked has already earned promising reviews and is leaving audiences squirming in their seats as they watch in terror as Skarsgård fights for the upper hand.

The thriller's gripping premise is reminiscent of a 2016 horror hit that also dominated the silver screen, with Fede Álvarez's deeply unnerving hit Don't Breathefocusing on a young thief and her friends who find themselves in a terrifying situation after attempting to rob a blind veteran of his secret stash, only to realize they're trapped and being hunted by the older man.

Box Office: ‘Snow White’ Saves the Day While ‘Novocaine’ Feels the Pain and ‘Mickey 17’ Looks Expendable
Image
Disney’s latest live-action remake claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend, while the rest of the competition underperformed. Despite a road to theaters drenched with controversy and delays, the Rachel Zegler-led live-action Snow White adaption premiered this weekend and hauled in $43 million at the domestic box office to pair with $44.3 million internationally for a global haul of $87.3 million. While this return certainly isn’t abysmal, it’s also not even half of the film’s whopping $209 reported production budget, and although it’s clear Disney didn’t put the same effort into marketing Snow White that it has some of its other live-action remakes, it will still need around $400 million worldwide to break even. Snow White also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and was directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man).

Snow White’s biggest competition was a couple of underperformers that barely...

‘Magazine Dreams’ Fails To Flex, ‘October 8’ A Standout With ‘Secret Mall Apartment’ – Specialty Box Office
Image
Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors is eyeing an estimated $700k weekend in 815 theaters, solid in NY, LA and a handful of urban markets but below the $1 million Deadline hears the distributor had initially been hoping for given strong engagement online with the film, which has a 91% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (81% with critics).

The opening weekend miss for what was a very buzzy Sundance title back in 2023 about a troubled but ambitious bodybuilder follows controversy around its star and comes at a tough time for indie films in general. In the months after the film premiered in Park City, Majors was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment against an ex-girlfriend.

Briarcliff’s documentary October 8 is an upside surprise with a projected $250k weekend at 113 theaters — up 7% from last weekend’s opening at 14 few theaters. AMC Lincoln Square and Century City are top grossers for the...

Bill Skarsgård Details “Solitary Experience” Of Filming ‘Locked’ In A Car: “A Quite Torturous Journey”
Image
With his latest role, Bill Skarsgård had the task of delivering a terrified and tortured performance with no scene partner.

The Locked star recently opened up about the “quite torturous journey” of playing a carjacker locked alone in a vehicle and subjected to the deadly whims of a mysterious sociopath (Anthony Hopkins) intent on teaching him the consequences of his crimes.

“This was a very solitary experience for me in terms of performing it because it’s just me and a camera for most of the movie, stuck in this f—ing car,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “So I really missed my castmates because so much of what I love about acting is dancing with a scene partner. And there’s a little bit of dancing towards the end of this with Sir Anthony Hopkins which was just for sure an incredibly cool experience.”

Skarsgård continued, “But it was awkward being alone for so long.

'Locked' Fans Would Love Colin Farrell's Twisty Thriller 'Phone Booth'
Image
The action thriller Locked, directed by David Yarovesky and starring Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins, is a survival thriller that utilizes primarily one location to sell its story of someone teaching another character about the consequences of their actions and lifestyle. Its premise immediately sparked memories of Joel Schumacher's 2002 psychological thriller Phone Booth, a film that also took its main subject, trapped him in a single location, and used another mostly unseen character to teach a lesson in how our actions can be called to the floor for judgment. Schumacher's thriller remains an underrated effort today and one that does the most with escalating high tension by utilizing limited space and top-notch performances.

Directed by Schumacher and written by Larry Cohen, Phone Booth follows a young and arrogant publicist named Stuart Shepard (Colin Farrell) who has been setting up an affair with his client Pamela McFadden (Katie Holmes...

Weekend Box Office: Snow White disappoints, Alto Knights & Ash open disastrously
Image
Disney’s live action remake of Snow White was never going to open to boffo box office. The toxic early buzz and poor tracking suggested that the Mouse House was fighting an uphill battle with this one, but given how well their live-action remakes did in the past, no one expected the film to open to less than $50 million – including us. That number was seen by some as a worst-case scenario, considering the $270 million price tag.

However, Deadline is now reporting that the movie is opening far worse than anyone expected, with a $43 million weekend, which is even less than the flop remake of Dumbo (which cost half of what Snow White did) made. Unless the box office picks up notably in the next few weeks (similar to what happened with Mufasa: The Lion King), Disney is going to lose a mint on this one, with it the second major misfire of the year,...

Bill Skarsgård Took on His Role in ‘Locked’ Because It Was the ‘Polar Opposite’ of ‘Nosferatu’
Image
Bill Skarsgård may be gaining a reputation for enjoying transformative performances with roles like Pennywise in “It” and Count Orlok in “Nosferatu,” but like any other actor, he likes mixing things up too. Keeping it simple for his most recent outing, the close-quarters thriller “Locked” sees Skarsgård trapped and tortured inside the car of a sociopath played by Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins. Though his carjacker character is put through the ringer throughout the film, the part allowed him a nice change of pace from the various elements that went into making Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu.”

“I was very happy because I had a bigger break than usual — four or five months, which I really needed in order to shake off Mr. Orlok,” Skarsgård said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “But I read the script for ‘Locked’ around the tail end of ‘Nosferatu’ production. And there’s something about it...

‘Locked’: How Custom Built Lenses Captured Anthony Hopkins’ Psychotic Torture of Bill Skarsgård Inside an SUV
Image
What do you get when you lock a young criminal in a luxury sports utility vehicle that is booby trapped to punish its intruder, thanks to some twisted, sadistic planning by its wealthy, vengeful owner? Well, if those two characters are played by Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins, and the film is directed by David Yarovesky, you get a wild, claustrophobic ride with chaotic camera movement, jump scares and danger that escalates with every scene. All within the confines of an SUV.

When Yarovesky was given the script for “Locked,” which opened in theaters on March 21, he was immediately attracted to the story and how the stakes for the characters continually elevate. On top of that, the tight quarters in which the action takes place was a creative — and technical — challenge he couldn’t resist. “I really hadn’t made a movie like this before,” Yarovesky says. “It felt like...

‘Locked’ Movie Ending Explained: How Does It Differ From The Original Film ‘4×4’?
Image
The ending of Locked was all about Eddie learning the reason why he had been taken on a car ride through hell by William and him trying to escape the madman’s clutches so that he could reunite with his daughter, Sarah. Eddie had broken into William’s car, aptly named Dolus (which means doing something with ill intent), in the hopes of selling it for parts and making some money. But the car became Eddie’s inescapable prison, and its warden was William. Apparently, William was suffering from prostate cancer and only had a few days on his hands. And he wanted to use this time to partake in some good ol’ villainy. Initially, William conversed with Eddie through the car’s in-built phone, but eventually he showed up in person and took Eddie on a long drive, probably with the intention of killing the carjacker at the end of the journey.

‘Locked’ Movie Review: Bill Skarsgard Is Great In An Otherwise Tepid Thriller About Class Conflict
Image
While talking about a recently released Netflix film, I made a (personal) observation that the sentiments around class conflict are becoming convoluted. You see, this particular subgenre of drama was largely geared towards the middle class. I say that because, let’s be honest, the working class probably doesn’t have the time to sit and watch content about how classism is affecting them; they’re living it. Given how the middle class felt that they had been oppressed by the rich, they related with stuff like Knives Out, Parasite, Joker, and more. And then the pandemic happened, and these folks realized that maybe they’re more privileged than they think, and they don’t want to part with some of their luxuries in the name of equality and equity. So, instead of “eating the rich,” they began relating with the rich, which probably contributed to the success of stuff like Succession,...

Locked Review: Merging Thriller, Horror, and Social Commentary
Image
Locked is an American thriller that reinterprets an Argentinian narrative within a confined, intense setting. The film follows a small-time criminal who finds himself trapped inside a secured luxury SUV during an attempted theft. This premise reflects the adaptation of an Argentinian work, 4×4, which earned attention at film festivals. In this version, familiar industry figures contribute to a narrative that transforms a limited space into a stage for personal and societal conflict.

The decision to confine the action to a single, sophisticated vehicle creates a setting that challenges its characters on multiple levels. Every detail of the car is designed to heighten the sense of isolation and pressure felt by the protagonist.

The SUV becomes a site where individual struggle meets the weight of social expectations. The film presents moments of tension interwoven with sharp humor, drawing attention to the clash between inherited cultural traits and modern realities.

This approach...

Bill Skarsgård's Thriller Locked Went Above And Beyond To Maximize Its Primary Location [Exclusive]
Image
In the new B-movie "Locked," Bill Skarsgård plays a down-on-his-luck guy named Eddie who breaks into a luxury SUV in an attempt to make some money to support his family. Unfortunately for Eddie, the owner of that SUV is a deranged maniac named William (Anthony Hopkins), who remotely locks Eddie inside and tortures him over the course of multiple days in an attempt to try to teach him a lesson about right and wrong. A huge percentage of the film takes place inside this vehicle as we're trapped there with Eddie, and in the wrong hands, exploring such a small space over the course of an entire movie could get very boring, very quickly.

Thankfully, director David Yarovesky ("Brightburn") knows how to keep things visually interesting. In a recent interview (which you can hear in full below), he told me all about how he and his collaborators stuck to two...

‘Locked’ Review: Bill Skarsgård Is a Car Thief Trapped Inside Anthony Hopkins’ Self-Driving SUV in a Gimmicky Thriller
Image
If you’re a filmmaker looking to get noticed with a high-concept, low-budget film, trapping a protagonist in a small space for an entire movie is a tried and true strategy.

Joel Schumacher found success by confining Colin Farrell to a pay phone in “Phone Booth,” Willem Dafoe charmed audiences while locked in a penthouse in “Inside,” and now fans of such films can look forward to watching Bill Skarsgård spend almost an entire feature film inside an SUV in “Locked.”

A remake of the Argentine thriller “4×4,” and often too cheesy for its own good, David Yarovesky’s two-hander stars Skarsgård as a small-time carjacker who picks the wrong self-driving vehicle to break into. He finds himself trapped and tortured over the phone by William (Anthony Hopkins), a dying man who is sick of petty crime. The film’s attempts at exploring morality might be underwhelming, but “Locked” finds plenty...

‘Magazine Dreams’ With Jonathan Majors Gets Its Shot In Theaters — Specialty Preview
Image
Magazine Dreams, which premiered at Sundance in 2023, had a long road to the big screen but arrived this weekend, along with Sami Raimi-produced Locked, sci-fi horror Ash, SXSW 2024 Audience and Grand Jury Award-winner Bob Trevino Likes It and Being Maria, a biopic of Last Tango In Paris actress Maria Schneider.

We’ll see. Last weekend was a box office dud and this one looks quiet too as audiences seems to have forgotten they really liked going to movies last fall.

Magazine Dreams, by writer-director Elijah Bynum, after months in the wilderness found a home with Briarcliff Entertainment, which is opening the film at 815 theaters. This will test the Jonathan Majors bodybuilding psychodrama that debuted at Sundance in 2023 but was derailed by abuse accusations against its star after winning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision and a distribution deal with Searchlight Pictures, which dropped it. The actor...

‘Locked’ Review: Anthony Hopkins Terrorizes Bill Skarsgard In An SUV From Hell
Image
You would not be crazy if you confused Steven Knight’s 2013 man-confined-in-a-car movie Locke with director David Yarovesky’s new thriller Locked, which has Bill Skarsgård trapped in a nightmare car with no way out. The former had Tom Hardy as a troubled guy named Locke watching his life unravel during a feature-length road trip. This one has Skarsgård as Eddie, a deadbeat but well-meaning dad to Sarah (Ashley Cartwright) and petty thief whose attempt to steal a luxury SUV turns into disaster because its unseen psycho vigilante owner named William (Anthony Hopkins) has rigged it so bad things happen. And there is no way out as he continues to pull the strings remotely in this motorized fortress as he carries on a conversation with the imprisoned Eddie.

That is the premise of Locked, the latest in a series of horror concepts set in a automobile, except this is no...

Review: Locked is a Thrilling One-Location Remake That Never Runs Out of Gas
Image
When I saw Mariano Cohn’s 4x4 in Austin at Fantastic Fest in 2019, remake potential never crossed my mind. Sure, Americanizations of international horror films have been the rage (especially since the 2000s), but 4x4—a vehicular lockbox thriller—seemed too niche. But, as I should have guessed, any foreign horror-thriller is prime for the remaking, and you know what? David Yarovesky’s Locked is a stellar representation of Cohn’s ambitious single-location potboiler that customizes enough to give it a new car smell.

Bill Skarsgård stars as criminal protagonist Eddie Barrish, a deadbeat dad who picks the wrong luxury Dolus SUV to carjack. Anthony Hopkins plays wealthy English doctor William, the Dolus’ owner who traps Eddie in his fortified four-wheeler. Eddie pries at consoles with crowbars and tries to break bulletproof glass, but it’s no use. William confirms via phone that Eddie’s escape attempts are futile and...

Locked Review: This “Locked in a Car” Thriller Rules!
Image
Plot: A thief breaking into a luxury SUV realizes that he has slipped into a sophisticated game of psychological horror.

Review: Locked is my favorite kind of film: one that relies solely on its lead and an interesting concept to fill out the entire runtime. It never goes off the beaten path and breaks the promise of the premise, which would have been so easy to do. Instead, it executes the basic premise in a way that excites and thrills over its 90-minute runtime. Add in some fantastic performances and you’ve got the makings for one of the most entertaining thrillers of the year.

Locked starts with Eddie (Skarsgård) as he’s looking for an easy score. He seems to find it in the form of an unlocked Svu parked in a random car park. But when he gets in, he discovers that all the doors are locked, and he’s completely trapped.

'Locked' Review: It's Hell on Wheels for Bill Skarsgård
Image
Given how blatantly transparent it has become in recent months that the rich dictate, often without thought or mercy, the fate of the poor, Locked would seem to be in a perfect position to rile up the 99% and grab some free op-ed space. Unfortunately, it's not quite ambitious enough nor insightful enough for that. The film, about a petty thug who breaks into a luxury SUV only to find it’s been booby-trapped by an unseen and obscenely wealthy tormentor, is a B-movie more interested in torturing its main character than inspiring the hoi polloi to march in the streets. But with a few decent tricks up its tailpipe, the latest from Brightburn director David Yarovesky sputters to a tattered and bloody checkered flag.

That main character is played by a terrific Bill Skarsgård, and he’s the only person on screen for most of the film. His character, a hard-up thief named Eddie,...

‘Locked’ Review: Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins Square Off in a Battle of Wheels
Image
“High concept” used to be industry terminology for movies whose premise was precise, succinct and intriguing, but these days it’s used interchangeably as shorthand to describe ones that just sound lazy, instead of creative. Take “Locked” for a timely example: It’s about a thief who finds himself locked inside the car he’s trying to burglarize.

Remaking the 2019 Argentinian film “4×4,” director David Yaroevsky (“Brightburn”) translates that film’s ticking-clock tension into a simmering pressure-cooker character study that’s been superficially overlaid with timely political rhetoric. But seldom has the phrase “mileage may vary” applied more than it does to this film, even with two relative heavyweights — Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins — in its two main roles, as Yaroevsky fulfills his marching orders dutifully, but with uneven success.

Skarsgård plays Eddie Barrish, a ne’er-do-well driver who’s about $500 shy of the cost of the part that will get...

David Zarovesky Talks Humanizing a Familiar Story In Locked
Image
In 2019, the Argentinian thriller4x4 made waves with its biting black comedy, sharp and cynical social commentary, and its eye-catching, relevant premise — a impovershed street criminal finds himself locked in a struggle of life and death after breaking into a self-locking, bulletproof, soundproof, polarized and remote-controlled car owned and operated by a wealthy but morally indignant vigilante. Since its release, this film has been remade a few times, each in a different nation. This time, it's the United States's turn. Directed by David Yarovesky and starring Anthony Hopkins and Bill Skarsgård, Locked revisits this tried-and-true storyline, albeit with a surprisingly humane twist, and more sympathetic characters portrayed by two seasoned, versatile horror icons. When petty criminal Eddie (Skarsgård) is down on his cash and luck, he breaks into a particularly fancy SUV — and finds he can't get out. The vehicle belongs to William (Hopkins), an ailing surgeon who is determined...

Bill Skarsgård Thriller Debuts On Rt With Score That Continues Nosferatu Star's Post-Crow Hot Streak
Image
Bill Skarsgård has continued his Rotten Tomatoes hot streak with his latest thriller. The actor, who is the son of Mamma Mia! and Thor star Stellan Skarsgård and the brother of True Blood and Big Little Lies' Alexander Skarsgård, had his breakout role when he played Pennywise in 2017's It and its 2019 sequel It: Chapter Two. Since then, he has taken on a number of roles in prominent projects including playing Zeitgeist in Deadpool 2, Kro in Eternals, and Marquis Vincent de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4.

Recent Bill Skarsgård movies have had a scattershot response from critics. While the twisty horror-thriller Barbarian (92%) and the action sequel John Wick: Chapter 4 (94%) earned him two Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes scores in a row in 2022 and 2023 respectively, he followed that by starring in a pair of 2024 action movies that earned splats, namely Boy Kills World (58%) and The Crow (21%). However, he closed out...

‘Locked’ Director David Yarovesky on Crashing Two Horror Icons Together
Image
As horror fans, we love our villains. We spend hours analyzing signature weapons while geeking out over our favorite kills. These discussions often lead to imagined scenarios where we pit our favorite bad guys against each other then guess who would win in a head-to-head duel. But it’s rare that we actually get to see this play out. Fortunately, David Yarovesky’s Locked features a high stakes showdown between two genre legends who find themselves trapped by a malevolent car. Both Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) and Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård) climb behind the wheel of this dangerous vehicle knowing that only one will emerge.

In Locked, Eddie (Skarsgård) is a down on his luck car thief trolling the streets in search of a major score. When he stumbles upon a luxury car left unattended and unlocked, he makes the mistake of climbing inside. Just moments later, the...

Locked Review: Anthony Hopkins and Bill Skarsgård Shine in This Solid Horror Remake
Image
What happens when Pennywise breaks into Hannibal Lecter's luxury car? It might be a wild ride, but nothing like Locked.Directed by David Yarovesky and starring Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins, Locked is the American remake of the 2019 Argentinian black-comedy horrorthriller4x4 —the most recent remake in a growing international list this decade. In a landscape dominated by remakes and reboots, on surface level, one might take pause — or possibly cry out in despair — at the notion of watching yet another remake. However, thanks to its all-star cast, creative art direction, and the surprisingly humane artistic liberties and sincere, un-ironic presentation, Locked not only manages to breathe new life into a familiar storyline but gives it a new identity of its own, independent of its source material.

Eddie (Skarsgård) is a petty thief and deadbeat dad whose luck and money are running out. Desperate for cash to pay for his van's repairs,...

Locked Review – Bill Skarsgård is Captivating in Claustrophobic New Thriller
Image
Bill Skarsgård is proving to have the most varied and interesting career of the talented Skarsgård clan. Son of Stellan Skarsgård (Dune: Part Two) and brother of Alexander (The Northman) and Gustaf (Vikings) Skarsgård, Bill has continuously chosen projects that showcase his range and abilities. In Locked he takes on the difficult task of carrying an entire narrative with nothing to work against except the imposing voice of Anthony Hopkins. It’s an imposing challenge that Skarsgård concurs with ease, giving the greatest performance of his career.

‘Locked’ Review: Anthony Hopkins Tortures Bill Skarsgård in Muddled Action Thriller
Image
It doesn’t take much effort to see the allegorical meaning of David Yarovesky’s Locked. William (Anthony Hopkins) is a cancer-stricken billionaire whose grief over the murder of his daughter is equaled only by his vitriol for the poor and a younger generation that he believes is taking more than it gives back. He has so much money that he “can’t keep track” of it, so why not spend it on a rigged luxury vehicle with the purpose of luring would-be thieves?

Enter Eddie (Bill Skarsgård), a wayward ruffian desperate to prove to his ex-wife that he can be a responsible parent to their young daughter (Ashley Cartwright) and who becomes the latest victim of William’s Venus flytrap on wheels. Eddie isn’t one of the people who killed William’s daughter. He’s just a random guy who happened to choose the wrong car to loot,...

Locked Review: The Bill Skarsgard Trapped In A Car Movie Is Weirdly Relatable Right Now
Image
Before my screening of "Locked," director David Yarovesky made a surprise appearance to thank the press and the special guests in attendance, as this would be his first time watching the movie with a crowd outside of friends and colleagues. "When I started making this movie, I cannot tell you how many people said 'Oh cool, that's totally a streaming movie,' [...] so it's surreal because when you walk into an AMC and see it up on the screen like this, you don't know that it's a tiny indie movie." And he's right. "Locked" is the type of indie thriller that used to be a movie theater's bread and butter — low-budget/high-return seat-fillers like Kurt Russell's "Breakdown" or the Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones vehicle, "Blown Away" — that are now immediately dumped onto a streamer and lost to the void of algorithms. It's said often in the wake...
