7 Must-Watch Sci-Fi Shows on Netflix Right Now
Image
As the Netflix library balloons, it can be hard to figure out just where to start when you want something in a specific genre.

The streamer has a large collection of top-tier sci-fi shows on offer for fans of the genre, so where do you begin? Do you go with some strong international offerings made exclusively for Netflix? Do you start with all-time classics of the genre? It can all be a bit daunting.

Luckily, we’ve pared it down to seven great options to check out if you’re yearning for a new sci-fi show to sink your teeth into.

“Dark” (Credit: Netflix) Dark

“Dark” remains to this day the best original offering Netflix has ever released. It is often pitched as a German “Stranger Things,” but that is a wildly reductive way to describe one of the all-time great time travel stories. The three-season show explores a town through three time periods,...

Final Destination Bloodlines Movie Review(Photo Credit –YouTube)

What’s Good: The kill sequences are just as amazing as ever, and the opening must be one of the best in the series.

What’s Bad: Most characters are empty shells waiting to be killed, but that is expected for a film with characters in line only to get killed.

Loo Break: The film is lean and mean, so there aren’t many spaces to take a break.

Watch or Not?: If you loved past installments, then this is a must-watch, and if you are a newcomer, then it is still pretty cool.

Language: English (with subtitles).

Available On: Theaters

Runtime: 110 Minutes.

‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Mother's Day Prank Gives Moms the Thrill They’ve Been Looking For
Image
Over the weekend, mothers and mother figures were celebrated with chocolates, flowers, and cards. But in one movie theater, they may have been more inclined to cut ties with their loved ones rather than pull them into an embrace. As part of the final promo push for Final Destination: Bloodlines, the film hosted a screening event that saw folks turn up with the mothers in their lives to see a newly released rom-com. The twist? Once the lights went down and the film began to roll, what they watched instead was a first look at the latest installment in the beloved horror franchise. Showing off their devilish handiwork, the marketing team put together a reel showcasing the mothers before, during, and after the film. While some were less than pleased with what they were forced to witness, many came out rejuvenated with a love for horror and had nothing but...

‘The Last Of Us’ Season 2 New Characters: Who’s Who?
Image
Every choice has consequences. After two years of a highly anticipated wait, the record-breaking Emmy award winning HBO series The Last of Us returns.

Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season, which saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) massacre a team of doctors who were hoping to cure civilization from the zombie-like disease ravaging the surviving population. The only problem with this plan is that the cost of a potential vaccine came at the expense of fatally experimenting on the mysteriously immune Ellie (Bella Ramsey)—a price Joel wasn’t willing to pay. Now, as a result of their respective actions while searching for safety, Joel and Ellie will be forced to face repercussions from their individual pasts.

Some new faces will appear in Season 2 of The Last of Us, all of whom are from the video game. Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Tati Gabrielle and more will bring these characters to life.

‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ Set a 71-Year-Old Woman on Fire in Record-Breaking Stunt
Yvette Ferguson
Death comes for us all, no matter the age.

Final Destination Bloodlines broke the world record for oldest person set on fire on camera, with 71-year-old stunt performer Yvette Ferguson coming out of retirement for the full-body burn.

“We lit so many different people on fire, including breaking the world record for oldest person on fire with Yvette Ferguson, who did that full body burn in the silver dress,” Zach Lipovsky, who co-directs with Adam Stein, told EW. “That was the oldest person ever on fire, on camera.”

The film’s stunt team reached out to Guinness World Records to officially submit the feat for consideration, but they have not yet heard back.

Ferguson plays Mrs. Fuller, who’s immolated in film’s 1960s-set opening sequence. Iris, a young woman on a date at a restaurant atop a 400-foot-tall tower, has a deadly promotion in which the crowded building collapses.

Andy Chen
Cast of horror film Another includes Heather Langenkamp and Doug Jones
Andy Chen
Last year, filmmaker Andy Chen caught a lot of attention with his short film The Spider, which put a body horror spin on the concept of Spider-Man. Now, our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Chen is making his feature directorial debut with a horror movie called Another – and there are a couple of genre icons in the cast! Heather Langenkamp of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Doug Jones of The Shape of Water star in Another alongside Bob Morley (The 100), India de Beaufort (Kimi), and Anna Akana (A Million Little Things).

Scripted by Chen and Alexander Hernandez-Maxwell, Another follows Joey (de Beaufort), a grief-stricken author haunted by the death of her husband, Ben (Morley), a brilliant physicist. When Ben inexplicably appears one morning, alive and well, making breakfast in their kitchen, Joey is thrust into a waking nightmare where grief, memory, and reality begin to unravel.

‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ Director Teases Premonition That Will Throw Fans “For a Loop”
Zach Lipovsky
If you want to go into Final Destination Bloodlines knowing as little as possible when it hits theaters on May 16, you may want to avoid reading any further.

In a new interview with SFX Magazine, Zach Lipovsky — who co-directs the sixth installment in the horror franchise with Adam Stein — teased a twist on the film’s opening premonition.

“For this film, the first premonition takes place in 1969,” Lipovsky revealed.

“There are lots of deaths during the premonition, which is what normally happens in the opening sequence of a Final Destination movie, but we then come out of the eye of a different person in the modern day. That’s new. For a lot of fans, I think that’s going to immediately throw them for a loop. It’s going to make them lean forward to try and figure out what’s going on.”

He continued, “As moviegoers, we love...

‘Ahsoka,’ ‘Lucifer,’ ‘The 100,’ and ‘The Magicians’ Stars Discuss Latino Representation in Sci-Fi TV
Image
Hollywood’s continued issues with diversity, equity, and inclusion have long been a pain point, especially considering how the resistance to it has proven to leave money on the table. But with respect to the Latino community in particular, which itself is an umbrella for various racial identities, there has been a noticeable uptick in the science fiction and fantasy genres.

Currently airing blockbuster series like “The Last of Us” and “Andor” have multiple Latino leads front and center, with shows like “Wednesday” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” also bringing representation forward in spaces where Latinos were once excluded.

Above, IndieWire hosts an exclusive panel organized by the National Hispanic Media Coalition (Nhmc), and its President & CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo, discussing what more representation in the science fiction and fantasy genres has meant for the Latino community, featuring actors Aimee Garcia, Eman Esfandi, Lindsey Morgan,...

Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill Joins MonsterVerse; Set To Star In Godzilla x Kong 3
Image
Multiple sources are reporting that Sam Neill (Jurassic Park; Thor: Ragnarok; Peaky Blinders) has joined the cast of Legendary's next MonsterVerse installment, the tentatively titled Godzilla x Kong 3.

Plot details are being kept strictly under wraps for now, but the studio has teased that the new film, which is being helmed by Grant Sputore, will follow “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

It's up for debate what that cataclysmic world-ending threat could be, but the previous film's director Adam Wingard teased last year that, if he were to direct the next film, Destoroyah might be in the cards. Speaking with Discussing Film, he said,

"I’ll say this, one of my top Godzilla movies is Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. The reason it’s one of my favorite films is I don’t think any other Godzilla movie,...

Who Plays Nora In The Last Of Us Season 2
Image
HBO's TV adaptation of "The Last of Us" has brought in a ton of new talent for its sophomore season, many of whom are portraying characters from the second video game in the series, "The Last of Us Part II." Anyone who's played the game will be familiar with Nora, a key part of Abby's crew, former Firefly, and member of the Washington Liberation Front. The character was voiced by Chelsea Tavares in the game, who you may also recognize from her role as Patience Robinson on "All American."

Nora is back in the "Last of Us" TV series, played this time by Tati Gabrielle, a rising star who already has some major TV credits to her name. She's also something of a regular for Naughty Dog, the game developer responsible for the "Last of Us" games. Gabrielle previously played the villainous Jo Braddock in "Uncharted," the live-action Tom Holland adaptation of Naughty Dog's tomb-robbing,...

‘Warfare’ Reconstructs Real Navy Seal Mission With Ground-Level Focus
Alex Garland in 28 Jours plus tard (2002)
Warfare, co-directed and co-written by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, draws from firsthand accounts of a Navy Seal mission in Ramadi, Iraq, in November 2006. The script is based entirely on the memories of Mendoza and his fellow SEALs, offering a close-up view of an overnight surveillance operation that shifted into active conflict.

The film begins with a unit of Navy SEALs splitting into three teams. Their task: occupy a residential building under cover of darkness to observe enemy movement and secure the area for incoming ground forces. The mission, carried out in a region known for Al Qaeda activity, unfolds in confined interior spaces with little exposition and minimal dialogue. Military jargon is used without translation, and characters are shown as coordinated parts of a functioning team rather than as individually profiled figures.

The cast includes D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai as a young Ray Mendoza. Woon-a-Tai gained attention for his work on Reservation Dogs,...

Image
Exclusive: Australian actress Alycia Debnam-Carey (Apple Cider Vinegar) is the newest addition to the cast of the still-untitled new Monsterverse movie from Legendary.

Character description is under wraps. The project reunites Debnam-Carey with Kaitlyn Dever, with whom she just starred in the hit Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar. As previously announced, others in the ensemble include Jack O’Connell, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, and Dan Stevens, who reprises his role as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the highest-grossing installment in the franchise.

'Life Is About Trial and Error': Finn Wolfhard Reveals His Biggest Stranger Things Regret
Image
Stranger Things is one of Netflix's most popular shows of all time. The series debuted in 2016, and the child actors instantly rose to fame.

Stranger Things is set in 1980s Indiana, in a fictional small town named Hawkins, where an alternate dimension exists. Although the cast features other famous names including Winona Ryder and David Harbour, the series made Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp famous instantly. In a new interview with People, Wolfhard revealed what he would've done differently regarding his Stranger Things fame.

Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on the series, had had small roles in series like The 100 and Supernatural, but he became an overnight success at the age of 13 when Stranger Things came out. Looking back to his journey so far, the actor revealed he doesn't have major regrets about the series, but he would've done one thing differently.

‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ Teaser Puts Death on the Hunt Again
Image
Death sets one unsuspecting tattoo artist’s business (and body) ablaze in the fiery, gruesome first teaser trailer for “Final Destination Bloodlines.”

Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, whose previous credits include 2018’s “Freaks” and the live-action “Kim Possible” movie, the new film comes 14 years after “Final Destination 5” hit theaters in 2011. It’s based on a screenplay by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick (“Scream IV”) and will follow a new assortment of characters as they try to cheat Death and escape the grisly, cartoonishly constructed ends that await them.

The film’s first trailer is a simple return to form for the “Final Destination” franchise. Across its succinct two minutes, the spot follows a tattooist (Richard Harmon) grieving his father’s recent passing who ends up caught literally in a quickly escalating trap set in motion by Death itself. The results are predictably brutal and horrifying.

Check out the teaser below.
