Horrific documentary about real life monsters
alexischristo-938905 March 2023
A very well made documentary about one of the few French serial killer and his wife who essentially helped and enabled all the horror. They really go into a lot of the sordid details, so it's definitely not for the faint hearted.

Apparently some viewers have complained about the English audio dubbing, it seems they might not be aware that subtitles exist or just can't are too lazy to read them. Giving bad reviews for something like that is pretty sad.

It's too bad, because this show really deserves a watch, even though it's a difficult watch where the worst of human nature is put on display.

Excellent documentary
shanti_x15 March 2023
It has its ups and downs, but overall it's a well made documentary. I do have to say that it's a hard watch because the case is disturbing. And by that I mean really disturbing. It involves such young children (youngest being 9) and the details that are shared are sickening.

I genuinely feel like I wasn't prepared for this experience, cause the way they made this, with the police pictures of Olivier reenacting what happened and how it happened, made me feel like being there in a way, actively watching them commit their crimes. It's disturbing.

No true crime documentary has gotten to me this way before.

And for the people giving this below 5 stars for it being English dubbed, just keep the French and use subtitles. Do you never watch anything other than your own language?..

A Dark Story
Pairic8 March 2023
Monique Olivier: Accessory to Evil, France's Rosemary West, she assisted her husband Michel Fourniret in the abduction, torture and rape of young women and girls. Disturbing, graphic descriptions of the crimes. One of the victims was English and a Detective Chief Superintendent is one of the talking heads. Unlike Rosemary but like Myra Hindley West Olivier has after many years helped police in the search for the bodies of missing victims. Some were found. She'll be eigible for parole 2032 but faces further trials. A bit stretched out in 5 episodes on Netflix, it could have been done in 3. Directed by Christophe Astruc and Michelle Fines. 7/10.

French Mysogony
toonf830 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The prosecutor is a buffoon, the stunt he orchestrated having the victims family leave the courtroom, with pictures left behind, right as the defense was about to present it's case? Shows a complete lack of respect for the french legal system. He was more interested in winning than serving justice. Disturbing, truly.

The inability of the victims families to see the amount of control the killer had over his wife makes me wonder about the level of Mysogony in France. Sad story on so many levels.

It seemed obvious to me that she was in fear for her own life. In my experience men like him , sexual sadists with issues over power and control, don't limit it to their victims. Really makes me question my dreams of seeing France.

Hate dubbing
nikkigreeley9 March 2023
I don't understand why Netflix puts out shows that have two languages dubbed over each other!!! You and understand anything being said because you trying to focus on one language but can hear two. What is Netflix doing? So many great shows on the streaming service but it is horrible trying to watch and I end up having to just stop watching after 20 minutes. I wish the producers would start listening to the viewers complaints and start changing the formatting for the audio. It's really annoying to want to watch the show but being so annoyed that you just can't. I have ADHD too so I find it very hard to focus on it.

Annoying audio
IloveBentley4 March 2023
The audio had English spoken over French spoken which added nothing to the documentary and was extremely annoying. If not for this it would have been much easier to watch. I would like to know why the film makers did that. It had the effect of sounding like a lot of loud background interference. I just coul not get really engaged because of this. It is a shame because I've not heard of this person before and would have liked to find out more. As of now I'm just watching until I can longer endure the noise pollution of spoken French background noise. I am a fan of true crime this is the first time I have not been able to finish a true crime film.

Who bears the most responsibility?
atleverton5 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Culpability is an interesting aspect of the legal system. When a crime is committed and two people are involved how can you separate one person's guilt from another? This documentary series is another and a long line of attempts to present horrifying crimes that end up somewhat glamorizing the perpetrators of those crimes. In this particular case a woman and her husband go on a murder spree in France and Belgium. One of the potential victims escapes and she is able to identify her attackers and they both shortly are arrested thereafter. The question though is the man wholly responsible for his crimes or was he like some kind of Beast fed encouraged and manipulated by an evil woman. I don't think that the woman in this case is necessarily innocent. He clearly outlined what he wanted to do in his life horrifying crimes before they ever met and she was quite okay with that. So that suggests there is a degree of culpability there. However, the whole tone of this series shifts after it is revealed that she took some IQ test and she scored in the top percentage of french people. And her husband took the same IQ test and he was in the bottom percentage of people. Then the narrative becomes that she is some sort of master manipulator and she is the one who is really guilty for these crimes that they both committed. But showing the IQ test at least the examples that were shown in the documentary reveals absolutely no connection to the crimes or the topic at hand. It is possible for someone who is intelligent to be abused and emotionally abused and to be a victim as well. Not to say that she as I said before is completely Innocent but I doubt that she is a master manipulator when he was the one who murdered and did other horrible things to his victims. It's probably not worth your time watching this.

Too slow. Stretching it out
s_connors7 March 2023
Super slow and stretching it out like a lot of docs these days. Really hard to continue watching because it's so dragged out. Do better

Nobody wants to keep p hearing the same stuff over and over. Lost interest due to being in my phone cause it was boring and repetitive

Not sure why I need to leave such a long review. Stupid reall, the truth can be told in much less words

Trying to weed out the bad apples I guess. Otherwise, it's alright I guess but no need to be so stretched out. Unnecessary m, like this review

Why why why do I have to keep typing. Who knows? There are better docs available. Look harder.

Audio
mgosi5 March 2023
It is difficult to understand two languages that are spoken simultaneously. It would have been 'listenable' if the translated language was louder than the primary or the original language. But having both languages competing for your attention is almost impossible to follow. I do believe it is possible to easily remedy this so that we can follow the series as currently it is difficult to do so. I know there is an option to watch the series in French with subtitles but I'm not a fan of subtitles whilst watching engaging films or series, so, it would be prudent if Netflix could sort out the audio issues.

Netflix's recipe for mediocrity, now in French
dinonegraff13 March 2023
This review is not about the case nor should it be. It's about the trivial format of the docuseries. Rehashed ideas now in French. The viewer needs to hear every aspect of the case so you bring in psychology experts who mock the woman and her appearance and mimick her behavior as kids. Then you bring in her lawyer who someone thought "hey let's have a scene of him running with his tights and earphones and next scene smoking outside of court so viewers know he means business". Should have been 1 episode, the rest is taunting the victims for more screen time.

P. S. People who complain about the voice over instead of watching it with subs should have the right of voting revoked from them, I mean come on humanity.

Another one of those Netflix docu series that should have been a movie
alex_with_a_P23 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The case in itself is interesting. But it's very unsatisfying to watch. Like every Netflix series it turns and twists itself like pretzel to create tension, so we have the obligatory back and forth of time jumps. Only once would I like to see a docu series who has the discipline to tell it's story chronologically. For example it is revealed that the perpetrator owned a castle, and you immediately go "wait what?" but the series goes on for another twenty minutes until they even adress this detail.

It's stuff like this, the dramatic re-enactments and tired symbolic images when they show a spider or the 13th time the same shot of a stuffed animal. It's tiring, it's clearly filler what should have been at best 3 episodes. And then we don't get a real conclusion. Some of the deductions are baffling, the prosectur and psychologists come to the conclusion that she has a very high IQ and therefore couldn't be stupid enough to be manipulated by her husband. But what does intelligence have to do with the tendency of being vulnerable to manipulation? Isn't this more of a psychological issue? They don't factor in her psychological profile, her upbringing or family background? I was hoping we get some revelations on the missing cases or the real face of the perpetrators. But to no avail.

The series cocludes that the last living accomplice gets a kick out of being the center of attention, so congratulations for giving that criminal individual her own Netflix series.

No question
mls418213 March 2023
Of course this person is just as culpable as the rapist! She aided, abetted and even helped him become erect. Ugh. Wish I didn't know THAT.

This docuseries was far, FAR longer than necessary. In fact, if not for being dubbed, I'd have never made it through one episode. Six hours of reading subtitles was NOT going to happen.

If it isn't bad enough to know about all these innocent girls losing their lives but these evil creatures having a child in the midst of this!

After watching only half of this I need five steam showers and six appointments with my therapist.

No port for the wife, not at all.

Too slow .....
ranoosh20057 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Why spending our time for nothing . If we can readers it in any news on google search He is died , and she still not Talking .

Perhaps she is the mind and he was the muscles, but we will never know. He may have written in his last letter that there are more bodies to blame her , as she did to him when she imprisoned him for about twenty years. It is true that he kidnapped and raped young girls and killed them. He was the beast . But she is the devil who decorated him and made everything easy for him

Okay way I saw the show wen I can read the short story in ten minutes . So Why we spend 5 hours for hear he said she said ....... I hear Just plaa plaa plaa .

It was painful for many families to remember the stories of the victims, some not knowing where their bodies were or what happened to them . So my deep condolences for them .

Yet another one....
waltherjonas9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So Netflix has done it again, a rushed documentary. The result? A documentary that just scratshes the surface of the crimes. We have seen it before, a criminalcase that shooked the world, so horrifying that the stomach turns inside out, but Netflix misses the goal by rushing to the finishline. All in the hopes to please the subscribers. I would like to have seen more authentic interviews, more news from the time, a deeper analys of the couple. Instead we get a short documentry where the villain wins....again. She loves to be in the center of attention and that is just what this documentry does, puts the evil woman in the center of attention again. She fooled and played with justice and now she is playing with Netflix. Avoid this if you can.
