BAFTA-Winner Nick Leather Behind TV Drama Exploring “Most Successful Law Enforcement Operation In UK History”
Image
Exclusive: BAFTA-winner Nick Leather is heading inside the National Crime Agency (Nca) and the “most successful law enforcement operation in UK history” for his latest TV project.

Leather has tied with Mood producer Bonafide Films on the as-yet-untitled series, which we are told is in early-stage conversation with potential buyers. Tom Dunbar is producing.

Leather’s drama will reveal the inner workings of the Nca through a story that focuses on the 2020 infiltration of the encrypted phone-system EncroChat, and how it gave the agency a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to decimate the criminal underworld. With a ticking clock, a secret to keep hidden and in the face of unprecedented challenges, the Nca ultimately delivered ‘Operation Venetic’, which Leather and the creative team described as the “most successful law enforcement operation in UK history.” There have been more than 3,400 arrests so far including almost 13,300 years of combined sentencing, and the operation is still ongoing.

Strange New Worlds Is Wasting A Perfect Star Trek Legacy Guest Star
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has wasted the opportunity to break bag this great legacy character. After being introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike quickly became a fan favorite. This led Paramount to greenlight a spin-off following Captain Pike, Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), and their Enterprise crew, and Strange New Worlds was born. With pitch-perfect casting, Strange New Worlds has reintroduced several Star Trek legacy characters, including Lt. Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has added depth to characters like Uhura, and has the opportunity to bring in even more legacy characters in the seasons to come. Star Trek: Discovery may have received mixed reviews from some fans, but the show nevertheless introduced some amazing characters to Star Trek canon. As a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, Discovery also incorporated some classic characters from the 1960s,...

ITV Seeks Post Office Drama Successor With Series On Devastating Contaminated Blood Scandal Penned By Peter Moffat
Image
Exclusive: ITV is on the hunt for a Mr Bates vs the Post Office successor and has landed on the devastating contaminated blood scandal, with Peter Moffat attached.

Double-BAFTA winner Moffat is writing the untitled series based on what took place in the 1970s and 1980s, which ITV is describing as the “biggest health scandal in our history.”

The drama focuses on how haemophiliacs and those with other blood disorders were contaminated with tainted blood infecting them with HIV and hepatitis. In 2022, a report found that around 1,250 people with bleeding disorders were infected with HIV and that at least a further 2,400 people were infected with Hepatitis C. Around three-quarters of those infected with HIV died and at least 700 infected with Hepatitis C died, the report concluded. An inquiry took place last year with the likes of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak interviewed.

Drawing obvious comparisons with the post office series,...

Peter Moffat to Adapt True Life Auschwitz Outbreak Book ‘The Escape Artist’ as Limited Series
Image
“Silk” screenwriter Peter Moffat is adapting Jonathan Freedland’s non-fiction book “The Escape Artist,” which tells the true story of two Jews who escaped from Auschwitz.

Margery Bone’s Bonafide Films has secured the rights to Freedland’s book, which is set to be made into a high-end limited series. Bonafide, who have a development and distribution deal with BBC Studios, recently produced Nicôle Lecky’s BAFTA-winning “Mood.”

“The Escape Artist” centers around nineteen-year-old Rudolf Vrba, a Slovakian Jew who manages to escape Auschwitz alongside fellow internee Fred Wetzler, and warn the world about what was happening. Their actions saved the lives of at least 200,000 Jews who were facing immediate deportation from Budapest to the world’s most notorious death camp.

“This is a story of how human beings can be pushed to the outer limits, and yet still somehow endure,” said Freeland. “How the actions of one individual, even a teenage boy,...

Peter Moffat Penning TV Adaptation Of Jonathan Freedland’s ‘The Escape Artist’
Image
Peter Moffat is forging a TV adaptation of UK journalist Jonathan Freedland’s The Escape Artist with Mood production outfit Bonafide Films.

The Your Honor and Criminal Justice BAFTA winner is onboard to write the show telling the astonishing, true-life story of how Rudolf Vrba, a 19-year-old Slovakian Jew, along with fellow inmate Fred Wetzler, escaped from Auschwitz to warn the world about the Holocaust. The pair’s report led to the saving of 200,000 Budapest Jews from immediate deportation to Auschwitz. The project is not yet attached to a network and Bonafide has secured rights for TV.

Freedland is a highly-regarded British journalist who mainly writes on politics and international affairs for The Guardian but has also penned numerous works of fiction, some of which are under the pseudonym Sam Bourne.

Margery Bone’s London-based Bonafide has previously worked with Moffat on BBC drama The Last Post, which starred Jessie Buckley...

Wtf Happened to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial?
Image
In hindsight, it’s a story so simple a child could’ve come up with it. A story about a boy feeling lost and alone in the world. He befriends a small alien, similarly lost and alone in the world. Their bond is almost immediate, and in a few short days, they become the best of friends. But the alien doesn’t belong here, and the boy knows it. One day soon, that loveable creature will have to return home, and when he does, he won’t be coming back… The end.

It might not sound spectacular on paper, but with the right storyteller in charge, the result broke millions of hearts and earned hundreds of millions of dollars. When Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial came out in June of 1982, the world was not quite prepared for just how much of a phenomenon the movie – and its title character – would become.

How Jonathan Frakes Set The Stage For Lower Decks' Best Star Trek Cameos
Image
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" exists in its own humble, chaotic space in the "Star Trek" canon. As a zany adult animated series, its tone is far different from the rest of the franchise. One would think this would be a detriment to how the show would be perceived, and yes, there are some detractors — but "Lower Decks" has its loyal fans, not just within the fandom but also notably within the legacy cast of the franchise.

Despite its main cast being a wacky group of underdogs, "Lower Decks" has seen an impressive amount of cameos from "Star Trek" alumni, including notable fan favorites like J.G. Hertzler as General Martok, James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane, and Alice Krige as the Borg Queen. But one of the first and most substantial cameos came in the return of "The Next Generation" alumni Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi and Jonathan Frakes as William Riker...

Star Trek: Prodigy Crew and Characters Have Deep Connections to Trek History
Star Trek: La serie original (1966)
The next starship crew exploring the Final Frontier of Star Trek has arrived. No, it’s not guest stars for Picard Season 2, or a full break-down of the rest of the Strange New Worlds gang. Instead, after a decent amount of speculation, the full cast and character list for the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has been revealed. And, it turns out there are some massive deep cuts to old school Star Trek canon, specifically, The Original Series.

Remember when Spock wore that red visor in the classic Star Trek episode “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” Well, one of the new alien crewmembers on Prodigy is a direct call-back to that alien species. Here’s the details of the new Prodigy crew and how it all connects to the larger Trek universe and timeline.

Mild potential spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy ahead.

Jerry O'Connell, Dawnn Lewis, Fred Tatasciore, Gillian Vigman, Paul Scheer, Eugene Cordero, Noël Wells, Jack Quaid, Gabrielle Ruiz, and Tawny Newsome in Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.

With most new Star Trek shows, locating the Easter eggs and references takes probably at least two viewings. But, with Lower Decks, you can watch an episode four times and still be missing references and Easter eggs. This is saying something when you also consider that these episodes are half as long as episodes of Discovery or Picard. So, with that in mind, like in the previous episodes, there is almost certainly something we missed in trying to gather all the Easter eggs and references from Lower Decks episode 4, “Moist Vessel.”

From a surprise guest star (Haley Joel Osment) to a heartwarming story about Mariner and Captain Freeman (briefly) becoming allies, this episode was about a lot more than just Easter eggs. But that’s not why you’re here. You came for the Trekkie eggs and you shall have them!

Sneak Peeks and Side Trips: Star Trek Short Treks Season 2
During the 2018-19 season hiatus, Star Trek fans were blown away by the production value, narrative depth, and pure guilty pleasure of Star Trek: Short Treks Season 1.

Although Star Trek: Short Treks Season 2 offers more episodes, several are considerably shorter in length and lighter in content.

As a whole, they maintain the visual excellence of Season 1 and even stretch the innovation of the series with two animated episodes.

What the new season does best is provide many fan-pleasing Easter Eggs, homages to well-known classic incidents, and a chance to hang out with the newest incarnations of Spock, Number One, and Pike.

However, the jury's still out on the insights it provides on the highly-anticipated new series, Star Trek: Picard, the upcoming third season of Star Trek: Discovery, and the new animated series, Star Trek: Below Decks.

Where the first season of mini-episodes was, for the most part, intrinsic to understanding...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 12 Easter Eggs & References
Ryan Britt Apr 4, 2019

Did you catch all of the Star Trek references in "Through the Valley of Shadows"?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 12, "Through The Valley of Shadows."

It seems hard to believe, but with its latest episode, the second season of Star Trek: Discovery is almost over. After Episode 12, there are only two episodes left in the season, which leaves very little time for all sorts of mysteries of the Red Signals, Control, and the future of the ship to be wrapped up.

In the meantime, though, “Through the Valley of Shadows,” had some pretty hardcore Easter eggs and references. And if even if you caught the obvious ones about a certain Captain’s future, there were some more subtle nods you might have missed. Here’s everything we noticed on the Easter egg front for "Through the Valley of Shadows."

Harry Mudd Returns In New Star Trek: Short Treks Trailer
The Short Treks mini-episodes that CBS have been releasing in the run-up to Star Trek Discovery‘s second season have been a little bit up and down in terms of quality. “Calypso” was light years ahead of the rest of them, but even the most forgettable has shone a light into a corner of the Trek universe that doesn’t normally get an airing. Now, we’ve got a look at the next (and final) mini-episode, set to feature everyone’s favorite slimy space-crook, Harry Mudd.

Mudd was one of the more iconic foes from The Original Series. His creation was sparked by the writers’ concerns that audiences wouldn’t be able to relate to the fears caused by their more outlandish villains and so decided to pit the crew of the Enterprise against what amounts to a sleazy salesman, but in space. After years as just a memory, Mudd...

It will debut October 4, with a new episode monthly. In total, there will be four. It's not Season 2, but it's something to tide us over, we guess.

But what will each episode be about, exactly?

“Runaway” — “Onboard the U.S.S. Discovery, Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.” “Calypso” — “After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.

New BBC drama Undercover starring Sophie Okonedo and Adrian Lester gives you two quality dramas for the price of one…

The whims of TV scheduling sometimes result in the same actor appearing in multiple shows on air at the same time. Remember Tuppence Middleton spending Sundays as scheming adulteress Helene in War & Peace and Thursdays as Dickensian’s preyed-upon heiress? Or Stephen Rea morphing from Prince Kuragin to Inspector Bucket and back again in the same brace of dramas?

With Sophie Okonedo in Undercover, the BBC seems to have pulled off the same trick in a single episode. Undercover gives you two quality dramas for the price of one.

The first is set in the wide, deserted landscapes of the American south and stars Okonedo as a compassionate lawyer burning with the injustice of her client’s imminent execution. It’s all stifling heat, prison gate vigils,...

Writers Guild Italia & The Black List Pact; Ed Guiney Set For Efa Honor: Global Showbiz Briefs
Liste noire (1995)

The Black List notes that although most Wgi members write primarily in Italian, many have great facility with the English language. Given the fluid language barriers, plus translation, and the unique point of view, culture, and style...
