It was simply too bland...
paul_haakonsen9 March 2023
When I sat down to watch the 2023 TV crime drama movie "Black Girl Missing" from Life, I had never actually heard about it. But I had the chance to watch it, and of course I did so, as I believe all movies deserve a fair chance.

However, I will say that writer Kale Futterman didn't exactly bring about an overly thrilling or entertaining script for the movie. Sure, the topic of the movie is something that is important and need attention, but the movie itself just lacked momentum, drive and there simply was no force to its punch. And that made for a rather dull and bland movie experience.

I am not saying that the acting performances in "Black Girl Missing" were bad, because they weren't. And they actually had a good cast ensemble in the movie. It was just a shame that the actresses and actors in the movie didn't have a more fulfilling and compelling script and storyline to work with.

While watchable, then director Delmar Washington's movie "Black Girl Missing" just wasn't outstanding or memorable. When you've watched it one time, you will most likely never return to the movie a second time, simply because there is hardly enough contents to the storyline to support the first viewing.

There are far better and more enjoyable movies about abductions and kidnappings out there. "Black Girl Missing" came and went without leaving much of a lasting impression.

My rating of "Black Girl Missing" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Great Idea, Poorly Executed.

Lifetime really talked this one up, so of course I saved it to watch. I tried to watch it today, and sadly didn't even finish it. This topic is something that NEEDS to have a light shone on it, but this movie did not help the cause. I really can't even put my finger on it, but it didn't hold my attention so I was lost a lot. Some of the scenes where the actors were trying to be pensive about something, I was like, "What are we supposed to be thinking they are thinking?" Again, lost. Finally I just gave up. The missing girl should have maybe had more scenes because as a viewer, I had no attachment to the character. The other characters seemed so shallow and boring, I didn't have any attachment to them either.

Warning: Spoilers
Great story so much more could have been done with this. I am always shocked by the way America treats its missing women black or white especially when they are so young. I can never believe that they are so casual and believe that so many young women choose to leave their families. Sadly this film was so very boring and badly acted that i lost interest very quickly and i am sure everyone else will feel the same. There was no real ending to this film either. It beggars belief that her mum actually found her and rescued her. Why had the white man abducted her and how had he managed todo that and no one saw or heard a thing. Is it the american way? You are in a community but not really part of it. Oh i didnt see/hear a thing. How can this happen so much in America?

Poorly Made
arfdawg-12 March 2024
Well it's Lifetime, so you KNOW it's gonna be bad. And in that regard, it does not disappoint.

Like most Lifetime movies, the film is cheaply made, the story is rather poorly written and the execution is pretty weak. This one has the added attraction of bias.

I only put this on the see Garcelle. I had no idea who she was other than being on the Housewives show and being the type that is easily triggered.

She's not a good actress. In fact, how she has an acting career is astounding. She's juvie level.

In sum this movie isn't worth your time. The subject matter is all BS. All it does is further division.

I was bored out of my mind.

It's good

Black Girl Missing" is a Lifetime movie that hits close to home with its poignant message and powerful acting. While the plot may be predictable at times, the film does an excellent job of highlighting important stereotypes and raising awareness about the issue of missing Black girls.

The performances in the movie are particularly strong, with the actors bringing depth and emotion to their roles. The characters are well-developed and the audience is drawn into their struggles and experiences.

What really stands out about "Black Girl Missing" is its dedication to bringing attention to the issue of missing Black girls. The film is unapologetic in its message and doesn't shy away from difficult conversations about race and the criminal justice system.

While the movie may not be perfect, it is an important piece of cinema that sheds light on an issue that is often overlooked. "Black Girl Missing" is a must-watch for anyone interested in social justice and fighting for a more equitable world.

Very Good!
gab-6759912 March 2023
This has to be one of the better movies in Lifetime's collection. That I have seen so far. To be honest I have seen almost all of them, not including some of the older movies.

I see other reviews saying it was not good. The acting was believable and I wanted to see what would happen next. That alone makes this a good movie. It hit home for me as a mother of hispanic background though. Not sure what true story this was based on, but at the end it really hit you when they showed ALL of the girls of color still missing. Even worse them not getting the recognition they deserve just due to race! Sad but completely true!

I highly recommend if you are a fan on LM's because this one was a good one and at least deserved a 5 or up. It was at least half good. If this happened to me I would have done the exact same thing! As always, watch it and be your own judge!

Worth watching
ehdover-095169 April 2023
Given the subject matter of this film and the overall message, I am shocked that the reviews are so harsh.

Black Girl Missing sheds light on missing persons. Always worthwhile. Additionally, this film is connected to the Black and Missing Foundation - a real organization you can look up to learn more.

There are so many stories shared every single day. Give every piece of work the respect it deserves by simply viewing it and positively reflecting on why it matters.

As someone living in Canada, I cannot fathom the population sizes of some American cities. Give the film some credit for bringing attention to a topic many seldom think about.

Great Movie
anonymousbeats20 September 2023
This movie goes to show that America doesn't care about African Americans or other minority races. It's a great movie that shows exactly how we are marginalized and disregarded everyday. There needs to be more movies like this to shine a bigger light on the injustice our communities across the world have to face. It's sad how she had to do her own leg work and look for her daughter herself risking her own life in the process. It's pathetic that no one really cares about us. We have to care about ourselves and do for ourselves. Minority communities cannot go to the police for help. If it doesn't make ratings it doesn't matter. It's all about views and ratings.

Above Average, Urgent Message
gymnckv5 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Really good movie. It was really strong especially the beginning. There was strong character development and building of the relationship between the sisters with a very strong sense of family dynamics. It was disappointing yet realistic when the mother minimised the whole depression and anxiety her daughter was experiencing. This led to the daughter leaving home early to return to college but it was surprising that she's been missing a whole two days before the family realised something was wrong. The film did a good job depicting the kind of isolation that can happen at college and the silent bullying that Lauren experienced from her roommate Anna.

I felt the movie did a good job showing how the authorities and local journalists discounted for the disappearance of a young black girl compared to a young white girl. The higher value placed on a white girl was frustrating to witness. To see Lauren's disappearance repeatedly downplayed by the police and others was truly horrible but also unfortunately a realistic depiction of unconscious bias and institutional racism in real life. I did feel that while watching the movie there were some new parts of the film that were hugely informative such as the sad existence of the network to find missing black girls.

Despite the film's strong message, yes the film could have been more dynamic with a stronger sense of urgency, more thrills, and clarity around the plot, such as why & how was she taken, etc. I thought all of the actors performances were really good and I'd recommend this movie.
