- High school guys visit a brothel twice. We see several women's breasts and butts as they select which guy to serve. Sex is implied but not shown.
- Societal hostility toward, and fear of being outed as homosexual are depicted.

- Several vicious fist fights occur. We see bruised and cut faces with small amounts of blood. Violence is threatened many times.
- Pistols are brandished several times, used to threaten people a couple of times, used for shooting targets, and handled carelessly.
- Rioting between protestors and police is shown, but mostly limited to shoving. A sense of danger from the police and other government actors is depicted.
- A parent threatens violence against one high school guy on multiple occasions. Other guys refer to the potential for violence from parents.
- Several times a guy grabs, threatens, and coerces his sister to make her comply with his idea of how girls should behave. A man attempts to verbally dominate his wife. Declining acceptance of these actions, which the characters call "macho", is a source of contention.

- Colombia's change allowing legal use of marijuana occurs during the timeline of this story. High school students smoke weed a couple of times. Drug smuggling to countries where it is prohibited plays a significant role in the plot.
- Adults and high school students drink alcohol, sometimes to drunkenness, and smoke cigarettes.

- Some of the fights are brutal, though brief. The pain and stress of family relationships and of young romantic relationships is intense.
