How to Make Gravy

‘Titane’ Star Agathe Rousselle & Sallie Harmsen Join Apple TV+ Heist Series ’12 12 12’
Image
Exclusive: Agathe Rousselle, who broke out in 2021 Cannes Palme d’Or winning body-horror Titane, and Sallie Harmsen (Blade Runner 2049) have joined the cast of Apple TV+ heist series 12 12 12, alongside Anthony Mackie, Jamie Dornan, who also produce.

Co-produced by Skydance Television and Anonymous Content, 12 12 12 unfolds across three timelines of a heist: the 12 months of planning, the 12 hours of the heist, and the 12 days following the heist.

The series follows a disgraced FBI agent (Mackie) and an American career criminal (Dornan) who play a zero-sum game of cat and mouse across Europe. At the center of it all is the daring, epic raid on a bank vault deep beneath the streets of Zurich.

The show is created and written by Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble, who will also executive produce.

Kari Skogland will direct the pilot, as well as executive produce. Mackie executive produces via his Make It With Gravy production company alongside Jason Spire for Inspire Entertainment.

The casting announcement comes hot on the heels of news last week that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has also joined the cast.

French actress Rousselle, who splits her time between Paris and San Francisco, and Dutch actress Harmsen have signed for regular roles in the series.

In the meantime, Rousselle will next be seen in French director Laurent Slama’s Paris 2024 Olympics-set and shot drama A Second Life, which world premieres in Tribeca in June. She co-stars opposite Alex Lawther (The End of the F**ing World) as a depressed woman working for a holiday lets concierge company, whose life changes when she meets a free-spirited traveller.

Other credits since Titane, in which Rousselle played a psychopath with a titanium plate in her head, have included French Netflix Original Feature Gold Brick and Australian drama How To Make Gravy, while she also appeared in Last Days, an opera based on the Gus Van Sant film, directed by Matt Copson, and performed at both the Royal Opera House in London and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Sallie Harmsen gained international attention in Blade Runner 2049 (2017) opposite Jared Leto, Devils (2020), The Postcard Killings (2020), directed by Oscar-winner Danis Tanović and the BBC-series Delia (2024).

She also starred in Drawback (2023) opposite Claes Bang and will soon be seen in a leading role in the series, Suga, for Amazon Prime Video. She’s been nominated for a Dutch Academy Award (Golden Calf) twice in The Netherlands.

Rousselle is is repped by CAA and Adéquat and Sallie Harmsen is represented by No19 Talent Management and United Agents.

12 12 12 is a co-production between Anonymous Content and Skydance Television. Skogland, Appleton, Keeble, Mackie, Dornan, and Spire will executive produce alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell for Skydance Television, and David Levine and Garrett Kemble for Anonymous Content. Samantha Corbin-Miller also serves as executive producer.

How to Make Gravy Review: Redemption and Grief on an Aussie Christmas Plate
Image
Paul Kelly’s song “How to Make Gravy” captures a deeply personal story of family tension and redemption. The film adaptation by Nick Waterman and Megan Washington expands the track’s emotional landscape, transforming its compact narrative into a broader cinematic experience.

The adaptation skillfully sidesteps literal interpretation. Instead of direct song quotations, the directors craft a nuanced backstory for Joe (Daniel Henshall), a troubled father who ends up in prison after a violent confrontation with his brother-in-law.

This narrative approach allows exploration of complex themes like family dynamics and personal struggle. The film examines Joe’s internal conflicts and attempts to reconnect with his family, creating a rich emotional terrain that echoes the song’s raw sentiment.

While the expanded narrative sometimes feels stretched, the central emotional thread remains compelling. Joe’s journey of self-reflection and potential redemption drives the film’s dramatic core, staying true to the spirit...

"Better Man" Leads the Aacta Nominations
Image
by Travis Cragg

Robbie Williams v. Furiosa v. Beloved Aussie Christmas Song v. Demon Possession. That’s the general gist of this year’s Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) film nominations. The satirical musical bio-pic Better Man achieved the most nominations (16), but Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and How To Make Gravy (15 each) and Late Night With The Devil (14) are not that far behind. The nomination total for Better Man is a record breaker, so the fact that three other films are very close to its indicates that the number of films that managed any nominations this year is low. There’s also a more significant artistic precedent that has been set this year amongst the acting nominees which we'll discus.

The list of nominations and comments after the jump…...

How to Make Gravy review – a well-intentioned, mawkish misfire
Paul Kelly
This soupy Christmas drama based on Paul Kelly’s song tips into corny sentimentalism – and comes dangerously close to suggesting that gravy is actually magic

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

How to Make Gravy is a rare example of a film that originated as a song – in this case, the beloved ballad by Paul Kelly. Maybe, given the entertainment industry’s addiction to recycling pre-existing IP, transforming popular tracks into movies will one day become a thing. Not that I’m looking forward to it: this soupy Christmas drama from first-time feature director Nick Waterman demonstrates how lyrics can become a series of reference points, with an obvious temptation to be very visual and literal – to give us that shot of a gravy boat being passed reverentially around the dinner table.

Waterman deploys the gravy early in the runtime, staging it as a moment of quasi-religious significance. This...

‘Inside the Kellyverse’: how Paul Kelly’s How to Make Gravy became a Christmas film
Meg Washington
Megan Washington and Hugo Weaving share how Kelly’s anthem inspired a ‘beautiful opportunity for redemption’, while Kelly reveals he’s ‘playing around with a sequel’ to his song

There’s a stunning sleight of hand to How to Make Gravy in that it’s almost impossible to pin the film down to an era. An earthy, 70s colour palette. The fashion and cars are 90s shabby. The backyard trestle table, tinselled up for Christmas lunch, and the screen doors, banging more insistently as the red wine flows, are perennial. Eventually I spot a vape, but the overall effect is to drench the brain with nostalgia.

Binge commissioned How to Make Gravy as its first original feature film, based on the 1996 Paul Kelly song of the same name. Its creators have been loyal to those early fans who vividly remember discovering the song...
