Strange and unpredictable- in the best ways.
daisychains0120 August 2023
Binged watched this in a day. With the way it started, I had no idea it would end up the way it did. Each episode got stranger and stranger, I had no idea what would come next or how the story would come to a cohesive end.

Insanely addictive though, loved the themes it explored, how attractiveness dictates how you get treated by others, stalking, obsession, toxic family dynamics and how that affects one's future...

It was quite dark too, without spoiling anything, a lot more graphic than I initially thought it would be. Each episode followed a certain character, at first I wasn't sure about this way of setting the story out- but I ended up enjoying it as it was something that I haven't seen done before.

Overall, if you like dark mini-series that explore heavy subjects, with a twinge of black comedy, I would recommend this for you.

As the time passed, my dreams faded away
alaningle721 August 2023
This is based on a webtoon and congratulations to the casting crew as they managed to get very similar actors to the characters. It is a story about a girl who has craved fame since childhood but because she does not meet the required standards of beauty of society she fails not only in her quest for fame but also her personal life. She comes up with the idea of wearing a mask in her internet videos and she becomes popular, but from this comes a downward spiral as her life falls into chaos. There are 3 actors who play mask girl and the timeline moves forward and back but is well worth sticking with it as it does have an unexpected twist. The series can move slow at times but once the pressure ramps up you are really tensed up until the end. Well written adaptation and superbly acted, very much worth a watch.

Dysfunction and Technology Are a Dangerous Combination!
spasek21 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This series serves as a reminder that people impel, but they do not compel, and that all actions have consequences. While people are not responsible for other people's actions, they do have influence, which is why it's important to understand that how we treat others is essential because it also reveals so much about ourselves.

This is a superficial world in which so many people seek adoration from outside of themselves. You don't need to look any further than today's social media and how it impacts people's lives. Look at Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and others which utilize and prey upon the insecurities of others. Eckhart Tolle may have said it best: Technology amplifies egoic dysfunction. In other words, it provides the means to keep dysfunctional behaviors going and make them even bigger.

Mask Girl is about a young woman, Kim Mo Mi, who has the talent and the physical attributes to possibly succeed in the entertainment industry, save for one: her facial features. She is quickly dubbed "ugly" by her classmates in school, all the way up to her job where she scarcely gets a second look from anyone, especially men. She finds a way to entertain without using her face. She wears a mask, performs through live webcams, and suddenly has the adoration she craves. Such superficial success often unlocks its own vile problems, as she finds herself the target of stalkers, sex addicts, and men who are as psychologically damaged as she is. People fail to realize that they often attract what they perceive in themselves. And Kim Mo Mi is soon caught up in a world of lies and murder.

Kim Kyung Ja could go down as one of the worst mothers. Her son is a recluse who spends all of his time online, dreaming of women he could never have. When he viciously rapes Kim Mo Mi and is killed for his trouble, Kim Kyung Ja turns into a vengeful, sadistic monster whose sole desire is to see Kim Mo Mi suffer and put to death. Her first attempt fails, and nearly at the cost of her own life. However, she finds a second chance by exploiting Kim Mo Mi's daughter, Kim Mi Mo, and using her to exact her own revenge: she will find a way to kill Kim Mi Mo and record the act on video. Stuck in prison for the murder of Kim Kyung Ja's son, Kim Mo Mi vows to do whatever it takes to save her daughter.

The series is told from the perspective of different characters, featuring them in their own episodes but correlating with the other characters and what has already transpired. We end up with the pitiful, misfit people society has cast aside like trash. People starving for attention and adoration to the point where plastic surgery is one of the focal points.

You may or may not be surprised to find out that 1 out of every 3 Korean women will have had some form of plastic surgery done before they are 30 years old. That's a staggering number, and the series demonstrates the extremes that people will go to for the smallest amount of attention.

What is truly sad is that, unless you find a way to love yourself, there isn't enough attention in the world to ever make you feel happy. It simply does not exist outside of yourself. Yet, the world has reached a point where attention and fame are so addictive and desired, that people will do anything for it. However, what they fail to realize is that all fame and glory are fleeting.

Now, this series may represent a somewhat extreme depiction of what is going on in the world, but it's actually not as far off as one might believe.

There are scarcely any truly "likable" characters in this series. They all represent degrees of indifference and dysfunction with Kim Kyung Ja being the most severe example of a person who has become so unhinged that she ends up truly being the monster of the story. I've seen Yeom Hye Ran (Kim Kyung Ja) in a number of series now, and this woman is a true genius as a character actor. She never fails to disappoint.

I will say that the last episode is a bit over-the-top when toning it down would have served the story better. It got just a bit ridiculous and unrealistic, but overall, it didn't hurt the story very much, and we already get a sense of how it would ultimately end.

It's of the utmost importance for people to learn how to love themselves and not be so caught up in what other people think. It's also important treat others with dignity and respect, for we never know how our actions may cause a person to respond. In other words, don't poke the cat. You may find that you've poked the cat and ended up with a tiger coming at you as a few characters in this story found out the hard way.

Masterful Adaptation of Korean Webtoon
anarinsk20 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's based on a Korean webtoon, but it's fleshed out well. The first thing you'll notice is its organization and design. Each of the main characters is the focus of each episode, but their stories are organically connected. It's fun to see them intertwine in time and space.

Next, there's the casting. The main character, Kim Momi, is played by three different actors. Momi, an ordinary office worker, Momi, an escapee, and an inmate, are well connected. This is something that hasn't been done in the original webtoons. The director/writer Kim Yong-hun have done masterfully.

What makes the series most appealing is the art direction of Ryu Sung-hee. She has shown her skill in several of Park Chan-wook's films ("Oldboy," "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," "Decision to Leave," etc.), and this series is no exception. It subtly reflects the change of the times, the change in the air, and the emotions of the characters from 2009 to 2023. Simply amazing.

It's basically a revenge drama that reminds me of Park Chan-wook's "The Kindness of Geum-ja" in that it's a very nasty revenge drama, but it has a unique color and story. The grueling 'revenge' of two mothers to protect their children or to get the price of their lost children's lives is fascinating, and the actors portrayed it quite well.

Well that did not go where I thought it would
droper-5566718 August 2023
It hits on a lot of things to reflect on which I liked. Dark side of obsession in so many forms really. The actors did a good job, the fact it is dubbed was nice as well.

It is pretty dark and brutal. Kind of over the top really. Prepare for a wild trip driven by the thoughtless traumatizing and traumatized spiralling everyone into the abyss.

It was a perspective I found sobering really. Some real pervs in this one. The online camming was really the least interesting part of the series which is what I thought it was going to be about. You will not guess where this goes, you just have to watch the entire thing.

Looks are everything!
christineballone20 August 2023
Yesterday I finished " Kingdom" and was pretty disturbed by it and next thing I know I'm watching another Korean thriller equally dark and disturbing! I've come to the conclusion that the Koreans are masters in dark thrillers and comedies!

Mask Girl will draw in all the people who ever suffered bullying and wished they could fight back but don't!

It also shows that no matter what , even getting plastic surgery to be more beautiful doesn't take away your troubles because your mind is still unchanged!

In these social media times we are in now the pursuit of perfection it relentless and destroying our young people!

The first episode is the starting point that leads into others becoming darker and darker ( and bloodier) while we are emphasizing with the characters. At times I'm having troubles telling the protagonists apart because they look so alike which is also a reminder to me of how alike and monotonous beauty images are on line and in the media nowadays!

The actors are very good in portraying pain, fear and misery ! Many of us have been in that dark place including me and therefore I understand the premise of this story ( to a certain extent of course but the violence and payback makes it more fun)!

I'm watching with original audio and English subtitles which makes it more authentic! I've become so good at doing this that I rarely Miss anything!

Highly recommend this series! A word of caution: the assault scenes are not for the faint of heart but are portrayed very truthfully!

Emotional rollercoaster! 😆😳😡😍😱
zorhain19 August 2023
We really were not expecting this. Described as a 'Dark comedy' which probably the first few episodes were, but then it went into full thriller mode with high school and prison drama.

I can understand the 18 rating with graphic violence and lots of blood but thankfully not so graphic sexual acts.

Definitely not for children. There's revenge, self discovery, bullying, misogyny, bullying, loneliness, betrayal, parental relationships and society's judgemental attitude's especially online.

Good character building and direction with back stories given black & white treatment or year subtitled. Script and storyline is pretty good with unexpected twists but some scenes needs reality check like many horror or thrillers.

One of the best K-dramas to date.

Starts as something special, but ends as something stale 6.5/10
Snownoise19 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I basically didn't know anything about the show. I only watched it because it was popped up in my notification when I opened netflix. I don't watch a lot of kdrama, but from the first episode, this show came off as not another usual kdrama. It was very unique. The first and the second episode are very interesting and intriguing. The show's theme appeared to be the social commentary of lookim in south korea which also gave the opportunity to hire right actors for the show instead of typical handsome and beautiful actors in usual kdramas. I was giving 11 out of 10 so far. However, the premise that I was assuming fell through very quickly after the second episode. From the third episode, the show became a "typical" korean revenge drama. It was quite disappointing since the tone of the show was completely changed early. It could have been nicer if they have maintained the uniqueness to the end, but they seemed to have run into the common moral dilemma such as "there will be consequences". I've seen some korean dramas and movies that start strongly, but end generically. For obvious reasons, those shows never get picked up by many.

"Mask Girl": A Work of Uniqueness and Depth
Mentalisttt18 August 2023
Yo, fellow binge-watchers!

Just want to share my thoughts on this Netflix gem - "Mask Girl." Trust me, this show isn't just your regular popcorn entertainment - it's like a rollercoaster ride for your feels!

Each episode is like a whole new plot, from office craziness to family stuff and a bit of dark humor. But here's the kicker: every character's the star of their own show. You see their side of things.

But what sets "Mask Girl" apart? It's the crazy uniqueness. This ain't your run-of-the-mill show,. It's like a mix of dark and gritty, with Twists. And the way they blend it all? Mind-blowing. Kudos to the writer for coming up with this twisted, mind-boggling concept.

Good, but...
Rosiechuchu29 August 2023
I'm a bit conflicted by this series. I also watched this without knowing what to expect, and was so surprised by the dark turns and twists. You keep watching because you want to know what will happen. But at the same time there's something missing. Acting is good.

All the characters are unlikeable, some more than others, so you don't care much for anyone, you became a witness of the story, but not really connected to anyone, at least the first 4/5 episodes.

Some back stories unnecessary, and some things that are very important, are not show at all.

The big problem is that we are left with many unanswered questions.

Some things are not believable and the more i think about it, more ridiculous it is.

Maybe this is supposed to be 100% true to the webtoon, but i think it could be much better with some changes.

Somewhere between Parasites and Black mirror
mari-3998819 August 2023
It's very unusual series.

At first I wanted to quit watching halfway through the second episode. But I continued to watch and my opinion completely changed. Each series is a separate chapter, revealing one of the characters, and together they are intertwined into one crazy story.

If you like tough social dramas with a hint of bloody madness, good twists and cool actors, then this series is for you) in my opinion, the series is comparable in impressions with the Parasites, I rarely see something so ambiguous and interesting. The more I think about my viewing experience for writing this review, the more I like it. I will definitely watch it a second time.

Ps this review was written using google translate as english is not my native language.

It wasn't bad, but wasn't good
egyptian_beauty8624 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't have any expectations for the series, however, after the first episode I really thought it would be something special- sadly, it wasn't.

The original Kim Mo-mi was well cast, but her transformation afterwards just wasn't believable, in my opinion. I kept wondering why they chose the actress (Nana) who became Kim Mo-mi post-surgery, instead of the actress who played her friend, Kim Chun-Ae. She had very similar bone structure and features and would have been a far better choice in terms of casting Kim Mo-mi.

Other than that, I really felt like the story fell flat after episode 3, and I kept hoping it would pick up, but it just didn't.

As my title suggests, it wasn't a bad show, but it wasn't a good one either.

Starts off very well, becomes stale and they throw it off the window 6/10
GrumpyMelon30 August 2023
Being a fan of K-drama and revenge stories this show had me interested from the beginning! It seemed as though they got it right with some interesting twists along the way. Then, halfway through, the writing started to look lazy and clinging to all the clichés. On top of that, the show started to drag itself with some "plot" being added that was completely superfluous to the end game. Not to spoil anything but the way they made it about a silly everlasting, tougher, holier than thou character and her search for the ultimate revenge... (Whilst becoming an expert with guns, crime, bribes, etc... Some kind of supper granny of evil...) Well, let's just say the potential was huge. It started off nicely and it could've been one of the most interesting recent shows with a not so subtle criticism of social/beauty standards in South Korea. But it became stale and cursed with poor writing and trying to "surprise" you, when in fact it became so predictable. Worth it up to episode 4 or so. It won't hurt to watch the entire show. But if you're picky, best skip this one, some other shows out there are more worthy of your time.

Unexpected twists and turns
stevenmortonuk20 August 2023
This is another great Korean drama that is worth your time.

I had no idea what the story was going to be about and even as I was watching the show, I could not predict where the story would go.

I don't want to give too much away, but each episode is a unique point of view that progresses the plot and keeps the show fresh and unique.

The last couple of episodes bring to mind the early work of Park Chan Wook, which is never a bad thing.

I wish the US made shows like this, but it seems like Korea is producing far more interesting tv shows than the US.

I'd also advise watching it with subtitles rather than overdubs. The overdubs are never as good.

WAUW, just unbelievably good!
NikitaHoog22 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am litterly addicted!

They even thought about the little things... although one little thing i did not really liked was that the first Mo-Mi was really tall, the second one had plastic surgery... Yes ok, no problem, but she looked a lot shorter, still plastic surgery, so the idea of it... i get it. Then in prison? What happend... i mean getting beat up will give changes, but i think this was too much.

But... the emotions... the acting is surreal. And did not gave me a real annoyed feeling about it. I knew who still knew that was Mo-Mi. I think the actors really nailed this one.

I wish it was a endless serie or something like every season a new story. Because i cannot get enough!

Furthermore the crew and cast are at the top for me. I cannot express enough how emotions ran so high, it felt just like a real story. I got sucked right in! Unpredictable as hell, Perfection!

The ending was beautiful and still super unpredictable.

I loved it!

Thank you all for this masterpiece!

Bittersweet
aliceisangry21 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Overall a really dark but engaging drama. It really tugs at one's heartstrings which makes the ending that much more frustrating.

I thought that the overall plot was an interesting take on societal issues surrounding the objectification of online personas, beauty standards, and the judicial treatment of women using self defense. But shortly into the series it strayed from this focus to one of undeserved revenge on the main character from one of her assailant's mothers.

Each episode focuses on the perspective and background of a different character that is involved in the overarching plotline. It adds layers to what could have been a very straight forward story.

I will say that if you want to feel satisfied and fulfilled after finishing a series, this is not the show for you. Instead this drama will leave you feeling melancholy from the outright lack of any form of justice for the main character.

Would I watch it again? Probably not.

But do I think it was worth the first watch? Absolutely.

Warning: Spoilers
Am I the only one waiting for Kim Mo Mi to tell Joo Oh Nam's mother that Kim Mi Mo is her grand daughter??????? 😂😂😂😂😂

Until the last scene of Joo Oh Nam's mother, I'm still curious, what if Kim Mo Mi said that Kim Mi Mo was her grand daughter. I wonder what will happened. I guess the story will end differently 😁😁😁😁😁.

Anyway, Mask Girl is one of the best korean dramas i've ever watched. I looked for the director of the series and it turned out he was Kim Yong Hoon. You guys have to watch his film Beasts Clawing at Straws. I recommend it.

These are fact that i copied from Asian Wiki; 1. Based on webcomic "Mask Girl" by Mae Mi (published from August 15, 2015 to June 9, 2018 via Naver.).

2. Lee Han-Byul was selected to play Kim Mo-Mi after participating in an audition with around 1,000 other actresses. "Mask Girl" is her first acting role

I found Nana who played Kim Mo Mi (after surgery) was really familiar and it turned out she is a former member of After School (girlband from South Korea) 😂😂

Not bad but how can anyone buy that she's ugly !!
mpboylanjr-5403821 August 2023
The show is interesting so far a few episodes through but is anybody really buying that this chick is some hideous monster ? I mean she's extremely pretty with a great body and supposed to be smart with a good job. Where is the undesirable parts about her.? I understand they needed to get someone and I guess she doesn't look like the prototypical Asian girl (again I don't see it) . The looks aside of the main actress it is pretty funny and is definitely not some of the real garbage Netflix has been putting out lately and passing for series. I'll stick around and stay put for the rest but man is she so not ugly .

Very interesting show
subrip24 August 2023
The show isn't 100% amazing but it was a really fun and interesting watch. I watched the whole show in one sitting and wouldn't have minded if it was longer. I enjoyed it a lot.

The cast for this show is no joke, each actor has shown a different side of acting from their previous works. Even the new actress Lee Han Byeol did a fantastic job. Really hope to see more of her acting.

Nana!!!! Omg every scene of hers had me shocked especially enjoyed the prison scenes whens she lost it with anger. The way the show was laid out over the course of mask girls life was fantastic. I would definitely recommend this show, it's worth the hype.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance 2023
soeprijo1928 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Major Spoiler Ahead!

A girl has a dream to be a star since her childhood, but the road wasn't that smooth. She can sing. She can dance. But her face wasn't pretty enough. So her dream faded day by day, until she became a white collar worker. Her name was Kim Mo Mi.

But internet era brought up some new uncharted opportunities. Kim Mo Mi became Mask Girl. A mysterious dancer and singer on the internet with her mask on. Many men fell for her, because of her perfect body and intimate behaviour online. And that's when the storm coming in.

This series wasn't mean for the faint of heart. It showed many dark sides of the society and evil faces of human being. Rape, torture, bullying, mutilation, murder, rejection, human trafficking, destructive gossips, affairs, corruption, you name it what the worst could a person possibly does and you will find it here.

Kudos to the actress who played Kim Mo Mi: Lee Han Byeol (this was her debut), Im Jin Ah (Nana saranghae) and the perfect Go Hyun Jung. And my special compliment to Yeom Hye Ran. After her special appearance on The Glory series, she shone brightly again in Mask Girl. Her devilish character was so tangible that I felt a chill down my spine every time she appeared on the screen.

So, after all that many compliments, why only 7/10?! Because the last 20 minutes ruined it. I could forgive two junior high school girls who still have time to cry and hugging each other in time of crisis, but Kim Mo Mi who didn't finish off her nemesis for the second time really didn't make any sense. Kim Mo Mi already sentenced for live, so killing one more person would made no difference at all. And all those special force policemen that pointed the riffle, did no one has the ability to shoot the arms or fingers of an old lady to stop her before she could do any damage?! Really?!

I know the director/script writers wanted to stay true to its source, but adaptation doesn't have to be 100 percent exactly the same as its source. However, this is a good series and you won't be disappointed watching it.

Thrilling 7/10.

Different
lateriaseck22 September 2023
At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to watch this, but the first episode really got me hooked. I like that. There are so many things to watch now, the first episode really needs to grab your attention. It was creepy fun goodness from the beginning. However, it did take a shift and it was so very feminist. I think feminism is different for every culture, but after seeing what these women went through I couldn't help but to root for them. I could also understand every single viewpoint and so i wasn't rooting for everyone at the same time. The one thing that is true about being the type of mother I am, is that I am always going to root for my child. The thing about my mother that I have realized is that she shows my children, her grandchildren, a different type of love that I have never seen before. Again, this is a very female motivating show and I loved it.

Very good, but some annoying parts
hello-0347816 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this show. The characters had interesting things to do, their motivations were mostly clear. The cinematography was great, conveying different perspectives of each character. The humour in the first few episodes was also very subtle and enjoyable.

It was novel to have a mother become an amateur detective to find her son, then eventually become an evil granny. I liked the scene of her trying to use the computer for the first time, then taking computer classes and begin making online friends and using online language.

The last few episodes (set in 2023) were less enjoyable to me. The characters seemed to get crazier over the years and harder to understand I guess. And there was a few important plot points that were surprisingly never addressed...

Mask Girl never calling her daughter for 15 years? The granny never finds out that her son raped mask girl? And that the girl she's ready to kill is actually her grand daughter??? Those would have been interesting scenes and are missed opportunities for character's to deal with... instead we get a cliche violent battle to the death at the end of the last episode that wasn't very interesting...

There's also a strange decision the director made that didn't sit well with me. Mi Mo's friend is shown saying that "Mi Mo's mother is mask girl" to her bully, so the audience sees the betrayal. Then in a later flashback it's shown that she didn't betray her trust, and that it was the granny who spread the rumour. This means the scene we were shown didn't happen and the story effectively lied to the audience... which seemed pointlessly annoying

Anyway, I still loved the show, writing was pretty good, and am always impressed by Korean drama. Definitely recommended for those who like novel psychological movies with interesting plots (think Old Boy, Parasite)

There is no mystery here but the drama is ok somewhat !
hanhoun26 August 2023
First two episodes are impressive , edge of your seat knowing something bad is going to happen, a poignant and very strong character driven mystery/drama ! By the end of the second episode a major twist. Episode 3 they start to expand on the POV of various characters which continues up to the episode before last and that is when I started to lose interest . Starting from episode 3 to 6 it became more of a soap opera drama with so many storylines that were put there to prolong the series and I got so bored and started to hit the forward button , too bad because it had potential. An ok drama but there are much better mystery/thriller shows out there !

Mask Girl
Tweekums4 October 2023
As a child Kim Mo-mi dreamt of being a singer, but her mother told her that she'd have no chance thanks to her looks. At school she is bullied and she eventually ends up working in an office. However she hasn't given up on her dream. She dons a mask and wig and starts performing on an internet live-stream. Initially things go well enough but a meeting with one of her fans leads to an event that will change her life, and that of many around her, forever. Each episode is centred on a different person who is somehow affected; many of them won't survive.

If you enjoy K-drama and are looking for something that is fairly dark in tone but still has some humour then this is definitely something you might want to watch. The way each episode is centred on a different character is very effective; often showing the same events from a different perspective before advancing the plot. The cast does a fine job making the characters believable even when things get more melodramatic. The final episode wraps things up nicely so viewers won't be left hoping for another season to get a conclusion. Overall I'd certainly recommend this.

These comments are based on watching the series in Korean with English subtitles.

Coen Brothers + Kim ki duk
camlan-3644823 August 2023
It has elements like a Coen Brothers plot as well drawing to a specific movie by Kim Kiduk's Spring Summer Fall Winter Spring. The cycle of life, death, hatred and revenge. Characters who are socilly isolated, neglected, loveless, rejected are turned to be vicious in order to survive. Acting and story line are engaging. Plot twists and but not too shocking surprises. Similar story telling like the recent Beef from Netflix or also similar like Breaking Bad where lots of back story for each characters are evolving. Each episodes develops with each charaters and cummulating to the episode climax.
