As we move closer to the end of 2024, now is the perfect time to look back at some of the worst shows of the year. It has been a fruitful year for TV watchers, particularly those who prefer to stream their series. We’ve seen an interesting mix of new shows and the anticipated return of old favorites. Still, this doesn’t mean they have all been winners.
Before we share which shows have been the most disappointing, let’s give recognition to some of the many series we’ve enjoyed the most. At the top of my list, I have Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Hulu’s The Bear season 3. I know Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also received a lot of attention, as well as the returning Prime Video favorite, The Boys with season 4. Which shows have made it to your favorites list so far?...

It was no small feat to get “Saturday Night Live” off the ground at NBC, and as a result, the cast of “Saturday Night” is pretty huge. In many cases, the actors also look eerily similar to the people they’re playing.
Hitting theaters everywhere on Oct. 11 after a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” tells the story of the 90 minutes right before the first-ever episode of “SNL.” It’s chaotic and at the time, even Lorne Michaels couldn’t explain what the show was going to be.
Below, you’ll find the cast of “Saturday Night” alongside what their real-life counterparts looked like back then.

Lorne Michaels is the creator and, to this day, producer of “Saturday Night Live.” He’s played in “Saturday Night” by Gabriel Labelle, who had his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.

Fresh off the premiere of its new Fox drama “Murder in a Small Town,” Jeff Wachtel’s Future Shack Entertainment shingle is ramping up its development slate — next via a first-look pact with Daily Beast chief content officer Joanna Coles. Future Shack and Coles have multiple projects in development, including a take on MSNBC anchor Katy Tur’s memoir “Rough Draft.”
Wachtel and Coles are also shopping the drama “Base Camp,” which looks at the crowded — and dangerous — queue to get to the top of Mt. Everest. Playwright and screenwriter Anchuli Felicia King is the scribe behind that project.
Additionally, Future Shack and Coles have two more scripts in the works at 20th Television. In honor of Nicholas Galitzine‘s 30th birthday on September 29, 2024, let’s celebrate his fashion style by revisiting many of his red carpet looks in our new photo gallery (see below). The English actor achieved super-stardom when he appeared in Prime Video’s 2023 telefilm “Red, White & Royal Blue,” which received an Emmy nomination for Best TV Movie. A sequel to the queer romantic comedy has been ordered, with Galitzine returning as Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez back as First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz.
Galitzine is also known for playing Jeff in “Bottoms” (2023), Luke in “Purple Hearts” (2022) and Prince Robert in “Cinderella” (2021). More recently, the actor starred as George Villiers in “Mary & George” (2024) and as Hayes Campbell in “The Idea of You” (2024). Ever since he appeared in the Netflix original movie "Purple Hearts" in 2022, British actor Nicholas Galitzine has become a major breakout star ... but that doesn't mean he aced all of his early auditions. In fact, he says one of those auditions was so awful that he still cringes just thinking about it.
During a roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2024 — which also featured Jon Hamm ("Fargo"), Matt Bomer ("Fellow Travelers"), Clive Owen ("A Murder at the End of the World"), Callum Turner ("Masters of the Air"), and David Oyelowo ("Lawmen: Bass Reeves") — Galitzine and his contemporaries started talking about auditions, and despite being one of the youngest performers at the table, Galitzine had a lot to say. After the others shared some stories, THR brought up Galitzine's recent film "The Idea of You" and the fact that his co-star Anne Hathaway said he could have "chemistry with a lamp,...

The live-action version of Masters of the Universe locked Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man in May after being stuck in development hell for years. The film adaptation found a home at Amazon MGM Studios after both Sony and Netflix passed over the film. The latest update from the film has confirmed Riverdale fame Camila Mendes in the role of Teela, the Captain of the Royal Guard.

In the third episode of the Starz limited series “Mary & George,” Julianne Moore’s Mary, Countess of Buckingham, who is hell-bent on amassing power among the royal ranks, makes her first visit to the court of King James I (Tony Curran). When she arrives in a garish purple silk gown, her face painted a ghastly white and cheeks crudely rouged like a clown, the courtiers point and laugh. Absorbing their scornful looks, she makes her way to Lady Hatton, a formidable adversary played by Nicola Walker, who quips, “Who dressed you? A prostitute?”
Well, yes, in fact.

In an earlier scene, we see Mary’s sex worker confidante Sandie (Niamh Algar) help her get into costume. Mary is no fool. Though it’s never spelled out explicitly, it is strongly suggested that she plotted her fashion faux pas to attract the attention of the king...

The “House of the Dragon” Season 2 finale gave viewers a sneak peek at Prince Daeron Targaryen, and we’ll be seeing a lot more of the as-of-now-unseen third brother when the “Game of Thrones” spin-off series returns.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

When Devon tracks her sister down to say Wtf, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. What a time for fans of TV shows that fall under the umbrella of “History, But Make It Cheeky.” Series such as Mary & George, The Buccaneers, The Great, The Serpent Queen, and Harlots have made themselves right at home en masse, dramatizing both obscure and well-known stories for contemporary audiences. When executed well, they offer a sprightly, self-aware counterpoint to traditional, deeply earnest costume dramas; think of them as scions of the marriage between Masterpiece Theatre and A Knight’s Tale.

“Bridgerton” star Florence Hunt, Jim Sturgess and Australia’s Teresa Palmer have joined the cast of “Mix Tape,” a music-themed drama series. The Australian-Irish co-production shot in Sydney in May and is now underway in Dublin.
The series is adapted by Irish writer Jo Spain from the popular and critically-acclaimed novel of the same title by Jane Sanderson. It is directed by Australia’s Lucy Gaffy.
“’Mix Tape’ will take viewers back in time to that intoxicating feeling of first love [and be] a classic all-encompassing romance set to a banging nostalgic soundtrack,” said producers.
The series is produced by Subotica and Aquarius Films, with Boat Rocker overseeing international distribution. In Australia, it will play on Binge, a streaming service operated by local market pay-tv leader Foxtel.

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

A lot of the work of making a great TV show is done in the casting. Characters with compelling, dynamic relationships are ultimately a huge part of what keeps our attention on the big or the small screen. So, given that Emmy voting has just begun, IndieWire wanted to reach out to some of television’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this past year.
Not so unlike seeing 10 great, different actors give 10 great, different interpretations of a role and then somehow having to pick just one, the casting directors who responded to us were quick to point out how many shows have made revelatory casting choices in the last year. “Baby Reindeer,” “Eric,” “Only Murders In The Building,” “Shogun,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” all received warm praise in multiple email threads about our casting directors’ choices, and luckily, most of...

Julianne Moore seems to be having a blast in limited series “Mary & George” (Starz). But carrying a seven-part period royal dramedy is not easy. The Oscar-winning film actress (“Still Alice”) rarely does television (“Lisey’s Story”) — she started her career as a regular on “As the World Turns” — but Mary Villiers, the Machiavellian court-scheming mother of the series, was irresistible.
Moore was attracted to showrunner D.C. Moore’s scripts, she said during a recent interview with IndieWire over Zoom. “That very first scene where you find her giving birth to this child and saying, ‘Why should I keep you? Your life’s gonna be worthless?’ was arresting,” Moore said.
“The character leapt off the page,” she continued. “This person who didn’t seem to have any kind of filter at all. She speaks everything that she’s feeling, which is unusual. It had this tone to it that was almost comedic at times,...

Exclusive: Studiocanal, The Picture Company, Entertainment 360 & Zaftig Films are out to buyers on a TV series based on the acclaimed 2021 documentary The Lost Leonardo, about how a crumbling painting depicting Christy in the Renaissance called The Salvador Mundi was restored and found to possibly be the final work of Leonardo Da Vinci around the time the master painter did the Mona Lisa. Juliane Moore will star as Dianne Modestini, an art restorer who saw something special in the painting, and painstakingly restored it. She and everyone else were surprised to watch it go from a $1000 estate sale item to the priciest painting ever bought, fetching $450 million by the time the auctioneer banged the gavel at the New York auction house Christie’s.
In between the restoration and sale, there were numerous mysterious twists, turns and controversies from the underbelly of the fine art world. But it all started with...

“I did a play years ago called ‘Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off,’ about Mary Queen of Scots, who was King James’ mother,” reveals BAFTA nominee Tony Curran, who plays King James I in the Starz Limited series “Mary and George.” “In that play I played King James’ father, Lord Darnley, who got assassinated, got blown up. So, I knew a bit about his history. He never really had a mother because she was taken away by Queen Elizabeth when he was a baby and she was imprisoned before she was executed. Having your mother decapitated and your father assassinated, it was a bit of a tough start for old King James.”

There’s a sexier side to the story of King James I in D.C. Moore’s “Mary & George,” a psychological drama on Starz where the titular mother (Julianne Moore) and her son (Nicholas Galitzine) deceive, lie, and fornicate their way to becoming one of the most powerful families of the 17th century. The brilliance of the bingeable series is how it blends the history of the British royals with modern touches to craft a visual tapestry that’s equal parts eloquence and seduction. “When I read the scripts, what I loved was the tone,” said cinematographer Alexander Dynan. “It’s different than any other period piece and it felt like it could really appeal to a contemporary audience.”

Turns out, the one thing everybody gathered for The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Drama Actor Emmy roundtable has in common is the fact that they’ve all lied to land a job.
“All the time,” jokes Nicholas Galitzine, of both Starz’s Mary & George and Prime Video’s Red, White & Royal Blue, when the question is first posed.
Fellow Travelers‘ Matt Bomer is similarly quick to confess. “I absolutely figure skate, I play ice hockey. Rollerblade. Yes, years of experience,” he says through laughter.
The lies vary, of course; as do the consequences. But all six of the men gathered on this April afternoon at the Georgian Hotel cop to at least one lie — and perhaps unsurprisingly, it rarely ended well. Clive Owens (Monsieur Spade, A Murder at the End of the World) said he could ride a horse — a lie that came back to bite him when...

Every casting director auditioning Brits in their 20s has Nicholas Galitzine and Leo Woodall on their wish list these days, as evidenced by the fact that both have auditioned for roles that ended up going to the other. This conversation — about Galitzine’s “Mary & George,” the Starz series about George Villiers’ affair with King James I, and Netflix’s “One Day,” starring Woodall as Dexter, who falls in love with his best friend over two decades — marks their first time meeting in person. The heartthrobs’ rapport is immediate, thanks to Instagram DMs they’ve already shared about how, as Galitzine puts it, “a lot of acting prep is very pretentious and twat-y.”
Nicholas Galitzine: We just found out that we support rival football teams.
Leo Woodall: We already kind of hate each other.
Galitzine: The fact that you support Chelsea tells me a lot about who you are as a person.

Over the past few years, the period drama genre has experienced a true renaissance on both streaming platforms and broadcast television. Those who have always loved these shows have had the time of their lives getting into the new titles, and those who never paid too much attention to them may find themselves drawn into the obsession.
If you haven't watched many period dramas and want to see some that are fun to watch and feel relatable, check out the list of 8 most beginner-friendly shows below and see what the genre has to offer.
Harlots (2017-2019)
One of the aspects of life that many shows only briefly touch on is the way aristocrats treated the prostitutes they visited. Harlots focuses on them and follows Margaret Wells, a woman who runs a brothel in 18th century London and does everything in her power to ensure a better future for her own daughters.

Dana Strong, CEO of Comcast-owned Sky Group has promised customers of the U.K. media conglomerate will continue to receive Warner Bros Discovery content on Sky platforms, saying that discussions with the studio to extend their content agreement are ongoing.
“We’ve been a partner with Warner for a very long time,” said Strong, adding that they’re “in conversation” about the future of their deal.
The deal, which primarily covers HBO content such as “Succession” and “And Just Like That,” is set to expire next year. Comcast-owned European pay-tv, media and telecom giant Sky has made a full-court press to lock down sports rights longer-term due to the benefits of sports content, CEO Dana Strong told a London conference on Tuesday.
During a fireside chat at Deloitte’s Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference, she was asked about Sky’s sports strategy. “I am pretty passionate about sport,” and Sky has “extraordinary strength” in the field, she said.
About 18-24 months ago, “we really decided to double down and go long on sport,” Strong shared. That has helped build “a strategic moat” around sports, she said. “Sport matters because it is resilient,” more so than other forms of linear TV. It matters to consumers and communities, she added.
Also, “we have a very, very sophisticated monetization machine for sport,” including pay-tv and streaming, Strong also argued. “Sky likes to be culturally relevant” and be part of “moments,...

France has never had trouble getting people to fall in love with its many pleasures: the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, and the island majesty of Mont Saint-Michel. It sells itself, which is probably why it is such a sought-after backdrop for television series.
But in the last year, France has been shown even more love than usual, as more than half a dozen shows, all vying for Emmy attention this season, explored the country through the ages. And no, this wasn’t some elaborate promotion for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
From the 1600s to the modern day to a post-zombie apocalypse future, no cultural stone went unturned on TV this year, giving viewers even more reason to book their next (hopefully zombie-free) vacation.

From the 1600s to the modern day to a post-zombie apocalypse future, no cultural stone went unturned on TV this year, giving viewers even more reason to book their next (hopefully zombie-free) vacation.

There is a wealth of period costumes cross the categories for Emmy voters to think about this season.
In limited series, Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood built 200 to 300 leather jackets for AppleTV+’s World War II drama “Masters of the Air.” “It took six months to get them built,” Atwood says. Procuring the right elements was a global process that included getting era-specific zippers from Japan and sheepskin from Scotland and England.
Atwood also explained the unconventional aging process of the garments, saying that “once they were built, we had to shear the inside so they weren’t as thick, and then we put them in a vat of rocks inside a cement mixer to beat the leather up.”
“Shōgun” (now competing in drama series) costume designer Carlos Rosario built over 2,000 costumes for the 10-part show set in feudal Japan.

Before landing his latest big role as He-Man in the live-action Masters of the Universe movie from Amazon MGM and Mattel, actor Nicholas Galitzine took on a slew of roles in projects that happened to come out pretty close together. If you’re wondering where you’ve seen him before, it may have been alongside Camila Cabello in Prime Video’s Cinderella (2021), as a different royal Prince Henry in the adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s Red White & Royal Blue (2023) with the streamer or even as Harry Styles-inspired Hayes Cambell of the boyband August Moon in his latest flick The Idea of You (2024) alongside Anne Hathaway.
The actor has done most of his popular projects with Amazon MGM, but he also appeared as serious Marine Luke in Netflix’s Purple Hearts (2022) alongside Sofia Carson, and he played antagonist football player Jeff in Emma Seligman’s Bottoms (2023). For his small-screen work,...
