A great episode
Sleepin_Dragon16 August 2018
I have to be honest I look at this time in Death in Paradise's history as one of its best spells. After a successful first series, everyone has settled brilliantly into their roles, and the writing just got better and better.

The fact that they were able to attract Stephanie Beacham, James Cosmo and Tom Ward is no accident, over 8 million tuned in to watch it.

I really like the story, as light as it is in parts, it's very well balanced with a much darker side, the topic of slavery in the Carribbean.

Exciting, dramatic and clever, a classic episode. 9/10

A great "Death in paradise" episode!

Warning: Spoilers
To start right off with this review, "Murder on the Plantation" did not disappoint in any way. To be honest, it's easily the best "Death in Paradise" entry, what I have seen so far.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The direction's full of energy and music fits the scenery. The acting is very good too. James Cosmo is enjoyable in his little screen time. Stephanie Beacham and Tom Ward are particularly good in their roles.

. The murder mystery of this episode is full of twists and turns. It has welcome humor, satisfying solution (motive for murder is a sweet old revenge) and intriguing characters.

But..

. I had only one issue with "Murder on the Plantation". It's the fact that couple of small mysteries surrounding the murder were too easily solved. The previous reviewer has rightfully mentioned the secret tunnel getaway, which felt a bit lazy way to wrap everything up. Also, the significance of a piece of glass was too early solved.

Overall, a great if not perfect episode.

Killed by a machete this time. It's been a while since anyone was murdered with a spear gun.

Contrived and unimaginable.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the things I love most about Death in Paradise is it's similarity to Jonathan Creek - that is, focusing on a single, baffling mystery, and revealing it to have a simple yet unseen answer. This episode failed on that front.

Firstly, the 'JOH' at the crime scene. The officers seemed adamant that the victim must've wrote it, rather than the killer to put blame on Dr Johnson. Next, the resolution of the name was plain and boring - it wasn't JOH in 'Johnson', but JOH in 'Johan'. Exchanging it from one name to a very similar name was a dull move, that wasn't up to the par of the series thus far.

Similarly, Poole was certain that the glass shard came from a torch, which flew directly in the face of all evidence, rather than, say, a pair of glasses, or a bottle. Why? For plot, of course!

The other resolution of the tunnels was ultimately redundant - why would the escape tunnel lead to the mill? Not to mention the vanishing girl every time the plot lulled, and the rather obvious legend of the plantation.

Overall, a disappointing start to the series.
