Average rom-com fare
barbett-11 January 2024
Neither brilliant nor dreadful, "Anyone But You" features a cast of characters that are unbelievably attractive and, apparently, insanely wealthy. It stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeny's breasts in the formulatic equivalent of a Hallmark Movie knock-off. You know the drill - two perfect young people meet, are instantly attracted to each other, are separated by a misunderstanding with hilarious hijinks ensuing. The misunderstanding is eventually resolved, love blooms once more, and all ends well.

What sets this film apart is excellent cinematography with lovely wide-angle views of the Australian countryside. The supporting cast is very capable although the Australian men are played as oafish stereotypes. Glen Powell plays his part well, but Sydney Sweeny appears to be reading her lines from a teleprompter offscreen. Not the worst movie out this holiday season and enjoyable as long as you refrain from high expectations.

Another cheesy romcom... Yum!
ivantheeditor21 April 2024
They really did make a whole movie just to show off Glen Powell's smoking hot body and honestly - I'm here for it!

The storyline and the acting is... wait, who cares?? Glen Powell is shirtless about half the time.

This is a movie about two people who fall in love only to find out that... Glen Powell's body is so hot!

If you watch the trailer you already know exactly what happ... Glen Powell!!

The predictability factor is super strong with this one. The cheese is sprinkled all over the movie, in every scene, there is little room left for any other ingredients because... cheese. And Glen Powell.

Glen Powell.

It's exactly what you expect
miza00422 December 2023
This movie is exactly what I thought it would be so I can't complain too much.

The two leads are both very attractive and have good chemistry, so that was entertaining to watch and nice on the eyes. It had some cute scenes. I gotta say the ensemble was pretty good if I laughed it was always because something one of them said. They were a bunch of goofy characters. I also enjoyed dermot mulroney's character when he was learning how to dive and the reoccurance of that at the end of the movie. It made me giggle.

But I gotta say... the dialogue was very mediocre and at times just not good at all. It just lacked depth which again didn't expect it to have depth but still could have been better.

Ridiculous and charming...but not ridiculously charming
cliftonofun27 April 2024
This movie was anything but consistent. Some scenes were ridiculously endearing, some were ridiculously annoying, some were ridiculously laughable, and some were just ridiculous. (I think the one commonality is self evident.) Gluck clearly wanted to bring back the big budget RomCom and update Shakespeare all at once - the movie version of a genre novel that leans all the way into all the tropes, but is smart enough to make good literary references along the way. Much like with any somewhat self aware story, there were times when the camera winks amused me and times when they had the opposite effect. Regardless, there is no denying that Powell and Sweeney make the most of every scene. Even if it never fully comes together for you, I bet you will still find yourself at least a little charmed.

The most predictable, generic and cliche movie humanly posible, also full of an unbelievable amount ofconviniences.
jaam-1057122 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a man and I was dragged to see this movie by my female friends. I didn't want to see it because it looked like one of the most generic, predictable and cliché movie I have ever seen...and I was right. I wasn't expecting an art piece from a low budget movie but it has so many clichés,conviniences and stereotypes that it felt like a deliberately parody of a "romantic movie". List: The "you shouldn't had to heard that, it's not what it looks like" *runs away and doesn't let explain*; The main characters hating each other because of said artifical misunderstanding that could had been solved with a text message; time jumps, because the movie can bother to portray realistic scenarios that leads to the main characters and supporting roles to conviniently know each other and ALL of them been invited to the same wedding; The destruction of the wedding cake by accident by the main couple and then the marrying couple using the same cake in the wedding despite the marrying couple been obscenely rich by the look of the house; The main couple fighting, making everyone upset, then the supporting characters trying to force them to be together, then the main characters pretending to love each other so they can be left alone, to finally fall in love for real; the objectification of the male lead for the obviously mostly female audience (I mean, it's 2024 and he is treated like a piece of meat, he pull out his shirt like 10 times and get naked for stupid "comedic" reasons, is so blatant and disgusting, people would lose it if the genders were reversed); the "I broke with my ex boyfriend because we never fight" which perpetuates and validate toxic traits; the stereotypical token black character with the accent; the himbo best friend that is conveniently also dating the ex of the male protagonist; the love triangle (the female ex that out of jealousy wants the male lead back with her and it's conviniently also invited to the same wedding); Yet, even more conviniences: the ex in the wedding kissing the male protagonist and the female protagonist running away so the male protagonist can chase her in a very over the top and dramatic way to a scenic landscape (jumping in the Sydney bay, so an emergency helicopter can save him and give him a ride in front of the Sydney Opera House). It offers nothing new, nothing fresh, nothing interesting. It was so bad I couldn't even turn off my suspension of disbelief. I only smirked (not laughed) with a joke at the beginning. The only other positive is that the pan out panoramic shots are beautiful.

Very cute, predictable, but cute.
lisaaltmiller18 March 2024
Forget the fact that this is loosely based on Shakespeare. Forget the fact that is predictable in just about every way. But if you remember that this is a romcom and isn't meant to win any awards or have the best plot, and you remember to just want to watch a film that is fun and easy to watch, then this is for you. It's like a 90's romcom, and I mean that in the best way. The characters are flawed, but fun. The plot is predictable but still enjoyable. The acting is just above ehhh. But if you like romcoms, half naked (and more than half naked) beautiful people, and some beautiful Australian scenery, than you'll enjoy this movie.

Finally a romantic comedy that feels like something from late 90s, early 00's.

Dig this so much!!

These movies are not Oscar material nor were they intended to be. But they are heartwarming and cute!

Teens should have more movies like this!

Us adults, we're craving for good old style romantic comedies.

I hope Hollywood will keep making more and more of these!

The chemistry was very good between main characters! The colors of the movie... The vibe throughout entire movie! I enjoyed it.

It's a seven from me cause I desperately need more movies like this.

Thank you creators for finally making us happy! 😊

I laughed a lot! For all the wrong reasons...
laurenpag23 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
You can't take anything in this movie seriously, the acting is bad, the comedy is cringy, the situations are not believable, and all of this makes the romantic moments obsolete.

The acting is not great. Sydney Sweeney is a great actor, but I don't think in comedy movies, I found her great in Euphoria though. Glen Powell has a very punchable looking face. That really has nothing to do with the movie, just my raunchy personal opinion. What has to do with the movie is his acting is again subpar, he just has no range, it's boring.

The comedy is so awkward. It's all over the place, from seeing a man's penis out of no where, a they find a spider so they instantly rip all of their clothes off, which brings me to that the situations they get into are not natural or logical. Instantly ripping all of your clothes off and throwing them off a cliff seems like a last resort. And why did Sydney's character just leave in the morning, it has no reason, no motive, and is played off as her being like "idk I just got to go!". It's bad writing, forcing an unrealistic situation to drive a plot is just not fun and makes the characters seem not smart and not relatable. Some other examples are when she decides to climb over glens character to steal his cookie? In what world would this happen, and if it did, how the hell did he not wake up, also Sydney's character just deciding to leave the wedding and go across the city is again, a weird decision, and is there only to drive an already very unrealistic plot.

Lastly, all the romantic moments are squashed by all the other faults of the movie, not to mention the total lack of spark between the actors. No actors don't need to actually be in love to make love stories realistic, it's just that their love is so unbelievable. It just doesn't feel right.

In my conclusion, this movie is only worth to watch with a drink and group of friends to tear it apart.

Pure escapism featuring beautiful people, beautiful locations with lots of laugh out loud moments
MichaelByTheSea26 December 2023
This was like an R rated raunchy Hallmark movie where people actually have sex. I can do without the miscommunication trope that drove apart a couple that seemed to be connecting, but I enjoyed the banter and really enjoyed the stars.

"Serious" critics typically don't appreciate the rom-com genre and judge them harshly. I went with my adult children and we all loved the movie. My kids make fun of my love for Hallmark movies, but even they liked this one. We laughed out loud repeatedly and walked out smiling. I love that feeling.

Sure, the script is flawed, the plot's ridiculous, and some of the dialogue is a bit off, but Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney light up the screen with their amazing chemistry. They're extraordinary specimens and look like they spend 6 hours a day in the gym, but I also like them as actors. Glen Powell was really good in another enjoyable modern rom-com with Zoey Deutch called "Set It Up" and he's fearless here, especially with the over the top body humor.

Sydney Sweeney is certainly voluptuous, and gorgeous to look at, but she's also established herself as a great actress in more critic friendly shows like "Euphoria" and "White Lotus". Edgy and dark is fine, and it certainly gets taken more seriously by the critics, but I prefer getting lost in an escapist rom-com that doesn't involve terrible people doing terrible things.

I want more of this.

Nice to have a rom com at the cinema again
masonsaul30 December 2023
Anyone But You is an enjoyably cynical rom com that still has plenty of heartfelt romance at its centre. Just getting one of these theatrically released currently is kind of a miracle and it plays squarely to the genre's strengths. All its beats are predictable in the best way.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are on their way to becoming genuine movie stars and this film only further solidifies that. The constant barbs they send each other's way for the majority of the film are really funny and the chemistry they're constantly trying to deny has a real spark to it.

This isn't Will Gluck's first rom com and that's apparent in the good ways. The broad physical comedy is balanced nicely by the snappy wit interspersed throughout and it's surprisingly epic (a lot more helicopter stuff than expected). A good soundtrack always helps with this genre and the one here nails it.

F-grade rom-com with little rom and even less com
pkertes-596665 January 2024
I went to see this movie because I am a sucker for a romantic comedy, even the average ones (and let's face it, most of them are). Having seen the trailer, I had low expectations, yet this film still managed to come it at an even lower level.

Boy meets girl, they hit it off briefly, there is a misunderstanding and when they reconnect through a friend/family wedding, they hate each other. Except as anyone could predict, ultimately they don't really, but it takes an eternity of inauthentic, puerile dross to get there. No tissues needed here.

The acting is generally average to poor, and local actors like Rachel Griffiths and Bryan Brown (much of it filmed in Australia) do the minimum required, and are completely wasted here. The script is juvenile, facile and has little in common with reality. The direction is pedestrian and much of the movie is a travel ad for Sydney. Throw in plastic, unlikeable characters and a healthy dose of gratuitous nudity. The attempts at comedy are almost laughable as that, and what little romance eventuates at the end fails to convince after nearly two hours of tripe beforehand.

Not recommended, even if you are a fan of the genre.

My Husband enjoyed it
clippcool24 December 2023
My husband enjoys shoot 'em up action movies, when we go to the cinema. Too much dialog and he's asleep. Case in point, Downton Abbey, liked about 20 minutes of it. Great nap. Oppenheimer best nap. I never suggest a rom-com. We saw the trailer, he thought it looked funny.

He was awake the entire movie! He laughed and really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it. The movie was a feast for the eyes. People and places were gorgeous. Chemistry between Powell & Sweeney was amazing. I would enjoy some more movies starring these two. The romantic and comedic energy was engaging. I haven't had the pleasure to enjoy in a long while.

All that glitters is not Gold
tm-sheehan5 January 2024
My Review. Anyone But You My Rating. 6:10

Very very loosely based on Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" with even a few quotations in the background and title cards this pleasant enough rom com reminds me of a line from a 16 th Century play The Merchant of Venice by same William Shakespeare, "All that glisters is not gold".

Which of course translates in today's language "All that glitters is not gold ".

Anyone But You has a pleasant cast set in and around Sydney which is fun to spot locations like the QVB building, and our beautiful harbour vistas and pristine beaches.

I was reminded of a far superior Classic romantic comedy "My Best Friend's Wedding " 1997 when I saw the actor playing the brides father Dermot Mulroney who achieved great success playing a similar lead 26 years ago to Glen Powell who plays Ben the romantic lead man in this movie.

I enjoyed both the young leads Sydney Sweeney who plays Bea and Glen Powell who play the star crossed lovers .

The differences and similarities for me in great romance comedies with weddings like My Best Friends Wedding and more recently Crazy Rich Asians is obvious they all look fabulous with surroundings that celebrate the affluence of wealthy privileged people .

Where they differ from each other is in the quality of the script writing in this case by Ilana Wolpert and Will Gluck.

Light comedy can be clever if it's not pretentious why try and improve on Shakespeare? It's an impossible task.

Anyone But You is entertaining but parts of it I found really irritating and contrived.

Adding a same sex wedding was a nice modern touch but it's the most heterosexual same sex wedding I've ever seen not one Gay in this village except Claudia and Halle the betrothed couple.

The most irritating characters for me were the parents of the brides played by Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths, Bryan Brown and Michelle Hurd they all seemed to be trying to hard .

I can't be to critical of this light comedy that probably appeals to a younger audience demographic than myself .

I hope it succeeds overseas as we need to export more home grown cinema product from Australia but we can't just rely on great scenery and cute animal platitudes like winking koalas .

Any movie but this
dogonlion10 February 2024
Everything in this movie feels forced. The comedy is like "please laugh, please laugh". I guess that works on some. Nothing flows naturally. The way they love at first sight and all of the sudden start bickering is unrealistic. The bickering is annoying. Sydney Sweeney is a really good actress, I really liked her in The White Lotus, but she's hasn't been in a movie that uses her full potential yet. The movie is full of cliches. It even has the funny black friend with no love life. I'm really shocked by how much money this movie made. I guess as long as those kinds of movies make money they'll keep the same formula and keep factory produce them and soon will use artificial intelligence to write them.

Nothing Special to Hold on to or Take Away
chukkacabra24 March 2024
The only reason I watched Anyone But You was because I have slowly come to appreciate Glen Powell. I wasn't expecting much, and I Didn't get much. Just imagine all of the standard rom-com tropes and you will surely be able to spot each one throughout the film. A spark on a first date, the breakup, and the back and forth will-they-won't-they until they come together in the end. "Spoiler" alert, if you didn't already see that coming. I don't know why I gave it a 6, but that's just what it felt like. Anyone But You had its share of good moments, but if Glen Powell or rom-coms aren't your thing, then there isn't much for you here.

insanely hot people doing a mildly humorous rom-com
SnoopyStyle24 February 2024
Bea (Sydney Sweeney) meets Ben (Glen Powell) in a coffee shop and they hook up. There are misunderstandings next morning and they leave angry. It turns out that his friend is marrying her sister. The two enemies have to attend a destination wedding in Australia.

Sweeney and Powell are trying all kind of broad physical humor. They are both gorgeous and both have good charisma. Neither are outright comedians and that is important. They are mildly funny but are rarely the funniest part. The first big laugh is the WTF old guy while the two bicker. The butt grabbing scene kinda works, but the leads may be overshadowed by a koala. This duo tries very hard. It's so ridiculous that it's mildly funny.

Expectations were too high
rebeccatroke25 April 2024
I thought this movie would be better than it turned out to be. First the good. Australia looked great; I would love to visit. Glen Powell does a good job with comedy. His boyish good looks are very appealing. The story is easy to follow since it is based on Shakespeare.

Now the bad. Sidney Sweeney is not good to look at and she CANNOT act. Her breasts are showcased in way too many scenes. Sad. Then there is the language. Mature people really do not use such foul language all the time. Way too many sentences have f--k in them. Unnecessarily overused until it becomes the one detail (plus the boobs) that one notices.

Forgettable rom-com that fails to spark and lacks believable romantic chemistry, hindered by bland acting from Sydney Sweeney and rushed, empty character development
ambusched9431 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A forgettable, expendable rom-com where all the somewhat funny, shock value scenes are exposed in the theatrical trailer and there is hardly any laugh-out-loud scenes in this film overall.

While Glen Powell has the comedy chops and romantic charm for this film genre, to my astonishment it's the EXACT OPPOSITE for Sydney Sweeney. Her line delivery is dull and she has the same facial expressions, blank stare, dead eyes for most scenes in Anyone But You. You can tell she's acting as in she's not embodying the character in the story and she's simply reading the lines, not conveying any natural nuances in her character each time she does this. Sweeney's crying scene in the taxi felt unnaturally forced. I was surprised her acting was half-a**ed, whereas in the TV series Euphoria (2019-present) her acting feels natural. Or highly likely that she's a limited-range, one-note actress that can only do dark, coming-of-age drama genre and fails at rom-com. IMO, Powell and Sweeney had the most chemistry when their characters were arguing and hating each other. When they got all lovey dovey, the on-screen chemistry felt forced and it was lacking that romantic spark between their characters. I was not invested enough in their progressing relationship to care once they officially got together in the end.

So one, I feel like Sweeney largely ruins the film with her bland acting and line delivery, and lack of emotiveness. A better choice for the lead actress in this film should've been a comedic actress or an actress who can deftly juggle comedic timing and dramatic, emotional scenes. If this film was made and released in the 2000s decade for example, Amanda Bynes would be a prime choice for the role of Bea. And two, the character development is lacking and backstory are just tacked-on but don't add any characterization substance. The screenplay pushes the two characters to meet instantaneously at the start of the film, so viewers don't get any individual scenes of each lead character beforehand leaving a lot of character backstory nonexistent. The screenplay gives a brief overlay of each of Ben's and Bea's backstory in a scene montage and it's the error of telling over showing, and it doesn't work, leaving a rushed characterization of both characters that cheapens the film.

Supporting characters feel like caricatures and don't add anything to the story. No supporting character was memorable. Some corny dialogue and meta rom-com instances that seem shoehorned in. Also, I wish Darren Barnet (Paxton from the TV series Never Have I Ever (2020-2023)) had more scenes, dialogue and that he would've been the guy Bea ended up with if there was an unexpected surprise, twist ending, instead of the "enemies to lovers" and "stuck together so they'll end up together" overused romance tropes. But the screenplay is too safe and screenwriters would never be bold enough to rise up to a different, atypical ending like this.

I did like that the majority of the film was set in Australia and a few of the songs used in the film's soundtrack.

It's ironic that Dermot Mulroney and Rachel Griffiths are in this sucky rom-com when blasting back to the past to 1997, both Mulroney (as the leading man and love interest) and Griffiths (in a supporting role) starred in a first rate quality rom-com, My Best Friend's Wedding. This is why most of my fave rom-coms are from the '90s and the 2000s. When quality storytelling, chemistry, and character development reigned in comparison to this current rom-com garbage.

Anyone But You is a derivative, formulaic rom-com that's ultimately unmemorable, vapid rom-com plot, and a waste of time. Just casually watch it once it comes out on streaming if you have nothing else to watch and don't care about draining 1 hour 43 minutes of your time.

Cute
alyssaganz1 May 2024
I don't care what anyone says, this was super cute and the ending was a favorite. It's a light rom com it's not supposed to be the deepest movie you've ever seen. Perfect for the type of movie it is. The corniness is what makes for a good rom com y'all.

The ending. Just a bunch of scenes singing unwritten. How has a rom com never ended like that before? What more do people want from these type of easy fun movies? If you turn this in to a 3 hour love story with deep meaningful conversation it's not really a rom com is it. And I get it people want to compare to old movies, but you can only make up so many different situations. This movie was awesome for this day and age. An easy to enjoy movie, very cute and leaves you feeling VERY good. Especially after a glass or two of wine.

Light, breezy, and plenty of fun!
ethanbresnett6 January 2024
Anyone But You caught me a little bit by surprise I must say. Perhaps that's because my expectations were quite low, but they really needn't have been as this film is a really solid romcom.

Primarily this comes from Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. A romcom lives and dies by its romantic leads, and they are both great in this, nailing the weird and evolving chemistry between their two characters. They are each decently well written, feeling believable and engaging.

On top of this, there is a fairly forgettable but perfectly pleasant assortment of supporting characters who add some extra levels of humour to the piece.

Speaking of humour, it is a bit hit and miss in this film. There aren't many big laughs, but it is amusing and does have a light and goofy tone throughout that is befitting of any romcom.

Now, this film doesn't really reinvent the wheel in any way. It has all the same story beats as most romcoms and doesn't take too many risks. Therefore the plot is fairly mediocre and (as with practically all romcoms) is far too predictable. This never really gets in the way of the fun though, but the inevitable ending does make it feel a teensy bit too long.

Overall though I think this is a really solid film. It has a good tone, a couple of engaging leads, and will give you a few laughs too.

Embarrassingly bad
bwbradwalsh14 February 2024
This is not a "standard rom-com," as others have said. Standard rom-coms are by definition romantic and comedic. This is neither. The writing is offensively bad. The acting is about as good as a high school play.

Sydney Sweeney has been great in other things I've seen, and maybe this was just bad direction, but I was embarrassed for her when I watched this movie. Her nothing-delivery sometimes felt like I was watching a first table read. Glen Powell's character could have been played by a golden retriever. Talents like Rachel Griffiths and Dermot Mulroney were absolutely wasted on overwrought and often cringeworthy dialogue, and oddly aggressive reactions to normal events.

The tension was so forced, nonsensical, and messy, I felt like I was going crazy. I found myself thinking "no human being has ever acted like this in this situation" for most of the movie. I was really looking forward to this movie, and it was just an excruciating watch.

The rom-com we've been waiting for!
parksiet23 December 2023
Anyone But You is the rom-com we've been waiting for! Mixing a modern retelling of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" with solid laughs and some undeniable chemistry between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, this movie has just about everything you could want from a great rom-com! Yeah, sure, we've seen it all before, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! It's just comfortable in a way. Yes, I knew what was going to happen and how the story would play out, but I was just so happy to be getting a rom-com on the big screen again! Feels like a miracle that a movie like this is even allowed to exist theatrically in this day and age. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Honestly, we could use more theatrical calibre comedies of this variety: ones that understand their low stakes, play into the strengths of their charismatic leads, and, perhaps most importantly, remember to have fun. It truly feels like a warm and witty love letter to the silly studio rom-coms of the 2000s (and that is not a bad thing), and it's cleverly directed by Will Gluck who made the fantastic movies Easy A and Friends With Benefits. Frankly, I just loved it and had such a good time watching it. What sets this apart is its witty dialogue, clever humor, and the charming performances of its lead actors. Sweeney and Powell navigate their roles with ease, bringing a modern sensibility to the age-old tale of love and misunderstanding. The film successfully blends humour and romance, creating a delightful journey that resonates with both fans of classic literature and those seeking a contemporary love story. For those who have longed for a standout American rom-com, Anyone But You is a satisfying treat that proves the genre can evolve and captivate audiences anew. This film marks a triumphant return to the heartwarming and entertaining spirit of romantic comedies, making it a must-watch for anyone seeking a delightful cinematic experience. Yes, it is cheesy and predictable, but goddamn is it charming, with laughs a minute and tremendously watchable stars! (It really is Powell and Sweeney's natural chemistry and banter that made this so engaging and charming.) It's just fun and utterly enjoyable - the more I think about it, the more I like it!

where is the scenario ?
theromanempire-120 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Such a wasted potential this film could have been so much much better as the main actors were cute together and the film had it's moments and a few laughs but the absence of a serious scenario ruined everything.

No real reasons were given as to why things were happening.

So suddenly the couple spend their first night together and all of a sudden the woman goes away without saying anything and the guy thinks she deserted him and suddenly his ex appear and tells him that woman meant nothing and the woman hears that cause she decided to come back ? Which feeble minded person wrote that scenario ?

And in the whole film to justify break aps and get together those who wrote the scenario came up with most stupid ideas.

The film was ruined with that beep,.

Anyhow u can check this out u may have a fun time but nothing special.

Awful
jennansanders1 January 2024
As a romcom lover, I did not enjoy this movie at all. There was no chemistry between Glen & Sweeney and Sydney's acting was atrocious.

I usually enjoy cheesy love stories, but this one just was not it. The amount of marketing around the movie was insane, and I'll admit that I was a victim of it.

Sydney's pretty to look at, but she shows no emotion and just overall isn't a good or convincing actress. Glen is a good actor and carried this movie on his back, but the chemistry just wasn't there.

Also, I know romcoms usually aren't realistic. But this was a whole new level of cringe. The absolute privilege and lack of realism just made it hard to watch.

This was disappointing and I won't be going to see any other movies with Sweeney as the lead.

A safely predictable romantic comedy that gets by on the watchability of its two stars
MrDHWong11 April 2024
"Anyone But You" is a romantic comedy film directed and co-written by Will Gluck ("Easy A", "Friends With Benefits", "Peter Rabbit"). Starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in the lead roles, it is a safely predictable romantic comedy that gets by on the watchability of its two stars.

In Boston, law student Bea (Sydney Sweeney) meets investment banker Ben (Glen Powell) in a coffee shop and the two decide to spend the day together. After falling asleep on his couch, Bea sneaks out of Ben's apartment without waking him, only to have second thoughts and return later that day. However, upon returning, Bea overhears Ben talking about her to his friend Pete (GaTa), where he disregards her as nothing more than a casual fling. Six months later, Bea and Ben unexpectedly cross paths once again when Bea's sister Halle (Hadley Robinson) becomes engaged to Pete's friend Claudia (Alexandra Shipp), with the wedding due to take place in Sydney, Australia. Despite their mutual animosity, Bea and Ben choose to maintain a ruse that they are actually a loving couple so as to appease the feelings of all the wedding guests and the brides to be.

Something that I really enjoy watching in virtually all forms of media is contemporary adaptations of the works of William Shakespeare. From the film and stage musicals of "West Side Story" (Romeo and Juliet) to Disney's animated classic "The Lion King" (Hamlet), many of us have likely viewed at least one form of entertainment that originates from Shakespeare's plays, whether we're aware of it or not. There's certainly something to admire about how the Bard's work can still be told in a modern context without losing anything important regarding its core meaning or overall impact. In a loose retelling of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing", the 2023 film "Anyone But You" has a lot going for it on the surface, but once you strip away these factors, all you end up with is another by-the-numbers romantic comedy that squanders its full potential.

Even from the very beginning, it's easy to tell exactly how this film is going to play out. When our two lead characters Bea and Ben first meet each other, it seems like love at first sight, with the pair spending the day affectionately strolling through a park and later heading back to his apartment for some home cooking. Eventually, the two realise that they don't really love each other all, with a series of misunderstandings causing them to "break up", despite not being a real couple to begin with. Later on, circumstances arise where they are forced to be around one another once again for an extended period of time, eventually deciding to put up with each other for the sake of keeping up appearances. There are no prizes for guessing the direction this story is going to take from here, as anybody who is familiar with the romantic comedy genre can figure out that these two will end up together at some point later on. This is where the appeal of the genre proves polarising, since there are many viewers who find enjoyment in that predictability whereas there are numerous others who hate it for the very same reason. It all depends on what you consider entertainment, but I personally don't care for this approach at all.

As a contemporary take on a Shakespearian story, the film still follows the same basic plot with certain updates added to make it feel better suited for today's audiences. For instance, the location of the wedding is now in Sydney, Australia, as opposed to the Sicilian city of Messina. In addition to this, the main characters' names from the play have been shortened down, with Benedick becoming "Ben" and Beatrice becoming "Bea". However, the dialogue is the modern vernacular without any of the "Old English" sentence structure that Shakespeare plays are best known for. Though I did approve of most of these changes, some of the miscellaneous Easter eggs and references to the original story felt very tacked on. In some scenes, we see lines from the original play graffitied on a wall that a character walks past or on a sign at a wharf where a large group of wedding guests are all getting ready for a cruise. The only one of these references I kind of liked was a boat named "Sigh No More", which alludes to a notable song from the play.

Since the film takes place in Australia, I expected there to be some gags about this group of Americans feeling out of place in a foreign country, yet there are barely any comedic moments that truly made me smile. In one scene that goes on longer that it should, Ben and Bea are pretending to be feel each other up intimately in front of the other wedding guests, even though everyone else is distracted by a nearby koala. It is here where Ben discovers that a large Huntsman spider has found its way into his pants, leading to him frantically taking off all his clothes and throwing them off a cliff. Why he decided to throw them somewhere he cannot get them back so easily is unknown, but it appears to have been done to set up for a rather contrived scene where he is now naked in front of Bea and the others. The fact that this scene has such an obvious punch line from the start should indicate the level of weak humour this film has going for it, as it would appear the writers found this hilarious enough to drag it out for nearly five minutes straight.

That's not to say the film is completely unfunny, because there are a handful of moments that raised a snicker out of me. I liked this running joke about the Americans thinking that Australian coffee is "amazing" due to how much more powerful it is compared to what they have back home. Without giving away too much, this actually led to one part that came close to making me laugh out loud. There is also a character named Beau who looks and acts exactly like your modern stereotypical Aussie bloke. He has long blond hair, is often shirtless, loves surfing, and speaks with a thick Australian accent while using slang that most Americans won't understand. Admittedly, Beau did make me smile at the idea of how us Australians must look in front of foreigners, but unfortunately he wasn't featured enough in the story to be considered a scene stealer.

Though their characterisation was rather bland, the performances of both Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as Bea and Ben are what saves this otherwise routine romantic comedy from sinking without a trace. There's no denying these two have solid chemistry, even during moments where they are hurling verbal abuse at each other. Sweeney has this specific look on her face that allows her to hold the audience's attention long enough to wonder how she will react to a certain situation, whereas Powell is a decent straight man who is capable of giving her solid material to work with. I just wish these two had more interesting character traits other than being the stock boy and girl who need to fall in love with each other simply because the plot demands it. Aside from this, there is very little else worth mentioning about their contribution to the story.

Considering how much it seemed to have going for it, "Anyone But You" does little to elevate itself above being yet another mediocre romantic comedy among many others. Its attempt at retelling a classic Shakespearian story leaves a lot to be desired, featuring only the bare bones of the original plot and some uninspired modern references shoehorned in for good measure. If it weren't for the charismatic leads and a few nice shots of the Australian scenery, I wouldn't give it the time of day. In the end, you can only really view this film as one of those cookie-cutter modern romantic comedies that just so happens to come with a Shakespeare paint job. Of course, if that's more than enough to keep you entertained then the film may just be worth your time. As for me, I think the Bard deserved better than this.

I rate it 6/10.
