Being an athlete can be tough, but with passion, you can improve. It's by overcoming wins and losses that you truly enjoy it

If you're considering a career in sports, I highly recommend watching this movie. It realistically portrays how good coaches and teammates train hard, strive for excellence, and use different strategies to break through. It highlights qualities like self-awareness, the willingness to work hard, the desire to learn from others' skills, the patience to accept assignments, and the ability to see through others' flaws. It also shows characters who are not tempted by money, prioritize self-respect, and are dedicated to their craft. Director Chao Deng really captured it all perfectly, and through the perspectives of Chao Deng and Li Sun, it beautifully portrays the challenges of that era.

Missed opportunity

Could have been a solid 7 or perhaps even an 8 in my book if real names were used. Why? Immersion. I had to pick up my phone and Google to understand if 1) whether or not this is based on real events and 2) how do the characters in the movie map to real life figures.

Now that I've done my research - the characters in this movie are absolute household names - some have went on to become political figures within the General Administration of Sports. Maybe this is why aliases had to be used, for example coach DAI is CAI Zhenhua in real life.

Interestingly IMDB has the coach's real name in plot summary...

One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its ability to transcend the boundaries of sports and touch on universal themes of teamwork, perseverance, and the struggle to make one's dreams come true. This narrative explores the personal journey and sacrifices made by the athletes, portraying their unwavering dedication to sport and a strong belief in themselves.

In addition, the film subtly raises the social and political background of China in that time period. He highlighted the importance of table tennis as a symbol of national pride and unity, as well as the enormous pressure athletes face to succeed not only for themselves, but also for their country.

All in all, "Ping Pong: The Triumph" is a cinematic gem that combines a strong story, great performances, and stunning visuals. Its ability to convey a message to audiences on multiple levels makes it a must-see for anyone seeking an emotionally stirring and inspiring cinematic experience. Whether you're a fan of sports drama films or simply appreciate a good story, this film is sure to leave a lasting impression and remind audiences of the invincible human spirit.
