This catalyst for this story is based on a real event. The westernmost battle of the Civil War happened in what is now Arizona, at Picacho Peak. It was there that a detachment of the California Column met a detachment of Confederate pickets. The skirmish which followed resulted in the death of three soldiers, one of them Lieutenant Barrett, who is seen in flashback in The War Between.
