Brilliant but eccentric crime-fighting psychologist “Professor T.” started out in Belgium, proved popular in Germany, and is now headed for the U.S., Italy and Denmark.
The drama series hails from Belgium, where it airs on Vrt. German pubcaster Zdf’s remake was a hit locally. As the second season of the Rowboat Film-produced German version gets ready to launch Friday, a raft of international buyers have acquired the German series.
Mhz has acquired it for the U.S., while pubcaster Rai has bought it for Italy and Dr for Denmark. German drama is in vogue, but unlike “Babylon Berlin,” “Das Boot” or “Four Blocks,” “Professor T.” runs on a mainstream free-tv channel, not an edgy pay-tv channel.
Beta Film sells the German version and struck the new international deals for the eight-part German series. It stars Matthias Matschke (“Grand Budapest Hotel”) as the titular professor, who teaches criminology and...

From the earliest computers to the PCs and consoles of the present, every system has its undisputed classics. The Zx Spectrum had things like Manic Miner, Chaos and Deathchase. The Snes had such games as Super Metroid and Super Mario World. The Amiga? Cannon Fodder, Another World, The Chaos Engine and many more besides.

The sign of a true classic, of course, is that it's still hugely playable even years after its release - hence the enduring affection for so many of those games mentioned above. But while it's always worth visiting the medium's most respected titles, there's also a certain thrill in roaming further afield and discovering something you've never...

Nordic Noir is popular in the United Kingdom right now and we tend to get hooked whenever we are given a new morsel to chew on. One thing we’d be stupid to not realise though is that Europe has much more to offer than just that certain brand of Noir. Salamander: The Complete Season One is an example of some television from Belgium hoping to get our attention, and with a tale of conspiracy and murder makes for a very watchable show.
When a bank is broken into but only 66 safe deposit boxes are opened, there is a sudden rush by the manager to keep the robbery a secret. When an informant informs Paul Gerardi (Filip Peeters) about it, the investigator refuses to let the subject drop. When the informant and an alarms expert dies suspiciously though Gerardi suddenly finds his life turned upside down and his family...

Belgian thriller Salamander has become BBC Four's latest international drama import.
The 12-part series follows Paul Gerardi (Filip Peeters), a police inspector whose investigation into a bank robbery uncovers a complex conspiracy.
Soon, Gerardi finds himself pursued both by criminals and the authorities and must learn the truth about the sinister organisation Salamander.
Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition BBC, said: "Salamander is a gripping, edge-of-the seat thriller - it will make a fantastic addition to our Saturday nights on BBC Four."
The acquisition follows the success of other international drama series in the Saturday night slot for BBC Four, including the likes of The Killing, Borgen and The Bridge.
"Salamander is an excellent example for top-of-the-line serialised storytelling made in Europe," said Oliver N Bachert, Svp International Sales and Acquisitions. "We are absolutely convinced that Salamander will thrill audiences in the UK the same way as it did on the continent.
