Metaphors and Cornfetti

Warning: Spoilers

HIMYM had a big job to do tonight, what with an excellent two-parter changing the face of the show forever. Barney and Robin get engaged, and now Barney must meet Robin's dad. Meanwhile, Ted and Lily argue about Robin's wedding plans. Add to it a baby Marvin problem, and you have what seems like a standard season 8 episode (which is bad).

The reason "Band or DJ" is much, much better is because it nails the emotional bits, which is one of the show's best strengths. The Ted-Lily conversation was beautiful(great acting!), and Ted's obsession over the wedding believable. I also loved the cornfetti gag.

But the best thing about this episode is that its title works very well metaphorically too. Ted is desperate to hold on to Robin, but will he move on? That does get answered in a brilliant third act, although the 'how' of it is yet to come.

Churn out episodes like these, and I won't mind a ninth season.

Band or DJ? (#8.13)

Warning: Spoilers
Another great episode. Just as always the middle of the season is perfect.

Barney meeting Robin's dad was too funny. Both how Robin met with him and how he denied permission to Barney. And oh my god, when he wanted Barney to kill that bunny! I also loved that he wanted to get divorced from his wife to show love for Robin. Didn't expect this one! This show really has creative writers.

When it comes to the less funny things, than the conversation of Ted and Lily on the roof was amazing. Wonderful acting, so real and so perfectly written.

Neil Patrick Harris Keeps The Laughs Coming
slightlymad2217 February 2015
This episode of "How I Met Your Mother" gets the blend of humour (Barry and Robin's dad) and touching (Ted and Lily's rooftop conversation) perfectly right.

Plot In A Paragraph: Ted and Lily fight to be Robin and Barney's wedding planner, and Robin still wants Barney to go through the ritual of asking him for her hand in marriage, which Barney is reluctant to do.

One one of the highlights of the entire show Lily and Ted's confessions was very touching, but thankfully Neil Patrick Harris was on hand to lighten the mood (although darkening his hair) and keep the laughs coming.

Not a classic, but still a very good episode.

A failed attempt at the "scary father" trope
puzgolac4 June 2022
Due to a lack of original ideas, HIMYM has done a fair share of tired tropes and now the time has come for the "boyfriend meets girlfriend's scary father". As expected, it fails miserably.

One of the reasons is that, like several times before, the series throws something out of the blue but acts as if that thing was well and truly established long before. This time, they are trying to sell us the idea that it is well known how Robin's father is a scary dude, and that everybody is well aware of that. The problem is, that is not the case at all. So far, it has been established that Robin's father is insensitive, doesn't care about her and wishes he had a son. None of those things mean that he is tough nor scary, but everybody acts as if that was the case and they expect the viewers to go along.

However, the main reason that this whole premise fails is that the father is not portrayed as scary at all. He looks autistic and not very bright, but not scary. The actor playing the role did a really lousy job.

Another weak filler episode.
