Sex & Nudity

  • There are a few mild references to sex.
  • The only nudity that is displayed in this show is buttocks nudity and it is only seen from Titans as Titans are fully naked but have no genitalia whatsoever. On a couple of occasions we see buttocks nudity from humans but it's not sexual at all.
  • Titans are seen completely naked though it was mentioned they lack any private parts, Also they are mostly seen male.
  • One kiss scene, not graphic.
  • Maybe the only other suggestive material coming from Ymir in the castle in Season 2 when talking to Connie, and again Ymir nude in the Paths, however of course from behind.

Violence & Gore

  • Season 3 gets even more intense and disturbing than the preceding seasons in terms of graphic violence.
  • When violence occurs, there is at some points no gore, but there is tons of blood.
  • Most of the deaths are Titans, but when a Titan eats a human, it is extremely brutal and disturbing.
  • The characters' faces are often covered in blood when they are in a fight.
  • Numerous innocent civilians are killed throughout the series, such as men, women, and children alike. They are often crushed by falling debris from buildings and we see lots of blood on the ground. These scenes are meant to display the casualties of war.
  • Fight scenes between Titans are often extremely violent and contain lots of blood and gore. The nature of these fight scenes is often quite animalistic and savage.
  • Beatings are also present in the anime and they are often extremely brutal. Teeth get knocked out and faces are left bruised and bloodied.
  • This anime is full of extremely graphic, gory violence, both containing explicit sword action and bloody gun action. There are several prolonged and incredibly brutal battle sequences where humans are eaten and Titans getting their napes, heads, and limbs cut off with extremely gory results.
  • Characters are sometimes bloodily killed by others, from being chopped with axes, stabbed with knives, or slashed with swords.
  • Occasionally bloody decapitations of Titans. We see them regenerating their bodies a few times. Several of these sequences are quite graphic.
  • When people get eaten by Titans, it is extremely graphic and gory. People are often shown screaming and begging for their lives and we briefly see their heads getting squished by the Titans' jaws.
  • Titans are killed when the back of their neck takes damage. As such, people are constantly stabbing or slashing the back of Titan's necks with lots of gushing blood.
  • Humans have the ability to turn into Titans and the only way to do so is to draw blood. This features slashing their hands with a knife or bitting down hard into their hand. Blood often sprays onto their faces.

Profanity

  • "Sons of the devil's whore" is said a few times in Season 4.
  • Some occasional instances of R rated curse words such as "fuck" and "shit" are present in the subtitles, but more often PG-13 rated language such as "ass", "damn", "hell", "bastard", etc.
  • The English dub has no uses of "fuck", but it still contains frequent language particularly. However, there are more use of "son of a bitch" than in the Japanese version. Starting in Season 2, "goddamn" is also used, but other words like "hell", "damn", "bastard", "crap", "ass/asshole" and "shit" are used regularly.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One character is considered an alcoholic, drinking whiskey for several times he's on-screen.
  • Some characters are seen smoking cigarettes.
  • A group of men are seen clearly drunk.
  • In season 4, one of the main themes is an islands alcohol supply being poisoned. There is a lot of discussion of alcohol and on screen drinking.
  • Infrequent drinking in some episodes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Certain characters act in rather disturbing manners. While these scenes don't occur as often as you'd think, it's still very unsettling when they do.
  • The fact that most of the people dying are only young teenagers (14-16) is very upsetting.
  • The whole anime is the definition of being frightening and intense followed by several sequences of graphic violence.
  • Most of the battles throughout are long, drawn out and start with little to no warning.
  • The scene where Eren rips apart the Female Titan's body is extremely violent and savage.
  • The stakes of the storyline, involving the fate of entire cities, nations, and humanity itself, are extremely high. The stress the characters have to go through after seeing their loved ones get eaten alive in front of them and having to face near certain death is exhausting and deeply disturbing.
  • Multiple characters have attempted, or actually committed suicide.
  • Rated TV-MA for strong graphic brutal violence throughout, disturbing grisly images, and aberrant behavior.
  • Recommended rating: Boys: 17+ Girls: 17+
  • The whole show has a very dark, bleak and often depressing tone. Moments of victory are usually undermined by subsequent defeats, and are often bittersweet with too many casualties to be considered a "win". Not to mention that no one is completely good nor completely evil since each character is forced to do some horrific acts for the greater good, and the horrors of war are touched upon in brutally realistic fashion at every turn.
  • The Titans' grotesque appearances can frighten some viewers.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A couple of titans have female anatomy and display bare breasts, but they are made of muscle or bone and the nudity is not meant to be titillating.
  • One character after being turned back to a human, is sitting nude in a sand dune. Nothing is shown other than you can slightly see her butt and a little bit of the side of her breasts but no nipples are shown. Scene is not meant to be sexual.

Violence & Gore

  • In Season 4 the main character Eren Jaeger ends up becoming the main villain of the series and there are multiple scenes of him killing countless innocent people with his Titan powers. He eventually starts The Rumbling where hundreds of thousands of Colossal Titans awaken and trample eighty percent of humanity. This is all shown in graphic detail and it is quite frightening.
  • People are often shot or stabbed or eaten with much blood being shown. Oftentimes characters are killed by people they thought were their friends.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Sasha's sudden death in Season 4 is extremely sad, and everyone tries to save her, it is a very sad scene. What's even more disturbing is that she was shot by a kid.
  • Eren's character arc is quite shocking and depressing. As the anime progresses, his taste for violence and gennoacide increases more and more. In the final season, he becomes a violent mass murderer and believes that the only way for everyone he loves and his home to be safe is to slaughter all of life beyond the walls of Paradis. This is all extremely intense and emotional, although Eren's motives make sense.
  • The Rumbling is very intense and frightening as it features billions of people getting crushed by five hundred thousand colossal titans. Homes, families and countless civilizations are all trampled on in the blink of an eye.
  • The ending of the series is very emotional, bittersweet and can be depressing for many, especially for those who followed the series from its very beginning.
  • They're are a LOT of characters at the beginning of the show. However, at the end of the show, only about six end up surviving. The rest of the characters die (at pretty young ages) throughout the seasons and this can be upsetting to a lot of viewers. Especially in season 3, 100+ soldiers (and beloved characters) ride into a battle and only one ended up surviving.
