- By Christmas 1944, Germany is surrounded by the Allied army and the Red army. Hitler has promised a super weapon, to defeat Germany's enemies.
With the Germans apparently near defeat in the latter part of World War II, a squad of American soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Division on a routine mission near Elsenborn in the Belgian Ardennes encounter a surprisingly strong German tank destroyer and infantry force. The squad is led by Lt Joe Conti (Neal McDonough) & Sgt Matheson (Sam Spruell) Lt Conti believes that the Germans have no offensive capabilities left in the Ardennes and assigns his company the task of delivering Christmas hams to the forward positions. After a fierce firefight, the Americans escape and try to make their way back to their own lines to report the German surge. The Americans realize that it wasn't a stray tank, but an entire column of Panzer tank formations, which was headed straight for their Division HQ. If the tanks make it through, the American forces would be slaughtered, as they are not anticipating any heavy German counter-offensives En route, they stumble across a German experimental site, still smoldering with flames from some devastating event. It seems the Germans tested some kind of bomb, but it failed as the trigger malfunctioned. The expected blast radius was several miles.
They come across an American OSS agent suffering from horrific burn wounds, and learn that the Germans are close to development of a super-bomb which will enable them to turn the tide of war and achieve victory. The OSS agent, knowing that he is near death, asks the soldiers to complete his mission: to find the bomb; disable it; and extract the scientist developing it, who wishes to defect. Their contact in the mission is a woman named Kestrel. He guides them to find the train to Stuttgart.
With their sergeant and other NCOs dead, the youngest of the soldiers, Nate Burrows Jr. (Chad Michael Collins) and the more experienced Dean Ransom (Tom Sizemore) (a cook who had been demoted from Lieutenant after the D-Day landings) lead them deep into Nazi territory. There, they are joined by escaped British airman Brent Willoughby (Vinnie Jones) and Red Army soldier Ivan Puzharsky (Dimitri Diatchenko).
Discovered and pursued, the Allies make a series of hair-breadth escapes from vastly superior numbers of well-armed Nazi soldiers (led by Lt Schott (Philip Rham)). Ivan leads them to the train yard, where the soldiers find the train to Stuttgart. Matheson volunteers to stay behind as hold back the Nazis led by Schott, as the remaining soldiers board the train. The OSS man had given them a ticket to the Opera in Stuttgart and that's where Nate reckons they will find their contact. Ransom shares with Nate that on D-Day Ransom called in an air-strike and failed to evacuate his platoon before the strike package hit the designated location. 56 men were killed, an entire platoon wiped out.
Schott was waiting at Stuttgart station with his forces, but Nate and his men are able to fight their way through. In total 4 people survive. The crew attacks a pub with German soldiers and steal their uniforms. They are then able to enter the city freely.
The crew finally make contact with a woman named Kestrel (Melia Kreiling), their link to the atomic bomb and to the scientist Dr. Luca Gruenewald (Jürgen Prochnow). Kestrel has arranged for 1 crew member to infiltrate the laboratory where Luca works. Kestrel says that the 1st atomic bomb prototype was a failure due to failure of the trigger mechanism. Luca has since perfected the trigger mechanism and SS will take possession of the bomb the next day. If the 2nd bomb works, Luca will be killed by the SS.
At night, when everybody is asleep, Ivan tries to steal Kestrel's copy of the atomic bomb lab plans (she is an assistant to Lua). Ivan says that he wants his country to be rich, when he is caught by Nate. Ivan takes the plans away at gunpoint. As Nate alerts the others, they know they have to get to Luca before Ivan does. Kestrel gets the crew to Luca inside the lab, but they find that the bomb is already gone. They fight their way out of the lab, but soon run out of ammo. Schott and his troops are about to eliminate the crew when Ivan attacks the firing squad and kills them all.
In the end, the squad manages to escape the Nazi facility as the Allied bombers decimate the place. Ivan escaped with the documents of Gruenewald's research. As a compromise, Nate takes Luca and the truck with the 2nd bomb prototype, while Ivan takes the plans for the atomic bomb. The squad, Doctor Gruenenwald and Kestrel safely reach Allied-controlled territory. Nate and his squad are briefed by his superiors that they will not receive any recognition or rewards and they must keep the secret of their mission in order to keep the secrets of the atomic bomb.
