Very strange connections here and the premise in terms of wit and emotion is not exactly working out either Warning: Spoilers
"Ani" is a British English-language film from 2012, so this one has its 5th anniversary this year. The writer and director here is Matthew J. Rowney and he is a bit in the headlines right now for a more recent short film work. But we will talk about that one on another occasion. "Ani" is about a student who struggles with his history studies and he manages somehow to revive an old mummy that is supposed to help him there with telling him how things really were back then. But instead they talk about other more human aspects of life that eventually also help the student with his class. Honestly, I found the connections and references in here a bit random and rarely convincing. I don't need an explanation how he revived her, but the rest of the story with the actual focus on by the director is nothing that is working out particularly well. Sometimes it even seems a bit pretentious. I would not say it is the actors' fault. They are both somewhat solid given the fact that this is apparently their only career work so far. Rowney is probably the one to blame here and maybe the art department (where he worked for example on Downton Abbey) is at this point more his cup of tea than making his own films. As for this one here, I give it a thumbs-down, even if it is not a failure. Not recommended.
