Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, one of the earliest superstars of professional wrestling, died Sunday. For fans of the sport in the 1980s, Snuka’s signature move, the “Superfly Splash” — a jump from the top rope of the ring onto a prone opponent — electrified audiences.
Snuka’s death was announced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on Sunday, which might have given some people pause, if only because the true extent of connections among professional wrestling’s clan of Polynesian and Samoan wrestlers is relatively unknown to the general public at large.

On September 18th, 1989, I attend my first WWE Live Event. It was a House Show at the old Stadium Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Main Event of the show saw The Ultimate Warrior face off against Andre the Giant for the Intercontinental Championship. Other legends that were a part of the show were Shawn Michaels and Marty Janetty, Rick The Model Martel, Barry Windham, The Honky Tonk Man, and Superfly Jimmy Snuka.
I bring this up because word came out today that Jimmy Snuka has passed away at the age of 73 due to stomach cancer. His work in the ring speaks for itself. He was a legend that helped inspire the likes of Mick Foley to lace up the boots and become competitors themselves. He was also the first notch on The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at Wrestlemania when The Undertaker defeated him at Wrestlemania 7. He also had a...

Jimmy Snuka, the WWE Hall of Famer, has died after losing his battle to stomach cancer. Jimmy wrestled from the 1970s onward ... all the way through 2010. Jimmy came into the WWE as a heel, and became famous for his acrobatic wrestling style. He eventually turned and became a good guy. He had a number of shots at the WWE championship -- both as a villain and hero -- but never won. The Fijian wrestler, also known as Superfly Snuka,...

Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka was definitely one of my favorite wrestlers of all time but I gotta say the whole wearing a skirt thing always ticked me off. I mean I get that he was trying to portray this specific image and heritage but let’s be real for a minute. The dude wrestled into his 60s and took lots and lots of steroids. I get this strange feeling he’s not all that cultural. But hey, what do I know? Also if it weren’t for the skirt and this particular incident I would have way more respect for the guy. Plus you

“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka could fly like no one else.
His Superfly Splash from the top rope onto his opponents was a thing of brutal beauty and he delivered it to the likes of Ray “The Crippler” Stevens, Paul Orndorff, “Cowboy” Bob Orton, and many more throughout the 1970s and ’80s.
“Snuka’s leap off the top of the cage was as groundbreaking as any single maneuver ever in our business,” esteemed announcer Jim Ross said on the WWE produced DVD, The Greatest Wrestling Stars of the ’80s. “It showed athletes that if you’re talented enough and proficient in your skills, and you’ve got the guts, there’s really no limits.”
Hailing from the Fiji Islands, Snuka was a standout in a long line of Samoan greats. Trained in Hawaii by “Cowboy” Franky Laine, Snuka debuted in 1971 in Portland, Oregon, battling everyone from “Playboy” Buddy Rose to...

Moves off the top rope have everything a wrestling fan could want. The anxiety as the wrestler makes their way up top, the athleticism as the move is executed, and the drama of what happens after they hit it or not, all delivered in a few tense moments.
Here’s a list, by no means completely encompassing and in no particular order, of some memorable top rope maneuvers and the people behind the moves.
11. The Superfly – Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka
Prior to the 1980′s wrestlers very rarely ventured any higher than their own vertical leap. That changed when a chiseled high flyer from the Fiji Islands performed the Superfly – a body splash from the top rope. The move combined a simple elegance with devastating impact.
