Absolutely Bonkers: Madcap Neo-Noir With A Message
samxxxul25 March 2023
Krishand's working style is difficult to attribute to just one particular genre. I am hyped for his works and he is one of my favourite working Malayalam filmmakers alongside Prathap Joseph, Rahman Brothers, Sanju Surendran, Rohit M. G. Krishnan, Sajin Babu, Abhinav Sunder Nayak, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Rajeev Ravi, Amal Noushad, Krishnendu Kalesh and Sruthil Mathew. Maybe few early works of Don Palathara but not his banal 2021 outing Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam and i still dislike Sanal's S Durga which one of the worst Malayalam films ever made with the recent addition 'No Mans Land' by Jishnu Harindra Varma.

Coming back to Krishand, i really loved his previous film "The Arbit Documentation of An Amphibian Hunt: Aavasavyuham" a mind-bending spectacle about a frogman with socio-political background. His latest 'The Male Ghost' also follows the same pattern and doesn't fit in a single genre. I suggest not be fooled by the title of this film. Because both the trailer and the name of the film itself are very deceiving. I expected to see something like a murder mystery, a bit of home invasion and psychological horror. What a stunt! It was a good tease and the film was much more than i assumed. This film is like a cocktail of genres bordering sometimes as a musical.

The movie begins with a quote "The dead teach the living," - Lars Kepler. In the local bar, it starts with a sequence leading to the intro of Super cop Sebastian (Prasanth Alexander), known for his, let's say, narcissist views, a bully to his juniors. He is also a good storyteller and as the movie unfolds, we get a glimpse of his life, a failure and that's all about him when the film highlights his relationship with his mother. A bully with behavioural issues and there is such an abyss of charm that his insecurity seems to be just an accident with some cinematic liberty and situational humours.

As we get know by his colleague that Sebastian gets only Movie-like unusual cases, enter an unidentified corpse which leads to a series of trouble in which Sebastian and other characters are tied by chance. He gets involved in all the bustle and chase with his department and the government. There is an affair angle which rings a bell in the end, literally a ring and also the racist brawl with a Tamilian bartender. As the plot progresses, the director through Sebastian reveals other characters and touches upon casteism, social commentary without going too much in details. I liked most of the characters in the film, special mention to the mother, maid, the old man who is in charge of burial, junior cop who is always bullied by Sebastian and the Senior police who also plays an actor and ends up losing his beard. The last stop for Sebastian is to investigate Susan (Darshana Rajendran) and the build up to the climax is engaging as circumstances are popping up. And all this is framed by some kickass neo-noir drenched black humour, the gags are organic in here.

Final note, the plot is engaging with a wacky style to it, which is both very unique and subtle in its texture. And also, we have a missing/washed up corpse but it plays a frankly secondary role and stands out in post-credit scene to voice out an important message.

An early contender for one of the best films of the year! [+81%]
arungeorge1324 March 2023
Director Krishand outdoes himself once again in his third outing which centres around a loophole within the justice system. Purusha Pretham is such an outstanding package of a film - it has incredible performances, unique shots and camera angles, a fantastic score (by Ajmal Hasbullah), humour that arises organically within the screenplay, and even elements of a procedural thriller. In a style that worked wonders in Aavasavyuham, Krishand his writer Ajith Haridas put together a biting satire on the police and judicial systems, delivering comedy, thrills, and drama in equal measure. Purusha Pretham marks Krishand's direct entry into the commercial side of cinema, and without a doubt, this would have absolutely worked in theatres, probably emerging a sleeper hit.

I can't help but the laud the ENTIRE CAST - special mentions to Prashant Alexander, Jagadeesh, Jeo Baby, Darshana, and Devaki - for delivering brilliant performances. Those quick cuts (of hospital reports & bills, FIR copies, engagement invites, and newspaper clippings) were a nice touch, adding important details in such a diminutive way. The green and red colours (as seen on the poster) are prominent especially in the night shots, giving the film a neo-noir treatment. There's also the unconventional placement of characters on either edges of the frame. The attempt to create a distinct audio-visual palette is quite evident and the hip-hop & synth-infused music, I thought, was a terrific decision. I look forward to the day Krishand decides to collaborate with one of the Big Ms.

Must watch movie
anushkapnair28 March 2023
Found it to be very hilarious. The black humour in it really worked out for me. I was LOLing in many scenes and dialogues. All the performances were good especially the guy who played the lead police character, the leading lady and the other policeman. The frames and all were very unique kind. Also the background music and songs of the movie. It elevated the film to next level. There is everything in the film. Comedy, twists, romance, songs. It is a complete entertainer to watch together with your friends. There is lot of laugh if you connect with the type of humour in the movie. Must watch definitely.

A pure police satire
ngandacinema25 March 2023
Purusha Pretham was a pure satire of the police department, not in a derogatory way but an instructive one. We had a good portion of laughter with the natural actors on set.

The fact that the story dragged a bit took away the excitement; overall, we were pleased

DELICIOUS

-The film was a public display of the lack of seriousness in the police department🤣

There were many other comic elements but the lesson was obvious: there needs to be a drastic change in the system and a more effective way to properly handle unidentified bodies

-The funky score was quite amusing and blended nicely with the humoristic characters and mood of the movie

-There were a number of characters who were shot half-faced; it almost felt like the idea was to convey half-truths, deception, and incomplete/hidden facts prevailing in the screenplay

BLAND

-The movie could have been summarized in much lesser time by editing out some not-so-necessary scenes like Jeo Baby's part where he inaugurated plants for an event

As a result, the film began to drag and wasn't moving straight to the point

-The images shot during exhumation looked unrefined, color-saturated, and a bit fuzzy.

Impeccably crafted neo-noir satire
sowljur24 March 2023
Purusha Pretham is an impeccably crafted neo-noir satire that showcases outstanding performances from its talented cast. The film cleverly utilizes a flawed system as a platform to explore a range of themes, including caste-based discrimination, fragile male ego, and the oppression of women in a male-dominated society.

Alexander Prashanth delivers a remarkable performance as Sebastian, skillfully portraying the many layers of his character. Jagadish, who plays constable Dileep, is a delightful addition to the cast, earning our empathy with his convincing performance. Darshana Rajendran, in the role of Susan, is equally impressive, carrying the enigmatic character's mystery with ease.

Overall, Krishand's third feature film is a captivating satire that keeps the audience engaged with its witty writing, outstanding performances, and astute commentary on social issues.

An entertaining police satire
Jithindurden7 April 2023
An entertaining satire following someone who tries to create the image of himself as a supercop. There's a lot of comedy that worked really well and the way the story unravels is also made in a curious way that is not exactly something traditional but not entirely experimental. But Krishand seems to go a little overboard with the way satire at times, which is also apparent in Aavasavyooham, some of it feels a bit too contrived and has a Youtube skit quality which kind of stands out when the rest of the movie looks and feels refined. In Aavasavyooham that was only in a small portion towards the end, but here it is more consistently sprinkled which kind of holds the film back a bit and unnecessarily increases the runtime.

But still, the movie was very entertaining and the main cast was all pretty amazing. Prashanth Alexander as the protagonist did really well and even though there are shades of his previous roles, he really brought a likeability to such a character. Even though most did a great job, Devaki Rajendran stood out to me as her performance had a charm and presence about it that is rarely seen for such a character and because of that, it worked really really well.

100% Entertainment
emilemmanuel-3914928 March 2023
Wow! Just wow! A one-of-a-kind attempt in Malayalam Cinema or even Indian cinema. An experimental film and a successful experiment too. It literally takes the police procedural genre for a twist with a good mix of comedy and mystery. There are a lot of one-liners and situational comedies that will make you laugh. The performances are all too good and the soundtrack is just too good. Cannot wait for the soundtrack and songs to come out. Don't think too much guys. Just try this film and have a good laugh forgetting everything. This was the funniest movie to come out this year after Romancham. Highly recommended.

The Loophole Laughter: Krishand's Purusha Pretham brings chaos and chuckles!
iknafilms4 May 2023
In his third directorial venture, the ingenious Krishand has yet again surpassed himself with Purusha Pretham, a cinematic gem that explores a legal loophole in the justice system. This exceptional film offers a seamless blend of impeccable performances, avant-garde camera angles, a captivating musical score, well-crafted humor, and the thrilling elements of a procedural thriller. Purusha Pretham defies categorization and embraces a surreal spontaneity that is both intriguing and cohesive. Krishand's mastery of the art of filmmaking is evident in every frame of this uproarious masterpiece that perfectly captures the chaos of life's unpredictable twists and turns. The movie encapsulates numerous themes and genres with a finesse that leaves the audience in fits of laughter from start to finish. Krishand's talent deserves to be celebrated, and Purusha Pretham is a testament to his cinematic prowess.

Engaging from the start to finish
rahuljose-4266529 March 2023
Indeed an Interesting movie, humorous, unique way of storytelling and really loved the cast and plot. The cast and crew all have done justice to the role. The movie has a satirical feel also. All together ,a perfect cast are being crafted and approached by the makers. Super Sebastian ,the super cop played by Prashanth Alexander is the heart of the film.

Krishand ,the Director has created a universe which is dark and comical in its own way that has to be appreciated. The film is shot in a noir style. Darshana, as susanna has played the character so well that has worked out great for the film.

It is a must watch comedy thriller. Just give a try you won't be disappointed.

Style must changed
sudhakaranakhilan26 March 2023
Krishand, the upcoming promising director once again mesmerized me with his new outcome, Purusha Pretham (Male Ghost). Unlike Vrithaakrithiyilulla Chathuram, Aavasavyooham Krishand changes his path into a neo-noir like crime, drama, or comedy thriller. I love the way of his narrative style and storytelling pattern. The movie talks about the life of a policeman named Sebastian (not only about his own story but also there lies the lives of entire police officers) who is on an investigation or quest to find out the traces and background of an unidentified dead body. Initially, that was not his intention but when the character of Darshana Rajendran comes he was insisted on doing so. The film also projects the inefficiency of the police departments while carrying such kind of issue. Great applause for the wonderful performance from Alexander Prasanth who did the role of Sebastian. Along with him, I love the acting of Jagadeesh who is well fitted in the character of a civil police officer, Dileep. Not only these two guys all the other characters justified their roles pretty well. When it comes to the technical side of the movie I feel strange about the disparate framing of the shots. The character is placed at one corner of the frame and other areas are completely vacant. I feel awful at the initial moment but when the movie goes nothing bothered me at all. The background score comes at regular intervals and feels some kind of rap mode in me. Comic scenes are not used intentionally but the humor revolving around those characters makes me laugh at some points. I like the film because of the disparate way of portrayal. A good, experimental one and surely a study material for the novices who are about to come to the industry.

Bad Cinematic Experience
subahanarasheed29 March 2023
I had to make an effort to watch the film, as it did not manage to captivate my attention. However, if you watch the film in its entirety, you will come to realize that the content or subject matter is quite interesting. However, the film's distracting visual language has made it a poor viewing experience. They appear to have purposefully attempted to break the visual grammar, which resulted in the pathetic cinematic experience. Cinema is all about visual storytelling and camera work do plays an essential role.

The subject of the film, the dark comedy genre, and the talent performances are all excellent. And there's no doubt about Krishand's potential. Just about 90% of the movie framings were extremely unpleasant to watch.

A TRUE BLUE MASTERPIECE OF ABSURDIST COMEDY
Ansango1 May 2023
I know that the word 'masterpiece' has lost its value due to it being so frequently and irrelevantly used. But I am glad to say that after AAVASAVYUHAM this film is another masterpiece from Krishand. The way it frames its narrative around a seemingly normal event and turns it into an absurdist nightmare is mind-blowing. Not just that, it's rib-ticklingly funny and most of its comedy is derived from juxtaposition. The writing is flawless and is a major reason for the greatness of this satire. This is an easy must-watch but the sad part is that such a unique and highly original film is getting overlooked.

Laugh-a-Minute Comedy Thriller!
mathewsregi28 March 2023
Purusha Pretham is an epic police procedural comedy with plenty of twists, turns and hilarious moments. I was laughing during the entire runtime of this movie. The performances are outstanding and outright funny. The Aavasavyuham director Krishand has delivered again and this one is a superb entertainer with more commercial elements than his previous films. Prasanth Alexander gets the role of his lifetime and Jagadish was superb in a unique police character. Darshana Rajendran and Devaki were good as well. The soundtrack was another highlight of the movie. Don't miss it guys! Just watch it and laugh out loud.

Astonishing Thriller, featuring the dynamic performances of unsung Malayalam Actors.
AjHuntt30 March 2023
Malayalam cinema is reaching new heights with its recent releases, such as Romancham and Purusha Pretham. It's becoming increasingly clear that a movie's success depends on a combination of strong performances, a compelling script, and exceptional background scores, rather than just relying on the presence of a superstar.

One of the most underrated actors in Malayalam cinema is Prasanth Alexander, who has been a familiar face to Malayalees for some time but has not been given the chance to play lead roles until now. His performance in this movie is truly sensational, and credit goes to the director for choosing him to play the lead character.

It's also worth mentioning the exceptional background score of the film, which leaves the viewer speechless.

All in all, this movie stands out as one of the best releases in Malayalam cinema this year.

A Neo-Noir underrated masterpiece with a surprising ending
mibinmammen-2707421 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watched Purusha Pretham and was amazed by the way the film used the Neo-noir theme especially in the colour grading and also in the camera angles. The director Krishand did a great job in using the Neo-noir well and also in introducing an issue of unidentified bodies and how they are handled badly by the police and other authorities. I seriously didnt know the issue and the end credits of the movie clearly solidified the issue by bringing the people who handle these cases in real life. The other aspect which I liked was the use of comedy which was natural and engaging and didnt feel like a miss.

Overall, a highly recommended and underrated film of this year.

Don't get the wrong Impression; Surprisingly Fresh.
SameirAli8 June 2023
The title, cast and poster give you the wrong impression about the movie. I thought this was one of those low quality quick made so called comedy movies that are made just for the sake of it. But, I was wrong, very wrong. From the beginning, this film is hilarious, so hilarious that keeps you engaged throughout the movie. The writing is so nice that it doesn't deviate and keeps you focused, the Direction really backed it up, strongly supported by the cast. Prasanth did an amazing job in the lead role, his lover character also equally caught up.

Being the cinematographer and director, Krishand took the privilege to break the conventional blocking and framing system, which I really liked.

Overall, very entertaining and refreshing movie.
