Belsnickel is a crotchety, fur-clad Christmas gift-bringer figure in the folklore of the Palatinate region of southwestern Germany along the Rhine, the Saarland, and the Odenwald area of Baden-Württemberg. The figure is also preserved in Pennsylvania Dutch communities.

There is no cold opening for this episode; the first episode not to feature a cold opening since the pilot.

In 2020 series creator, Greg Daniels, issued a statement revealing that the episode is edited to cut the scene for future airings in syndication. However, later in the episode, the camera pans to Nate with exaggerated lipstick and black makeup on his ears.
