CLOY's brilliant writer tackles in laws

Warning: Spoilers
This popular series from 2012 is by the genius writer of Crash Landing On You so be prepared for a top quality family drama with a lot of laugh out loud situations, clever dialogue and endearing characters. At 58 episodes it is a long haul but almost all of it is good. A couple of scenes could have been cut here and there as being slightly repetitive but on the balance it's quite a remarkably involving show and the interest lasts way after the discovery of the link between the husband and his adoptive family.

At the heart of the series is the relationship of a daughter in law with her new in laws particularly her mother in law and 3 sister in laws. Each of their relationships provides enough story to keep this show going. The dramatic element is the reuniting of the lost son with his family. The deep secret about the abandonment by the aunt is a little too drawn out. A funny part towards the end is the contrast between the old fashioned Korean family and the emigree American Korean adoptive parents.

The heroine is played by frequent collaborator Kim Nam Joo and she is terrific. She really is the perfect daughter in law. I can see why it was such a popular series as lots of bad things mother in laws do is put into this show. Youn Yuh Jung nominated for an Oscar plays the sometimes terrible mother in law. The antagonist bratty sister in law is played by the now leading lady Oh Yeon Seo and she does a great job as the terrible sister in law who gets taught a lesson when she falls for her sister in law's brother played by Kang Min Hyuk from the Inheritors. Comic relief is provided by the restaurant supervisor who loves the tomboyish daughter. Also the former popular singer is quite hilarious too. CLOY fans should note quite a few references to Hyun Bin in this show. I guess she had him in mind for a while. The male lead is played by Yoo Jun Sang and he has a nice relationship with his wife and the jealousy is funny. Adoption is highlighted here and it probably was a common issue back then.

I enjoyed this show. Despite it's length I would definitely recommend it as being worth the 58 hours of your life.

Secondary characters are quite memorable. The poor uncle and his wife with their scrounging ways is quite hilarious. Their academically challenged son played by Kwak Dong Yeon is really funny when he finds his niche. Early role for a future star.
