A New York Sour (the cocktail being enjoyed by Dickie's wife in the Onyx Club) is a whiskey-based drink. It is generally served on the rocks, combining rye or bourbon whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup, and topped off with a separate layer of Shiraz or Malbec.
The young muck-raking reporter depicted in this episode was a real person, Robert St. John. At the time, St. John was the youngest managing editor of a newspaper in the United States, having co-founded and managed the Cicero Tribune in 1923 at age 21.

The scene where Richard Harrow played by Jack Huston murders Franklin Werner James Riordan was shot on the second floor of Staten Island's notorious Kreischer Mansion. Famous as one of the most "haunted" houses on the Eastern Seaboard. Boardwalk Empire Cast and Crew reported several strange happenings over the 12 hour shooting of the scene including props moving without explanation and cameras turning themselves on and off. Members of the crew reported seeing a little girl dressed in period clothing who seemed to be lost. There were only two actors in the scene, both men and there were no "extras" called for background.
