Loss of innocence
itirsoylu3 December 2012
This exciting film is about the harrowing attempts at survival of two Turkish soldiers during a harsh blizzard near a communications station in volatile southeastern Turkey.

Ambushed, with limited ammunition and without their commanding officers the two main characters, yuppie Oguz and the ill-educated streetwise Bekir, two young universally conscripted soldiers who dislike each other, it is well acted, well filmed and with a fresh unique premise.

Filmed in a war documentary style with a minimalist but inventive approach it's a brutal, touching and visually striking story with situations observing courage under fire as well as the social divides in a uniquely militaristic country such as Turkey.

Succeeding well beyond the producer's expectations, it probably is the most original and unexpected success in an otherwise dry Turkish film season.

Realistic and Violent
boatmanali6 December 2012
A very good film combining excitement and emotional depth at the same time. It is made with a different style to most Turkish films where the happenings are the most important thing than the style or melodrama. It can be considered American in the way the story occurs. Ufuk Bayraktar gives an incredible performance, you forget you are watching a film when he is on the screen and this helps to give importance to the bad situation they are about to go through. The director is talented and he can play with your mental states easily. One moment you laugh, and the next you cry, and even though the film is smaller than usual in hits you if you can empathy with characters.

In recent years Turkish cinema produces some very different and important films proving that the entire film sector here is going in a different direction with its next generation people. This is one of those films totally different than what we are used to, and very ambitious in what it tries to do. 9 out of 10

A very stupid movie
TheBigSick4 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The main plot line is the military operation involving the two protagonists. But at the same time, there are a lot of subplots told in flashback, which are about the family and life issues of the two protagonists before they join the army. I have to say these subplots are too long, really disturb the movie and interrupt the pace.

Not only that, the action scenes are also quite stupid. The two protagonists do not even know the basic military rules. Instead of finding a cover, they just stand against the sniper and get shot.

Do not regard the foreign reviews

Warning: Spoilers
This movie can't be fully understood without having a substantial amount of background information. It may even require you to be extremely knowledgeable about some traditional concepts in Turkey. I can say that it is not the best film in terms of acting but its portrayal of different types of people in the army. Also before commenting on the amateur mistakes these soldiers make on the field you have to know that there is mandatory military service for all men. This service usually takes 9 to 12 months and only the first month of it is training. So these people are not trained professional soldiers. They are just regular guys in military equipment. When looking at things from this point of view all of it makes sense. Also the movie portrays how 2 people of very different backgrounds act under harsh circumstances. Oguz being the more elite educated one and Bekir being the more rash and humble one, they don't like eachother however they are forced to work together. Which is almost a perfect display of what happens between the soldiers in the Turkish army. Also for those who do not know the names at the end mean, they are the names of all the soldiers who reached martyrdom due to the terrorist organization PKK. All in all it is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen for its ultra realistic portrayal of events.

Excellent content simple visuals,

Film in the fact that it contains so many posts. The beginning of the chain of command for the two soldiers remain, to ask for help, but help prevent ... cooked kitten martyrs .. etc etc etc ... yes the movie was a bit simple, but as one of the military service and was engaged as one of the east, I can say, and managed to become the film's visual beauty of the film they want to tell. I cherish the memories of watching a movie, and if it came to the film ... Monitoring that do not understand anything, because the military dialogs. Turkey has many years of terror. Thousands of soldiers were killed in this battle. Mother cried all the time. This film tells the little terror in the country. Have a good time ...

The theme of the story is very good, and the technique of expression is also very good. However, the integrity of the story, the lack of background introduction, the success of the film in showing the fighting quality of the special forces, but the lack of attention to the local humanitarian crisis, and the inability to build a great mountain of spiritual quality. The inner play is very rich, but it's easy for people to play by interspersed memories!.

Insight in the Turkish soul
jonga-629-7224341 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Attracted by the high rating (7.6 at the time being) I watched this film which was probably mostly intended for Turkisch audiences. That was what made interesting for me: it gives some insight in the mentality of nowadays Turkey and it's attitude towards it's army. That attitude is very dualistic: on one side both protagonists are not happily becoming / being soldiers and life as a soldier on a mountaintop is not really glamorized, on the other side there is still the heroic dying ("where one will die a thousand will rise") and the father figure type commanders. On one side it is a modern, America type film on the other side quite dramatic and melancholic, which is maybe very Turkish.

The visuals of the mountain landscape are beautiful, the characters are interesting, there is humor. The downside is that the military action is either quite unrealistic or Turkish soldiers are criminally lousy trained: going into a building in enemy territory WITHOUT taking your gun with you? You are almost out of ammunition and you do NOT take the AK 47 of the enemy you just killed? Take a rest in the snow and not on the nearby rocks where you are not such an easy target? I have never been a soldier but have seen enough war movies to know that these are not clever actions. The two protagonists pay dearly for these mistakes so the director was at least aware of that.

Mountain hold out...
shakercoola8 July 2018
A Turkish drama; A story about a small Turkish army squad left to guard a field antenna on a border mountain. It suddenly falls to an ambush from ISIS. This is an entertainingly heroic story of two soldiers trapped in the ambush, fighting for their lives with humorous interplay between an educated, wealthy young man, and a coarse street smart ruffian. In a series of backstory flashbacks we learn more about their lives and their digs. The acting is good - it is gratifying to watch the characters put aside their differences and learn to trust each other to try and survive an unforgiving situation. The cinematography is good with the landscape is beautifully captured. There is enough tension built at the right moments in sequences to make it very watchable.

If you are not a Turkish!
tavsanist13 September 2021
It is pretty normal that you might think that this film is overrated If you are not a Turkish!

In order to understand the story, the reasoning, the logic of war between PKK terrorist group and old Turkish military (pretty weak compared to current times.) You should be familiar with Turkish history and culture.

This film is not for you if you are looking for a WAR movie.

The soldiers already know they are gonna die and they have no training at all. The movie DAG is a low quality demonstration the facts of old times' Turkey.

Even if it is for Turkish audiance strictly , it is still not quality one. Totally overrated, It is like 6, nothing more.

If you are interested a quality one that has kinda same story, check the movie '' NEFES'' This one the original one. Not a cheap copy like Dag movie.

So bad, that we will just wish you had your 80 minutes back.
joao-madrid2 August 2017
Almost everything on this film is wrong. Starting with acting that is amateur at its best level. The soundtrack is corny and completely over utilised. The history is a patriotic military nonsense that is perfect for the far right mindless viewers. The film is quite short and manages to drag and is not even able to hold your attention. The usage of emotional scenes from the soldiers between the conflict is a poor attempt of humanising shallow characters. The landscape of the mountain could had give us amazing shots was mediocrely filmed. What surprises me more is the high rating at IMDb, clearly product of bots or rating farms as this film is not up to any standards to be considered cinema.

Good Movie a Must See
dncorp7 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Dag The Mountain 2012, shows the harshness of Southern Turkey (Mountains) and Northern Iraq (Mountains) during the near Arctic Winters, that also happen at the 2/3rds Mountains of Afghanistan The Pamir (Roof of the World) and the Hindu Kush (Killer of Hindus).

Like the Movie "The Breath" (Nefes: Vatan Sagolsun) 2009 also a Turkish Movie, Dag depicts the extreme Patriotism within the Turkish Military, regardless of the Out Dated Deadly Conventional Warfare idea of Bases to hold Terrain during Special Warfare as Insurgency Warfare as used by the Majority (Millions) of Kurdistanis of the PKK, HPG, KGK, and Kurdistanis as Allies of Osama Bin Laden, Al Quada, Millions of Afghan Taliban, Muslim Terrorist Organizations as Ansar Al Islam.

Yes, the Turkish Military is as depicted, as we had refresher training with the German (Bundeswehr) Commandos at the German Alps as Mountain Warfare (including Technical Mountain Climbing) followed by more Mountain Warfare Refresher Training with the Turkish Special Forces at Southern Turkey, our "Training" was actually hunting Kurdistanis of the PKK, HPG, KGK, Ansar Al Islam at Southern Turkey under conditions identical to Afghanistan's 2/3rds Mountains before being deployed again to Afghanistan. Previously, we had graduated from the U.S. Army's Mountain Warfare School, and Arctic/Winter Warfare School.

The Effective Devastating Effects of a Sniper using a U.S.S.R. (Russian Federation) SVD 7.62mm x 54mm Sniper Rifle are very accurately depicted in Dag, average range 1600 meters, compared to most U.S. and U.S. Allies 5.56mm x 45mm NATO Standard as 600 Maximum Effective Range (Average Range M16 350 meters, M4 250 meters), as basically the Sniper can shoot at you all Day , while your return fires land Hundreds of Meters too short. Most of the weapons shown in Dag (The Mountain) 2012 are the Turkish Military Version of the previous NATO Standard 7.62mm x 51mm Belgium FAL (Fusil Automatique Leger) Rifle, effective range 600 meters, still 600 meters short of shooting the Sniper equipped with a SVD Sniper Rifle. This is why upon our return to Afghanistan we used the M21 (range 1200 meters) as our Standard Rifle instead of the short range M16 or even shorter range M4, and later on we used the Modern Version of the M21 as the M25 (range 1200 meters), as previously during the previous deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq we carried Enemy Weapons Ak-47 range 800 meters, SVD range 1600 meters, RPG-7 range 800 meters.

Decent Low-Budget War Drama With a Caveat
max4movie25 February 2019
Full Review on my blog max4movies: Dag is a good example for an efficient war movie, as only few locations, characters, and action scenes are featured. By creating an impressive scenery, the movie does give the viewer a sense of the dread the two main characters are facing. It's basically an independent movie, shot on a low budget with a small crew, and amateur actors; the lack of production values often shows and the actors often don't carry the more complex scenes. Generally, though, the characters are authentic and relatable, and the dialogues are mostly well-written. Together with the amazing scenery and the decent pacing, this makes for a worthwhile experience. However, the viewer should keep the nationalist perspective in mind. Back and forth in time
davidarmenta-0072825 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
For the average rating I expected a little more action, the storyline is fine, 2 rookies find themselves in a difficult situation where as always the commander sacrifices himself in order to save them, however, the action between scenes takes a lot of time and the ending is kind of predictable, I saw this because I wanted to see Dag II and indeed it is a must see if you want to understand part of the storyline of the second movie

Fine premise, ruined with crass pomposity
I_Ailurophile23 September 2021
From a technical standpoint, 'The mountain' ('Dag') is pretty great. The filming locations provide us with outstanding natural beauty to enjoy with image quality that is crisp and clear. Sound design is likewise pristine. Blood effects and makeup, wardrobe, and props all look good. I think the chief actors are fine. I also admire the core concept of the film: Two soldiers, at odds with one another, are forced to work together when a routine mission goes far astray under adverse conditions high on a mountain.

I admit I was curious to watch in no small part because the root premise reminded me, superficially, of the 'Star Trek: Deep Space 9' episode 'The ascent' - two generally opposed individuals, working in common cause. With that central focus in mind, I think writer-director Alper Çaglar guides his small primary cast into some neatly arranged scenes, and captures some particularly swell shots. If 'The mountain' were tightly focused on the active narrative, it would have benefited greatly.

Unfortunately, that's not what we actually get. The film's original score is frankly over the top, adding grossly dramatic flair that's overwrought and overbearing. Frequent flashback scenes provide unnecessary background for protagonists Oguz and Bekir in past moments that are dubious at best, maudlin at worst, and mostly just awkward or counterproductive. Dialogue commonly includes absolutely superfluous, tasteless homophobic slurs, and where it isn't concentrated on the plot atop the mountain it broadly echoes the same tawdry slant. The rare kernel of profundity that 'The mountain' has to impart is lost, subsumed amidst gaudy embellishment and otherwise poor writing so garish as to be grotesque.

As if all this weren't bad enough, the picture is saturated through and through with grandstanding so horridly heavy-handed as to be arrogant. Patriotism! National pride! Service! Army, hoo-rah! Such blatantly kitschy pretension would be direly unwelcome and deservedly criticized in a Hollywood blockbuster; for a different country's military to be the apple of a feature's eye is no better. A few key words come to mind, like haughty, condescending, stuffy, uptight, smug, and obnoxious. Blech!

It's a shame, really. 'The mountain' could have been a short film of certainly no more than half its final length of 90 minutes without meaningfully sacrificing any substance. That short could easily be a plainspoken survival thriller - further cut or simply revise a great deal of dialogue, do some pick-up shots focused on the core premise - presto, a winner. That short could also easily maintain the spirit of what the full-length feature represents; careful writing, editing, sequencing, and overall consideration would have allowed for much more sparing use of flashback scenes to be significantly more impactful, and for what wisdom the screenplay has to convey to readily flourish.

But that hypothetical short is not what 'The mountain' is. The execution is dressed up so ostentatiously as to be vulgar. The fundamental story beats of the active plot are great, and the technical craft is on point; for this, I wish I could say I like the movie more than I do. Yet almost everything else is questionable in the least, and emphatically dispensable at worst, making me wonder I'm not being too generous as it is in how I regard the final product.

If you can't get enough of go-getter, chest-beating, jingoistic military bravado, and you don't care about how overblown or tacky it may be - well done, this is the movie for you. For anyone else, I can't think of a situation in which I'd recommend 'The mountain.'

It had potential. That potential was wasted.

Original characters but patriotic
ayyildiz-bulent28 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It is a minimalist war movie promoting Turkish patriotism. There is no explosions, enormous gun fighting scenes and other visual effects, which are expected in war movies. The characters are original. Especially, Bekir character is very Turkish. In his civil life, he used to be a timid man who cannot declare his love. He is aggressive-macho type man, and loves fighting, which causes to prolong his military duty. On the other hand, there is a merciful son, who takes care of his sick mother and avoids harming even insects, but he feels like he has to conceal his softness since he thinks he must act like a "man." He is a spitfire and does not like to be rational. The other character, Oguz is the opposite of him; he is well educated, casanova, coming from a well-to-do family. Although he does not have to serve in Turkish military forces (since he is university graduate and is able to buy out his military contract), he sort of volunteers to be soldier. At this point, the movie criticizes Turkish military system and the inequality between the poor and rich, since the latter ones do not have to serve for the army if they pay certain amount of money. Oguz character can be criticized for being an imitation of western-type action movie hero, but this is another originality, since there is a westernization conflict in Turkey; those who are in favor of western type society called "White Turk," and Oguz is one of them. However, it is not known why he wants to attend to military service. Thew worst part of the movie was the sniper scene through the end; it was an absurd, unrealistic scene, where Oguz leaves his entrenchment and becomes an open target for the sniper within a close distance. However, the sniper misses to shoot him until he is out of bullet.

Worth your time...
Thanos_Alfie27 March 2023
"The Mountain" is a Drama - Thriller movie in which we follow two soldiers trying to survive after their team fell into a terrorist ambush on the peaks of a mountain. They have to cooperate and try very hard to survive.

I found this movie very interesting because it had a mesmerizing plot and beautiful cinematography. The direction which was made by Alper Caglar who is also the writer was simply breathtaking and he succeeded on making the audience not only follow his main characters but also relate to them and what they have been through. The interpretations of both Caglar Ertugrul who played as Oguz and Ufuk Bayraktar who played as Bekir were very good and they both made the difference. Finally, I have to say that "The Mountain" is an interesting movie and I highly recommend everyone to watch it.

Something fishy is going on here....
xacebop-094242 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Out of nowhere I came across dozens of films I had never heard of before with ridiculously high imdb scores and the votes to back them up. This film "Dag" (2012) is among them.

Do you ever see a movie's score beforehand and then go watch the movie with a bias towards thinking it will be good because so many others thought so? It might be shameful but I think we all have done it regardless of how small of an expectation it influences. With this film in particular I was extremely optimistic and in a hurry to watch it because the sequel - The Mountain (part 2) was rated significantly better.

I was disappointed entirely. There were some areas of the film that were much better than the final overall score but those were few and far between.

The first thing I noticed was that this film was shot with modern equipment and looked like something that might come out of Hollywood as opposed to a lot of times foreign films are a generation or two back and their film quality looks comparatively worse than what is the current standard by about a decade. I was surprised by this, off to a good start.

Right off the bat it hits you, this film is trying to speak to YOU, the audience. Ingrained within its dialogue is nothing short of propaganda. The overly dramatic death scenes; The main character, despite having significant financial resources and a woman he loves is just like NOPE, I am going to make my family proud and prove them wrong and go join the obligatory military duty - so they break up. This might be believable but the manner in which they did it exhibited no logic beyond the character trying to "prove" something to his family (why?).

Ok not a big deal, I can give them that. The next part really pissed me off. One of the more experienced officers is running along a ridge where there is one sniper shooting at the squad (not a very good one) and instead of evacuating along with the other men he stops dead in his tracks and walks toward the sniper and shouts out some obligatory nationalistic phrase before he is shot and killed in an overly dramatic fashion. This course of events would be required to set up the plot for the rest of the film, however the manner in which it was executed was overtly tangible and really changed whatever predisposed expectations I had from the imdb reviews. So far, we're about 10 minutes in.

The story continues in the same manner with scenes being executed seemingly just to set up the plot of the film: two men are stranded and must hold out against terrorists (maybe?) who are in control of a strategic radio tower on top of a mountain.

Upon reaching their destination they find the tower seemingly abandoned until... surprise! an enemy combatant is inside (watching tv). An overly dramatic scene plays out in which the main character is pinned down and the enemy soldier is slowly trying to press his knife into the hero's heart. As he does this, he whispers: "Shhhhh....". Well now that looks familiar... In fact, it is an exact ripoff of the film Saving Private Ryan, albeit with no emotional response whatsoever from the audience. Truth be told, it was embarrassing to watch.

At this point in the film there was no going back. The film was irredeemable in my eyes. Looking back on it, the film consists mostly of stolen content executed in a way that would be disrespectful to the original material.

After this experience my eyes really opened up to what was going on. Turkish people are swarming onto this site in massive numbers and rating all of their movies 10/10. This is evident by going into the details of the votes of these films and seeing the origin and numbers of the location of where the votes came from. Because of this terrible experience the 6 or so other Turkish films which I intended to watch afterwards have long-since been removed from my mind. I will probably never watch another Turkish film as long as I live and that is such a travesty because it is not fair that other films have to suffer because of its inhabitants inflated the votes in order to... honestly I am not sure why. There is nothing to gain from doing this other than to promote the message embedded within the film - an unnecessarily nationalistic message for the citizens and to recruit soldiers to fight against "terrorists".

DO NOT WATCH.

They missed the Boat
hatyaiair6 June 2018
Not sure why this film has such a high rating - I watched it based on the rating and was very disappointed. The story is choppy, acting is poor and the cinematography given the amazing scenery they are in is not good. Continuity was lacking - in one scene the aggressors remove a soldiers gloves and 5 minutes later he has them on again! His face is red from a beating and 10 minutes later it is black. Its a waste of time, no need to watch this film.
