The entire film was shot on location on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. When Nick Tingley, Gemma Chitty, Mark Nurdin and Dave Irving decided to take a boating holiday on the canal, Nick decided to write and shoot "Killing Time" to take advantage of the situation. The film was shot over two days during breaks the team took whilst boating between Castleford and Skipton.
The original script originally called for the film to open to a black screen which would eventually fade up to show the boat being moored to the side of the canal. However, a chance encounter with a police helicopter whilst boating down the canal, changed the original plans. Having shot footage of the helicopter passing overhead the opening sequence was changed to show the boat traveling down the canal with the police helicopter in pursuit, using additional footage shot by Gemma Chitty on the first day of shooting. During the editing process, Nick Tingley then put together a sound-scape using archive sound effects and the voices of the radio operators to sell the idea that the two robbers had in fact just committed a bank heist. Whilst the end result is nothing like the original script, Nick Tingley maintains that chance encounter with the helicopter was one of the best things that could have happened to the film.
