A psychic, Randolph James, is found dead in his consulting rooms, murdered. Upon investigation it is discovered that he was living a double life: he is actually Rueben Beatty, a psychological researcher.

After young psychic Randolph James is murdered he is exposed as a fraud,a psychology research fellow called Reuben Beatty,who leaves a young wife Polly and baby - as well as a healthier bank balance than expected. Reuben's colleague Vicki Walmsley tells Lewis Reuben pretended to be a psychic to gather research and their boss,Professor Andrew Clare,endorses this. However Vicki also says that Clare wanted Reuben to use a truth drug he was developing for a project involving the armed forces. Investigations lead to a bereaved couple,the Dhuttas,who believe in euthanasia and Justine Skinner,a psychic who visited Reuben and saw he was a fraud. She tells the police she senses danger,involving one Frank McLean,but he too turns out to be a psychic who exposed Reuben online. Then Vicki is killed.—don @ minifie-1

Inspector Lewis and DS Hathaway investigate the death of Randolph James, who was found dead in his chair in his office. The police find a debit card on him in his true name, Reuben Beatty. He was a supposed psychic but in fact was a research fellow in psychology. His young widow Polly knew nothing of him working as a psychic nor of the bank account with a healthy balance. Dr. Hobson finds a hypodermic puncture wound and she determines he was first sedated with barbiturates and then injected with a paralyzing agent normally used to euthanize large animals. Beatty's colleague and good friend Vicki Walmsley tells the police Reuben was actually conducting a field experiment. He was also upset about a experiment Professor Andrew Crane would be conducting for the military. Given that the murder is comparable to euthanasia, Lewis and Hathaway visit Kanan Dutta who heads of movement to legalize the practice but he has little offer them. They do get a DNA match from Reuben's office to Justine Skinner who had been brought in a year ago for killing her neighbor's cats. They also question Frank McLean, another practicing psychic, who had visited Reuben with the aim of exposing him as a fraud. They soon have a second murder however.—garykmcd
