- Joseph Lin: When a group of pieces is so well known and so well studied and performed we can talk as much as we want about the experimental, the audacious quality in which this music, these pieces were first heard when they were premiered but there is this slight danger, maybe more than slight, that today they can be taken for granted, some of that, in our getting to know it so well and our preparing it so well and the repeated performances and listenings of this music and I think one of the challenges for us is to somehow, I mean its kind of like a magicians trick you have to know as well as possible every step of the way in this incredibly complex music but when you perform it you need to deliver in such a way that the drama, the unknown, the mystery and shock is still there and not just the shock for the audience but somehow being about to live those surprising turns yourself with every playing of it.
