The folks at The Asylum are the masters of the mockbuster – those being lower budget movies that are made and released around the same time as bigger budget studio movies with similar titles and concepts. Some of their previous films include Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers, Almighty Thor, Battle Star Wars, Top Gunner, Jurassic Domination, and The Little Mermaid. It’s pretty easy to figure out what each one of those was trying to cash in on. Now, with a new Exorcist sequel (The Exorcist: Believer) set to reach theatres on October 6th, The Asylum has announced that they will be releasing a movie called The Exorcists on September 29th – and a trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above!
The Exorcists will be receiving both a digital release and a limited theatrical release. According to our friends at Bloody Disgusting, the movie will be showing at...

Perhaps Universal’s most renowned contributions to cinema lie in their horror library. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, if you can name it they probably made it. But until now, that awesome catalogue was unavailable to view in one place. Sounds like the grousing of a spoilt millennial, I know. The fact is that we’ve all become accustomed to having content at our fingertips. Praise be then that a streaming service has today launched to fulfil that demand. Peacock brings Universal’s esteemed horror collection to the masses.
Unlike its rivals, the service has both a paid-for package and a free one (though you’ll have to contend with adverts). Why not take a look at all the horror films currently available for free, though? Trick question, as there’s no reason why not to. That’s why all the horror films currently available for free are listed below.

Two's company and three's a crowd--but four can soar! At least that's what the good folks at haRFMFul Productions, Sick Puppy Pictures, MOnsterworks66 and Lion Arch Productions believe as they prep a three-feature slate to shoot in Louisiana later this year or early in 2016!
Rycke Foreman (haRMFul), Phil Condit (Sick Puppy), Maria Olsen (MO66) and Lionel Archuleta (Lion Arch) are developing a slate of three horror-comedies for production in Louisiana and are presently attaching cast and finalizing budgets before approaching La. investors. The three films, Happy Ending, Hacked Off and Grizzled! (#Hehog) are all zany romps through HorCom Land featuring lovely ladies, buckets of blood, hunky heroes and terrifyingly funny Big Bads.
The films may all live in the same genre, but they each have their own special stamp of entertaining insanity:

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by producer and actor Jon Kondelik. Kondelik and this critic have worked together, in the past. Director/writer: Jose Prendes. Cast: Graham Denman, Hannah Levien, Barbara Crampton, Sean Whalen, Ken Foree and Lynn Lowry. The Divine Tragedies is an unreleased film from production house Dual Visions. Developed by Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House), The Divine Tragedies is a tale of two murderous brothers. On separate paths, the two brothers come to blows, on their murderous tactics and ideologies. The film also introduces a host of horror stars, but most are underused. Instead, this indie feature focuses on one brother's destruction and descent into madness. Meanwhile, the green and red lighting added in a nightmarish quality, while the story developed in a dream-like fashion, overall. The Divine Tragedies offers a compelling story and indie film fans will enjoy the film's central conflict.

Another Bleeding Love Story, the quirky serial killer love story that Jesus approves of, started production in Baltimore, MD, in early January. A joint production between Austin Sheeley and MOnsterworks66’s Maria Olsen, this horrifically hilarious tale follows two young serial killers, Lily and Lucas, as they negotiate the arduous tasks of living and killing in modern society.
Lucas, played by Sheeley, is a Mommy’s Boy with Mommy Issues thanks to, and this isn’t a wild guess, his mommy, Catherine (Olsen Starry Eyes, Another, Vile, The Haunting of Whaley House). Now he’s decided to take his issues out on every middle aged woman he can get his hands – and his knife – on, but everything’s ok as Jesus has literally given him the “thumbs up” for the killings.
While divinely inspired to rid the world of these women, Lucas encounters Lily, a sociopathic teacher, whose main goal...

It's been a few months since we've gotten an update on Jose Pendres' The Divine Tragedies, but our patience has paid off because today we have some new artwork and a few stills to share!
From the Press Release:
Film production company Dual Visions has completed the official artwork for the serial killer fever dream The Divine Tragedies, which shows a partially disguised character from the film.
This horrifying crime thriller is loosely based on the Leopold and Loeb murder case, in which two brothers murdered a young 14-year-old boy. This case shocked citizens of Chicago in 1924. Now, writer/director Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House) is re-envisioning the case for a new audience.
The official artwork shows a wounded young woman and rose petals. The blood reds highlight the darker elements of the film, and the tagline promises murder: “Your death will be... beautiful.” But who will be the first victim?...

Recently, Shock visited the set of The Divine Tragedies, the new film from director Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House). There were a lot of familiar faces on the set, but none more appealing than Barbara Crampton. After a hiatus from acting, Ms. Crampton (seen in last year's You're Next) has returned with a vengeance, taking on her most wicked role to date, the woman known as Mother. Naturally, we wanted to know more, and she was kind enough to sit and give us all a window into the madness of The Divine Tragedies.

On a special day of shooting writer-director Jose Prendes’ Divine Tragedies with the fantastic Ken Foree, Dread Central was invited to watch some... well… shooting. In the scene they were about to film, Foree’s character gets shot. Whether he lives or dies, we can’t say...
But here’s what Prendes had to say:
Dread Central: So, tell us how you assembled this amazing cast!
Jose Prendes: Ken Foree and Barbara Crampton were always on our list, but we never thought we could get them, or thought they would be into it, because the roles are very stylized. Especially Barbara's role, which is very unique, and she hasn't really played anything like that before. So for her to call me up and say, 'This is a really disturbing script but it would make such a lovely movie and I want to be a part of it,' really means a lot.

It’s a sunny day in Southern California. That’s not unusual. An independent movie is being shot in a quiet residential neighborhood. That’s the norm. There are a few horror icons sprinkled throughout the cast. Typical.
What’s not so usual is that The Divine Tragedies isn’t your basic stab and slab. It’s a layered family drama which just happens to have some blood and gore. At the center of this dangerous dynamic is a cop who’s hunting a team of killer brothers – but he’s got an advantage because he’s psychic. That, and he’s played by the great Ken Foree.
We caught up with Ken on set (and some of the other cast... stay tuned for more interviews) and asked him what it’s been like to play the eccentric detective.

Director Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House) and production company Dual Visions have announced that they will be developing another horror title. The new film is titled The Divine Tragedies. And, this film will star Jon Kondelik (Airplane Vs. Volcano) and Graham Denman. The Divine Tragedies will begin shooting this February (2014). The story for the film involves a series of deadly games. Loosely based on the Leopold and Loeb murder case of 1924, two characters pick the wrong victim, a young single mother, to participate in their sadistic practices. Director Jose Prendes has compared the film with other horror titles from the past: "It's a serial killer film, but unlike anything you've ever seen before. I know people always say that, but I really think the film will back me up. It's American Psycho meets Videodrome, by way of John Carpenter. The eight arms of a giant octopus could not stop him. The mighty jaws of Crocosaurus proved no match for him. If Mega Shark is The Asylum’s very own Godzilla, then it should come as no shock that the next logical step in this franchise would be Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark.
The battle between the ocean’s ultimate apex mega predator and his aquatic android doppelganger begins on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD January 28th.
FX guru Emile Edwin Smith directs from a script by Jose Prendes (The Haunting of Whaley House) as Elisabeth Rohm (“Angel”, “Law & Order”), Christopher Judge (“Stargate Sg-1”, Age of Hobbits), and original Mega Shark heroine Debbie Gibson contend with the Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla of Asylum monsterdom.

Just how influential was Sharknado? The mere fact that I’m asking the question should be enough to prove so. The Asylum/Syfy blockbuster has even begun inspiring similarly themed novels. Like the upcoming Sharcano, the book about volcanoes that erupt magma sharks.
Jose Prendes, former ShockTillYouDrop contributor and writer of The Asylum’s The Haunting of Whaley House as well as the upcoming Thomas Jane/Nic Nolte western A Magnificent Death from a Shattered Hand, is behind this deranged novel about a reporter, a marine biologist, and a billionaire industrialist who have to join forces to save the world when a trio of erupting volcanoes unleash fire-breathing sharks made of lava.
Prendes told his former web-ployers about the inspiration for Sharkcano:
"The idea was to write a big, epic Syfy channel-style story but not worry about budget and silly script notes and pull out all the stops," says Prendes.

"The jaws of hell are about to erupt!" screams the key art for Sharcano, the latest thing to come along merging sharks and natural disasters.
This one comes from Jose Prendes (a former Shock contributor), but here's the catch: It's not a film, it's a novel coming January 27th from Curiosity Quills publishers.
Prendes, who scripted The Haunting of Whaley House and the upcoming Thomas Jane and Nick Nolte western, A Magnificent Death from a Shattered Hand, tells the story of three violently erupting volcanoes that star spewing sharks made of magma. It not only signals the end of mankind, but the start of the sharkpocalypse.

The Asylum recently released Hansel & Gretel, a modern take on the classic story that stars Dee Wallace as the witch. While we talked about her interest in playing the villain in Hansel & Gretel, I also learned about why she likes to perform many of her own stunts, and she told me about her time working with Rob Zombie on The Lords of Salem:
You recently appeared as the witch in Hansel & Gretel. Why were you interested in taking on this particular role?
Dee Wallace: First of all, because Anthony Ferrante approached me. I worked once with Anthony and I think he’s a brilliant new director, and a truly nice guy. When I read the script, I thought it was such an innovative take on the Hansel and Gretel story. It stays very true to the story, but updates it in a way that is good for 2013 and the horror genre.

On December 1st, 2012 principal photography for Something Sinister will begin/, the incredibly suspenseful and creepy horror feature that’s being brought to you by Christopher Dye of Dyenamic Films and Maria Olsen of MOnsterworks66.
Something Sinister promises to be a stunning throwback to the age of Hitchcockian smart horror as the tension builds from scene to scene and the whys and wherefores are only revealed in the final climactic scenes. Brooding and unquiet, haunting and eerie, "Something Sinister" will appeal to those who enjoy a good dash of mystery with their horror, and this film has a story that will keep you guessing until the end.
A terse and contained four-hander, Something Sinister stars Rachel Appelbaum (Just Seen It) as the enchanting – and possibly delusion ingénue, Amelia – and Jeremy Gladen (Hellementary: An Education in Death) as her perhaps-not-so-innocent beau, Eric. Rounding out the cast is...

Edward Payson’s Sunday Night Slaughters has announced the addition of Chalet Lizette Brannan, one of today’s fastest rising young stars, to its ranks.
Brannan, although only seven years old, is already making major waves in the acting community and has joined the Sns team as Associate Producer for the series. She is welcomed into the producing ranks by Payson himself, Antonino Buzzone of the smash-hit webseries, A Guy Walks Into A Bar, the Angel Corbin (DisOrientation) / Maria Olsen (Vile) team of MOnsterworks66 and, Seth Metoyer (MoreHorror Media).
Brannan is no stranger to a life in the entertainment industry and has, in fact, been modeling since she was 6 years old. She recently decided to try her hand at acting, and, so far, she’s had unprecedented success as she’s found herself cast in a slew of feature films, short films and commercials.

Nubile young bodies at first frolicking in the woods and then systematically dispatched by an edged weapon wielded by a masked lunatic. Ah, slasher flicks - we love them! And here’s the first word on yet another addition to that canon!

With The Asylum’s feature The Haunting of Whaley House having released to DVD, Blu-ray, Redbox and Netflix today, we thought it time to chat with director Jose Prendes regarding his film. Read on!
“It seems like only yesterday that I was starting work on the script five months ago (writer’s note: see our exclusive interview with Prendes during production here), said writer and director Prendes, ”when the studio came to me with a proposition for a Whaley House film and I accepted, knowing I could do something unique given the limitations with time and money.”
Produced by The Asylum, The Haunting of Whaley House stars Stephanie Greco as (according to the film’s official synopsis), “Penny, (who) is a skeptic, despite the fact that she works as a tour guide at The Whaley House, considered America's most haunted house. One night her friends convince her to let them...

Some of you may remember the so-cool-it’s-frozen horror feature Live-In Fear that writer/director Brandon Scullion of Iodine Sky Productions and Maria Olsen of MOnsterworks66 was promoting earlier this year. Well, great things are happening for this little film with a big bloody heart including that MOnsterworks66 partner, Angel Corbin (Way Down in Chinatown), has come on board as producer, and we have picture lock on the entire feature.
This gorgeous looking film was shot in the winter wonderland of Utah in February in just 9 days and for just under $5,000, and it’s truly amazing what the "Live in Fear" team has been able to put together on such a small budget. Kudos must most definitely go to Matthew Espenshade, the film’s brilliant cinematographer, Emily Fiora Parks for her stunning makeup and FX work and Dani d’Ambra for her ultra-eerie set dressing for making...
