Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • A woman is thrown out a window and impaled on a broken candy cane. The corpse is later seen from many angles, making the wound fully visible, though no blood is shown.
  • While few "details" are shown, this show is definitely not for children. Decapitations, dismemberment, torture, scenes of "hell". Fairy tales at their most morbid.
  • All of the severe moments are animated "tastefully" in 2D with no blood.

Profanity

  • The characters not only avoid profanity but typically speak in a very polite and restrained manner, even when in a state of extreme emotion.
  • The word "idiot" used infrequently.
  • In one episode, "Hell", "Go to Hell", "The Devil knows", and "Damnation" are used frequently, literally, and comedically.
  • Most of the violence is non-graphic and played off as worse than it is to give the show a false feeling of maturity.
  • Early in the series, the characters speak in an incredibly polite manner. Impolite speech becomes more common as the series progresses.
  • "God," "hell," and one use of "damn" in the fifth episode respectively.
  • In season 1 episode 5, Gretel clearly says "dang" but the subtitles on UK say it as "damn".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The show portrays food addiction in a comical yet disturbing manner.
  • Casual drinking is infrequently shown, and nothing is explicitly refered to as alchohol.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A girl screams bitterly at a group of children about pain and hopelessness. It is done in a comedic yet sad manner.
  • Multiple characters die in brutal ways, though the show uses comedy and silhouettes to avoid it.
  • The most graphic scene is a woman being impaled. Although no blood is shown, the impalement is visible and grizzly.
  • Suggested rating: TV-Y7-FV for brief violent sequences. Some episodes: TV-PG for brief sequences of moderate violence. Pilot: TV-14 for implied cannibalism and brief sequences of moderate violence
  • If it was rated by the MPA, it probably would be rated PG for action, violence, some dark thematic material, and mild language.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A girl (child) fantasizes holding a boy's (teenager) hand. He is later revealed to regularly make young girls fall in love with him only to steal their souls.

Violence & Gore

  • A man chops the heads of two children off with a sword. It is shown in silhouette form, and no shot of the severed head is shown in 3D animation. No blood is shown & the victims survive.
  • A child chops off her own finger in silhouette. The injury is occasionally shown from a few angles throughout the rest of the series.

Profanity

  • A bird comedically remarks "I hope we see some guts!", hoping that the show will show more graphic violence in the future.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A woman eats an infant (off screen) and it is implied she regularly kills and eats children of all ages.
  • Four parents (two couples) go through a state of either fear or scarring depression due to the belief that they caused the death or disappearance of their children.
  • The premise of the show is of two children being horribly abused by the adults around them, and this may frighten or sadden some viewers.
  • A teenager is found out to imprison & verbally abuse his mother, though this is portrayed in a rather mild way.
  • Season 1 episode 5 A child has to go to hell! Demons torturing people! A child must steal from the devil's head. Very intense for young child.
