Staying
kosmasp23 December 2014
The title is very clear on one thing. Which doesn't mean we don't get to see the character (rather the actor playing that character) on screen. It's a very weird movie with a strange feel to it. It's tough to describe especially because our main character is very inactive and very closed to himself. But that makes him interesting (not only for the viewer but for other characters as you'll see).

You might not agree and find this "boring", which is a possibility and wouldn't be surprising with a movie like this. But if you can stay and stick with this, there is something there that you won't find in many other movies. For better or worse this is different!

Bleak effective mood setting and beautiful cinematography - but story needs oomph
ArchonCinemaReviews19 December 2014
Jamie Marks is Dead is an originally told downcast drama about two teens brought together after a classmate is found murdered in a rural town.

Carter Smith writes and directs Jamie Marks is Dead, drawing inspiration and adapting Christopher Barzak's debut novel One for Sorrow.

Jamie Marks is found murdered, naked and discarded amidst the detritus of decaying tree branches along the side of a creek. Classmate Adam becomes sympathetically absorbed in the death of the teenage boy who was not popular and often picked on. He and Gracie, the girl who discovered the body, become close from the murder when Jamie's ghost begins to appear to each of them.

Cameron Monaghan is Adam, the classmate inexplicably drawn to Jamie's death. Monaghan is a budding talent and brings a realistic and unexaggerated angst to the role. Jamie Marks is Dead is about the melancholic connection of the characters and unfortunately Morgan Saylor's Gracie and Noah Silver's Jamie fail to deliver.

Jamie Marks is Dead is original, moody and extremely dark. We examine the character's familial and interpersonal relationships through Jamie's death rather than being a suspenseful mystery to unveil the killer's identity. All the pieces for the plot are there but for some reason it never comes together believably. Adam's preoccupation with Jamie's death seems unfounded, and the character's evolution that yields the resolution seems premature.

The story itself is laid out extremely slowly. Director Carter Smith uses this time to create a gloomy outlook of the characters' world through clear and decisive cinematography. The film is beautiful to look at, capturing the dark and austere bleakness of rural life and balancing it with perfect lighting for watchable scenes.

An inspiring story. Underrated
nixon-guzman16 December 2014
This is truly an inspiring story about something more than just being a teenage and how hard can it be for some people. It teaches us that we can find a true friend in the most unlikely of places, that that friend can be someone we never expected. Maybe, if we go deeper, this could be a way to tell us to not waist our time waiting for the right moment, because that moment is now, at every hour, at every minute, at every second.

It's not really a horror movie, but a sad coming-of-age one, with a fantastic and touching storyline, well-played characters and a peaceful soundtrack that makes it slow sometimes but never boring.

Haunting and effective
Red_Identity30 August 2014
It seems like no one has really seen this film aside from a very few, and I tend to not see films until I've heard enough reactions because, especially with indies like this, they always seem to, well, not be so good. This surprised me a whole lot. I thought it was going to be a horror film, and on some level it is, but it plays out like a coming- of-age drama. It reminds me of Let the Right One in/Let Me In in its slow pace, atmosphere, and pair of leads at the core. I think it's pretty fantastically directed, and the script, while not without its flaws, does a really good job setting up these characters and really giving some meat to the story. I strongly recommend this

Good cinematography, but what even happened?
stein-elliottd31 October 2023
I'll start by giving credit where it is due here: There are some really good shots, and the soundtrack also fits them pretty well. In this sense, I can see the artistic value of the film.

That being said, I felt like a lot of context was missing when it came to the story/characters. There were a lot of things that just left me asking "Wait, wtf is happening?" as a watcher who hasn't read the original novel. And maybe with that context, it would have been better, but having watched this expecting an experience with no prior research required, it fell very short. I couldn't figure out the lore of this world when it comes to ghosts, etc. If there even was any. I did appreciate those moments of stereotypical but effective hints in small details, but there seemed to be so much extra added here with absolutely no context to add any emotional depth to the story itself. It was a sort of "I want to like this but the only merits are in the aesthetics of shots and the use of music, I am not actually feeling any emotion for anyone throughout the duration of this story (apart from annoyance and confusion)."

At least it wasn't painfully long; I just kept hoping for something more than what was given. It might just be my personality, but no character was relatable. (And I'm not talking about the stereotypical Hollywood sense; I legitimately just found these portrayals unrealistic and forced, with no explanation and minimal to no context as to what the dynamics were to establish a lot of the "conflicts" that arise in the film.)

The book is probably better, because I can see where there was potential here, but the script, in my opinion, was mostly a waste of my time. At least I did get the nice music and pretty visuals, but still.

Morbid. Weird. Yet intriguing. I guess most will disagree...
peterp-450-29871613 September 2016
"You know, what happened to Jamie, it was awful, and it was tragic, and it was everything else that everyone says it is. But we have a choice, and all of us have a choice, and I made mine. What did you choose? Not to see him."

"Jamie Marks is dead" is a sort of "Sixth Sense" story, combined with a narrative about teenagers and the troubles they experience during their teenage years. That it deals with supernatural apparitions is also a fact. Are you expecting a terrifying horror? Well in that case, this will surely be a major disappointment. Jamie Marks (Noah Silver who looks eerily like Harry Potter) is without a doubt as dead as a doornail. However, his spiritual alter ego has other plans and isn't going to exchange his earthly life with the spiritual easily. Is Jamie seeking for revenge on those who have made his life miserable? Or is his intention to persuade an individual to take that step to eternal life? Sometimes I come across movies I ask myself questions about afterwards. What the hell did I watch? And what was the ultimate meaning? What was it about for God's sake? "Jamie Marks is dead" is such a movie.

Jamie isn't exactly Mister Popularity at school. He's always a laughingstock. A mega scapegoat and doormat of the bullies in school. Nobody had any affinity with him and completely ignored him. Adam (Cameron Monaghan) has witnessed such harassment. He never participated in the bullying, but he never really intervened. Adam isn't exactly popular either, but thanks to his sporting achievements, he never suffered the same fate as Jamie. And then Jamie's body is discovered by Gracie (Morgan Saylor), an extravagant behaving teenage girl who collects stones. Spontaneously a friendship arises between Adam and Gracie, thanks to this unfortunate incident. It soon turns out that they both can see the wandering spirit of Jamie. Despite the warning of Jamie, who refuses to have any contact with this supernatural phenomenon, a kind of connection grows between the two boys.

"Jamie Marks is dead" is a difficult film. Especially if you try to understand the deeper meaning of it all. Is Jamie trying to create a friendship in this form of existence? Visible only to those who cared about him in a way? Because to be honest, everyone is pretty indifferent when it comes to his death in this community. Or is it an incomplete goal he ultimately wants to achieve? Could this goal be succeeding in winning Adam for himself? It's obvious Jamie feels something for him. He admired Adam during his running events. Ultimately, there is an odd sexual tension between the two. The way Jamie ecstatically reacts as Adam whispers a word into his ear or mouth. Or is it the symbolism of how Adam starts to discovers his own sexuality? Is this the reason why being intimate with Gracie isn't working out that well? Because of the appearances of Jamie?

"Jamie Marks is dead" is no self-evident movie. It is a bleak and depressing picture. A morbid movie with pretty crazy characters and situations. At first I thought this was a reflection of Adam's mental state. But this can't be, because Gracie can see dead Jamie as well. Not only the bizarre love triangle seems reasonable unworldly. The friendship that develops between Linda (Liv Tyler), Adam's mother, and Lucy (Judy Greer), a wacky woman who caused a road accident while being drunk after which Linda ended up in a wheelchair, isn't normal either. It's all rather incomprehensible (and not only because of the unintelligibly mumbling of Gracie). Most will look at this and say it's a waste of time and utter crap. Maybe I'm an odd guy, but I thought this was all quite intriguing.

Jamie Marks should stay dead
adi_20025 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A local boy is tormented by the ghost of a young man who was killed some time ago.

Watching this for about 30 minutes for me was interesting but after I reacher 80 minutes I had to stop it because I was bored. The idea is good combining mystery with horror elements although is not a scary film but when I see a ghost immediately I think of the horror genre. This is more like a drama with sad elements in it. Still there are some flaws about the death of Jamie is not elaborate the viewer known only that he was murdered. The young cast did their jobs very good because the acting was tolerable. The dark atmosphere adds some extra chills, but even so it doesn't save the boring story, those long scenes made me finish the film in the second day. If you are a patience person then this is for you.

Bottom line, a movie with both good and bad parts witch made me lower my vote cause of the boredom.

I Would Have Loved This More If . . .
Kaat122019 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie and how it skirts around the issue of Adam's sexuality. While he seems interested in his girlfriend, there is definite interest in Jamie. I like how they use Adam feeding Jamie words in place of consummating a sexual relationship. However, I am glad that they never took it further. It was a beautiful and confusing friendship.

That being said . . .

I took points off due to the deer hanging from the basketball hoop the entire winter. Please tell me they did not kill a deer just to stick it in a movie? Even if it were killed for food, it is disrespectful to leave it out that long.

This movie has a message that we should all be more compassionate toward each other, but you have a once-living thing strung up the entire movie and no one thinks twice about it.

I found it sad, disturbing, and distracting . . .

I almost stopped watching.

Dark but touching supernatural story
obit213-394-4222018 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I found this eerie story of a dead boy returning to the living in order to find love and friendship.....different and poignant. I do, however, have one complaint to make. There was no need whatsoever to show the fawn hanging from the goalpost! It has nothing to do with the plot and I found it disturbing. Cruelty to animals is real enough without using it in a film.

Please, producers and directors, don't use cruelty to animals in your films; it distracts me to the point I don't want to finish watching the movie, and I am not alone.

Thank you for considering my request.

Awesome! Another odd, wimpy protagonist?
anjacobs-7923814 August 2022
Why is it mandatory (these days) to make all leading males these pitiful outliers who slink around in the shadows and never speak their mind. Even worse is being inundated with these badass chicks who's bravery and strength are unparalleled in the modern world.

It's a thin supposition and certainly not representative of the world at any point in history.

Only in Death
LiamBlackburn1 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The first time Jamie becomes alive is in his afterlife. He consoles another dead girl. A girl no one cared about when she was alive. Completely mistreated by her parents. She is in perpetual limbo as she cannot forgive her parents for creating the hell on earth that she had to endure while she was alive. Adam gets to witness the maturation of Jamie as he begins to find his place in the afterlife. This is a fresh and thoughtful movie about what it means to be loved. Only in death does Jamie begin to feel loved by other human beings. He was treated like a piece of trash his whole life and literally pizzed on by others. Only in death, can Jamie begin to have a friendship, unfortunately he..is dead. Adam is not dead, and as much as Adam wants to maintain an emotional connection with Jamie, he has his waking life to live. It's a very sad movie. I wouldn't call it a horror movie. Definitely not a shocker. It's an intelligent, well-made movie.

Do You Have A Condom? Yes. On You? No.
wandernn1-81-6832743 August 2022
One thing that really annoyed me about this movie is the number of times the question was asked 'Why are you naked?' when the subject of discussion was obviously not naked. It's just a sad testament when we have to pretend people are naked in movies instead of just making them naked. Like the girl wearing a bra being the new definition of topless. Might as well put the dude in a bra too, it's just dumb.

Movies in the 70s were even better than that, and today we're supposed to be a more 'progressive' society when obviously we are not. We're a society of Idiocracy and cancelling. And pretending that great Presidents are somehow evil because they look out for their own country FIRST.

Overall, this was a weird movie. Annoying and interesting at times. Since I couldn't really tell if I liked it, and I know I didn't hate it, I'll give it 5/10.

This is worth a watch!
kriskaiser9 September 2014
A very nice piece of a movie. Sad and disturbing, but not a horror film. This movie should make you think about life and the meaning of it; The way we treat other people around us. It should make us remember our own mistakes and re-think them. It made me remember scenes out of my own school days. I turn almost 40 now, but that makes me sure- everybody above the age of 18, will definitely have similar memories. Love is a big message. Maybe sometimes we love to little or should show our feelings to other people more. I really did like that movie; The characters are well written and the storyline is perfect. Don't watch if you await a horror movie! It's more like a "coming of Age" Drama with a great message.

Deserves Better Rating
LineOfDuty31 August 2014
I really enjoyed this movie. There is no gore or stupid special effects, and is a drama more than a "scary" movie. The acting is good and the characters believable. I agree with the other user that this is a haunting film as It left me speechless and melancholy. Please give this film a chance-there are parts that my husband seemed to be bored with, like maybe they dragged out too much for him, but I found every minute to be intriguing, endearing, or slightly disturbing. I would watch this again but I need time to recover from watching it the first time. It took something out of me and I believe this is because the characters are so real and you feel their emotions.

A wonderful, wonderful movie with one big flaw
jm107015 April 2015
I LOVED this movie. It's about a couple of gay teenagers who don't get to know each other until after one of them dies. I don't understand why other online reviewers keep saying how sad it is, because to me it's marvelously positive, encouraging, romantic and satisfying. Those reviewers must think death is a big deal.

The story is fascinating and completely believable, which is extraordinary for a movie about the supernatural. The dialog is always perfect - economical and powerful. The direction, the acting by every actor in every role (especially Liv Tyler as Adam's neurotic mother and Noah Silver as Jamie - he's fantastic in a marvelously sweet, subtle and sexy performance), the cinematography, production design, sound, music, etc, could not be better. This is a fantastic movie.

The only huge flaw is the Frances character. She's unnecessary, contrived, unbelievable and very, very annoying. I almost quit watching when she became such a huge part of the story. The fact that I didn't, and that I'm giving it ten stars in spite of her, is testimony to how very, very good this movie is.

Well crafted, unusual, film.
ergot430 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert: You may want to watch the movie before continuing much farther. I will say without giving too much away that the pace of the movie is slow, but worth the watch regardless. We're too used to the "action packed" fast moving white bread standard Hollywood fare for some to stick with a slow but well crafted piece such as this. But I found it anything but boring. Here's a spoiler, one you will encounter soon into the movie, but you may want to watch before reading my thoughts. I was thrown a bit by the hanging dead fawn. I may have missed something, but never to my knowledge was any allusion made of it in the film. It was a bit of a distraction, wanting to make sense of it while trying to take in the plot line. Here's my take on it. Unless someone was engaged in illegal hunting and too lazy to tend to the game during the movie's duration, the reasonable conclusion is that this was a victim of the driver. The brother does seem to be a bit of a thug type in his actions (pushing the mother out of the way to enter the house after beating on his brother, though the beating was provoked) so he may simply have been the hunter. But if run over it is evidence of prior knowledge of the drunk driver's carelessness (she is referred to as being drunk when she hit the mother by Adam) and was hung there as a cautionary message for her, apparently ignored. This makes the accident somewhat more inevitable, I think. And about that- the mother did back into the roadway at a fast clip, in a hurry, so even though there is little sympathy shown for her other than by the mother, the driver was not entirely at fault. One thing I must counter after reading another review. I don't think the relationship between Adam and Jamie has anything to do with homosexuality. It is a deep friendship that we see develop, nothing more and nothing less. That is the theme, seen also in the friendship, though too lightly explored, between the mother and the driver who "paralyzed her." Gracie's character is there to counter this conclusion. Adam is very interested in her sexually, though every encounter we see is abruptly- frustratingly, for him, ended prematurely (always due to Jamie's presence, in some way, but not because of the "gay thing" but the need to work out his presence on a very different level. Jamie first appears to her, not Adam. He is drawn to her as the person who discovered his body. But she wants nothing to do with him, she makes this very clear, and does her best to instill this feeling into Adam. Adam sees him and is drawn to him because he was sympathetic to Jamie's plight when Jamie was being harassed by the boys at the school, but he did not act to help Jamie, which is why he is compelled to help him later, out of guilt. Jamie is I think not so much jealous of Adam when he is with Gracie, but jealous of the relationship, before his friendship with Adam solidifies. And Jamie has a relationship with Frances which verges on something boy-girl, certainly very caring when he takes her from Adam's house. The love aspect spoken of by Gracie that Jamie needs is something beyond the sexual, the "love a man can have for a man" a quote from Miller's "All My Sons" referring to the bond of soldiers in war, nothing to do with sexuality, or beyond sexuality.

I'll just sum up at this point. I see many levels to this film, with the relationships working in developing the theme that culminates in Adam and Jamie, their relationship and moving on with their respective paths. Quite an unusual movie experience in many ways, and well worth waiting out the pace of the film. Just one further note, concerning the "note." Somehow, according to some questions I have seen the upshot of it was missed by some. The big spoiler: Jamie did indeed commit suicide. Gracie hid the note because she did not want his death to be trivialized due to its being suicide. So, while Gracie could not or would not deal with Jamie's presence, as a ghost, she was sympathetic towards him, as a person.

Poor young Soul.
amber891285 September 2022
The film is very atmospheric, it's slow burning, which for many people will be a turn off right there. The movie is about acceptance, if not able to seek it in life can he in the afterlife. There's been movies before where certain people can see the dead but only a few. It makes me wonder about life, death, & people who a Schizophrenic, like the film A Beautiful Mind, if someone can be that incredibly intelligent, what else are they able to see.

We are willing to accept they can solve extremely complicated mathematical equations & other mind blowing things but as soon as they see people that aren't there or we can't fathom then they have a mental illness. Jamie Marks however wasn't an Imaginary friend, he was once a living breathing human being, but he left the world lonely, an outcast & in death felt the same emptiness. Without giving away spoilers the people who do see Jamie are rather outcasts themselves, perhaps not to the degree that Jamie was but still loners nevertheless! I think it's a good film, there's another ghost that has passed on that JMID focuses on for a small part of the duration of the film, but the message it is trying to convey is maybe when we leave this world we need to be at peace, if not we will go through eternity feeling the way we did when alive or will repeat the same pattern, the same one we followed exactly at the precise time when we left the world. I left off a couple of stars basically because of the woman the mother had befriended or rather who had befriended her. I suppose that was another lesson about forgiveness & letting go of anger or sorrow, but it does T delve into the reason why Soto me it deemed unnecessary!

The Deer IS Integral...
setgetsiin8 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Everything just STOPPED, was stagnated. This includes the deer. Mom Tyler got stopped by (drunk?) paralyzer Greer, time stood still. Everything was touched by a universal STOP...death, playing with death, that one ghost repeating that same day over and over...Frances was the saddest of all. Revenge is not amends, but she needed that horrible extension of time.

Not everyone gets the gift of stopping time, esp to make amends. Adam had his life stopped/on pause to develop a beautiful person that he wished he could have saved in life. The paralyzer with Mom, the forgiveness and moving on in what I thought was a lovely end for both those ladies. I am guessing Aaron and the deer: Stagnant. Can't you see it? Everything in Limbo with Jaime.

Or I could be just completely wrong, of course.

I really liked this one, I wish we all could have that time with our suddenly departed Coulda Been Moments. I don't know, I sort of fell in love with Jaime (just as a simple human being, seeking love/friendship). I'm a sucker for the limping underdog.

The sex scenes and even the older brother...I don't think they were nearly as integral as the deer. Other than being present in the background, they were wastes of time.

PS: I don't think the deer was real, for pete's sake...it was a symbol.

Kind of beautiful but maybe goes too far
bgaiv28 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's quite a lot to unpack with this film... it's very beautiful in a way but has one of the most heartbreaking and haunting "twists" I've ever seen quite late in the movie. Considering the already very sad subject matter, this kind of comes off cruel to the viewer and makes it a difficult movie to recommend. More on that later...

This film reminds me of another less known film called "The Dust Factory" in that you spend most of the movie with characters who may or may not be alive, but not in any kind of "fun" horror movie way. And because of the unrelenting (if subtle) haunting nature of Dust Factory, I could never watch that film twice, and it's hard to watch this twice too.

What is the "twist" here that is so heartbreaking? That Jamie wasn't murdered as you are led to believe, but he actually committed suicide. Personally, I found this devastating like I'd actually known the kid, and haunting in that I did indeed think about this a lot afterward.

After the incredibly somber bulk of the movie, getting hit with that just seems way too much and makes me very hesitant recommending the movie. (I can hear it know, "there's an important message" which usually means it's a poorly made film and/or it's a preach fest. There a couple very minor preaches but the film doesn't really have those problems, it just goes way too far.)

Still, it is a very beautiful film in its bleak northern winter setting. The acting is great and Cameron Monaghan completely nails his role and seeing (I think) everything from his POV works well. His character Adam's family feels very real.

Some downsides: * Jamie looks ridiculously like Harry Potter and this is non-stop distracting in a supernatural setting.

* The Frances ghost character almost derails the movie and feels like should have been either built out a lot more or cut to a creepy cameo. You definitely FEEL like the movie is derailing.

* What's with the deer? A reviewer noted a possible symbolic meaning for it which is interesting, but that tends to get lost when every time it shows up you're wondering if it's real and they killed it for the movie.

Fantastic Thought Provoker
samdaaxi8 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Jamie Marks is Dead is an oddly thrilling movie. It is not a fast film by any stretch of the imagination, but I do not think the movie should be criticized only on its speed.

The name of the piece may seem like a massive spoiler, but since you see the corpse of Jamie within the first few minutes of footage, I would say otherwise. I assumed the film to be a horror of some sort, but I was very wrong. Yes, there are supernatural elements, but that is not the central theme. I believe it was created to make you think and re-evaluate how you treat your fellow human, especially during high school; you don't know what a person is going through.

Adam, I found was a well-fleshed out character. He was moody, but not unbelievably so. His home life was unpleasant at best, with a wheelchair-bound mother, the woman that made her so constantly around, and a brother who despises him. He's not a popular boy, nor is he unpopular, he's simply there. He does run at school, which is his saving grace at school, the one thing he has talent in. I think he is still in the process of discovering himself, and discovering his sexuality, which I think is explored with Jamie. He's very much a believable character.

Jamie, I found I sympathized a lot with, as I was bullied in high school. And I think although this is a pure assumption, I think one of the reasons he was bullied so relentlessly could have been to the fact he was debating his sexuality. He obviously had a crush on Adam and admired him from afar. I think they are quite alike, in my opinion. I think Adam was aware, during their time together, of how Jamie felt about him. And he never took advantage of that; I think Adam was exploring it too. I do think there was a gay tinge to their friendship, and it is done in such a way that it isn't made to feel forced, but rather a natural evolution of their friendship. And the fact that Jamie was more alive when he was dead should not be ignored.

I think it is a great thought provoker, and it's one of my favorite movies in this genre. Reminded me of Let the Right One In, in its pacing.

I changed my mind
staver21 May 2022
Originally I said I didn't have much to add, other than I thought this movie deserved a better rating. After viewing it again, I've changed my mind. Noah Silver did an amazing job, more so when you consider he grew up in France. While I'm sure French schools have outcasts, his portrayal of an American "reject" was gut wrenchingly spot on. This movie broke my heart, but I can't stop watching it. I've seen Noah in Down a Dark Hall, which was good, but not as visceral as Jamie. I'll be looking up more of his movies.

Neurotic Casper
rodrigoalderete23 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
-Based on the Novel "One For Sorrow" by Christopher Barzak.

A Boy found dead by the river start to hunting.Jamie Marks is a geeky nerd, bully victim found dead by a girl called Gracie. This young couple starts making contact with the deceased. Adam gets in trouble with his family and run away with Jamie and they found a troubled ghost called Frances.

Sadly, Jamie's murderers never revealed. The movie is kind of slow, but good. You expect that the ghost is getting psycho and makes you think that if Adam leaves him, Jamie is gonna hurt him somehow.

This movie is eerie and cold. The development is good, the acting is exceptional. Unfortunately, you can think for one second that Jamie Marks is a gay ghost. But it only works on the imagination.

I recommend this movie for the originality of the elements. The story really works out for me, I had a lot of fun. Is a good movie indeed.

The main three seem familiar...
