Not exactly fresh out of the box, but worth watching!

Let's face it. We've seen all kinds of reality shows in the past. The world can not exist without one of these. The Hero is a show that questions the limits of a handful of normal people with uncountable problems in their everyday lives. The show, hosted by The Rock, examines the physical and mental abilities of these individuals. It tests them to the point that they break into nothing but pure human beings. When we walk down the street, we see people who we assume to be happy. But, are they really? Are they happy with what they have? Are they able to survive the challenges that their lives shove at them? Do you want answers? Here are a few people not afraid to reveal such things to America. In the end, it is America that decides the fate of these people! The Rock is not the judge here. He is only the host. He provides encouragement to the competitors and puts them through tough situations to see if they can survive. To me this show is entertaining. It has drama, action, adventure etcetera in it that make it impossible to not like! I will agree that it is similar to every other show, but I promise you that this one has its own differences!

What is a Hero?
neerood3 August 2013
The Hero sends a group of contestants to Panama for a series of physical stunt challenges. The rules are ambiguous and change on the fly. I appreciated that though, as it represents a much needed fresh departure for the format. But the ongoing ambiguity and rule changes will make many criticize The Hero's legitimacy - and rightly so.

The Rock is a surprisingly smooth and affable host for the show. He pops up and presents different 'temptations' to the players.

Superb editing even plays with the timeline and time scale a bit. Viewers don't always know right away what key decisions the players have reached about temptations and eliminations. This technique was effective - very effective - to the point I expect to see other programs copy it.

But the editing goes way too far in the challenges, to the point where it seems there's obvious fakery and rigging to create dramatic events.

The challenges all have unverifiable or unknown countdowns or puzzle solutions. Even gullible viewers have said the outcomes seem fake or rigged.

The casting is excellent as we have a collection of distinct and memorable players. The game and their living situation create an abundance of compelling tension and teamwork. This aspect is probably what made The Hero watchable in spite of the its seeming lack of legitimacy.

It becomes murky, yet water cooler friendly, as it presents some players as scum for falling to temptation, while other players are sentimental favorites for doing the same thing.

I never understood why one player who fell to temptations would be painted as heroic, while others who did the same thing with no harm to anyone else were cast as villains.

The challenges themselves were more of the same. More of those rope walks and climbs that have been triple safety rigged to require no player skill and remove even the slightest of risk. More harmless snakes and tearless tear gas.

The final winner was supposedly decided by public vote. I was left to wonder why a Hero should be someone who was the most casual in the aforementioned super safe quote-unquote challenges. I also pondered why it's heroic to turn down a cash temptation in hopes of building a bigger cash jackpot that you want to claim later. Is that a hero or a gambling addict?

Despite the apparently rigged nature of this show, the final assembly was interesting and different. For me at least, the villains and eventual Hero of this show were indeed its aggressive editors.

Finally a reality show I can watch.
bluesman-2029 June 2013
The Hero is a show getting average people together to do some pretty high risk things. From Playing with Snakes to rappelling down a bridge to swimming a mile in the wide open ocean. Or jumping off a building. Each contest starts off with a team of people going to find the clues for the Hero's challenge which is when one of them chosen by the team takes a challenge to do a stunt by his or herself. With a additional sum of money at stake on the last show it was sixty thousand. The winner of the Hero challenge can take the money or put it into a purse which grows and that's for the team. The Rock will show up during the challenges and Bribe team members and that tests their integrity and the team's trust. The Show is supposed to showcase the characteristics of what a hero is. And it's a good show that offers redemption and self sacrifice. All building blocks of what a hero should be. The Rock makes a great host for the show as it sums up what makes a hero a hero. Highly watchable Highly entertaining and highly enjoyable.

Rock's (executive producer) reality show!

This is the BEST REALITY show I have ever seen and I am a reality show junkie!!

I originally watched it because The Rock is the host! I am glad I did! He is funny and an inspiration!

I agree with the other posters that this is must see TV! I can't figure out why one reviewer gave it only a 2 rating??

This show should be shown in high schools and in colleges because it shows how people really are.

Last tidbit. Something about this show goes past just reality TV. Watching it made me access what would I REALLY do if I was faced with some of the choices given to the contestants in this show!! This show makes me want to overcome my own personal fears and anxieties in real life!!

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!

Started off good but then it became disappointing

This show had potential to be a successful TV show but after it got near the end of the series they sort of rushed it to a final episode where the last few contestants were voted by America or facebook.

I don't know why they didn't add more episodes for the final contestants maybe it was because of budget costs or low ratings but for me that was a total letdown. So let me tell you what I like about the show when it was going great, one was I liked the Rock and his philosophy and beliefs to be a hero and thats it.

Unfortunately what I didn't like was the way the challenges are handled out to be a hero. If they had challenges where they are feeding the poor, helping the sick or have scenarios of what they would do in a real life situation it would make sense to name the show "The Hero". Instead we got challenges thats only self worthy of a survivor game show, they were rappling off high sky buildings which they did a lot and some other running around. The only thing the show was doing determining who was a hero or not was by testing temptation for money or give the money to the hospital.

That doesn't make you a hero if your completing challenges just for the sake of it, just to prove to yourself. They portray money as if its the key to helping people by giving it to the hospital which is not their money to begin with its the sponsors or studio.

Would I recommend this show no. Im a rock fan but I still felt cheated they didn't finish the show properly.

The Hero: retitled The Biggest Waste of Time Ever
trblake18 July 2013
Oh my God this is bad.

It's yet another reality show only this time it's truly real.

Average people doing things their mothers and fathers told them not to ever do, but they still do it.

And there's the ROCK, trying to bribe them on camera.

To test them. Really?

The ROCK is going to test my morals? The ROCK will test my morals or your morals? Who is the ROCK to judge us?

His previous job was to put people in the hospital and now he's testing the morals of people?

Mr. Johnson should stick to what he does best, kicking the snot out of big guys in the ring.

As an actor or in this case host of a TV show, he lacks any proof that he actually can do something other than act like a bully.

Completely unimpressed.
Sruthi_Me21 December 2013
I saw the series premier of 'The Hero' on AXN and I was appalled. I love Dwayne. He's amazing and m a huge fan. But this show, it is just wrong. Just because people rappel down the sides of tall buildings and don't grab money doesn't make them a hero. Adventurous people are just that - adventurous. Fire fighters, ambulance drivers, UN's workers - now those people are heroes, real heroes, worth being called one. Why? Cause, they do not do it for money or fame or for their chance to be on a reality show. They put their life on the line all the time to save another.

Bottom line - Another reality show with stunts. Only this time the title is gruesomely inappropriate.
