Utter garbage… Proudly presented in pointless 3D
Coventry21 April 2014
Movies like "Baby Blues" seriously make me angry. Who makes this kind of garbage and why, and – most importantly – what were the good people of the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Films thinking to schedule this piece of crap on a Saturday evening at 11 pm?!? This film is absolutely nothing at all! A horror flick without frights, a thriller without thrills and a family drama without emotion. The festival wrongfully advertises "Baby Blues" as a taut thriller in which Chucky's Chinese cousin wreaks havoc in Hong Kong. Yeah, right. This is a nonsensical and totally boring story about a horrible young couple (he composes pop music, she writes a blog for girls) that moves into a new house and finds an ugly left behind doll. Obviously the doll homes some sort of malignant spirit, but it must be the most boring one ever. The doll inspires the husband to write twisted songs (oh, so scary!) and occasionally points out its finger in the audience's direction. When the wife loses one of her twin babies during the delivery, she sinks into a postnatal depression and sees the doll as her stillborn baby. The plot is dumb, the characters are irritating and nothing makes any sense. Also, this is yet another lousy 3D flick where the 3D effects haven't got any added value whatsoever! The 3D was just a stupid excuse to make us purchase special glasses and spend extra money, bah! Don't waste any time or money on this rubbish, just as I won't waste anymore words on it.

so bad it is good

This is a pretty dumb movie....but my best friend and I laughed so hard it hurt the entire time and it was worth the watch. It is kind of like Birdemic:shock and terror in that sense. It is super cheesy. When I saw the thumbnail on Netflix, the movie looked pretty creepy. I was hoping for an eerie doll killer movie, but the doll is just too funny for words. Give it a watch yourself.

The plot is also a confusing mess. They replay this CGI animation over and over through the film. This is one of the worst horror movies I have seen since Alter Ego and fear house. The best part of the movie is the sage like homeless guy that knows all.

It's no Child's Play

All I wanted from Baby Blues is another killer doll movie, whether is be like Chuckie or even Annabelle, but it's not. Baby Blues is about a cursed doll who's power is to curse movies with awful and unnecessary CGI. Seriously, they animate a leaf falling, a guy breaking through a car window, and so many other things that would be much easier and look much better with practical effects. Wouldn't it be so much easier to drop a real leaf instead of animating a terrible looking CGI leaf? This is confusion is the main theme of the movie. Is it supposed to be a comedy? There are objectively stupid and goofy lines and scenes that seem to be attempts at humor shoved between ultra serious ones. The acting is pretty bad, although I guess Raymond Lam is okay, but every character is badly written and motivations make no sense. Characters just kind of do things. Even the characters relationships make no sense. There is a homeless man that lives across the street in a ramshackle shelter, who the male main character calls his uncle, his wife and sister in law seem to have no idea who he is and the male main character certainly doesn't act like that's his uncle. Even the audio is wrong as the dialog often doesn't match the character's mouth movements. Audibly, I can't tell it's ADR, but visually, is clearly doesn't match. The story itself is probably the worst part and everything I've mentioned so far is absolutely terrible. A young couple moves into a new house and the old tenants left behind a single box of random things (just because I guess) and the wife decides to keep a weird looking doll from the box. The trailers and even the back of the Blu-Ray make it seem like the doll is going to run around and kill people like a Good Guy Doll, but instead it kind of just psychically makes bad things happen? Nothing it does is cool or interesting. None of the movie is scary or compelling. Everything is just awful. Could it have been made with the intention of being a "good bad movie"? Sure, maybe, but it isn't; it's just a bad bad movie.

I don't understand the negative reviews

Warning: Spoilers
Sure, this film is nothing spectacular, but come on. It's a film about a haunted doll. If you started this film expecting something grandiose, then of course you'll be disappointed.

I went into this expecting a nice little horror flick with a doll. And I got what I wanted. The pacing was nice, the acting was good and the overall execution was pretty spot-on for the genre.

A woman is expecting twins, one dies during childbirth and the mother suffers with the delusion that the doll is her other son because no one told her that one of her sons died. Is it the doll causing it? Is it all in the mother's mind? This movie does what Chinese horror does: gives you a nice little spook with some realism tossed in to make it more - I dunno - believable? If I had to give one gripe, it would be the very end - and I mean the last few seconds. Those who have seen it know what I'm referring to. Everything in this movie was what I like with East Asian horror, then that tidbit happens, which is so American. But, like I said, I still enjoyed this flick.

Don't go in expecting something like Child's Play because it's nothing like that. Don't go in expecting a slasher. Go in expecting a movie about a haunted doll with some psychological elements thrown into the mix.
