You should watch the series first!
ashmay-7401718 December 2022
I'll watch anything with Jason Bateman in it and I was total unaware of the series. I was a bit confused why it was a little clunky at first so I paused and looked it up to then realized it was improv.

I finished it and actually liked it. However, I went back and binged the series to get a good idea what I was watching, and then watched this one again, and loved it!

Once you realize they are basically clueless, you can enjoy the reactions.

You have to just understand what it is first.

I feel like some of the low ratings were either because they were confused like I was or don't enjoy this type of comedy.

You're not rating an Oscar genre movie or even a typical comedy. You're watching sketch and should probably just take it for what it is.

Hopefully they do more of these
AlbertsTaylor23 June 2023
Batman and Bateman, of course, brought it and Maya Rudolph is adorable. She looked like she was having fun and looked hilarious in her basketball uniform. The scene with Sean Hayes breaking character during mouth to mouth had me cracking up. Showing Marshawn Lynch's scare Bateman was hilarious as well.

So, I've heard of Pete Davidson, obviously and I'm aware he is a comedian.... This was the first time I've ever seen him in anything and wow what a disappointment. The guy pretty much stood there, smiling and reacting, like he was an audience member.

Aren't you a professional comedian...? I would be surprised if anyone said that they liked his appearance in this... at least he was only in it for the last ten minutes or so.

Please do more of these Arnett. They are fun to see the actors doing improv.

Santa exist and someone murdered him lol
springeraldmeza23 December 2022
If you are a fan of Improv and The Murderville series you will fall right in line (unscripted) and enjoy this short series. If Escape Rooms were to turn into improv style puzzle this will be it! It's interactive, funny and quick on your feet.

If you have not seen Murderville or a fan of improv, watch this episode because it's pure comedy and it's less than an hour ( 52 minutes).

And if you do not like it, just can make up the 52 minutes that you lost by scrolling through your phone for hours.

Will Arnett and Jason Bateman are great, I sense some Arrested Development character feel on their improv. Maya Rudolph was her Saturday night live self. So Watch Murderville and Who Killed Santa and trust me you will not regret it.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

having some stupid fun
SnoopyStyle23 December 2022
Detective Terry Seattle (Will Arnett) takes on Jason Bateman as his new trainee. They go to the mayor's office party. The lights go out and Santa is murdered. Johnny Blaze (Sean Hayes) is the volunteer Santa Claus. Pete Davidson and Maya Rudolph later join as more trainees.

It's stupid fun. Bateman, Rudolph, and Davidson are all kept in the dark with the script. They are essentially doing improv while Will Arnett throws comedic roadblocks in their way. Bateman is a sarcastic b and he gives as good as he takes. Sean Hayes is the one who cannot stop laughing. He is a giggle machine. Rudolph is as quick as anyone else. It's nice for these guys to have some stupid fun.

Not as entertaining as the original
kaideneve21 December 2022
I'm a huge fan of Arnett and Bateman, and gave a perfect 10 to the original series because it absolutely cracked me up at every turn, specifically Conan, Marshawn Lynch, and Kumail Nanjiani.

I didn't laugh quite as much in this one, and I think maybe part of it was the format of having 3 'detectives' at once. Bateman had some hilarious scenes before Maya Rudolph showed up, and then I think it just got too... complex. They couldn't really play off of each other.

Don't get me wrong, Rudolph is great, particularly in Idiocracy and Brooklyn 99, but in terms of creative improv she was kind of a dud. Didn't really laugh much at anything she did.

And then for some dumb reason they brought in Pete Davidson for the last 10 minutes, who I still to this day struggle to see why anyone thinks is funny. Just basically came in and messed the whole thing up. Truly the Britta of the comedy universe.

Started off great, ended with a fizzle. I sort of wish that the guest stars would have tried a bit more and gotten more into it. I've seen dozens of live improv shows and it's easy to tell when people are dialing it in.

And he seems like a chill guy, but for the love of Pete, no more Davidson.

If you like Murderville, AD and Smartless theres no way you won't like this

Warning: Spoilers
I'm English, a massive fan of the UK original, think Arrested Development is the cleverest sitcom ever and really enjoy the chemistry of Jason and Will on their Smartless podcast (Sean also is involved in this ep which has some great moments.

This to me is the closest vibe to the UK version, definitely thanks to the perfect straight man Jason Batement who really gets it. I feel a lot of the US celeb detectives seem to play up to much and make it a but showy but Jason is perfect. I could have actually just had him and not Maya to be honest, even though I love Maya and she's OK in this.

Also had Eliza Coupe in it from the second best sitcom: Happy Endings - yay

No need for the blonde guy to turn up (pete?) - no idea who he was but I guess he was on an earlier American episode that I don't remember, didn't add anything yo it - weird addition

Anyway very funny, worth your time.

10/10 for Bateman... Maya Rudolph shouldn't do improv
seljangryphon29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Jason Bateman had some hilarious moments. He's amazing at improv. Maya Rudolph was awkward and clunky, and just kind of overacting for comedic effect, but wasn't able to pull it off, in my opinion. I don't think that she and Jason Bateman play well off of each other, at least when it comes to improv comedy. I would like to see the original series, which I have not. I think that having three detectives working on solving the case also sort of makes it weird and not funny. And why does the last guy (Pete Davidson) arrive so late in the investigation? He was not at ALL funny, by the way. There are pieces missing since different characters arrived at different times, which would have made it impossible for them to solve the case, anyway.

Good ending
Archbishop_Laud17 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't really that funny until the last five minutes, the scene where they guess who the killer was.. Until then, it's a lot of hammy improv stuff (talk in French, pretend you're Bulgarian). The unscripted element pays off at the end though ("He was a quarterback and then he was Santa").

I do like that it is short, though, And there really was a mystery after all. I didn't pick up on any of the clues and neither did the actors (or neither did Jason Bateman, who was the only one there for the key interview). Bateman himself delivers a few good lines (like when he chastises Davidson for laughing at the fake character name).

I created an IMDb just to rate this
chrisrichardson-7607715 December 2022
Having never seen any of the Murderville series, I stumbled across this on Netflix, and I am SO happy I did. It is silly, it is nonsensical and it is improv at its very best. Will Arnett is incredibly funny and quick-witted and keeps the humour going throughout. The mini breaks in character by all of the actors keep an element of improv authenticity to it, which you can't help but chuckle at. The cameos from sports stars were great, and hats off to Kurt Braunohler who went "all out" to throw the actors off and keep the laughs coming.

All in all, it's worth committing 52 minutes of your life to.

I'm still not sure why Pete Davidson bothered showing up.

Original is Better.
DoTheScarn18 December 2022
As someone who is a big fan of Murderville (both American and British versions) and loves the premise and improv of the show, it pains me to say that this just isn't it. We were so excited to watch, and as always Will Arnett nails it, but the guest stars were pretty bad. I will say Jason Bateman does a good job and had me laughing. And if he had been the only guest star, it probably would have been a pretty good special. But then comes in Maya Rudolph (who I usually love) and, without a script, can apparently only do terrible accents and giggle. There were so many prompts from Will Arnett, way more than in the original show, that reached too hard for laughs. It was like watching a high school improv class do exercises. The comedy was forced and exhausting in the same way SNL becomes exhausting. And if that wasn't bad enough... in walks Pete Davidson, who doesn't even try. There is nothing worse than watching a show where the whole premise hangs on people being good sports and playing along-- and having someone come on who is too cool for school to be a part of it. He's like the kid in class that doesn't listen... and instead of being able to do his loosely scripted show, Will Arnett spends the last 10 minutes trying to keep Pete from blowing the whole thing up, which he manages to do anyway. This special had so much potential. Watch for yourself, some people are really enjoying it... I'll be holding out for more episodes of the original.

Just Funny
The_Movie_Sponge16 December 2022
I genuinely hope this gets picked up for additional episodes.

The joy derived from this show is at it's heart not about the story; it's not about how good the improv is. It's about the experience, and it's just funny.

Everyone involved is outwardly having a good time. Unless you're sporting a cold dead heart that's been stabbed by a well-licked candy cane, you should be too.

I've enjoyed the spectrum of all the guests and the different ways they've handled being thrown into the fire every single time.

Specifically though, this Christmas special delivered. Phenomenal chemistry all around. If you like Maya Rudolph and Jason Bateman, you're getting full blown Maya and Jason.

Talking specifics would cheapen the jokes, so I'll just say my biggest laugh of the entire run of this show happened in this episode.

9/10.

Just ok
willz18717 December 2022
Loved the Murderville series with Will Arnett. Probably had too high of hopes with this special. Had a few laughs. The format change was odd. Its no spoiler to say Pete Davidson makes an appearance who ive never understood why he is popular. He doesnt even try to entertain. Isnt he in the entertainment business? Too busy being himself to contribute to this nor when he was on SNL. Former SNLer Maya Rudolph adds something new as the first guest who i presume has an improv background. Bateman is totally game and pretty good. Never found him funny though in anything he does. All in all against the other episodes its not the best, not the worst.

Who Killed Santa? (2022)
nebohr16 December 2022
We thought a warning might be in order; very first thing. So: This is not quite up there with Agatha Christie mysteries. Not even close. What it is is some goofy, dumb Christmastime humor that will both amaze and entertain the viewer. My wife says: "strike the amaze part" but I will ignore her and post this while she's out.

YAY another "Murderville Murder Mystery". Both my wife and myself love these productions. It's always easy to tell which actors excelled in their improvisational acting classes, yes? No?

We pity whoever gets stuck doing the French or Italian C/C translations.

P. S. Is Jason Bateman doing a robot imitation? Or a chicken?

Christmas got slaughtered!
daviddarabian16 December 2022
Terry Seattle is great! He's funny and improvise in-character basically dragging the two main actors along trying to get them to do or say something funny. Jason might understand humor in theory but not in practice. Maya acts like a twelve year old who giggles when she hears the word poo, and thereby completely makes a promising improv-scene completely childish. And in steps Pete. If you are watching it during Christmas, I'm sorry, but it just got ruined.

I really like the whole concept of the show but the guest actors here makes it silly, behaving as if it's a show made for them just to goof around in, and not for any viewers. I get that it can be hard to keep a straight face in some scenes, but the immense overacting... Come on.

French Cop, Italian Cop
apmulhearn21 December 2022
This was exactly the Christmas cheer I needed.

I've missed Murderville and been awaiting a Season 2 announcement since the day Season 1 debuted.

Jason Bateman and Will Arnett are an incredible team. Arrested Development fans - there's a shout out or two for you along the way.

The assistant was hilarious. Pete Davidson was hilarious. Maya Rudolph gave a solid performance. Sean Hayes was hilarious. Marshawn Lynch stole the show, just like he did in Season 1.

While this obviously doesn't guarantee future episodes, it was a great revitalization of the show.

Cast is amazing. Improv during show was hilarious. Insanely grateful to have found this.

17 minutes in and it was enough of this garbage
yasmeenshabana17 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I turned it off less than 20 min in. To be honest I was excited to watch this movie because I like Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes. Then it was very disappointing. It really hurts to see them do these kinds of silly and not in a funny way movies. Probably actors need money to live too. The dialog is not funny. Lots of sexual references that are disgusting more than funny.. naked fat guy with his ballz and butt-hole showing not funny. After a few minutes watching, I felt like I fell into a swamp and needed a shower. Yuck! I hope they can make something more interesting in the future all the three of them together. Not worth it.

GREAT stress reliever. Stupid fun!
mark-7838315 December 2022
Arnette was born to do this show. He seems like he could do this in his sleep, he is so natural at it.

This was probably the mist fun episode of the series. And partnering up Bateman and Rudolph was fun due to seeing them bounce off of each other instead of being left alone.

I was like an excited kid watching this because it was the first time in a long while that I just shut my brain off and had fun for an hour. It is just stupid, silly fun.

And it would have been perfect except for Pete Davidson showing up last minute. My constant grin literally sunk when he showed up. I'm sick of seeing his face. His 15 minutes really should be up by now. I'm tired of seeing someone who isn't funny, and just kills time with random laughing instead of being professional, getting so many opportunities. HE'S NOT FUNNY and he sucks at everything. Let him go away.

This is good fun!
OwensDad116 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This has some very funny moments. Will & Jason have incredible chemistry together. Having a Marshawn Lynch cameo was awesome! I thought Maya was a great addition as well. She & Jason both just go along with any absurd idea or premise. Their improv isn't always a home run but, for the most part, it was very well done. One nitpick, Sean Hayes. Much like their podcast together, Sean added nothing here. I realize his character is dead but seeing him under that Santa beard led to an audible ugh for me. I just have no interest in seeing him on screen. The bit with the sports reporter doing the interview naked was brilliant! Will & Jason did all they could to hold it together. Jason just rolling with it was fantastic.

And this is what the first season of Murderville missed. Too many guest stars who couldn't just let go and get in on the humor. Everyone involved in this special bought in and had tremendous fun with whatever they were given.

Who killed humor?
verybiglebowski-8818720 December 2022
Sometimes I wonder, why such a film exists, and who did believe in it, to invest some money? There is virtually nothing funny, as my Z-Gen would say - Cringe! If you like to feel ashamed for everyone on the set, than go for it, otherwise, better protect your impression of Bateman and co.

The concept itself is like reality show and hidden camera would try to have a baby, but Dumb abd Dumber won't let them. I would really like to meet people who are lughing on these jokes, they might know some good stuff.

There is a great humor, solid humor, sarcasm and dead humor. Who killed it? Watch for the answer.

MORE Murderville please!
cmatzenauer18 December 2022
These are absolutely fantastic! Massive kudos to the guest actors and Will Arnett for their performances.

Jason Bateman and Maya Rudolph were geniuses in this episode with Jason barely chuckling ocassionally at the natural silliness that was unfolding.

I laughed so hard at one point I was crying. This is not for folks looking for slapstick humour - this is dark sarcastic comedy at its finest! I imagine the negative reviews are from folks who just aren't into sarcasm.

The subtle nuances and clues and set touches really keep you on your toes to keep looking for the details!

Please - make more of these - for every season! They are fantastic!

Total Tripe
guyzradio24 December 2022
One reviewer said "not quite up to Agetha Christy." Whoever thought up this "project" isn't worthy of reloading the ink in Agetha's fountain pen. The real mystery is how any of the cast could be enticed to appear in what is a painful, hour-long extension of what would make the worst Saturday Night Live skit in history (and they have aired some doozies). Are they really that desperate for a paycheck?

For one thing, Jason Bateman can only play one character: Jason Batement. His quippish line delivery is always the same, regardless of the movie, and it gets boring pretty quickly. Jason never gets lost in the character. The character gets lost in Jason.

When Pete Davidson shows up, he seldom adds anything. Instead of trying to be an actor, perhaps Pete should be content with being famous for being friends with someone famous for nothing more than being famous.

This is NOT improv at its best. It's a bunch of people who can't improvise thinking that they can. Reviews often contain the lament "X hours of my life I'll never get back." Avoid this mess and waste your time some other way.

Ho, ho...oh no! Santa's dead!
ajmillernz16 December 2022
Santa's dead. Yep, gone, lying on the floor of the City Hall impaled by a giant candy cane!

But who would murder Santa, let alone in a room full of people, and then get away with it?! Or will we manage to find the killer before the presents are due to be delivered to the orphanage?

Considering from my neck of the woods in New Zealand I had never heard of Murderville, I went into this blind, not knowing what to expect.

It kicks off with a short introduction of Jason Bateman and Maya Rudolph informing us they are here with no script, and zero idea of what to expect, other than what costumes they are given to wear on set. Kind of reminds me of the Australian show 'Thank God you're here' with a bit of Agatha Christie thrown in the mix. Already, I was somewhat familiar in knowing at least that this would be a fun ride!

Our glue holding this awesome pair together and guiding them through their unscripted escapades is none other than Will Arnett, whom I absolutely love in Arrested Development. Turns out he is in all the prior Murderville series which this is based on, so I must get to watching all of those!

We quickly learn that this show is probably for the most of it, filmed quite quickly with few takes, which works brilliantly at catching the realism of what this show is about...having fun telling a story. I get that feeling as the actors tend to break character, a lot. This is what helps make this an absolute Christmas miracle of a film, it is simply hilarious. You can see how much fun they are all having at constantly trying to push the envelope and make each other lose it. The chemistry and then the comedy that evolves between these 3 is fantastic, especially Jason Bateman, will he ever forgive himself for licking the milk from the cats bowl?!

But without Arnett, who plays Terry Seattle, the show couldn't be what it is. No wonder he helms the series, when he and Bateman were interrogating Channel 5 broadcaster Jim Trently, and he broke character laughing, I laughed the hardest I have all year. This scene alone is simply fantastic, as we can see clearly that Bateman was in no way prepared for what was unfolding in front of his eyes, literally.

Then our next suspect the assistant to Johnny Blaze (Santa) Mia Briggs is interrogated, which is when Maya is introduced. I thought the first suspect did it but suddenly all is not as it seems as there is something off about Mia and her relationship with Johnny. And get ready for the funniest interrogation of good cop, bad cop where I think Maya takes the cake with her French cop impersonation.

Meanwhile, Terry ends up in the air vents trying to locate the killer, Bruce Willis Die Hard style, and directs the next scene through walkie talkies linked to Bateman's and Rudolph's ear pieces, guiding them with what to say to the third and final suspect, Donna Foccacia - Restaurateur, whom brings us another clue as to who the killer may, or may not be.

Time to line up our suspects, but not before a final guest appearance with which they too will help decide who the killer is, even though they have no idea about what has or even is happening. This guest adds a lot to this show with their quirky uncontrollable laughter. A great way to round out an awesome 50 odd minutes of Christmas cheer.

Did the kids get their presents, and did Santa's murderer come forward? Unwrap this show and find out, it is without a doubt the best fun in under an hour!

"OK, don't be distracted by all this Christmas crap!"
classicsoncall17 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
OMG, I can't even describe how bad this was. There's a gimmick involved in the film whereby Jason Bateman and Maya Rudolph aren't given a script, so they have to improvise their lines throughout. That would be fine, the idea is OK, but the execution here on everyone's part was simply terrible. The plot involves the murder of a department store Santa Claus (by a pointy candy cane no less!), and it's up to Murderville Mystery detective Terry Seattle (Will Arnett) to solve the crime before a passel of kids arrive to receive their Christmas presents the next morning. Jason Bateman isn't too bad, he's about the only one putting any thought or effort into his role. Maya Rudolph is pretty much clueless throughout, and while I'm not familiar with Pete Davidson, his presence solely involved laughing through every scene he was in to the point of annoyance. Come to think of it, Tawny Newsome as Mayor Palmer was pretty annoying too, it felt like she was reading her lines off a cue card someplace. For sports fans, you've got Marshawn Lynch in a quick cameo, but for the rest of it, it's a nonsense story that strikes the lowest common denominator in just about every scene. If you want to watch a bad Christmas movie, at least try "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" and be slightly amused. I can't say the same here.

Ho Ho Ho!
JayWolfgramm24 December 2022
I am a big fan of improv humor, when done correctly it can be some of the funniest reactions, because it is coming across 100% genuine. The guys from "Whose Line is it Anyway?" are the gold standard of improv comedy. Comedy is always a very subjective thing, and improv comedy is very hit or miss, but when it hits, it is hilarious. This movie had me howling in laughter several times throughout the film.

The actors in "Whose Line" are definitely more talented in improv, but the actors in Murderville's inability to do improv is part of the charm. There is an actor playing a dead body, and he can not keep a straight face while playing dead.

Along with being funny, the show is also a solid mystery. The audience gets all the necessary clues to solve the mystery in the show.

I had a ton of fun with this movie, and if you are a fan of mysteries, comedies, Christmas and of course improv, I highly recommend this movie. Santa may have been killed, but I still had a very merry Christmas.

Bateman & Rudolph for the win
d_penn3 January 2023
This is not high-brow humor. It's the dumb bottom of the bucket silly type of comedy. I found myself laughing in spite of thinking this way. Watching Jason Bateman introduce himself as a former actor to Terry Seattle as he is shown the ropes of how to be a good detective was a great start. Straight to business, Detective Terry has Bateman dressed in an elf costume to blend into the festivities at a department store. Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Mystery will be a hit for some and a massive fail for others. The title is enjoying almost rave reviews since its release on the Netflix streaming platform. I do recommend it.
