Just some pro-life propoganda
engelinamom16 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie because the Netflix description was interesting and definitely caught my attention since I am a huge when it comes to pro-choice. The idea of a unborn child coming to haunt the parents was a super interesting idea to me and I loved the idea. Abortion is a very serious and sensitive topic that I feel like this movie did not handle with care. I felt like this movie was trying to shame women for having an abortion. I feel like this film was so focused on the horror aspect- which I can understand since it is a horror movie, but I feel like they left out the emotional part of having an abortion/losing a child. The pacing of the movie felt really odd as well. The ending seemed very random and rushed. Very unexpected which I usually don't mind a surprise but it could've gone in a much more meaningful direction. For the first 30 minutes, it did not feel like the plot was really developing. The last 30 minutes is where you really get the climax and the confusing ending and it was so rushed. I hated how almost every character but the abortionist (she was my favorite character) shamed women for having an abortion. I appreciated the abortionist for saying that she was helping struggling women and telling the fetus' souls' that they would be reborn into a loving family. This film does do a good job at highlighting the dangers of having an illegal abortion but it does not highlight how important it is for women to be able to have a choice. I say this film did not handle the subject of abortion with care because there was a huge lack of grieving in the movie. I kept on waiting for the characters to at least apologize and possibly show some remorse to the souls of their unborn child for not being able to raise them but that never happened. The scene where the guy holds the fetus disguised as his daughter and the fetus asks him why he didn't love her was very touching and powerful. The resolution I was hoping for was to see the unborn children rest in peace. I actually felt sorry for the unborn child even though we don't see them that much. I think the unborn child was a very interesting character and we (the audience) can really see how hurt they felt about being abandoned by their families.

Maybe the story was better than the movie.
Patient44410 December 2015
It wasn't awful, but it sure was boring, filled with plot holes and so little horror in it.

Okey, let us begin: the acting was overall OK towards sometimes bad, the plot was not strange considering Asian horror cinema but the execution was lousy, the effects weak, a lot of cheesy moments mixed with plenty of chichee style. I can't believe it is considered a horror, cause I had to look real deep to find it.

Anyway, at the end, I will not recommend it, but surely I won't bash it either, it's a movie like so many others I've seen. No horror, a lot of drama, and probably, possibly, a so called life lesson here.

Cheers!

Interesting Subject, Poor Presentation
masterurza-244858 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film touches on a very controversial subject: abortion. I'm personally a bit of a pro-choicer myself, but I found some of the pro-life ideas to be fascinating just because of the way the movie presented the subject. My issue with this film is not the subject of the story or the fact that they went the horror route with a serious topic. It's what feels like a lack of effort on the script writers' parts and over-ambitious CGI. As a horror fan, I felt like the script was very sloppy. They were trying to convey a serious topic in a scary way, but it felt like they were focused more on the topic of abortion and just threw together a horror aspect to make it... horror. Granted, there were some awesome scenes that did the film as a horror movie justice. And the ending was very clever, creeped me out. However, a few good scenes and scares don't make up for an ultimately sloppily-made plot. Altogether I think the movie is very much worth watching at least once, for the back story on it all. Horrifically, the whole plot of this movie stems from a real string of over 2,001 abortions in Taiwan. There are some very good scenes to convey what was happening with the abortionist and the undertaker involved. However, I feel they could have conveyed their message much better.

The true story is sad, but the movie unwatchable

Warning: Spoilers
So its based on true life event where they found so many aborted fetuses in 2002 or something, just without the ghost haunting thing.

Where do i begin...why did Kwans friend just abounded her after the abortion, so irresponsible.

The story was alright till the illegal abortion surgeon got attacked by this laughing aborted fetus ghost that try to stick a metal into her.

I wanted to stop watching the movie when the dad got attacked by hundreds of aborted fetuses, the dumbest scene in the whole movie...

The moral of the story - wear protection or you will be attacked by fetuses and get paralyzed...?

No story, no horror, just an excuse to scare women into accepting their bodies are tools to make babies

Where's the story?
presley-956-4322005 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The "horror" aspect doesn't even come in until the last 20 minutes of the film. Almost the entire thing is graphic imagery of women getting abortions and rubber fetuses. The "true story" is that there were 2,002 fetuses found in Bangkok, but obviously no one was attacked by the spirits of any of them. It's almost laughable that the writer thought this would be a good "story". It just takes the stereotypical deceased child ghost movie but writes it as fetuses instead. As if something like that would at all have the mental capacity to haunt or terrorize something. The scene where Trai is holding what he thinks to be Yaimai but is actually their unborn "child" and it speaks? Come on. Also what was with the plot twist at the end? What was the point? Whatever this is just trying to guilt trip people into not getting abortions. The entire thing feels like something a church would show teens to scare them away from sex. Only someone who is pro life would actually enjoy this film because all they see is the "meaning" and gloss over the fact that there's no real story.

50 Shades of WHAT?
aeongale24 June 2020
I just wanted to watch a random horror movie on Netflix. Not sure what I was getting into. Odd message at the start about consequences and morality, possibly not translated to the best degree. Thought maybe due to the subject matter it was a standard government warning. Anyway, young girl starts hearing voices and other minor spooky things happen. Not very riveting until it goes full bananas the vengeful foetuses. This is one of the most f'ed up things I've ever seen. The part I find most interesting about this film is, until near the end, I couldn't tell if it was conveying a pro-life message or highlighting the health issues caused by abortion being illegal. They really shot their message in the foot. So yeah, it's pro-life horror flick and it's as wonderful as it sounds. I'm amazed the outrage brigade haven't lobbied Netflix to remove this.

A somewhat disturbing and visceral horror movie...
paul_haakonsen12 July 2020
I was given the chance to sit down and watch "The Unborn Child" (aka "Sop Dek 2002") here in 2020. Now, it should be said that I had not even heard about this 2011 movie from writers Poj Arnon and Thanadon Nuansutthi before getting the chance to actually physically sit down and watch it. But it being a Thai horror movie was actually enough to catch my interest.

Well, I will say that "The Unborn Child" is definitely not your average run-of-the-mill Thai horror movie. Especially so because director Poj Arnon is definitely going well beyond what you would expect to see in a horror movie. Mind you, that "The Unborn Child" can be a very visceral and visually disturbing movie to some viewers, and that is why I think that this is not your average horror movie. Personally, I don't mind the way that director Poj Arnon took the movie, because this is, after all, only a movie meant for entertainment purposes.

The storyline in "The Unborn Child" was actually good. There were some genuinely creepy and disturbing moments throughout the course of the storyline, which made it quite well worth to sit through the movie. And I like that writers Poj Arnon and Thanadon Nuansutthi actually had managed to concoct a storyline that wasn't weighed down by being overly predictable.

Now, the ending of the movie was a bit cliché, I will say that much. Of course, I am not going to reveal the ending. But I wasn't particularly much a fan of the way the movie ended.

For a horror movie, then "The Unborn Child" proved to be adequately entertaining. It is more of a creepy and disturbing type of horror movie, than it is a jump scare horror movie. And it deals with some topics that definitely leaves you with a lasting impression.

The acting in the movie was quite good, and I enjoyed the performances put on by the actors and actresses, as it really helped to bring the storyline to life on the screen.

The special effects in the movie were adequate, although the CGI animated babies were just atrocious to behold, and that was something that served more of a blow to the movie, than it served as a thing that helped the movie along in any way. Horror movies definitely need to have proper CGI if making use of computers to bring something forth on the screen.

My rating of "The Unborn Child" is a six out of ten stars. I was adequately entertained. And if you enjoy Thai horror movies, it is actually quite well worth to sit down and watch "The Unborn Child" if you are given the chance to do so.

Solid and highly enjoyable Thai adaptation
kannibalcorpsegrinder21 April 2019
Following a weird string of deaths, a photographer and his wife grow concerned about their daughters' claims that an invisible friend is behind it, and when several local classmates also reveal they're suffering similar incidents it all leads back to a gruesome secret buried under their noses.

From the very start, this one proves to be quite an enjoyable topical effort. Among it's more entertaining aspects here is the manner in which it touches on its topical references. The subject of an abortion caused by an epidemic of teen pregnancies is hammered into us from the very start, as the shriveled corpse of an aborted fetus is waved at the camera before unceremoniously thrown into the trash. Likewise, the scenes with the reporters making the connection before the dead bodies and the spate of illegal abortions create a rather intriguing viewpoint. That this procedure to get rid of them is so commonplace the act is considered routine and treated flippantly is quite shocking and creates a strong commentary on the youth. As well, that there's a rather thrilling supernatural angle to play off is wholly appreciated. This creates a fine atmosphere through the lowest possible approach, hearing the sound of a baby's voice out of nowhere. That the characters react to its presence makes it genuine, and despite the playful nature of the giggling, there's a decided creepiness to those scenes where it appears to lead their daughter into precarious situations. From drawing her away to the temple, causing the daughter to go play on a swing-set unsupervised or getting her to play on the edge of a stairway in the apartment, there are some rather creepy scenes in the film. Other creepy scenes feature more traditional scare attempts. Dream sequences featuring bodies dripping blood from birthing locations, characters claiming to see spirits standing behind others in pictures or video or even catching ghostly figures lurking around offer up some rather chilling moments. As well, the scenes at the temple showing the disposal of the corpses set the stage for a truly enjoyable final act that generates several impressive supernatural attacks. The various encounters within the apartment building or the other girl which are quite terrifying and set the stage for the revelation at the end which is far more haunting and devastating than anything else in the film. These manage to hold this one up overall as there are a few issues. The biggest problem is the fact that there's just way too much going on in the plot to keep anything straight as for what's happening. It takes way too long before we're aware that everything happening is occurring within the same universe as it randomly hops around between these stories all of which means it takes way too long before it really gets going. The other issue is some rather wonky CGI present in the attacks that don't need to be there as this had worked far better without much of that involvement and the scenes stand out in contrast because of that. These here are the film's few problems.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and continuous children-in-jeopardy.

Oh my goodness
euroasiangenetic26 September 2019
This is the first horror that actually made me cry.

The story is told by three different couples, Trai and Pim lives happy together with their little daughter Yamai. Until one day Yamai starting to tell them she is with her little brother, but she doesn't have a brother. A young woman is pregnant but she is haunted by a baby ghost, a teenage couple is also haunted by a baby ghost. The couples have one thing in common, they made abortion before and their baby souls has come to haunt them in revenge.

This horror movie is scary yes indeed but it also touch a sensitive subject, that's why I love Thai horror movies because in their films there is a plot message. Most horror are just ghost or monster stuff to scare teenagers. But Thai movies has reasons why things are happening. I give this movie 10/10.
