For every horror movie that turns into a massively profitable hit, there are plenty more that didn't light up the box office. In fact, they continue to be made with such frequency in part because their budgets are usually low enough that it's pretty easy to recoup expenses with anything other than a total disaster. Still, there are plenty of times when horror films don't perform as well as expected. Sometimes they are reassessed years after release with much more favorable results, and the horror genre is rife with box office flops that became cult classics and underrated "masterpieces."
But then you've got the true, out and out stinkers. The films that couldn't even keep up the pretense of being merely a disappointment, and led their studios to pull them from theaters prematurely in an effort not to send good money after bad. Their downfall could have been a result of controversy,...

Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. Van Helsing (watch it Here) was the culmination of what Stephen Sommers had been working towards with tales of fantasy like The Adventures of Huck Finn...

Marcia DeRousse, who came to the aid of the supernatural as Dr. Patricia Ludwig on the HBO drama True Blood, died Saturday in Altadena after a long illness, a publicist announced. She was 70.
She wrote on Facebook in April that a fall in her doctor’s office was going to “lead to my death,” adding that the spill “caused my hiatal hernia to move to an area where it is now dangerous.”
The 4-foot-4 DeRousse made her big-screen debut alongside fellow little person Billy Barty in the Warner Bros. film Under the Rainbow (1981), also starring Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher. She also was in the movies Tiptoes (2002) and D.J. Caruso’s The Disappointments Room (2016).

Marcia de Rousse, who recurred as Dr. Ludwig on HBO’s True Blood and appeared with Kate Beckinsale in The Disappointments Room, has died. She was 70. Her reps at Beverly Hecht Agency said she died September 2 after a long illness.
The diminutive De Rousse got her start in the 1981 Chevy Chase-Carrie Fisher comedy Under the Rainbow and went on to appear in episodes of The Fall Guy and St. Elsewhere during that decade. She had a few roles in the 2000s before being cast in True Blood as Dr. Patricia Ludwig, who treated illnesses acquired by supernatural beings. She appeared in three episodes from the second, fourth and seventh season, last seen fleeing at the mention of Niall Brigant’s name.

The actress had been vocal with fans on Facebook about her health issues, revealing in April that she'd suffered a fall at her doctor's office.
"Who knew a fall in my doctor's office would lead to my death? It caused my hiatal hernia to move to an area where it is now dangerous," she wrote.
"Can't eat, can't breathe, just general misery," de Rousse added.
"Palliative care comes soon, and we wait to turn into hospice and then to die."

Matthew Modine is running for president of SAG-AFTRA again as the leader of Membership First, the union’s opposition party. Joely Fisher, a former national board member, is running for secretary treasurer as his running mate.
Modine was defeated for the presidency by Gabrielle Carteris in a highly contentious election in 2019. In that race, Carteris received 13,537 votes to Modine’s 10,683, with a third candidate, former SAG-AFTRA secretary-treasurer Jane Austin, receiving 5,048 votes. Only 21.2% of the union’s eligible members cast ballots last time.
“The union spends exorbitant amounts of our own members’ money attempting to convince us that our contracts have been successfully negotiated,” Modine said. “The truth is they fall far short of the economic conditions facing performers today. I’m running to ensure that each of the locals across the United States are truthfully and transparently represented.

For All Mankind explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended. Make sure you have a bucket of water nearby and a scary story in mind, because the Midnight Society will be gathering under the stars once again in Paramount's Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie, which now has a slightly earlier release date than initially planned.
Originally slated for an October 11th, 2019 theatrical release, the Are You Afraid of the Dark? film is now scheduled to haunt cinemas one week earlier on October 4th, according to Exhibitor Relations. The prime Halloween season placement could make this the big horror movie of the fall in 2019, especially for those of us ’90s kids who have been craving the Nickelodeon nightmare fuel we grew up on.
Bloody Disgusting previously reported that D.J. Caruso is "in talks" to helm the Are You Afraid of the Dark? film—an adaptation of the popular horror anthology series that aired on Nickelodeon from 1992–1996 (after premiering...

Let me kick this off by saying that I'm a massive fan of Nickelodeon's 90's kid-horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. I own every episode on DVD (come on Blu-ray collection!) and, yes, I can hand over some choice episode recommends (see below). And it's armed with this love of all things The Midnight Society, that one of the upcoming horror movies that I'm looking forward to the most is Paramount's big-budget feature film adaptation.
And today we have word that the upcoming film has snagged its director in the form of D.J. Caruso. Caruso is best known for helming such films as xXx: Return of Xander Cage, I Am Number Four, Eagle Eye, and The Salton Sea. But don't let that deter you from being excited about the man's possible involvement with this upcoming kid-horror movie. Caruso also has films like Disturbia and Taking Lives under his belt.

Paramount Pictures is looking to finally move forward with their feature film adaptation of Nickelodeon’s popular ’90s television series Are You Afraid of the Dark?
According to Bloody-Disgusting, Disturbia and Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso is in talks to helm the film from a script written by Gary Dauberman, who recently wrote the adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
When previously talking about the film project, Dauberman said it will “honor the darker, scarier tone of the show.” The show itself revolved around a group of teenagers who referred to themselves as The Midnight Society. Every week, at a secret location in the woods, one member would tell a scary story to the rest of the group, some of which were based on public domain fairy tales, short stories, or urban legends.
Caruso seems like a decent choice to take on the project, especially with a film like Disturbia under his belt.

Netflix sued Relativity Media on Friday, accusing the bankrupt mini-studio of violating an exclusivity agreement by providing five films to Amazon and Starz.
The streaming service also accuses Relativity of failing to provide the required number of releases for 2017. Netflix is seeking $12.6 million in damages for the exclusivity violations, plus $5 million for each film Relativity failed to deliver.
Relativity declared bankruptcy last month for the second time in three years, as it seeks a court-approved sale to UltraV Holdings. Since emerging from the first bankruptcy in 2016, Relativity founder Ryan Kavanaugh has been unable to raise fresh capital to produce new films.
Relativity continues to have an output agreement with Netflix, first signed in 2010, which Relativity considers to be “one of the crown jewel assets of the estate,” according to the filing. Under the deal, Relativity was originally supposed to provide 15 titles to Netflix in 2017. Following its first bankruptcy, the company revised that total,...

Relativity Media, the beleaguered movie and television studio that’s been running on fumes, has entered into an agreement to sell the bulk of its remaining assets to UltraV Holdings LLC. The studio’s new owner is described in a release as a joint venture among funds managed by Sound Point Capital Management and Rmrm Holdings.
UltraV says it will inject capital into the company so it can begin producing and developing content. It also made a point of stressing that it believes Relativity’s distribution agreement with Netflix is still in effect. Netflix has previously tried to get out of that pact as Relativity’s financial woes have exacerbated.
Weighed down by film flops such as “Out of the Furnace” and “Earth to Echo,” Relativity filed for bankruptcy protection in 2015. At the time it had a book value of $560 million, and liabilities of nearly $1.2 billion. After exiting Chapter 11 in...

An adaptation of an action-thriller book that has been in development for over 20 years may now finally see the light of day, thanks to star Jason Statham and director D.J. Caruso. Statham is in talks to star in Killer's Game, with Stx Films in talks to finance and distribute the film, with D.J. Caruso set to take the helm. Steve Richards of Endurance Media and Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance will produce, although there is no word on who will write the screenplay adaptation just yet. Over the past 20 years, there have been more than a few well-known writers, directors, and stars who have tried to bring this project to the big screen.
Killer's Game is based on the novel of the same by Jay Bonansinga, which was published in 1997, and Hollywood was seeking this project even before it was published. The story centers on an assassin, who, after learning he is dying,...

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.
The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated.

Saturday Am Update: The Fate of the Furious is right on pace with expectations, bringing in an estimated $11.2 million on Friday, en route to a $35-38 million second weekend. Meanwhile, the film will remain the #1 film in the world this weekend as its international total as of last night is $636.3 million and the international weekend estimate is currently $171 million from 65 territories as it looks to top $910 million by Sunday and will cross $1 billion worldwide next week. Of the new releases, it looks like Disneynature's Born in China will lead the way after it brought in $1.59 million on Friday, on its way to an opening weekend three-day around $4.6 million or so. Opening day audiences gave the film an "A-" CinemaScore, which is pretty much typical for these features. Warner's Unforgettable is proving to be anything but as it brought in a meager $1.67 million on Friday and is looking at a $4.4 million opening weekend.

2017-04-19T11:52:55-07:00Kate Beckinsale Proposed to Rob Lowe (A Long Time Ago)
As a teen, Kate Beckinsale accepted a marriage proposal from heartthrob Robe Lowe — sort of.
The now 43-year-old British actress told fans on Wednesday via Instagram that she found a postcard at her mother’s house where her childhood crush, actor Rob Lowe, accepted a marriage proposal from the then-13-year-old.
However, the “Underworld” star admitted that while the card could be authentic, it was probably her “tragic” teen self behind the note.
Either I was a really tragic 13 year old with time on my hands Or Rob Lowe was all kinds of casual proposing marriage via a postcard of himself ,signing his last name And drawing a dick instead of using a stamp .(found at my mum's house)

Wentworth Miller is best known for his ridiculously good looks and his role as Michael Scofield in Fox's Prison Break, but there's so much more to him than that. Like, did you know that he has a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, or that he's starred in not one, but two Mariah Carey music videos? Read on to get to know more about the star in six quick facts. Wentworth is a dual citizen. He was born in England to American parents and moved to Brooklyn when he was just a year old. Each of his parents have at least three different ethnic backgrounds. "My father is black and my mother is white. Therefore, I could answer to either, which kind of makes me a racial Lone Ranger, at times, caught between two communities," he previously told GQ Germany. His dad has Jamaican, African-American, Jewish, and English ancestry, while his mom is Russian,...

A bankruptcy judge ordered Netflix to pay more than $800,000 in attorney’s fees to Ryan Kavanaugh’s embattled studio Relativity Media after a legal battle the studio fought with the streaming giant over much of the past year relating to the latter’s plan to stream Relativity films “Masterminds” and “The Disappointments Room” without waiting for their theatrical release. U.S. bankruptcy judge Michael Wiles ruled that Netflix was obligated to pay Relativity a total of $818,547.48, consisting of $795,732.50 in reasonable attorneys’ fees and $22,814.98 in litigation expenses. However, the judge did not order the streaming giant to pay for fees and.

Steven Mnuchin, selected by Donald Trump to be the head of the Treasury Department, has made it past the Senate Finance Committee and barring something unforeseen, appears primed to be confirmed by a Republican-led Congress. But before that happens, Mnuchin is once again facing fraud claims for his time at Relativity Media, the much-hyped film studio that emerged from bankruptcy last year only to hit more trouble after the flops of Masterminds and The Disappointments Room.

"There's a ghost in the greenhouse that four or five different crew members claim to have seen." Kate Beckinsale's character Dana encounters a supernatural presence within an old home in The Disappointments Room, but the movie's real-life filming location was potentially haunted, too, as director D.J. Even though the holidays are upon us, that doesn’t mean the horror and sci-fi genres are slowing down, especially on the VOD side of things. For December, we have 21 different titles arriving on digital platforms, including two films I absolutely adored this year: The Eyes of My Mother (hits VOD on December 2nd) and Beyond the Gates (arrives on December 9th). Several other indie films will be coming home to VOD over the next few weeks, too, including Pet, Abattoir, The Possession Experiment, and Blood Brothers, and for those of you who may have missed it in theaters, Train to Busan hits VOD on December 13th, and it is not to be missed.
Other VOD releases for December include Solace, Morgan, Good Tidings, It Watches, The Disappointments Room, and the V/H/S-based SiREN.

Following the hustle and bustle of the extended, Thanksgiving weekend it makes sense this weekend would be a bit quieter. Set to repeat atop the weekend box office is Disney's Moana followed once again by WB's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as the rest of the field settles in below. The weekend features one new wide release in Bh Tilt's Incarnate, offering horror fans a little something as the lone horror film currently in wide release, while Freestyle issues the moderate release of the faith-based feature Believe. At the top, Moana should drop somewhere around 54% from its $56.6 million three-day weekend for a second weekend around $26 million pushing its domestic cume a couple million shy of $120 million by the end of the weekend. For comparison, Frozen dipped 53% following its record-breaking three-day wide release and Tangled dipped 55.7% after its $48.7 million Thanksgiving weekend three-day debut. In the runner-up position, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them...

Last weekend saw the top twelve outperform the previous year by a whopping +134.6%, a dramatic improvement after a sluggish October and Fall movie season. Fortunately, this weekend is looking like it too will show an improvement over the same weekend last year with a pair of holdovers leading the charge as Doctor Strange and Fox's Trolls are looking at another one-two finish. Among the week's new releases, Paramount's Arrival is looking at an opening that could even surpass the most optimistic predictions followed by Universal's holiday comedy Almost Christmas and EuropaCorp's thriller Shut In. Meanwhile, Sony will debut Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in just two theaters before going nationwide this weekend and A24 is expanding Moonlight into 176 theaters (+93) as it continues its impressive run in limited release. After an $85 million opening last weekend, Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange should be looking at a second weekend drop right around 53% or so.

A lackluster October 2016 at the box office saw calendar grosses down ~8% compared to last year, contributing to a disappointing Fall movie season that finished down 9.3% compared to 2015. As a result, only one new release in the Fall 2016 timeframe (Sully) has managed to gross over $100 million domestically so far and it would appear it's going to remain that way. Overall, October saw a record 293 films (+32 compared to 2015) generate $657.4 million compared to the $715.3 million from 261 films last year, resulting in the second worst per film average over the last 35 years. For both, 2016's October timeframe and the Fall movie season, this was the second year in a row that saw a decline in grosses, which could be chalked up to the fact 2014 delivered a record Fall movie season, driven by a record October. That said, while October 2015 was down just 5.6% compared to 2014, October 2016 is down 13.27% compared to 2014.October 2016's largest grossing calendar...

Netflix is moving rather quickly to put an end to the $1.5 billion lawsuit filed three weeks ago by Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media. On Monday, the streaming giant filed a motion to strike Relativity's complaint and took some vindication in the film studio's troubles since emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The two sides have been engaged in a legal war since the beginning of the year. Netflix initially opposed Relativity's restructuring and later insisted it had the right to stream Masterminds, a comedy starring Zach Galifianakis, and The Disappointments Room, a horror film that features Kate Beckinsale, ahead of their theatrical release.

With the exception of The Disappointments Room, the least appetizing major movie title of 2016 might be Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant, a crime thriller starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, and J.K. Simmons, due out this Friday. Accountancy is a necessary profession, but it is not necessarily a cinematic one. Still, there is one demographic that might be especially interested in a film called The Accountant: actual, real-life accountants. Uproxx writer Mike Ryan began to wonder if genuine CPAs were particularly pumped about this film, especially after his tweet about the subject garnered some enthusiastic responses from number crunchers. So he embarked upon an entertaining but admittedly not very scientific study. Ryan’s method consisted of cold-calling accounting firms. The results were hit and miss. This is a surprisingly hectic season for accountants, since it’s now crunch time for stragglers who filed for extensions on their returns ...

After May and June of 2016 saw the monthly box office fall short of 2015 by 12.8% and 11.9% respectively, July and August both saw upticks compared to last year. In fact, August delivered near-record grosses and topped $1 billion in domestic earnings for only the second time, thanks in large part to nearly $290 million from WB's Suicide Squad. That said, while September was a down month*the calendar gross was $586 million from 248 total films, down 6.4% compared to last year ($626.4m)*it was the third largest September gross ever, just behind 2015 and 2011, the only years to ever see the September box office top $600 million. Leading the September 2016 charge was Clint Eastwood's Sully, which nearly doubled its closest competitor with $99.4 million by the end of the month after releasing on September 9. In second was Sony's The Magnificent Seven remake, which grossed $50.5 million in just eight days after releasing on September 23. That same weekend also saw...

Maybe one of the saddest thing that can befall a filmmaker is when they spend months or longer making a movie and then for whatever reason, it ends up sitting on the shelf for years.
That’s what happened with director Mike Flanagan’s Before I Wake (previously called Somnia), which was made with Relativity before they got sidelined with bankruptcy and their entire release schedule got delayed. In the meantime, Flanagan (who directed 2014’s Oculus) went on to make two other movies: Hush, which has been playing on Netflix for months, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, a prequel to the 2014 Universal and Blumhouse horror hit.
Starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane and Jacob Tremblay, Before I Wake most recently played the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal this past July and was scheduled to be released September 9, when it was delayed in favor of the appropriately titled The Disappointments Room (which...

When compared to last year, September 2016 has been a bit of a rough and tumble month. While there have been a pair of $30+ million openers, there have also been more than a fair share of disappointments. This weekend closes out the month with two new big budget releases in the form of Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Peter Berg's Deepwater Horizon, both hoping to make a case for their price tag while the long-delayed ensemble comedy Masterminds finally hits theaters after enduring six release date changes over the past 18 months. Overall, the weekend is once again looking to underperform compared to the same weekend last year, which saw The Martian top the box office with $54 million. At the top, Tim Burton returns to work at Fox for the first time since 2001's Planet of the Apes remake and he does so with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children,...

This Past Weekend:
While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

So far at the fall domestic box office we’ve seen a slew of misfires out of the gate including Blair Witch, Bridget Jones’s Baby, Snowden, The Light Between Oceans, Morgan, The Disappointments Room and The Wild Life. 2016-09-18T09:43:55-07:00Weekend Box Office: 'Sully' Bests 'Blair Witch' and 'Bridget Jones'
We knew going into this weekend that the week's new movie releases would have a tough time unseating the defending champ at the box office, but the race wasn't anywhere near as close as expected. Sully easily repeated as the week's winner, and the two biggest new wide releases performed significantly below expectations, setting up a box-office rout that took nearly everyone by surprise.
Sully is set to take in $22 million for the weekend, more than doubling the weekend earnings of its next-closest competitor. Sully's weekend take also represents only a 37 percent drop from last week's $35 million. That's a stellar hold that was no doubt helped by strong word of mouth. Sully's total domestic gross is now around $70 million.

Clint Eastwood’s “Sully” and its $35 million opening weekend isn’t as miraculous as the event it portrayed, but it dovetails nicely with the film’s story about the value of professionalism and the experience of long-term veterans in their fields. Sony’s child-surrogate thriller “When the Bough Breaks” came in a distant second, but together the films helped create a strong weekend at a time that’s accustomed to modest grosses.
Two other new openers – the European animated acquisition “The Wild Life” (Lionsgate) and Relativity’s attempted comeback, “The Disappointments Room,” were afterthoughts. The autumn looks to be as brutal as this summer, and timing – an asset to “Sully” — should play a key role in the performance of many upcoming films.
The Fall Season Starts Off On Even Footing
The Top Ten totals this weekend, around $82 million, are a near duplication of 2015. That leaves the year to date totals about 5% ahead.
