What a dud...in the sense of a bomb that doesn't go off.
Field7813 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Among all the good or at least fine Dutch movies that get such a bad vote here on IMDb, there is finally one that seems to deserve it. The Bombardement, or The Bombing, whatever it is called in English, was plugged years back as the major film debut of folk singer Jan Smit. This led to quite some backlash from professional actors and critics, who considered casting a famous face in order to generate publicity and lure his fanbase into the cinemas fans a cheap trick. However, this is a publicity stunt as old as the history of cinema itself, so as long as the result is good, I am not too bothered with it. But when the movie finally came out, it got panned immediately by every serious critic. Whatever aspiration the makers had to sell this movie abroad and attract an international audience, like Paul Verhoeven's acclaimed Zwartboek, were probably stifled very quickly; it is probably no coincidence that I cannot find an international English title here for this movie on the IMDb page, only a German one.

Of course, when a movie is so badly received, I think the audience should not slavishly imitate the bad reviews without having seen the film itself, and decide for themselves if the movie is really that bad. In my case, I often find that most movies that have been burned down to the ground aren't half as bad as everyone claims. Although I don't think that The Bombardement is the complete smoldering ruin it is made out to be, it is not for lack of trying.

It is not hard to see that the producers were aiming to make a Dutch Titanic. A simple everyman, a pretty wealthy girl, an impossible romance, and a sudden disaster to complicate things. There are moments were the imitation becomes quite obvious, like a dancing scene in a club, the rivalry with the girl's fiancé, an awkward moment with nudity, a clandestine sexual encounter, the girl's initial rejection and final acceptance of the everyman, and a tearful departure. The only thing missing was an analogue to the "I'm flying, Jack!" scene on the front bow. However, the closer the makers tried to get to Titanic, the closer they're getting to Pearl Harbor, and far beyond.

Basically most things in the movie are hit-and-miss. The story outline isn't all that bad, the solution to put a road movie element in as a way to ignite the budding romance between the two leads is pretty inventive. But it is the finished screenplay that is one of the major problems. Written by Paul Ruven and Ate de Jong, two experienced Dutch filmmakers, it makes about every mistake a freshman screenwriter would make. Corny situations, unsubtle plot resolutions, endless banalities, improbable coincidences and dialog that wouldn't feel out of place in a bad soap take away about every literary aspiration that this movie could presume. But almost equally bad is the awful direction by de Jong. I felt that a lot of scenes could have worked with better timing or a director who understands the characters or the situation; however, some crucial scenes that needed to play out as dramatic come out as unintentionally funny or even cringe-worthy. Even the majority of the professional actors seem to be unable to get the right tone, and it is almost unimaginable that Jan Smit's performance comes out as moderately okay and natural. Not that he is a great actor yet, but judging by this attempt, I'd give him a second chance.

The spectacle of the bombing itself is pretty unimpressive. They built some sets to destroy, some bombs go off, it looks okay but feels pretty obligatory. Again, these scenes are filled with moments where they try to inject some humanity, but it backfires and only creates uncomfortable giggles. As such, the disaster movie part fails to convey the drama of the whole historic situation. But the final blow comes from the horrible voice- over, which is so over-explanatory and uses such worn-out clichés like "I wouldn't have done it any other way" and "This is the worst that ever happened to me", that it almost becomes a piece of comedy in itself.

What I can say for this movie is that it isn't boring. It's so corny and funny at the wrong moments that it is almost cute in its own silliness and inadequacy. What is unfortunate is that the bombing of Rotterdam is an important historic moment for the Netherlands that would have deserved a better film treatment, but this is really a movie I can't stay mad at.

Failed to make something good

Poor acting and a thin story. Such a shame because the bombing of Rotterdam is a good subject for a great movie. Unbelievable script with situations that will never happen, therefore a bit hard to chew on. Maybe someone else is looking for a story to tell the right way, find your inspiration in Rotterdam!

How to make bad look at its worst
vink028624 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
My girlfriend made me go and watch this because, and I quote, 'Jan Smit is so cute'. Where to begin? Story, total clichés, stolen from Titanic for the most part, bizarre, ridiculous, not making sense. Acting, wooden, without any feelings what so ever. Special effect, mediocre at best. The bombing of Rotterdam had a enormous impact on those who lived through it but in this movie that hardly comes foreward. It really deserved better then this piece of waste of time and effort. I saw this on Friday and until now, Monday, my gf has not mentioned a word about it. Her not talking about this movie is the best part of the movie. Save your money and time.

What was this monstrosity I was looking at?
debruin19755 May 2013
I have seen many dutch movies, really many... but this one... well, it really is the sour berry on top of a smashed pie. Take some good names (Jan Smit for the first time in an acting role) and a horrible historic event (the bombing of Rotterdam) and you have a winner? Hell no! The acting: horrible! The special effects? Even more horrible. OK, there were explosions, but not the size that will make a house tremble, looking at the size of the actual explosions. More like of someone who accidentally drops some cherry bombs...

And why for God's sake did they put the ACTUAL BOMBING at the END of the movie? It's called Het Bombardement (the bombing) for nothing. Look at 2012 for instance, they put the action in the MIDDLE of the movie, and the rest after that.

No, Het Bombardement is a abomination of a movie, and it didn't showed the drama of that horrible event. If you come across this movie in stores, leave it there. It's not worth your money.

The worst
jan-tromp13 July 2013
This is a movie that should not have been made. The story doesn't have anything to do with the Bombardement of Rotterdam. It happens to be that period. One of the first shots in the movie is not Rotterdam but Dordrecht and simple to see.

Jan Smit is a singer. Het can't act. During the movie he stays the singer Jan Smit and never becomes his character. The childish story isn't his fault. I must admit I left before the end of the movie (like: when an egg is bad you don't have the eat it completely)

Gerard Cox is the best actor here and he only has minor part. The bombing is nothing compared to the opening of the German movie 'Der Untergang'; it doesn't scare you a bit.

i like Jan Smit the way he is as a guy and I'm sorry for him that he accepted this part in such a terrible movie.

This might be one of the worst movies ever
jorgenpfhartogs6 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So many plot holes and such boring dialogues it is hard to watch the whole movie. I had to watch as my girlfriend decided she wanted to see a Dutch movie, but it was cringe-worthy at best. Watched it in Dutch with English subtitles, but it would probably have been better to watch it dubbed in a different language. The main character is supposed to come from Utrecht and living in Rotterdam, but doesn't have an Utrecht nor a Rotterdam accent. In fact, most of the actors don't have a Rotterdam accent which would be okay-ish if the supposedly German characters weren't speaking with the worst German accents ever. German grammar is murdered in the worst way and none of the alleged Germans have believable German accents. Eva, his main love interest, is supposed to be a German girl who grew up in Rotterdam, but somehow struggles speaking German and speaks Dutch with an Amsterdam accent. I have to say though that apart from the horrible accents the plot and the acting by the actors would make Dutch people ashamed to be Dutch. Though the story of the German bombardment of Rotterdam could have been a good story, it is being told in such a way that would might develop some sympathy for the Germans. The only good thing about the movie is that it is not very long and in 1,5 hours one can watch something good again.

Horrible
postvoorberti9 May 2015
The bombing of Rotterdam deserves a good movie as it is such a defining happening in Dutch history. This movie isn't it. In fact it is horrible.

Jan Smit, a Dutch singer (who cannot sing) is not an actor (so he cannot act as well) and he is not from Rotterdam. So he does not know Rotterdams sentiment about the bombing. Why does he have the lead role?

...

Rotterdam was bombed by the Germans, early may 1940. Because of this bombing the Dutch army surrendered. Rotterdam was destroyed in under 15 minutes during the bombing and (in 2015) is still recovering).

This movie is a love story during the days before and after the bombing. And it is horrible. Do not watch this movie.

Worthwhile movie!
dirkjanarts9 May 2014
The movie takes us back to the Netherlands during the Second World War, showing different perspectives (rich, poor, etc) and different cities.

I saw a lot of negative reviews here and felt I should put in some positiveness after actually seeing it.

We should not compare it with box office Hollywood productions, in particular when looking at the special effects.

The lead actor Jan Smit is charismatic and there is good chemistry with the lead actress.

In summary I think there is an audience for this movie and some people will indeed appreciate it!

Face the war with a waltz
mysmalllamb7 May 2020
Knowing the bombardment of Rotterdam is a brutal tragedy, in the beginning I was surprised by the light hearted teenage love story as the main part of the film. But as it progresses, so many casual moments and tiny things gradually make sense. The war is there, the huge casualties and lifetime loss is there, how do you deal with it? As the boy tells the girl to laugh instead of fear, and the girl later tells the boy to do boxing with waltz, I think that is the message how people could endure the war and achieve love. Some German characters here may be snobbish, but the war tells them what is truly valuable; Dutch people may be considered victims, but some Dutch characters show their speculative minds in the warfare. After all, love without boundaries, save those you love, live with those survived by your side. I think it's a good movie about love at wars.

Well I liked it!
writeus-131 May 2020
As a Brit, I found this very watchable and don't really identify with the negative comments. I welcomed this insight into the Rotterdammers experience of German invasion, enjoyed the storyline and the writing and thought the acting perfectly fine. It was a gentler take (e.g.12) which suits lockdown viewing fine.

If only all Titanic-clones were as good as this.
martin-kooistra21 December 2012
Jan Smit is miscast as Vincent a poor, semi-orphaned bellboy/baker/boxer who falls in love with German girl Eva (Roos van Erkel), who's about to embark on a marriage of convenience with a powerful businessman to save her mentally handicapped brother Herman (beautifully played by Jelle Pelmaerts) from almost certain death at the hands of the Nazis. Although it is suggested that Vincent is illiterate (he only 'reads' a boxing magazine for its pictures) he somehow speaks fluent German which is pointed out, and then ignored. Moreover, Jan Smit looks far too squeaky clean to convince as a young man struggling to make ends meet in Rotterdam, just days before it is bombed to smithereens by the Germans. Nevertheless, Jan Smit does a very creditable job and handles the lighter scenes quite well, coasting on his seemingly natural charm which has made him the Dutch pop icon he is. There is also palpable chemistry between him and Van Erkel, who is also somewhat miscast as she is too plain-looking. Why would a shrewd, materialistic businessman - who is in a position to pick his women - settle for her? The voice-overs by venerable story-teller Aart Staartjes are disappointingly bland, and repetitive. The love story between the two leads, however, works surprisingly well, and is helped immensely by the stunning cinematography by Gabor Szabo, who creates some unforgettable moments. The bombardment of the title is well-designed and beautifully shot, and underlines the ambition of this film to be the Dutch answer to Titanic, which it has tried to emulate a bit too obviously. Not a great film, but quite entertaining and definitely worth watching.

A movie that may grip you
h-reterink7 January 2013
The movie is well worth seeing. The story itself it quite elaborate, with a love story and action sequences synchronized with the short-lived war in the Netherlands in May 1940. Many facts about the war are well interwoven with the story-line and give some interesting historical background. The back-grounds of the two main characters are defined by their having to do something important in their lives which they do only out of altruism for a brother, and the love they are starting to experience is jeopardizing their former resolve. The main characters are quite believable and show real chemistry, the action stunts grip you, and the photography sublime. Roos van Erkel really shines. Many critics are far too easy and harsh. They try to frame it as a Titanic-me-too, but ever heard of the age-old story of Romeo and Juliett? Because Jan Smit is known for being a singer, that doesn't mean he can't act. I could go on. If you are willing to let the actors and the story move you, this is a moving experience for the whole family.

'Het Bombardement' review
elomholt30 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A very interesting watch as the bombardment of Rotterdam is a key moment in the history of the second world war in the Netherlands. The movie however didn't always hit the spot. Knowing the bombardment of Rotterdam is a brutal tragedy, in the beginning I was surprised by the light hearted teenage love story as the main part of the film.
