More than a quarter century after Congress passed the Telephone Consumer Protection Act with the intention of cracking down on unsolicited telephone solicitations, one movie's promotional campaign has proven quite costly. On Thursday, a Missouri federal judge awarded $32.4 million over calls made for Last Ounce of Courage.
Producers of Last Ounce of Courage, featuring a man's stand for religious freedom in the face of government attack, hired Aic Communications to telemarket the film. In turn, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee became the movie's pitchman in a pre-recorded robocall. Huckabee delivered an anti-Hollywood message to get audiences to see it.

September is typically a slow month at the box office, and this year was no exception: overall business came in at around $571 million, which is easily the lowest-grossing month so far this year. It was off five percent from last September's record-setting $603.5 million, and was the third month in a row and fifth of the last six to wind up lower than its 2011 predecessor. Still, it was an improvement over every other September, and a lot of that can be attributed to the strong final weekend led by Hotel Transylvania. In just three days, Hotel Transylvania became the highest-grossing movie of September 2012 thanks to its record $42.5 million opening weekend. That accounts for just 7.4 percent of overall business for the month, which is the lowest share since John Q. made up 7.2 percent of February 2002's grosses. It's also the lowest-grossing monthly winner since The Others ($34.4 million) in September 2001. This explains all...

Two major new releases had fine openings this weekend, though they weren't strong enough to resurrect a depressed domestic box office. The fifth Resident Evil movie took first place, though it was a bit disappointing by series standards, while Finding Nemo (3D) reinforced the notion that 3D re-releases have limited potential. The main bright spots this weekend came from the specialty market, with Arbitrage and The Master scoring impressive debuts in limited release. Overall, the Top 12 earned $69 million, which is the second-worst weekend of the year and is off 20 percent from the same frame last year.Resident Evil: Retribution opened to $21.05 million from 3,012 locations this weekend. That's noticeably lower than the last Resident Evil movie ($26.7 million), and also off from Extinction ($23.7 million) and Apocalypse ($23 million). It did at least open higher than the 2002 original ($17.7 million), though it sold many fewer tickets. While it's easy to say that Resident Evil's...

It was a great weekend to be a director named Paul Anderson.
Not only did Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Retribution become his fourth straight Resident Evil film to debut atop the chart; Paul Thomas Anderson’s drama The Master had one of the best opening weekends of all time in limited release.
In first place, Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth entry in the stalwart horror/action franchise, earned $21.1 million — 21 percent less than 2010′s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which began with $26.7 million. This is the first time that a Resident Evil movie has earned less than its predecessor. The original...

Screen Gems continues to find success with their Resident Evil franchise with a recipe that seems to require a budget around $60 million, 3D, Paul W.S. Anderson directing, Milla Jovovich starring and big foreign expectations. While they spent a reported $65 million on Resident Evil: Retribution, the $21.1 million it brought in at the box-office this weekend should help it achieve somewhere around $50 million domestically while it tallies north of $200 million internationally. While Retribution opened almost $5 million down from Resident Evil: Afterlife, it was in about 200 fewer theaters so I don't think Screen Gems will be too concerned though the drop in dollars and a drop in CinemaScore (from B- with Afterlife to C+ for Retribution) may show franchise fatigue. Considering this one was bringing back franchise characters I am a bit surprised it wasn't able to land a better result. You know who's not surprised, reader "Rach" who predicted it would come in at $21 million,...

No! Say it ain't so Hammer! Below is the trailer for the film Last Ounce of Courage released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, which opened in 1400 theaters this weekend. It's another one of those independently made Christian conversative films that have been made lately. However, according to a friend of mine who actually saw this film yesterday, it's a particularly vile one. It centers around a guy who's a mayor of a small western town, Mayor Revere (as in Paul Revere - get it?), whose son was killed in action in Iraq. Falling into a despression for years after his son's death, Revere finally awakes into action when he comes to the realization...

The box office rebounded a bit on Friday, though Resident Evil: Retribution and Finding Nemo (3D) both fell short of their predecessors. The Top 10 earned an estimated $21.5 million yesterday, which is up 60 percent from last Friday's dismal showing. Still, it's noticeably off from the same Friday last year ($26.3 million), which suggests it's going to be another down weekend at the box office.Resident Evil: Retribution took first place with an estimated $8.4 million from 3,012 locations. That's the lowest opening day for the franchise since the original movie in 2002, and it also marks the first time that a new installment has earned less than the previous one (Afterlife debuted to $10.7 million in 2010). Sony is currently estimating a three-day weekend of $22 to $23 million, which puts Retribution in line with Apocalypse and Extinction but below Afterlife. Finding Nemo's 3D re-release debuted to an estimated $5.06 million yesterday. Despite having the widest release yet among...

I am back home in Seattle after a lengthy trip to the Toronto Film Festival and I come home to notice Resident Evil: Retribution almost topped last weekend's #1 film on its opening day with $8.4 million and should be able to end the weekend around $22-23 million. The result is looking to be slightly less than 2010's installment and more in line with 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction, but considering the success this franchise has had overseas I'm sure Screen Gems is quite happy and hoping Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich would be down to make another one. In second was Pixar's 3D re-release of Finding Nemo, which Laremy pegged to hit #1 with $29.4 million, but that isn't going to happen. After $5 million on Friday it's likely going to end around $16 million or so, perhaps a little higher. Other new releases includes Last Ounce of Courage, a film I just added to the database.

After a successful opening Friday, horror/action sequel Resident Evil: Retribution is headed for an easy weekend win — the fourth straight number one opening for a Resident Evil film.
Sony’s $65 million Retribution grossed $8.4 million on Friday, 22 percent less than the $10.7 million opening Friday of 2010′s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which ultimately found $26.7 million over its first three days. Retribution’s gross puts it on pace for a $22 million weekend, which would be smaller than both 2006′s Resident Evil: Extinction ($23.7 million) and 2004′s Resident Evil: Apocalypse ($23.0 million), but ahead of franchise launchpad Resident Evil, which started with $17.7 million in 2002.

Another week, another batch of critics who just can't be pleased.
Nearly everyone loved "The Master," but the Scientology-inspired film didn't go over as well at Amny, where a writer found the movie satisfying in some pretty significant ways. That review notwithstanding, anything short of a Best Picture nomination is sure to come as a disappointment to the folks over at The Weinstein Company.
Josh Radnor's new movie, "Liberal Arts," received some favorable reviews, though one critic took some issue with Radnor's own character. But of the other new films at the cineplex, none was more disparaged than "The Last Ounce of Courage," a preachy project from the same folks who brought you "2016: Obama's America." The target this time: godless Americans who gleefully strip the holidays of any references to Christmas. This supposed sanitization of Christ's birthday provides the backdrop for what most critics agree is a pretty pitiful crusade.

After last weekend’s depressing box office frame, things are looking utterly swimming this time around, thanks to the 3-D re-release of Finding Nemo, which will likely top the chart.
Also opening this weekend is the fifth(!) Resident Evil film, which is headed for solid results, and faith-based title Last Ounce of Courage, which is being distributed by the same studio that pushed 2016: Obama’s America to financial success.
Here’s how the weekend box office might shake out:

The fall movie season is getting off to a pretty slow start, but on the bright side, at least some of this year's awards contenders are finally starting to surface. Resident Evil: Retribution is the biggest release of the week and is well-positioned to rake in some serious cash considering the lack of competition. Finding Nemo 3D is the only other major release, and it remains to be seen whether it can be as successful as some of the other Disney 3D re-releases. In select theatres, P.T. Anderson's The Master finally opens today, and although it's playing on just five screens, it will be expanding the following weekend. Other limited releases include the Richard Gere thriller Arbitrage, revenge heist flick Stolen starring Nicolas Cage, and high school reunion dramedy 10 Years starring Channing Tatum and Rosario Dawson. What will you be watching this weekend? Resident Evil: Retribution Finding Nemo 3D...

Midnight Update: Resident Evil: Retribution grossed an estimated $665,000 at midnight last night, which is up a bit from the last Resident Evil's $625,000. That movie went on to set a series record with a $26.7 million debut, and Retribution will likely wind up at about the same level for the three-day weekend. Coming off the lowest-grossing weekend in at least four years, the box office is poised to get some serious help from two trustworthy brands this weekend: the fifth Resident Evil movie reaches 3,012 locations, while Finding Nemo's 3D re-release swims in to 2,904 venues. Also worth keeping an eye on are Last Ounce of Courage, which will try to tap in to the heartland audience at 1,407 theaters, and Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, which should score one of the top per-theater averages ever at five venues in New York and Los Angeles. Compared to most franchises, Resident Evil is...
