For all the…questionable behavior from One Direction that’s come to pass this week, I find myself cheering for Liam Payne, who took to Twitter to slam Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir for bashing the band. Moir survived trashing Stephen Gately after his death with not so much as a slap on the wrist, but while I doubt she faces any professional consequences for going after a boyband, she might want to stay inside with the blinds closed after angering Directioners.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 15 films left in the race for the Documentary Feature Oscar. A record 147 films had originally qualified in the category. Overall there was no major shockers, with the expected likes of "The Act of Killing," "Blackfish," "The Square," "Stories We Tell," "Tim's Vermeer" and "20 Feet From Stardom" all making the cut (and likely battling it out for the final five). There were a few notable exclusions: Martha Shane and Lana Wilson's "After Tiller," Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel's "Leviathan," Penny Lane's "Our Nixon," Linda Bloodworth-Thomason's "Bridegroom," Errol Morris' "The Unknown Known" and Jason Osder's "Let The Fire Burn" all seemed like strong contenders to make the list, but in the end an incredibly competitive year pushed them out of the competition. Lee Daniels, the only ever gay black nominee for the Best Director Oscar, was the honoree at this year’s Outfest Legacy Awards, and because planned presenter Gabourey Sidibe (the Oscar-nominated star of Daniels’ Precious) couldn’t leave the set of American Horror Story: Coven fast enough to get to the awards, she submitted a video tribute. A replacement star ended up singing Daniels’ praises in person: Jane Fonda.
And not just any Jane Fonda: This was Jane Fonda in a zebra-print jumpsuit and boots. The room exploded. Fonda talked about encountering homophobia when living in the American South for 20 years and how it inspired her hopes for Lgbt acceptance. Afterward she discussed the vitality of Daniels’ work as a director.
“I think of him as an actress’ director — now, that’s not politically correct, we say “female actors” now — just ask Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Gabourey Sidibe, Halle Berry,...

"Bridegroom," is a powerful documentary that spawned out of a heartbreaking viral video, and now Indiewire has gotten a hold of an exclusive clip. Virgil Films released it onto DVD and iTunes this past Tuesday. From the synopsis: On May 7, 2011, a young man named Shane Bitney Crone tragically lost the love of his life, Tom Bridegroom, to an accident. Because they were't married (and despite the partners having been together for six years), Shane had no legal claim to Tom after he died. Tom's family banned Shane from the funeral, he was unable to say goodbye to his love, and he received no survivor benefits. On May 7, 2012, the first anniversary of Tom's death, Shane posted a video on YouTube titled "It Could Happen to You." He created it to honor his partner and show the world what can happen when two people committed to each other are legally barred from...

Linda Bloodworth Thomason, the creator of Designing Women, Evening Shade and other television series, has been friends with Bill and Hillary Clinton for more than 30 years. The Hollywood Reporter asked the director of Bridegroom, a documentary portraying the tragedy that befell a young gay couple when one of the men died before same-sex marriage was permanently legal in California, to write about her relationship with the Clintons. Bloodworth Thomason, who grants few interviews, reveals how her role as the producer of Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign film, The Man From Hope, now considered a seminal piece of political filmmaking,

The sudden death of Shane Bitney Crone‘s life partner Tom Bridegroom was the catalyst for the Youtube video “It Could Happen to You“. Crone created it to honor his partner and show the world what can happen when two people committed to each other are legally barred from the rights and protections afforded by marriage. Since its posting, that video has racked up more than four million views, and it has now been developed into a feature length documentary called Bridegroom. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (Designing Women) produced and directed the feature which previously aired on Own and is available for purchase and download just today.

It was only May of last year when Shane Bitney Crone posted a YouTube video called “It Could Happen To You,” a very sad and moving 10-minute clip about his love Tom Bridegroom, who died after falling from a roof while taking pictures with friends. Bridegroom’s family never accepted their son’s gayness and they forbade Crone from attending his funeral, threatening him with violence if he tried.
Now Crone’s harrowing story has moved off of YouTube and into the documentary circuit. Bridegroom (which is out on DVD Nov. 19 and available on Netflix Instant now) aired on Own in early November and inspired rave reviews from Own heroine Oprah Winfrey and scores of celebrity admirers, including President Bill Clinton.
Perhaps that’s not terribly surprising considering Bridegroom‘s director Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, who created Designing Women and Evening Shade as well as several episodes of M*A*S...

Pixar goes back to college, and Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn try out at Google, but neither campus scores very highly in the comedy stakes
The start of November may seem early to be talking about Christmas shopping – or three months late, according to some tinsel-happy supermarket managers – but it's evidently when DVD distributors start. So numerous are the blockbusters returning for your seasonal delectation in the next few weeks that we're jumping the gun a bit on Monsters University (Disney, U), which roars – well, grunts non-threateningly – on to shelves on 11 November.
The once indomitable animation studio Pixar is currently a victim of its own high standards: Cars 2 and Brave were technically immaculate but narratively wan, a trend that continues with this belated prequel to 2001's superior Monsters, Inc. Looking back on the college days of one-eyed pea Mike (Billy Crystal) and hulking bully-turned-pal Sully (John Goodman) as they...

Premiering on the Oprah Winfrey Network (Own) on October 27th, Bridegroom is a simply told but intensely moving documentary directed by Linda Bloodworth Thomason that reveals the emotional journey of Shane Bitney Crone and Tom Bridegroom, two young men in a loving and committed relationship that was cut tragically short. The story of what happened – of how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out and ostracized – is poignant, enraging and examines important issues of marriage equality and human rights. In our exclusive interview, Shane talked about growing up in a small conservative town and moving to L.A., his six-year relationship with Tom, what transpired in the aftermath of Tom’s death, how his video tribute to his partner went viral and attracted the attention of George Takei, Neil Patrick Harris, and others including Thomason who convinced him to share his story in a larger way,...

Bridegroom is a moving and disarmingly straightforward documentary about a gay couple’s relationship that was cut short by a tragic accident. The surviving partner later posted a tribute on YouTube that garnered millions of views and inspired this film. Writer-producer-director Linda Bloodworth Thomason, best known as the creator of television’s Designing Women, wisely decided not to preach or take to a soapbox. Her film is effective because it tells one couple’s story and allows it to implicitly represent thousands of others. Shane Bitney Crone came from a conservative family in a small town in Montana. Tom Bridegroom was the pride of his family in Indiana, an honors student who...

Bridegroom, a gripping documentary that pivots on brutal familial homophobia, opens with a voiceover that marks the very moment a young gay couple's shared life comes to its end. A tearjerker that charms, infuriates, and devastates, director Linda Bloodworth-Thomason's film uses home movie clips, interviews with family and friends, re-created text messages, and a chilling 911 call to detail the stories—and then, tragically, the story—of Tom Bridegroom and Shane Bitney Crone. You may recall a heartbreaking viral video (posted below) from early last year, in which Shane Bitney Crone detailed the beautiful relationship he had with longterm partner Tom Bridegroom before his tragic death the year prior. Bridegroom's family -- who had never accepted his sexuality or his relationship -- shut him out of the funeral. Crone decided to make the video, which got over 4 million hits and and attracted the attention of Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (who notably created "Designing Women" in addition to creating several promotional films for the Clinton family). She assembled the massive amount of footage Crone and Bridegroom had filmed together into "Bridegroom," an endlessly affecting documentary (which raised $384,375 on Kickstarter, becoming the most-funded documentary film project in the history of crowd-funding to date). After being introduced at the Tribeca Film Festival (where it world premiered) by none other than Bill Clinton, it...

The festival concluded on Sunday with a screening of each film. Both received $25,000 prizes. The story of a displaced family in Laos, "The Rocket" won the world narrative prize for best feature last Thursday at Tribeca. Its young star Sitthiphon Disamoe took best actor as a scrappy kid who sets out to find a new home for his family (our Toh! review). "Bridegroom," a documentary chronicling the legal struggles of a gay man after his partner's accidental death, is poised to be a controversial film given its incisive -- and personal -- portrait of marriage inequality (Indiewire's interview with the director). Australian director Kim Mordaunt’s The Rocket (pictured above) won the former – the Laos-set film also won the two awards from the Festival’s jury earlier this week, including Best Narrative Feature, the top prize. Meanwhile, the Documentary Audience Award went to Bridegroom, a documentary by Designing Women creator Linda Bloodworth Thomason that focuses on the timely same-sex marriage debate by exploring the difficulties faced by a gay man after the untimely death of his partner.
