- A security guard named Danny Chidez is found shot dead in the middle of the street. The Major Crimes team is on the scene and find that Chidez was killed with a shotgun by an assailant. Deputy District Attorney Claire Baldwin arrives to take charge of the scene but Provenza orders her to stand back.
The Detectives search an abandoned house across the street where Chidez reported a possible break in a short time before he was killed. They find a sleeping bag, an iPod, a pink bra, and several condoms. Clearly, someone was partying in the empty home.
At the Major Crimes office, DDA Baldwin continues her involvement in the case despite Provenza's frustration. Further investigation reveals that Chidez was an army sergeant who was awarded the Silver Star.
Brenda arrives, which surprises the team because she was not expected back from leave for another week. She thanks everyone for their support following her mother's death. Eager to get on with the case, Brenda dismisses Baldwin and assures Provenza that she wants nothing more than to get back to work.
Chief Pope asks to speak with Brenda in private. He can't force Baldwin to leave because it's a compromise he had to make to keep Major Crimes in operation and to allow Brenda to keep her job. Commander Taylor is going to be taking over Pope's position as Assistant Chief. Pope didn't tell Brenda because he was afraid she would quit her job and he didn't want to stress her out so soon after her mother's death.
The difficult news continues as Pope reveals that Raydor believes she has found the identity of the leak in the department. They had planned to settle the issue before Brenda returned. Pope promises that Brenda will know who the leak is by the end of the afternoon.
The team finds that the iPod left in the home was sold to a woman named Carolyn Lowitz. They question her about the iPod and discover that it was a gift for her grandson Luke. The detectives apprehend Luke at a shoe store.
Brenda and Gabriel question Luke about his history of breaking and entering and the party at the abandoned house. Luke admits he was in the house with his sixteen year-old girlfriend Jenna Bateman. He claims that Jenna had a key to the house and it was her idea to camp out there. Chidez caught them and they left when he threatened to call the cops.
Raydor interrupts the interrogation to ask that Gabriel speak privately with her and Pope. Gabriel's girlfriend Ann is already in the room, visibly upset. Pope reveals that Goldman, the lawyer from the Baylor lawsuit, was paying Ann for information about Major Crimes. Ann admitted to Raydor and Pope that Goldman paid off her 60,000 law school loans in exchange for information. Gabriel shared his doubts about the Baylor case with Ann, which she passed along to Goldman.
Gabriel feels betrayed and disgusted by Ann. Their entire relationship was a lie, even the day they met at his church. Ann pleads that Goldman told her Gabriel was a crooked cop but she wanted to quit helping Goldman after she really did fall in love with Gabriel. Goldman blackmailed her into continuing.
Gabriel shouts down Ann's pleas for forgiveness and furiously demands that she move out of his house. He agrees to give Raydor a statement so that he can explain himself to Brenda.
Fritz drops by and asks Brenda to talk for a minute. She starts to ask him to wait but stops herself. Fritz wants Brenda to stop avoiding the idea of going home. They can't keep running back and forth from their hotel. He promises they can talk about moving after they go back home to make sure it's the right decision.
Flynn and Brenda question Jenna Bateman about her relationship with Luke and her connection to the abandoned house. Jenna's friend's family used to own the house and they gave her a key to the house. She admits that Chidez had the key in his pocket because he caught her and Luke in the house and kicked them out.
Raydor gives Brenda the details about Ann's actions as the leak and Gabriel's unintentional involvement. Left alone, Brenda argues with Gabriel about his misgivings over the Baylor case. Gabriel told her that he was uncomfortable with leaving Baylor in danger and he is still not sure they did the right thing.
Gabriel discloses his accidental involvement in the leak to the entire Major Crimes department. The team handles Gabriel's admission in different ways and everyone accepts Gabriel's apology accept for Sanchez. Flynn asks that Gabriel request a transfer.
Brenda and Sanchez question Jenna's father about Chidez's death. They found a shotgun matching the one that killed Chidez in the Bateman home. Jenna's father admits to killing Chidez because he tried to rape Jenna. She came home without a bra on and told him that the man who raped her would be waiting outside the abandoned house.
Brenda and Flynn question Jenna about the false rape accusation and her father's plan to murder Chidez. Jenna told her dad that she was raped to protect her boyfriend Luke. She saw her dad leave the house with his shotgun. Brenda and Baldwin agree to prosecute both Jenna and her father for Danny Chidez's murder.
Gabriel stops in Brenda's office to give her his badge and gun. He already gave his letter of resignation to Pope. His relationship with Ann destroyed and his career on the line, Gabriel feels like the Baylor case ruined his life. Brenda relates and apologizes for not listening to his complaints about the case. She accepts his apology for giving Ann too much information and pleads with him not to quit. She even takes full responsibility for everything that happened after she gave the order to drive away from Baylor's home.
Gabriel takes back his badge and his gun. He sits down at his desk but no one else in the department will look him in the eye.
Fritz and Brenda finally arrive home. Brenda cries as she sits on the side of the bed where her mother died. Fritz holds Brenda as she wishes she would have taken the time to talk to her mother. "Last time I saw Mama, she asked me if I had a minute. And I didn't have the time just then. And now I'm the one who could really use a minute. And she has no time at all."
